I cut it all off and have a short masc cut and dyed my gray streak blue. I also just came out as a lesbian, and I feel way more like myself this way. It’s pretty awesome.

Did you guys really dial in to radio shows to win contests? How did you even become caller 99 (or whatever)?

I’m 46 and she’s 52. I figured out I was a lesbian about few years ago and she’s my first relationship, we’ve been together about a year and a half. It’s pretty great. Life is a dumpster fire, and sometimes that comes home. We’re both disabled, it’s messy. But this is really real, and really good.

Mom ran her own business, and let us answer the phone after practicing with her. That’s where I learned my “professional” voice that I still use. Dad worked sales out of his car, and I got to explore restaurant kitchens and eat tons of awesome food all day long. It was a blast whoever I went with.

How was your 2025?

Mapper9@reddit

I moved in with my girlfriend and her daughter, after coming out as a lesbian not all that long ago. Emotionally, life has been pretty fantastic. I love my family so much. However, I’m still plodding through a divorce with my ex husband, my mom is nutso, and we’re renting but struggling to get financing to get work done on the house I own to make it accessible for our disabilities. So there are some some seriously great things, and some seriously stressful ones.

Worst Christmas Gifts Ever

Posted by Bubbly-Main2016@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 227 comments

Mapper9@reddit

They weren’t mine, but my dad was infamous for his gifts to my mom. Including a garbage disposal for Mother’s Day, an electric keyboard for her birthday (she’s tone deaf and not into music), and an Atari computer (it was 1985) when she had zero interest in computers. I think there was also an iron in there. All of these either were his interests or benefitted him. She divorced him. My stepdads mom gave me clothes that were too small, great stuff but too small, and without return labels, and those hand cream/body wash/perfume baskets. Every freaking year. She was a bitch.

I feel like we xennials were the last generation that had parents do wildly unsafe stuff with us without second thought. Stories?

The back of our Volvo wagon wouldn’t latch. You’d go over a pothole and the trunk door would pop and slam. Yet we were allowed to roll around in the back all the time, especially playing “log roll” back there, literally rolling with the curves. It would have been so easy to fall out! By the time I was 5, I was making my parents their after dinner cup of decaf coffee. That’s a 5 year old with a pot of boiling water. Say nothing of being a 7 year old latchkey kid. I got offered a ride by a stranger in 2nd grade on the way home once.

If you wanted to check someone was really a Xennial and not faking, what would you ask to test them?

I punched my sister in the face because of one, accidentally. I was trying to tie something around its belly so it would stay turned on. My sister was sitting next to me helping, and my hand slipped, punching her in the face. Cracks me up now to think about it, mom was furious at the time.

What’s something you’re surprised you lived through, as a kid? I’ll go first:

Mapper9@reddit

Biking home in high school, I had to bike up a steep hill, then turn more than 90 degrees down a gravel and dirt road that would take me to the secret path that cut through to my neighborhood. I misjudged the turn, and completely slid out, sliding down the gravel hill on my thigh in my shorts. A random guy in a pickup saw me crash, stopped and just scooped me up, bike and all, and drove me home while I sobbed and hiccuped and was a mess. When I got home, I waited until my sister got home, then she also freaked out. Our parents, of course, were at work, so she grabbed the emergency $20 in dads drawer and ran down to the 7-11 for a bottle of peroxide, stood me in the shower and rinsed me down while I screamed. I still remember the sound of the pebbles hitting the tub. She wrapped my leg in a towel and got me onto the couch. There was no way to get ahold of dad at work, and mom just said she’d be home later, clearly it wasn’t a big deal. When they got home, they figured my sister did a good enough job, and didn’t do anything more. My thigh is now oddly shaped and I still have a numb patch.

"Do you have any sales experience?" Me:

If you grew up in a stricter home, what random (non-religous based) things banned when you were a kid?

Simpson and “adult” cartoons, sugary cereal, soda, clothes that advertised brands, any pets other than cats or dogs. I’m sure there’s more. It wasn’t that they were strict, just weird.

Are there lines from Classic Simpsons which were never memed and which you’ve never seen anyone quote but which still keep popping into your head?

By no means a deep cut, but did anyone else see this way too young because it was rated PG?

We had it on tape. The only scene my parents skipped when recording it was the face melting. I always assumed my parents thought that any movie with kids was fair game. I saw it when I was 5.

I’ve been singing it all day.

I was given the down payment ($1000) to get a bank loan for a $4k car. It was to teach me “responsibility.” 1992 baby blue Honda civic hatchback. I loved that little thing. Bought it off an exchange student friend who only needed enough money to get her stuff back to Japan and help set herself up.

There was a snowstorm in western Massachusetts New Year’s Eve. I was watching the ball drop with my parents, and about 2 minutes into the new year, the lights flickered. We all froze, then busted out laughing. Crying laughing. It’s the one indelible memory about that night.

She was in prison in Salem Oregon, and when she escaped prison, she hid out a coworkers cousin’s house (in Salem, where I lived in the 2010s). Coworker didn’t know until cousin was arrested for aiding a fugitive. Even that, decades later, makes me feel too close to someone as creepy as her.
