All for a few K 🤣
imagudspellar@reddit
A quick google suggests the average retail cash machine can hold around 20k, I see 4 people so even if they get lucky and get away with it they’ve only got 5k each on a good night, doesn’t really seem worth the risk.
Top_Progress3306@reddit
The digger they left behind is worth more

I live in the countryside. Farm vehicles are stolen and sold ALL the time. It's a right plague.
uponloss@reddit
allegedly my dad used to know someone at the docks in Southampton, if you stole a digger you could get it loaded on a boat that night, you could have it in Africa within a week and be paid as soon as it lands. allegedly
wosmo@reddit
So you've gotta get a telehandler from milton keynes to southampton, quickly, quietly, unseen, etc.
The nice thing about cash is you don't need to "know a guy", anyone will take it - at full value, in broad daylight.
zwifter11@reddit
Let’s be honest. You could ride the stolen telehandler straight past a police station with your hand and the horn. And UK police wouldn’t do anything.
uponloss@reddit
You put it in the back of a lorry... which you also pinch from a yard elsewhere, change the curtains and the plate and your good to go.
DefconExile@reddit
Absolutely you can if you know the right people , people steal iPhones and send them abroad for parts , people steal cars and send them abroad either whole or for parts and the same for heavy machinery
opinionated7onion@reddit
Pretty much any farm
kiradotee@reddit
Just keep digging until you find a buyer.
MrBlackledge@reddit
You’d be surprised
Objective_Ticket@reddit
Put it in a container and sell it overseas?
apainintheokole@reddit
They go to the docks and end up in a container heading abroad.
Blandy97@reddit
All pinched anyway.
dja1000@reddit
The damage to the stolen pickup will be worth more.
Key-Seaworthiness227@reddit
Hate to break it to you but the pickup will be stolen as well. They won’t care about the damage to it.
CarthageCabbage@reddit
And to make it worse they won’t even care about the damage to the stolen pick up.
Pure-Vast-7858@reddit
Why would they care about the damage though, the pickup was stolen.
No_Dot_7136@reddit
If the cops ask they could just say it was damaged before they stole it...
blood__drunk@reddit

BoysenberryGeneral20@reddit
Obviously stolen.
Funny-Carob-4572@reddit
Probably 90k plus the pick up on top of that
EdmundTheInsulter@reddit
Yeah well people do steal that stuff, but it presumably entails being in the know as to who to sell it on to. Whereas a plant to nick a safe isn't so tricky
Busy_Mortgage4556@reddit
All hired for the day on fake ID's, or possibly just stolen from nearby building site.
EdmundTheInsulter@reddit
Where they work maybe? They'll be going to collect it back next day.
iambeherit@reddit
That ain't their equipment.
Death_God_Ryuk@reddit
You'd expect the cash machine to have dye packs designed to be triggered by shock movements associated with violent removals. They could well gain nothing from this.
pabloq@reddit
If the cash is loaded by the store it won't be. Only if it is loaded by the guys in the vans.
There are a lot of cash machines now that are only loaded by store staff.
Pheanturim@reddit
Doesn't matter who it's loaded by it won't have dye packs. Work with these devices everyday
ollybee@reddit
why not?
Pheanturim@reddit
The dye packs are expensive and it's not really financially worth it, the money is insured anyway.
True_liess@reddit
And who pays the rising insurance costs ? Sure you know how insurance works.....
SnooCats903@reddit
I'm not sure you know how business works. Until the additional cost of the insurance for not using dye is more than the cost of the dye there's no point paying for it
kiradotee@reddit
Plus the cash is now plastic. Just wash off the dye. /s
Elmundopalladio@reddit
So the providers trying to save on running expenses have made it easier to steal - that’s likely to change if this happens often enough.
EdmundTheInsulter@reddit
Except someone was going round blowing them up with gas, and he did quite a few.
ScottishRajko@reddit
Nope, if it’s a bank owned machine at a supermarket it can hold up to £200k.
Ill-Reputation7424@reddit
Yeah and thought they're VERY hard to break into... I'm not sure if I'm imagining this, or mixed up with something else, but they can ruin and make the cash unusable if not opened correctly?
callardo@reddit
There isn’t much risk and that’s why they do it
Unknown_author69@reddit
I mean, I'm in my thirties now, but there was points in my 20's that 5K would have changed my life.. looks like the pick up and heavy equipment is likely from the same site.
Perhaps an opportunity thief, rather than organised crime. Times are hard.
imagudspellar@reddit
It’s 12 weeks work on minimum wage with no risk of going to prison
Unknown_author69@reddit
But it's not though is it..
You need sustainability fior those 12 weeks, I had 2 weeks max, on a good day.
You need transport, lunches, sometimes uniform or particular tools.
I grew up with a lad, he lived in stantonbury, he had fuck all. He got first sent to prison at 19, spent 6 years there.. When he came out he told me that he hates it that much outside that he's going to reoffend to go back inside.
The routine, the organisation, the lack of responsibility or consequence of no responsibility. He fucking loved it...
My point being, 12 weeks on minimum wage isn't the same opportunity to everyone.
UpstairsClean8640@reddit
12 weeks on minimum wage is absolutely cancerous in 2025 and a disgusting excuse for a human life.
It's amazing that not everyone knows this, some people must have been spoon fed.
VastMeasurement6278@reddit
Minimum wage is simply too low for most people. Cost of living is a nightmare at the moment. The gap between rich and poor has never been greater. Need some Robin Hood style redistribution.
Odd-Leopard4388@reddit
Or another way to look at it is its 5k cash for 30 minutes work. People who do this don’t care about prison. Especially if it’s there first , official, offence.
jakedaboiii@reddit
So out of touch lol - people on min wage are not saving money, 5k is a huge amount for someone with nothing, and able to save nothing.
imagudspellar@reddit
Emphasis on minimum, You can earn more. I’m not scoffing at 5 grand but there’s a proper way to go about it.
External_Chef_7871@reddit
If you pay average rent in London and earn £45k per annum, you’re entitled to Universal Credit just to get by. My rent is £2100, council tax is £300, utilities mean I’m minus before I’ve eaten or travelled. £45k nets me £2900 before my pension (5%) and student loans (£150) go out, £750 in tax and NI monthly.
Putting a child in a subsidised full time nursery so you can go to work; £1900 a month.
Minimum wage is £25k, so you’re in the food bank, even if you’re a couple in London both earning that.
This is why people are so angry. You couldn’t save £5k in 20 years on minimum wage. No subsidised housing available, OBE’s for the landlords. We need a revolution, good luck to those guys with their cash machine heist.
Lower_Cockroach2432@reddit
Very few people on minimum wage are saving money. They're either scraping by or taking on debt.
If their car broke down, or tooth got infected enough to cause pain but not enough to be dealt with as an emergency NHS treatment, or the landlord withheld the deposit I'm sure 5k (or less) could be the difference between immediate bankruptcy, eviction, homelessness, loss of employment and getting back to scraping by.
Main_Relationship147@reddit

Ok_Machine_5954@reddit
"Perhaps an opportunity thief, rather than organised crime."
yeah because everyone has a telehandler, 5 mates and a pick up truck in their pocket for just this occasion at this time of night. /s
think about it... it takes more than an opportunist to plan, execute and deliver the theft of a pickup, an telehandler and an ATM.
wolftick@reddit
They had a damn pickup truck and telehandler. It was hardly grabbing a Mars Bar of the counter while the cashier was looking the other way. I'd say they were reasonably organised.
Rough_Wear_882@reddit

Ivanlangston@reddit

VerbingNoun413@reddit
Assuming the money is useable. Don't those machines have dye packs in them?
mighty3mperor@reddit
Yeah, but you take that cash, buy a large bag of cocaine, cut it and flog it. That's starting to look like decent money.
forbhip@reddit
This was the first thought in my head. The damage to the store, the stolen vehicles, even just the cost of the cash machine itself… the net cost of this far outweighs whatever peanuts (relatively) they manage to get out of it in the end.
Delicious_Device_87@reddit
Yeah, on average we used to put 10k in one at the start of the week but that was about 20 years ago now, in a busy town when cash was king!
Glittering_Vast938@reddit
I remember my first job in the late 80s loading up the cash points to full brim with brand new tenners and fivers.
Seemed like Monopoly money!
Delicious_Device_87@reddit
I did something similar as a teen, lord knows why they gave me all that cash but the fear levels were real!
Glittering_Vast938@reddit
Ours was off site and we (2 young teens!) had to follow the security van who carried the cash in a locked metal box. Actually quite dangerous thinking about it now! Guess we could easily have been held up!
Delicious_Device_87@reddit
Love it. Sometimes things just happened and weren't overthought, and yet everything was fine. Hilarious really!
theoriginalross@reddit
I used to live near Newark around a time when nearly every local cash point was done over in a similar manner.
Average includes all the tiny ones. Some at bigger locations like supermarkets or one that serves a large rural population can have substantially more. Particularly if they have been refilled recently.
Method used around Newark was the same- stolen tele handler/ tractor, stolen pickup/ car and trailer. Usually the machine was found burnt out with the vehicles a couple of days later and they would catch them a month later but would never find the cash.
Safe-Midnight-3960@reddit
Is that really true? Can’t imagine a cash machine in a shop needing that much money. The one in our store had around 3k and it wasn’t emptied every night.
Gingerishidiot@reddit
To make it worth it, they should've nicked a pocket full of Fredos from the store at the same

Several weeks someone tried to do the same to the Sainsbury in Willen. Not sure if they took the cash machine or if they caused damage. It's only a small machine anyway that never has that much money in it. I believe someone also ramraided the Co-Op in Great Linford for the cigarettes. Didn't even bother with a free KitKat. Morons everywhere.
Tiny-Today7768@reddit
Do they do the limited edition Kit Kats there? If not I'm not going to bother ram raiding it.
darybrain@reddit (OP)
They absolutely do. Bellends just took the fags and didn't bother looking at anything else. At least get your weekly shop in for free.
This store also used to have a shoplifter who would come in a number of times and nick a cheap shit bottle of sparkling wine to share with his girl who was usually waiting outside. Always took the same brand. Never bothered to take any of the fancy stuff or anything else that would go with the drink. No class.
ttssrr88@reddit
Willen Sainsbury’s was an old boy who couldn’t find the brake pedal and mashed the accelerator. I thought it was a ram raid so I asked the manager but he said otherwise. Thankfully no one stood at the cash machine or kids walking past
National-Owl8134@reddit
Never has much money in it ? Lol how do u know , do u open it often ? It’ll have at least 20 grand
darybrain@reddit (OP)
Almost every time I've used it can't give me all of the money I ask for which in itself isn't a huge amount. The shop and other surrounding places can get busy but not widely busy hence I suspect it never has a full stash in it. Maybe it is just on the days I'm around.
Mysterious_Ball_8212@reddit
I have the same issue with that machine never any money in it,try get it out and it just says insufficient funds everytime.
Temporary_Object1866@reddit
:)))))
Inner-Copy9764@reddit
Mine says insufficient funds all the time too
ExposingYouLot@reddit
How do you know it doesnt have that much money in it? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 each cassette can hold about 25k
zeedrunkmonkey@reddit
The sainsburys I used to work in left £2000 in the ATM over night and the rest was locked in the cash office vault, just incase people try to break into or just straight up steal the atm
ExposingYouLot@reddit
If a cash machine isn't mashing over 2k a night, it has no business even being there.
My experience is woth banks, not supermarket ATM's, but that is absolutely ridiculously low amounts!
zeedrunkmonkey@reddit
That's how it was in the store I worked in, but it was a fairly high crime rate part of North London so could be beacuse of that maybe 🤷♂️
darybrain@reddit (OP)
Almost every time I've used it can't give me all of the money I ask for which in itself isn't a huge amount. The shop can get busy but not widely busy hence I suspect it never has a full stash in it. Maybe it is just on the days I'm around.
StrongDorothy@reddit
It’s usually your bank restricting the amount you can withdraw.
benroon@reddit
Insurance companies restrict it to 80k
twignition@reddit
It wouldn't let you ask for more if it was a bank restriction.
ReputationApart5983@reddit
These idiots have seen the movie Barbershop. In that movie some people steal a cash machine because they believe it has 150k in it. Now while its true cash machines can hold that much money, they will never be loaded up that much. They will usually be topped up regularly and only hold a few grand. Banks are not that stupid to fill it up to the max. Also these now come with dye packs that will ruin the money when the machine has been tampered with.
Rookie_42@reddit
Just curious… what makes you think this machine “never has that much money in it”? How would you know something like that? Is it often empty, or something?
pabloq@reddit
Most ATMs in stores are loaded by the staff in stores. They only put a small amount in them at one time. I'd be surprised if most of those have more than a couple of thousand in them.
Weird1Intrepid@reddit
That's bollocks, store staff are not allowed to touch them
naturepeaked@reddit
Are you sure about that?
AlwaysRedNeverBlue@reddit
Don’t you ever see security guys arrive in the navy blue vans turn up at ATMs, banks, post offices with large carry boxes? Those boxes contain money, that they transfer into the machines.
naturepeaked@reddit
Exactly - they are saying they are loaded up by the store team isn’t he? That’s what im disagreeing with.
Revolutionary-Mode75@reddit
Yes and the guys in those vans are the ones loading it in the machine. The most the store staff do is open a door for them.
Aggravating_Chair780@reddit
That is absolutely not how ATMs work in the uk. I doubt they work like that anywhere. When I worked in a shop with an ATM, we’d have to lock the doors while the folk from the stored van took the old cassettes out and put the new ones in. Do you think there’s just a massive box of money the random supermarket staff are topping it up with in bunches of notes…?
pabloq@reddit
Yes.
Why would I waste my time of here spouting bollocks?
Your experience in one shop isn't the same as my experience servicing 1000s of ATMs across the country.
Illustrious_Pack_954@reddit
Imagine thinking shop staff fill up ATM's 🤣
Wretched_Colin@reddit
It definitely used to be a thing. A selling point to shops was that, instead of storing and transporting cash to the bank, they could put it in the ATM from their cash drawer and the money is then deposited to their accounts.
Nowadays with cash being so uncommon, I’d imagine retailers wouldn’t have the cash on hand to top it up.
ProfessionalBird7847@reddit
I used to fill up the internal cash machine from the shop’s float. It wasn’t owned by the shop. Used to be less than a grand in it. Took it out and audited at close every day. 2000’s.
pabloq@reddit
If security companies were filling up every ATM in the world there wouldn't be enough space on the road for all the cash in transit vans.
I worked as a ATM services technician once upon a time.

Illustrious_Pack_954@reddit
Shops and supermarkets in the UK don't own the ATM's attached to them. Some used to back in the day but not anymore.
pabloq@reddit
Doesn't matter if they owned them or not. They are not getting filled up by security firms all the time.
Fun fact(s). No ATM I ever worked on ever had a operational camera or used dye bombs. That includes ones in banks, supermarkets and post offices.
Illustrious_Pack_954@reddit
They are getting filled by security firms all the time. The same security firms also collect the money from the supermarket tills daily. You probably think a member of staff takes bags full of cash to the bank themselves, because youre very clever like that
Only_Anybody_8410@reddit
Definitely not loaded by staff. I work in the cash office and it’s dealt with a separate company who come in and do the all the maintenance and checks. I do deal with all the money in the store and bag it up to be sent to the banks.
pabloq@reddit
Where did they go? Poor cunt got deleted.
Yeah. I'd waste my time making shit up on here. Fucks sake.
benroon@reddit

Mysticalmaid@reddit
They really aren't loaded by shop staff. They aren't even the store's responsibility. They are just on store walls with permission.
darybrain@reddit (OP)
Almost every time I've used it can't give me all of the money I ask for which in itself isn't a huge amount. The shop can get busy but not widely busy hence I suspect it never has a full stash in it.
RogansUncle@reddit
Do you think they went to that effort to find there’s less than say £500 in it then?
darybrain@reddit (OP)
No idea. Maybe they were somehow aware of when it gets filled or just randomly picked a day and cash machine. I hope that having some knowledge of delivery schedules or cash quantities would make it easier to find them.
Rookie_42@reddit
Fair enough. As I say, I was just curious. I just couldn’t think how anyone would know how much was in it, that’s all.
Vast_Television_337@reddit
My brother works at the Willen one, if I remember right I think he said they're not planning on replacing it, which sucks convenience wisw
darybrain@reddit (OP)
They'll probably put one of those small kiosk ones inside the shop like some smaller shops have although they charge you for taking any cash out. Just about enough people use it to justify it being there, however, it does cost the individual store a fair amount.
eltictac@reddit
Some guys did the sainsburys near me a couple or three months ago. They got about £10,000 apparently. Not been caught. Not bad for 5 minutes work 😅

Reasonable-Horse1552@reddit

Primary_Wear7434@reddit
It's such a common occurrence if you dial 911 it will automatically redirect to 999.
Reasonable-Horse1552@reddit
That's so sad
dejavu2064@reddit
Come on that's a little bit extreme. This happens everywhere. If you call 999 in Europe you'll get through to 112. It isn't some sad commentary on the British influence of Europe.
If the number isn't in use redirecting it to what was clearly intended makes total sense considering it could be a panicked tourist or visitor dealing with an emergancy.
Yoshi9105@reddit
I'm pretty sure that's an international thing for safety reasons, if I remember correctly. in a lot of countries dialling any popular emergency number will usually redirect you to the local emergency service.

Not much finesse. I suppose they’ll be easy enough to trace especially with ANPR
tutike2000@reddit
Every vehicle involved would have been stolen

I mean to literally trace on the road. Not the ownership.
Someone calls and reports a crime. Get the police on the phone. ANPR tracks where they’re going. Yada yada.

I don’t think there’s a high enough volume of Police ANPR cameras to actually track a stolen vehicle with any effectiveness

ATM engineer here and used to work on the contract to fix Sainsburys ATMs. Model of the ATM will be an NCR 6625. The hilarious thing is they clearly didn't do their research into what they were stealing. It looks like they only managed to take the ATM top box which has nothing of any value in. The safe is still on the floor in the store 🙄

Every ATM ive ever worked on: cassettes have trackers not dye packs. Although the lifting of ATM's has died down loads so they might not even have trackers in them. Bank tills have dye packs- never known an atm to have them- and even if they did- they activate when taken outside of the perimeter of the site rather than on opening of the cassettes

Why not just steal the pickup truck. Worth far more than whatever is in the cash machine.
ExposingYouLot@reddit
Pretty sure they did....
BigFluff_LittleFluff@reddit
I meant as in just steal the pickup and make a tidy profit, instead of messing about with the cash machine.
ExposingYouLot@reddit
Depends if they had inside knowledge on filling routines etc.
An ATM single cassette can easily hold 25k, 3 /4 cassettes full is a tidy profit- all cash, relatively easy to hide if you're not completely thick!
kiradotee@reddit
Divide that by everyone that's maybe 5k per person. It's good cash. But for such a risk and the amount of work required is it actually worth it.
ExposingYouLot@reddit
I think you are massively underestimating how much cash 5k would be to people like this, a couple of months before Christmas.
Plus- you say such a risk... which to me and you seems high risk... but that sort of stuff is pretty standard to people like this- the chances of getting caught and going to prison are extremely slim of they all keep their mouths shut
Main_Relationship147@reddit

Simdel96@reddit
It's only a VIN swap away from being sold to an unsuspecting customer. Or it gets exported.

Simdel96@reddit
I think pick-up trucks are just as likely to be VIN swapped.
Main_Relationship147@reddit
Bro this ain’t w a pick-up truck 😂
Simdel96@reddit
The white thing the cash machine is loaded into is most definitely a pick-up truck.
Main_Relationship147@reddit
That’s the one they took with them..
Simdel96@reddit
Yes. The person you originally, quite rudely, replied to was only talking about the pickup. His comment was suggesting that just stealing (and selling) the pickup would be far less hassle than the cash machine job.
Main_Relationship147@reddit
It appears he was calling the big boy a pick-up truck, since as evidenced in the video, if they don’t own the pick up they did steal it.
BigFluff_LittleFluff@reddit
Where do you think stolen pickups, land rovers, vans etc go?

BigFluff_LittleFluff@reddit

Illustrious_Pack_954@reddit
The truck IS stolen 🤪
BigFluff_LittleFluff@reddit
meant as in just steal the pickup and make a tidy profit, instead of messing about with the cash machine.
Training-Source9862@reddit
do you really think youd get full market value for a stolen pickup? MAYBE get a couple hundred for it if they got lucky, and its not really like the type of person whod buy it would care much about some damage to the bed, so they could probably still sell it after this job too
InglouriousBrandon@reddit
As the other guy said you just have to get a clean vin which there are tonnes of on the black market and it’s no longer stolen, just second hand.
But these guys are clearly not the sharpest tools around.
SeveralReaction7673@reddit
The bit I never understand about these raids is the stolen telehandler + stolen pickup truck are probably worth more than the cash inside the ATM. Seems like a lot of faff for little gain. But what do I know..
dead_jester@reddit
The telehandler is very hard to shift on the black market in the U.K. and probably has a hidden tracker. The truck won’t be worth much except as spare parts.
A lot of faff for little gain: thieves like these aren’t known for their smarts. That’s why they’re thieves.
Own-Mortgage-8189@reddit
Surely various parts are going to be worth more than a dye-soaked maybe-10k. Must be a pretty hefty engine block in one of those. Wheels, various heavy-duty mechnical components. And they're getting £0 spendable cash out of that cash machine.
dead_jester@reddit
If you’re the one who stole something and want to sell it on, you will go through a fence. The fence will want a decent return on investment, and so will only give you pennies in the £ on anything you want to offload quickly.
These guys won’t have thought about finding somewhere to hide the stolen telehandler or the truck. These guys won’t have that kind of money or planning in place - that’s why I said they are not very bright.
There are professional gangs that steal vehicles and strip them for parts - they don’t steal cash machines, but that’s not these guys.
Own-Mortgage-8189@reddit
Oh I totally agree with you. This crime was not thought out at all.
dead_jester@reddit
Indeed. The guys who stole the French crown jewels from from the Louvre in Paris, showed the way for use of a telehandler/mobile freight elevator

The staff when they open shift in the morning, it's a huge mess, likely cold with the huge gaping hole, and potentially unsafe when they cause structural damage dragging it out.
Acting like "oh the big company can afford to fix it" ignored the reality that the lowest level staff have to deal with the mess.
ukstonerdude@reddit
So when the owners of the pickup, the giant fucking telehandler and the black hatchback make their insurance claims, nobody else’s average premiums are affected? Nobody has to miss out a day of work? Nobody living across the street feels unsafe after witnessing a robbery at midnight?
