Saw Backrooms with my teenagers and realized they’ll never know the specific boredom that made us

I never felt bored as a kid, probably because getting places and getting ready and arranging things took time and effort. Almost ALWAYS something to do.

I'm starting to look less like 45 and more like 55, if I'm honest with myself, LOL. What's scarier is looking ahead. Without some medical miracle or incredible genetics, we don't have much time left. Hell, I'd be pleased with 20 more years of (decent) health, then keeling over. I'm repairing bridges, being as generous as I can, and saying I love you, a lot more.

I (60M) know that I'm EXTREMELY fortunate. I'm still tight with my best friend from childhood. We are part of a larger group of buddies we call The Crue and we get together several times a year to go out for steak dinners. I've known those guys since high school and we're like brothers and have been for decades. And their wives are so cool and fantastic. I also have three women friends from high school. We text each other incessantly about politics and we get together for sleepovers (PLATONIC) once or twice a year. They're like sisters to me and their partners are just fine with it. I tell women I date that if it's a problem for them, then it just won't work. Then, there's my adult daughter. She and I are BFFs and always will be. Again, I'm extremely fortunate.

This seems pretty legit

I (elder Gen-X) STILL have my goatee (I have a receding chin). Sorry, but it looks good on me and MANY men, IMO. The soul patch--yeah, always thought it looked douchey, LOL.

Companies should accept counteroffers of a lower salary for WFH.

What color is the sky in your world, LOL? Look, all I'm saying, is that if your company wants you to return to office, it would be great if a lower salary was an option in order to work from home. At 10%, the average worker (given the commuting for the average worker is a 12.5% increase in time dedicated to work) would save money, time, stress, and aggravation. And that's BEFORE the extra costs you face, and probably more than doubled if you need paid child care. I'd take a 10% reduction all day. But, you are free to keep holding onto the dream of a corporation acting in the best interests of you and the planet.

Gas, tolls, food, coffee, clothing, wear and tear on your car. in many cases, child care. But, let's take all of that out of the equation. The average American spends an hour each day commuting (that's for both directions, not one way). That's an additional 12.5% (at least, for half of all Americans) that the company is demanding out of you, anyway. You're already coming out ahead by 2.5 percentage points! Now, add back what I already outlined, PLUS aggravation and stress and zero flexibility. If you don't think my way is better, you can't do math and shouldn't be calling anyone incompetent.

Given the choice between mandatory in-office work at current salary and permanent WFH at 10% reduced salary, I'm coming out ahead. IDK what your commute looks like or how much it costs you to get there, work there, and return home, but for me, it's better to not commute. If you don't mind the costs in money and time and enjoy the commute and lack of flexibility (and costs less than 10% of your salary), then more power to ya, friend.

What happened to the IT profession?

You know how many IT guys I've seen on Reddit laughing along with the posts that they solve the problem by googling it, or hit some github site for solutions and raw code? I remember my programmer buddies in the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s reading book after book, magazine article after magazine article, while sitting next to their PC and writing original code. It was a never-ending education and trial-and-error for them. One of them wrote his own code in assembly and built his own compiler. THIS is how everything got hollowed out. I understand because I couldn't do what my buddies did, but I'd bet that 90% of today's programmers lack actual basic knowledge and skill through sheer laziness, but have excellent search skills.
