The comments were fucking sickening. I asked a question last month "People who drive for a living: Do you feel there are worse drivers in the south west than the north?" And it was taken down instantly as it would cause trouble/arguments

That sub is the worst of both worlds because it’s constant moaning about the UK’s issues (fair enough but still miserable) but goes ballistic if you dare suggest that another country does things better, god forbid the US especially. I don’t mind subs like r/goodnewsuk, even though I don’t like this country for a ton of issues (none of them fall into the current political hot topics though, just views I’ve held for years now), because good news is really important to balance out bad news, even in genuine hellhole countries like Afghanistan or something, because trashing your mental health because you live in, what you may consider, a trash country, is just cutting your nose off to spite your face. But if we’re gonna constantly bring up miserable topics instead, I want to see actual, calm, rational conversations about them and respectful exchange of views between users, regardless of how agreeable or disagreeable they are (as long as they are phrased respectfully ofc), but no, we’ll instead complain about, say, salaries 24/7 or something, and if I say “Yeah this is why I’m jealous of middle class Americans because they earn X more than Brits do for Y job”, you’ll get an army of the most braindead moaners who will immediately do a 180 at you for daring to suggest any action be taken (either by you personally, like in this case, or governmental, etc) instead of sulking and crying about it while doing nothing for years like they do over there lol. They clearly just want to complain so badly that they don’t even want any issues to be fixed or to be changed in some way because then they’d have nothing to whine about

Can be an absolute cesspit. Two accounts who are constantly posting baiting/negative articles and constant negative comments and bounce off one another. If frequent the sub you'll know who they are. One only summarises negativity stories/ones pushing a certain agenda. I think people have cottoned on and are pushing back against the wave of certain topics posting and how these artciles trigger the waves of certain accounts, but on other stories very low engagement.

I left one of the bigger audio subs when I corrected someone on a technical bit of hardware info and they argued, so I took apart the piece of hardware that I owned, labelled it and explained in stupid amounts of detail with supporting sources how the claim they made was wrong, and they were still like "No you're wrong".

So over covid, I ran out of shows to watch and tried a few animes out at the suggestion of a work colleague. Being a sci-fi fan I found a lot of good, weird stories I'd never seen before. I'm a big fan of Stranger Things and I was disappointed with the finale. But I got over it in about 5 minutes. I feel sorry for a lot of people on that subreddit, I think they're mentally unwell. To be so invested in a tv show that you post about how you're crying because your 'ship' didn't end up together and all the crazy conspiracy theories to prove that what you wanted to happen did happen even though it literally didn't is just sad. It's one thing to enjoy a tv show but to be so invested to the point you don't seem to realise it's not real life and these aren't actually real people is disturbing.

I dont have any friends or family who are child free so I just wanted a place to discuss my life choices etc in a way that people in my real life wouldn't understand. I used to sub to r/AmITheAngel but I unsubbed last year because it got really boring. when it was full of outlandish stories and people pointing out plot-holes etc it was fun, but some posters just started spamming every single post from some shitty subreddit for posting texts, all of which were obviously fake, so ok that's what the sub is for but they were so lazy and the same thing over and over. I liked it when it was for posting notable fake posts from AITA subs, or for talking about what tropes were being pushed that month, not just any old shit

I know quite a few lawyers IRL and they would piss themselves laughing if I asked has they considered doing this, I get a very slim may do if passing and it’s their area of law. That sub really is a case of 'buyer beware'. I have a few years paralegal work under my belt from many moons ago and had a consumer issue (consumer wasn't my area of law in any case). Naturally, I post it up on there and the response was poor. If it wasn't 'well you should have known your rights at the time' or equally as shit advice, it was just flat out wrong. I've since got the money I was asking for and then some without court; trading standards or any of that shit. Turns out I was right in the end from my research. My advice to anyone in need of legal advice is check everything from your trade union membership to your home insurance to see if there is free legal advice covered as part of that. That sub shouldn't be your starting point.

aye yeah it’s a fine line for sure. i’ve found my ‘happiness’ in an obscene amount of cat subreddits, plus the various franchises of a reality tv show i watch - all of which make me laugh a lot daily. but this site is so incredibly and actively soul-depleting without that kinda personalised and upbeat content. i also struggle with drinking, and r/stopdrinking is i think legitimately the last lovely corner of the internet. whether drinking problems yourself/loved ones or no, it always lightens the soul just to have a look-see. never seen a single instance of judgement, arguments, negativity, toxicity - it’s just pure and unconditional support. brings some faith in humanity back.

For me, it’s most of the historical photo subreddits. Without fail, whenever there’s a picture of two women or two men simply standing together, the comments immediately jump to “and they were roommates,” and insinuating that everyone in the past must have been gay and repressed. It’s this weirdly yassified reading of history that seems unique to Reddit. I ended up getting banned from one sub that prided itself on being “respectful and inclusive.” My crime? Suggesting that while some of these people were undoubtedly gay, we should be careful about retroactively labeling everyone, especially since attitudes toward friendship and physical proximity were completely different back then. These historical figures might actually be quite upset at being mischaracterised. The mod’s response was to call me a bigot, ban me, and make a post about it.

It’s absolutely not unique to Reddit. Obviously gay people have always existed but also obviously they’ve always made up about the same percentage of the population as they do now. Plus until pretty recently it was illegal to be gay/have gay sex in most western countries, so no, it’s unlikely two 19th century men with their arms round each other are probably not being out and proud. You’re quite right attitudes were different in the past, it’s like looking at other cultures. People who assume everyone everywhere for all time were exactly like 21st-century middle class progressive Americans drive me insane. Presentism is not a good thing!

I never joined but I came across a subreddit that referred to Paedophiles as “minor attracted persons” or MAP’s and it appeared to be a subreddit for anime style CSE material. I believe they called it shota if memory serves me well. I commented under a post that was recommended and called them out for being nonces, these sickos started defending drawn CSE material because it “doesn’t actually involve abuse” I contacted the IWF and gave them a link to the sub Reddit. I also reported the sub Reddit using reddits own tools and was shockingly asked to provide links to the individual images rather than the sub Reddit as a whole. I’m sorry but I’m not trawling through CSE material. Sexualising children is absolutely vile.
