We have a separate Miele washer and dryer and they are great but very expensive. Never been a fan of combined washer dryers but if I were to get one I’d get a Miele.

Are Shared Ownership housing schemes worth it for a first time buyer?

Posted by CozJeez85@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 29 comments

ProfessionalTree7@reddit

I bought a shared ownership property (it wasn’t a new build) 10 years ago with a 50% share as I wouldn’t have been able to purchase outright. Rent was really cheap and didn’t increase much each year. I recently purchased the remaining 50% and now own the freehold. We got 3 RICS valuations and used the lowest value when staircasing so got the remaining share for pretty cheap. I’d recommend shared ownership but probably only if you’re planning on staircasing to 100% (some don’t allow this) and I wouldn’t buy a new build one but that’s mostly just because I think new builds are poor value which isn’t specific to shared ownership. Lots of my neighbours have sold theirs and had no issue finding a buyer in a short time.

Which country did you find the least welcoming for British tourists?

Posted by Zoomer_Boomer2003@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1447 comments

ProfessionalTree7@reddit

I find Chinese to be very helpful and accommodating but I can speak passable Chinese. Starting is common though for sure. Never had someone try to scam me but I typically don’t go to tourist areas. I think if they don’t speak English they’re a bit unwilling to engage with foreigners. I always have strangers come up and chat with me and found them to be friendly but the conversations are usually always about the same things which gets boring quickly.

They’re legally required to store passport information for non-British citizens. How are they going to ascertain if someone is British without seeing a document that states their citizenship? It’s just an approach that some hotels and AirBnBs take to require passport info from all visitors. If they’re British citizens they probably won’t do anything, otherwise they’ll store the information. Other places just take your word for it and some don’t bother at all.

Why is there a perpetual skills shortage?

Posted by Ok_Computer6012@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 31 comments

Outside of a few industries and roles there’s no skills shortage just a shortage of people willing to work for the pay being offered. Employers want cheap employees.

ProfessionalTree7@reddit

I would define fluency as being able to converse with people without needing to translate or look up anything in a dictionary. That doesn’t mean you understand everything, but being able to ask someone what a word or phrase means and understanding their explanation.
