How to protect car from bird poop? DIY?

Posted by nsaccary@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 12 comments

Don't park near trees. Don't park near buildings. Don't park in the open. I'm sorry but birds are assholes and don't care about your car, your paint your your feelings. Save up and get a cheap car cover. Then save up and get a better car cover. Buy some cheap detail spray and a couple of microfiber towels and be vigilant every time you see the impact craters from those denizens of the skies. Seriously... its about staying under cover and keeping the paint up every time you see the results of their natural habits.

I'm voting for something that won't let the vehicle start unless you can provide an active US DL, insurance and registration via some token, etc. Uninsured motorists and fake-license cars are causing our insurance to skyrocket.

Automakers want to control car repairs. A growing movement is asking Congress to fight back.

Posted by thinkB4WeSpeak@reddit | cars | View on Reddit | 37 comments

Protholl@reddit

They don't want to control repairs - they want to own the entire process. John Deere comes to mind. It's already bad enough when you need a $400+ scan tool to replace a 12v battery in a modern BMW.

A fourth-gen Lexus LS460 fits the bill. I've slain my fill of mustangs and camaros much to the chagrin of their GFs in the passenger seat. Mine is bone-stock except it has K&N filters instead of paper. They just don't look that fast stock.

Hundreds of South Korean nationals detained in large immigration raid at Hyundai plant in Georgia

They are in the country illegally that's the current issue. The real problem is the plant they were working at got a sweet tax deal from the state because it would create a lot of jobs for the local citizens and bolster the economy. It seems the locals weren't able to get the promised jobs.

Is buying refurbished SuperMicro servers a good idea for production use?

Posted by bustedchalk@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 78 comments

Protholl@reddit

Agreed. This is especially relevant with the TPM requirements and some hypervisor vendors sunsetting chipsets. The downside I found is if you are in an environment that is audited by the DoD or other agency using their standards you run into a support problem. They won't certify or allow a platform that is no longer supported by the original vendor.

Bought a new car- should oil changes be up to date?

Posted by Candid-Flamingo8930@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 38 comments

Protholl@reddit

Oil is hydroscopic. I do oil changes at 6 months or 3500 miles (whichever comes first) but I do them at home because I'm lucky to have a nice flat driveway. I stock up on OEM filters, oil plug gaskets and motor oil when it goes on sale. It's what I was taught and I've never had a oil related issue in 25 years of driving.

Car sitting with no battery, or get one now?

This is the right answer. You want to make sure it works NOW instead of getting an unexpected surprise later when you give it to your kin.

IT professionals avoiding all AI is just dumb. The genie is out of the bottle, you can either adapt or be left behind.

Block it all and let people survive on their education and experience that they listed on their resume. Nobody wants the world to be cut/paste coding from any web source. If your employees need access to some AI source you need to yell and scream at HR and ask them how they got past any decent filters. I've dealt with some of those google/chatgpt/whatever new hires and they think its OK. There is no substitute for actual intelligence, experience, critical thinking and working with their peers to achieve an optimal solution. Peace out.

Is my battery already dying?

Posted by EmAych87@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 9 comments

Protholl@reddit

You need to think about a plug-in charger. If you run that dashcam and take short trip your battery is being taxed and will die early. I normally get around 4 years per battery in FL myself so you are already there.

As long as you aren't being audited by a government agency overseeing security you should be fine. The issue is if a zero-day or other vulnerability is discovered in your gear Citrix won't patch it and thus fail a compliance scan.
