Gen Z has brought back dumb '70s porn mustaches, and Millennials brought back gross scraggly Civil War beards. What ill-advised facial hair was Gen X responsible for?

Oh, man, it's goatees, isn't it?
thebronzeprince@reddit
Van Dyke. I’m holding onto it until I lose at least 20 more pounds, and minimize my weak chin
404LeadsNotFound@reddit
It was supposed to be mutton chops, but I think they all skipped that.
ComprehensivePeanut5@reddit
The soul patch. The goatee.
thebronzeprince@reddit
Your mama has an interesting past, I see
EddieKroman@reddit
Sorry, our generation is responsible for goatees. I hated them,
I tried to grow a beard when it started to become fashionable. It came in grey, white, blonde, red, and brown. With bald spots. I looked like a calico cat with mange.
Needless to say I’m still clean shaven.
STYLIE@reddit
The goatee was what our elementary school principal had and you wouldn’t be caught dead with one of those giant beards or you’d look like the local scout master
Connor51501@reddit

Me too! And I’m keeping the soul patch.

My husband still has his, too!

I can’t see a goatee and moustache as anything but a vagina with teeth. I hate them SO MUCH!!

Head shaved on one side and long in the front. That’s what I was sporting.
harpejjist@reddit
Who is responsible for man buns?
Full_Equipment_1958@reddit
Go fucking tees! A very worn out fashion for men.
Itchy-Mechanic-1479@reddit
Men with pierced ears.
freerangeXkid@reddit
No matter how long the trend continues I'm still always confused when I see a younger gen with a porn stache. It confounds me. The only three who pulled off the mustache even back then was Magnum PI, The Bandit, and my dad (a career Naval officer who my mom thought looked like Tom Selleck so he grew it out lol)
monstermashslowdance@reddit
You forgot about firefighters.
RandomWarthog79@reddit
Probably goatees. Thank god I can't grow facial hair. Putting aside the disgusting soup-strainer aspect, I dunno how you guys walk around with that shit on your face.
PlanktonPlane5789@reddit
I rock a full beard and only shave my upper cheeks on the either side of my nose. Even then I just use clippers to get it "close enough", I rarely actually use a razor. I'm GenX but I only do it this way because shaving on a daily basis is a god-damned chore and who has time for that?! 🤣
RandomWarthog79@reddit
To be fair, I hear that. If I had to shave more than once or twice a week, I'd probably have bearded up decades ago out of sheer laziness.
phillyphilly19@reddit
So much facial hair hate here.
bankrobbery@reddit
For real. Growing different kinds of facial hair is fun. So what?
ejfordphd@reddit

I had a gen x boyfriend with a 70's porn mustache and it was adorable. Very clever of these kids to pull that one back out. Girls loved this guy. We dated &I would have wanted him forever but he wanted this girl who was crazy gifted and started her own computer company. He himself was a contractor pothead. Didn't matter to her. Unfortunately he fell victim to heroin chic and the heroin fillers gave him cancer.
bbonerz@reddit
This sounds like a Black Mirror episode.
thereverendpuck@reddit
The stupid thing is, the chin and mustache connection isn’t a goatee. It’s a van dyke. A goatee is just the hair on the chin.
Almost as dumb as mistaking actual fedoras (what Indiana Jones wore) and trilbies (what the m’lady cringelords wore).
Ravenloff@reddit
Hey...you lost van dyke. I lost decimate and sentient. We just have to get past it.
tomcat_tweaker@reddit
Decimate hurts. I'd also like to pour one out for penultimate.
Ravenloff@reddit
Penultimate still means the same thing, no? Are the heathens using it instead of ultimate!?!
tomcat_tweaker@reddit
Oh, yes. Penultimate means more ultimate now.
Ravenloff@reddit

shadowstar36@reddit
I still rock a goatee. Have since the late 90s. Also had a mullet as a kid for a year or two (don't tell anyone, it was 1986/87 come on). Then had split part mid length hair and unbuttoned flannels. It was the early 90s.
rando_calrissian79@reddit
This is similar to my hair journey. I also had a fauxhawk for a few years at the turn of the 90s). I still have a goatee because I don't like a full beard and my face looks really weird without facial hair (I'm bald too).

How about rat tails. There was mullets and then rat tails were just a small strand in the back.
What about the side shaved/undershave with long hair and pulled back in a ponytail? Seen a few of teens with those in the early 90s.

Goatee. Back in like 1994, after getting back from a deployment, a bunch of us went on leave and went back to see our families for a week. Upon everyone’s return, we all met out at the bar. I was guilty of the gotee....I hate my chin, one night in 91 or 92 I was watching Married with children and behold it was the episode thay the son grew one. I was 16/17 so it took a couple weeks, around 46 I just went full beard. My chin has not been shaved since the night that episode premiered.
anchises868@reddit
I keep a mustache and goatee (unconnected at the sides) when I don’t have a beard. I’ve shaved my chin exactly four times in the two decades since I got out of the Navy. The last time I did it was around the start of 2025 and each one of my kids (teenagers) told me I had to grow it back. My 19yo said I looked like an alien.
And so there may never be a fifth time.

The Van Dyke and the soul patch.
My very Gen X ex hums and is currently sporting a handlebar mustache for some insane reason. It’s 2026, not 1880, Jason.
Shango-s_Daughter@reddit
The handlebar is often popular with firefighters.
wakattawakaranai@reddit
I feel like GenX and millennials have to fight it out (in "no, U!" style) over who was responsible for the handlebar stache and viking beard over the past 20 years, because it sure wasn't genZ doing that yet.
...in my circle I'll be honest it was GenX Rennies who led the charge. That Guy From LARP who was definitely born in the mid-70s like me.

Practical_Clue_2707@reddit
I would. My 30 year old son and have that sort of picking relationship. I flat out something like my man, what’s with the porn stash? He would say something like mom don’t be gross. It’s not called that anymore.

Mennonite Beard. I still wear one sometimes.
pilfro@reddit
Style itself has hardly changed since 2000s. Watch a TV show like the office and see if Jim looks like someone from 20 years ago. Now look at difference between 1990 and 1985.

Millennials didn’t bring back facial hair it was already there. We perfected beard options. The gross beards is from a particular careless subculture.
FlatSixFun@reddit
I kind of miss the hipster look. Not that I partook, I was 10-15 years too old for it. But it feels like the last time there was a cohesive fashion/style movement. Everything since has felt sloppy and lacking any kind of cohesion. Probably as the result of the fracturing of a monoculture. I’m sorry, but wearing sweatpants/pajamas/slippers out and about is not a good look.

Oh 100%… Its a bit sloppy to say the least lol

I had a rough cowlicked Skywalker until 17 when a barber told me my part was on the right, and proceeded to change my hairstyle. Alternative-Law4626@reddit
Yeah, I was in Ft Benning at 17. Hair, all but shaved off for 13 weeks. After that, I’d do a high and tight at least once a year. Otherwise, just regulation short.

Same we could go to a regulation cut at mos school but no one dared. In reserves I’d just barely get enough cut to pass inspection and let it grow for a month before needing another. I do hate the cop mustache. I work with a small branch of the military and every mustache looks like a porn stash to me. It’s not masculine either. Then they retire and try dumb shit like handle bars. In meetings they all touch and stroke their new beards like it’s a secret code. One combs it. Sometimes I’m afraid I rub my chin because eventually it’s made me crazy. Then I also do it just to get them to stop.

On one drunken night I talked about shaving it off and my wife (also drunk) commented that it might make my face look fatter. I'm 60. I didn't see sideburns really start coming back until the very late 80s or early 90s, whenever Luke Perry showed up with them on 90210. Well, if you define Gen X as '65 to '80 or so, then we could be blamed for mutton chops and giant Sam Elliot style mustaches. Fashion (if that's what we're calling it) is cyclical and there's really nothing new under the sun. It's just about recycling something from the past and combining it with something else in a different way. Me too. I’m 53F and I’ve always thought a goatee was more attractive on a guy than a full beard. Perhaps because my first boyfriend had a goatee (my dad only had a moustache), but who really knows.
BlurryBigfoot74@reddit
When I was on Tinder I met a girl who just got out of prison (didn't know till later) and she always wanted me to wear a goatee and I think about that a lot.
Then one day I was parked across the street at a hospital when the shift change happened and every guard that went in and came out had a goatee.
thisisntmyotherone@reddit
Wow. I have a few thoughts about that. I can’t think we, collectively speaking, are or were, any more susceptible to peer pressure than anybody other generation. It’s always been there and it always will be. This, of course, doesn’t account for social media, obviously.
But every guard with a goatee is crazy. I wonder if it was a bet or ‘let’s see who has the best’ or something like that.
Did your ex-flame ever see these guys? That might explain why she was so insistent on her wanting you to grow a goatee haha!
In this woman’s opinion, if it’s blowing in the breeze: it’s too fucking long! Although George Michael didn’t have a goatee, the length of his scruff was ‘perfetto!’
BlurryBigfoot74@reddit
I don't think she saw a guard but I know she really liked one in particular. He also had a bald head and she vaguely made a suggestion to shave my head once. I have a full head of hair in my early 50s and I feel lucky so that suggestion seemed wild.
It was about 10-11 guards coming in and out and every single one had a goatee. I thought it was hilarious.
She wasn't really an ex flame, we went on a few dates. It became obvious she struggled with alcohol and I didn't want to carry that weight. Dating at our age can be rough, everyone has baggage but I'd at least like matching luggage.

I've been thinking about this for like 20 years-
If you ever listen to a casual, off the cuff prayer from those dudes, (sort of general white evangelical Christians in the last 20 years) you might notice that they use "just" a lot as in
"Lord, we just ask that..."
It's weird. I think it's a way to minimize what they're asking for, like to let Jesus know that what they're asking for is not really too much, It's not going to be too much work for Jesus, it's basically like the least he could do.
It's weird, but it's super common once you start looking for it.

If you look up any photos of these 5 guys, between 1989-1991, and then look at a young man now, between the ages of 15-22, the likelihood that he will have a similar hairstyle that one of the members of NKTOB had is highly likely.
But you will ask yourself, are these modern day men’s hairdos Hanging as Tough as The Boys from Boston claimed to be?

Yep. Goatee. But the moustache to chin beard is actually called a Van Dyke. The goatee is just the chin beard. Which was prevalent too and worse than a Van Dyke. Which I wore for far too long through the 90s. And yes, the soul patch was the worst. Especially when guys grew just a long soul patch
Ted_Rid@reddit
Oh, whaddaya know. Turns out I used to sometimes do a Van Dyke. Always thought it was a goatee.
Truth be told, it was when I was too lazy to shave fully, coz the bristles are that much tougher in that area. So I'd do a half shave and leave the tough part for another day. Then it might stick around for a fortnight.
Never a style choice, pure laziness. Also maybe coz there were enough around it didn't seem like I was trying to do a thing?

SumthingBrewing@reddit
I’ve gone through all the facial hair phases. I’m guilt. Goatee, soul patch, homeless looking long beard. Never a mustache though. I know I can’t pull that off.
I’ve come to the conclusion that the best facial hair is a neatly trimmed beard. I like mine slightly full, but trimmed so that it’s a consistent length. And for god’s sake, shave your cheeks, lower neck and ears! And I color mine with Just For Men since it’s have random pops of white bursting through. When the white is more consistent I might let it go. But coloring (not too dark!) definitely knocks 10 years off my face.

I don't think anything is inherently "dumb". Each generation has things that are "cool" and "dumb". If you ask people in the 1800s what they think about 1990s' styles they'd probably say it's the dumbest thing ever. So I don't mind styles coming and going, and I certainly don't judge anybody about what they chose to do with their hair or beard or mustaches, I'm a very "live and let live" guy that way.

I didn't grow my muttonchops until 2006 or so, and they lasted about a year.
handsomeape95@reddit
Guilty. I'd gladly rock them again but I don't need to add any more to the grey display.
Global-Jury8810@reddit
Gen X, yours is goatees and soul patches for sure. I think beards are a Xennial doing because it’s the younger people doing the Ted Lasso 70s porn stache.
JimTheJerseyGuy@reddit
Who needs facial hair when you’re rocking the most awesome mullet imaginable!
Coconut-bird@reddit
Gen Z has brought that one back and paired it with a 70s porn stache.
hippiechick725@reddit
Damn that’s nasty 😆
Maverick-Mav@reddit
They call it a mullet and mo. I was seriously shocked to see this in this day and age.

Fudloe@reddit
Still shocked by the existence of this trend.
Fudloe@reddit
I've had a full beard almost consistently since high school, around '85.
Interspersed with an ill-advised long soul patch episode and a few bouts of an imperial and goatee in the fashion-backward 90's.
However, I haven't shaved nor trimmed in 30 years. And my gross, scraggly Civil War beard, just like my dad had in the 60's & 70's scored me my honey of 11 years who is way outta my league. So...
CowboyNeale@reddit
70s porn stache and side burns were big in the second half of the 90s.

Some serious Boomer vibe coming off this post.
punktualPorcupine@reddit
Yeah, agree cranky old boomer Karen energy.
Do not like it.
Let people do whatever, it’s their choices, they have to live with it. We had enough of that attitude thrown on us, break the cycle.
No one has to perfectly recreate the boomer lifecycle.
God damn it stop, turning into them. Be the cool chill old people, for once in a generation.
“Whatever” the fuck out of these dumbass “get off my lawn and get a hair cut” posts or just admit you’re a fuckwit boomer who’s trying to pretend they’re young and go post this crap with your minions memes on boOkFaCe.
BlueProcess@reddit
Yeah it's disturbing how some Xers are going full boomer. You do not represent me lol

Goatee?
Repulsive-Carpet9400@reddit
Well, I'm the oldest of 5 kids. Technically, I'm a boomer but all of my siblings are considered Gen X.
What's commonly called a "Goatee" is really a "Van Dyke." The goatee is without the mustache.
I digress.
Every single one of my sisters' boyfriends had a Van Dyke. I couldn't tell them apart. They all looked the same. I thought it was some kind of club.
CrumblinEmpire@reddit
Yes. We wanted the beatnik look, but a couple years later every baseball player had the goatee, so it took the shine right off our shoes.

I thought we were the first significant victims of the bowl cut? I know I had one as a young kid, but it wasn’t something I actively chose.
ToddPundley@reddit
Pretty sure Silent Generation (and very late Greatest Generation) got stuck with the original bowl cut during the Depression.
MeinePerle@reddit
Was it the Mary Lou Retton cut or was that another gymnast?
throttledog@reddit
That was NOT our fault or choice! 🤷♂️😂 Started as soon as sharp knives came along. Mom pulled out the soup bowl like her parents and their parents. Alternative-Law4626@reddit
I did the bald and goatee thing in the aughts. When I made the switch, I was consulting in DC in a building where I was one of 3 white people who worked there.
On seeing me one of the guys I worked with (peer to boss level) said, “Hey, hey, hey! Whatever it was, we didn’t mean it!” The implication was that I now looked like I was about to kill everyone. On the other hand, the ladies liked it — a lot. Maybe because I now looked dangerous.
CeeTheWorld2023@reddit

Flared sideburns with a goatee or soul patch, no mustache. I rocked that look well into the 2010s. Nowadays if you see someone with flared sideburns 9 times out of 10 they're about to ask you to pick a card, any card.
monkey-kong666@reddit
Goatees. They straddled all aspects of culture, from bogans/trailer park (stone cold Steve Austin) grunge bands (Chris Cornell, layne staley etc) to movie stars (Brad Pitt).
firetomherman@reddit
Oh man mid to late 90's I grew my hair out and grew a stupid goatee on the bottom of my chin with no mustache. Brother made fun of me all the time and he should have. Getting my haircut was the best thing ever lol.

builtinamplifier@reddit

Wactout@reddit
It’s definitely goatees.
Troublemonkey36@reddit
Well everyone says goatee. But that’s not the correct word. It’s circle beard. A goatee was not the dominant facial hair thing of GenX. It was circle beard!
Dewey_Coxxx@reddit
Never heard of a circle beard. A goatee is just beard, a vandyke is beard and mustache.
Troublemonkey36@reddit
A circle beard is mustache and beard connected and the beard is in a circle (really more of an an oval), and is not present on the back of the jaw. This is the style that Gen X brought out of hibernation and were wearing everywhere.
A Van Dyke is when the beard and mustache do not connect and the beard part is more a triangle.
A goatee is just the triangle or hair hanging from under the lip and over the chin. And that’s it. Sometimes it’s smaller, sometimes larger. It was not that popular in the nineties or by Gen X in general. But it did show up a bit more with Gen X than some other generations .
SunBelly@reddit
Goatee is correct. The classic goatee is a chin beard with no mustache. There are goatee styles that can also be circle beards, but not all. Most are chin beard only or detached chin beard and mustache. Chin beard only goatee is the one most of us are referring to because it fits the cringe premise of the thread - particularly long goatees.
Troublemonkey36@reddit
Well that’s not the one that was very popular in the nineties. And most folks here probably think it’s the circle beard. It’s a very common mistake. Very few people wore goatees in the nineties. Many wore the circle beard.

Today I learned men:goatees::women:bangs
goingloopy@reddit
There’s some truth to this. Except that bangs take way longer to grow out, especially if you say “I’m growing out my bangs” out loud. Before that, I felt like I had to trim them every day. Growing them out took at least a year and cutting my hair shorter to match them.
And if you’re a woman in perimenopause, you START growing a fucking goatee while the hair on your head is not growing.

I gotta say that we can’t completely take credit for the soul patch. My uncle, born in the 30s and a veteran of Vietnam, was sporting one throughout the late 70s/early 80s. Much to the chagrin of his mother/my Granny.
