What is your favorite IT superstition?

I do the opposite. I tell people openly that if things are quiet, then I'm doing what I'm paid to do. I even said this to me boss and he asked the obvious "why?". As I told him, think of me like a mechanic. If things are running smoothly do you want to see me tinkering with stuff or do you want to set me just making sure the engine is fuelled and the oil is topped up. Or like a foreman running a plant. Do you want to see me running around because stuff is always broken and needs fixing, or do you want me looking for efficiencies, better ways to do things, etc. So in a way as the IT guy, if you see me running around like a mad thing, then I'm not doing my job. If I'm sitting at my desk doing simple stuff or doing planning, then everything is running fine and I'm doing what they pay me to do. After so many decades in IT I have one golden rule, if it works, why fuck around with it? Let the systems do their thing. IT to me is a tool. It's a tool that my colleagues rely on to do their work. I'll spend money and resources so that they can earn the money that allows me to spend that money and expend those resources. It's mutually inclusive. We also often forget that our roles are a cost to the business but a cost that is necessary for the business to function.

It's a stood stupid management concept that gets taught in MBA school. "You can't manage what you can't measure". It's taught to people who should never be given people management roles.

I work for a rugged device manufacturer. Help me understand: why do so many warehouses still deploy consumer iPads with foam cases?

I've had my MD ask me is it was possible to "turn off" the CEOs email for the week he was supposed to be on leave. I said I'd look into it but didn't think it was possible. I then had the CEO ask me to **not** turn off his email. Told them both to sort it our amongst themselves. Never heard the request again.

Support to headcount ratio

Posted by mimimi696969@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 15 comments

Own_Error_007@reddit

Really depends on the industry and the user base. You could lose a headcount but that slack needs to be picked up somehow and overloading those left will just cause turnover. I sole operate for 300 but use outside businesses to pick up that slack and that comes at a cost per month. Less than a body but it adds up quickly. But it suits the business I'm in because of its nature.

The most expensive IT decisions are usually made by people who will never maintain them

I've sat in meetings with vendors who have said "this had turned into a mess" only for me to say "thanks, I designed it all myself so only I suffer the consequences." Joys of solo admin.

Google Workspace, Microsoft365 or something else - For mostly just email

Posted by Zulbo@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 20 comments

Own_Error_007@reddit

365 just because of the fact that you have control over it. I've seen Google just disable entire small business accounts for no reason, with no recourse to recover. One day you can login, the next you can't. That's it, end of story.

Dell to Lenovo?

Own_Error_007@reddit

I've been a Lenovo fan forever. They just work, rarely have issues and the odd times one does, if its out of warranty I can get parts. The last one I had an issue with - a T14 with a dead screen - cost just over a $100 for a new panel and 15min to replace it.

Read.ai is a cancer on society, a privacy and sysadmin's nightmare, and should be banished to the dustbins of history

Posted by Competitive-Trip2926@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 108 comments

Own_Error_007@reddit

I've blocked it (and Otter.ai) everywhere. Even went into my admin consoles and disabled the ability for anyone to install anything. Of people want it they can ask for it. Have also blocked the whole of .ai TLD from our email just to make sure.

As a EU company, how worried should I be using US services like Azure.

Own_Error_007@reddit

As an Australian IT dude whenever we talk to a provider we have it written in contacts that our days is not to be stored on the US. We just migrated away from AWS finally and everything we have now it's local. It's a very real threat as anyone who had had a business Google account suddenly get flagged for no reason will know all to well.
