Is there any reason why UK trains can’t run until at least 1am?

MrKiplingIsMid@reddit

By overnight services, I'm referring to services running regularly throughout the night. Groningen doesn't meet that definition. Others b y that definition, Britain's railways aren't broken beyond repair as there's plenty of trains running beyond midnight too - 0033 from Waterloo to Woking, for example.

MrKiplingIsMid@reddit

True, I should have said Belgium. But those overnight services in Netherlands are concentrated all around the Randstadt, which has a network of lines they can use during works. A better comparison would be Groningen or Arnhem to anywhere else in the country, both of which have zero overnight services

Engineering works. We run a very intensive service on ageing infrastructure. Some lines can run 24/7 because there's alternate routes or parallel slow/fast lines- Milton Keynes to Euston, Bedford to Three Bridges, Manchester Airport to York, to name a few. Most countries finish service at roughly the same time we do, so it's not a case of 'Britain bad'. It's rare many trains run beyond midnight in Japan or the Netherlands either.

You need massive footprints for all the infrastructure - loops, storage tracks, etc - for this to work with multiple vehicles. Closest you’ll get is the Morgantown Personal Rapid Transit system in West Virginia. Additionally, issues with perceptions of personal safety, especially late at night or amongst demographics like women, the disabled, etc. Advantage of a conventional railway is that a two platform station can have an exceptionally small footprint.

England has the[ Pharmacy First](https://www.england.nhs.uk/primary-care/pharmacy/pharmacy-services/pharmacy-first/) scheme that lets pharmacists prescribe for seven conditions, including uncomplicated UTIs and sore throats. There''s also been a big push for pharmacists to take independent/supplementary prescriber qualifications. I think all students from September this year become independent prescribers at graduation, which has apparently been quite controversial in the medical sphere.

Has anyone got rid of their oven completely and got an extra air fryer instead?

My air fryer is invaluable, but it exists along the oven rather than replacing it, since I do a lot of baking and batch cooking. My oven also doesn't have a grill (student accommodation, I understand why), so the air fryer sort of acts as that too.

Honestly, despite the fact they can look and sound a bit intimidating, most roadmen here are big softies here too. I tripped on a paving slab in town the other day and two young men with those tiny slung bags and snoods rushed over to make sure I was alright, and helped me put shopping back in the bags. Lots of "the council should get this sorted" and "you should sue, love". Exactly the same conversations I have with the old fellas on the bus, but a few generations younger. The kids are all right.

What is today’s equivalent of the kind of kids shows that 90’s kids watched on Cartoon Network in the UK?

Posted by Samaretee@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 12 comments

MrKiplingIsMid@reddit

The Amazing World of Gumball was commissioned by Cartoon Network and it's a nice bit of fun. Has a similar anarchic flavour to some of those 90s cartoons with some gross-out humour and cultural reference. They’re both finished now, but there's also more serious cartoons like the Owl House and Hilda. But honestly, most kids forgo TV and watch stuff on video streaming platforms now. The Amazing Digital Circus is the go-to example of an independent cartoons hitting it big, and that 'airs' on YouTube. A teacher friend wore a Pomni pin to school once and half the class went absolutely wild over it.

Do you enjoy sitting on a Ryan air flight?

Posted by swirlyjesse@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 59 comments

MrKiplingIsMid@reddit

Think of Ryanair as a National Express coach in the sky. Their flights are basic with no-frills, but that's a perfectly fine experience for the cheap price you pay and the short hauls they operate. I always bring noise-cancelling headphones to ignore the inevitable stag party three rows behind and the perfume/lottery cart clattering up and down the aisle. Most of their flights are short enough that I don't bother bringing any snacks, but I'll buy something airside if it's more than a couple of hours.

Why is UK rail travel so insanely expensive?

Posted by Desperate-Drawer-572@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 453 comments

MrKiplingIsMid@reddit

I'd argue Princess was a failure because the short and long-term impacts it had on the cross-country network were staggering. Virgin assumed no significant increase in growth despite studies and data showing that increased frequencies stimulate demand, especially with the infrequent nature of the pre-Princess LHCS/HST timetable in some places. The timetable having no resilience either with ten trains an hour pushed through Birmingham (and some very optimistic crew diagrams) was always going to end in tears. Personally, I don't dislike the Voyagers. If they had accounted for growth and ordered a larger number of trains as a mixture of 5-car and 9-car trains as per EMT's Meridians, it'd be a very different story.

MrKiplingIsMid@reddit

The government's refusal to invest in a long-term rolling stock strategy for CrossCountry is just embarrassing. The failure that was Virgin's Operation Princess should never have been approved, but you'd think the government would have devised a solution in the last 23 years. So many people I know want to take the train up to Brum, but it's such an unpleasant experience they don't bother.

People don’t know or underestimate just how many lines were closed before Beeching. There was a massive push in the interwar era and the 1950s which would have seen huge swathes of the rail network closed regardless.
