How to get the hospital to take me seriously (women)?

I have heard multiple stories now of women taking a male friend/relative posing as their partner to an appointment, and when the man talks for the woman about her symptoms, it is suddenly taken seriously. What a sad reality we live in.

Are you any good at ironing? Could look into setting up an ironing business, although it might not earn you enough. Don't go into any job which requires contact by phone (with customers) or regular meetings. You could look into online SW - there are agencies which do text only (no camera), you just have to commit to a certain amount of hours per week but you can set the times you want to work. However, the big money there is usually after 8pm and on weekends.

Depends on how frustrating my day was. Good day: pierce 5 times or so. Bad day: so many times I might as well remove the film lid. And anything in-between.

My boyfriend is a little heavy and tall, he has bad knees but I'd like to get him something in the garden he can enjoy, I have a hammock and garden bean bag but what would be suitable?

Not bad for the knees as such, but a challenge to get out of for anyone with mobility issues. I always love a hammock, once in it I'm like 'Oh shit, how am I gonna get out?' At least it's entertaining for anyone watching me try.

I once had an Adam Jones or similar with a heavy Indian accent ringing me once, and I went along the lines of 'Sure you are', and hung up. Since then I met a Gordon Smith, who had a full Italian accent. English father, Italian mother, lived in Italy until he moved to England in his early twenties. 😂

We don't have GCH, just electric, but we rarely put it on. We just layer up and stay comfy that way. We did indulge in an electric blanket in bed, but as it is quite mild we've now taken it off. Maybe suggest your partner uses hot water bottles or a single electric blanket on his seat(s).

received a weird letter addressed to my house, is it a scam?

Posted by neochuu@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 57 comments

ItsGoodToChalk@reddit

Incorrect. It is only illegal if you use the contents to the detriment of the addressee. For example, if the addressee wins a prize, and you claim it as yours instead. Another example, the addressee is sent a gift card and you use it instead. Opening a letter on its own is not illegal.

I do that as we are still getting mail for a family who haven't lived here for 5 years. I then let the sender know they don't live at our address anymore, haven't done for 5 years and we do not have a forwarding address.

Why do you not talk to your once bestfriend anymore?

ItsGoodToChalk@reddit

We used to share a house, and when she lost her job (because she turned up severely hungover one too many times) I'd cover her share of bills for a while. Whilst we lived together I usually did the shopping, cooked, cleaned, made sure her visiting kids were fed in the morning because she preferred a lie-in. When her kids were meant to stay overnight, she'd regularly ring her ex-husband to pick them up again saying they couldn't settle and were upset because they were missing him too much. Not true, she did it so she could go out with her friends. I moved out, and she stayed in the house and I made it very clear she was now responsible for all bills. This was about 3 months after she lost her job. I made the landlord aware I was moving out. About two months after I moved out I got a message from the landlord that he couldn't reach her and was she okay, as no rent had been received. I contacted her and she promised to sort it out. Her ex-husband also tried to help her by helping her sort out benefits, but she ended up getting evicted for non-payment of rent. I was a lodger at a mutual friend's house, and sucker as I was I asked our friend (my landlady) if she could move in with us and I'd share my kingsize bed with her. Again she had no money for her share of rent and bills as she still had no job and wasn't signing on. But there was suddenly always money for nights out and ciggies. By this time she got infatuated with a guy in Scotland, he was the love of her life etc etc. I was so fed up of her antics, I told her I'd buy her a one way-ticket so she could see him and find out how she really felt about him, and just say the word and I'd buy her a ticket back. She never came back, only for visits where I paid for her ticket when she'd cry she missed her kids so much. During one of those visits she was raging that a vague mostly online friend had not informed her personally that she got engaged and that she had to find out online. She was really angry and upset about that. Colour me surprised when I had to find out through Facebook she got engaged to some other dude different from the original one! I decided to step back then, finally realised I was only being used. Before all of the above, I was married to a narcissistic prick and we took her in for a while. There was a pregnancy scare then - I knew he was shagging her. However, years living with a narcissist meant I was easily manipulated when we split up by the next one - her. She married the second Scottish bloke, had two more kids with him, then had an acrimonious divorce. I was still in contact with her ex-husband for a few years, he had full custody of both their children, and throughout the years she often bailed out on seeing them, even when she was in town, because she preferred going out with mates. She'd also promise big presents to her kids and then not buy them, so her ex-husband felt compelled to. She was a piece of work!

Will my manager think I am lying if I keep asking to WFH rather than sick day?

Posted by Obvious_Armadillo_16@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 8 comments

ItsGoodToChalk@reddit

If you keep saying you're too ill to come into the office, but well enough to WFH, they might insist you take sick days instead and do not work at all until you are fully better and well enough to come into the office again. This is to cover their own backs, and for your welfare. You will probably have welfare-meetings to investigate why you are too sick to work in the office, but well enough to WFH, and what they.can do to support you. If you have less than two years' service and have an office-contract, they may also dismiss you.

What career were you advised to do when you were at school?

I grew up in the Netherlands, so it was a bit different for me, but I told my careers advisor I wanted a career in hotels or something with languages, like a translator. He advised against it as there would be no work available or difficult to get into. I went against his advice, and went on to a college specialising in different aspects of tourism. I had a successful career in various hotels in the Netherlands and England for a few years, followed by a stint working in a travel agency. I now work in finance, as bilingual-skilled collector working with customers around the world.

I'm 50 - I was married from my mid- to late twenties and we 'owned' (mortgage). Since then I've either been a lodger or tenant. Due to mental health-issues I don't give value to money and have no savings. I now live with my partner on a lodger-basis. He owns the flat and I don't pay towards the mortgage, just bills. Maybe if we move again we might get a joint mortgage.

If you are genuinely happy doing this, fine. However, it will not be great for your physical health. Invest in an electric blanket to put on your workchair - doesn't cost much to run whilst you're working, and you will have a better posture sitting up properly, and you stay warm.

What is the British etiquette of wearing a suit with tie in the office?

Posted by Reeelfantasy@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 67 comments

ItsGoodToChalk@reddit

You need to ask, as it hugely depends on the work you do and the culture at your specific office. Customer-facing roles (where you meet people in person) traditionally wear smarter attire. Saying that, IT then tends to be more 'polos with chinos'-kind of vibe. Offices I have worked in usually had a 'smart-casual' vibe - no jeans, no tshirts, no trainers but full suit not required. But again, it's best to ask what their dress code is.

We take regular trips if we find a good deal. We wouldn't spend £500 on a weekend away in a log cabin in the woods just for the sake of it, but if we see a good hotel deal for like £200 for a long weekend we might do it. We also visit my family in the Netherlands, and go somewhere warmish abroad in winter.

I lived on the 8th floor of a 16 floor-building. In a split second I happened to look up from my lunch and saw something large fall past my balcony. I went out on my balcony, looked down and I'll let you fill in the rest. If I had not looked up from my plate, I would have completely missed the moment, as there was no sound whatsoever. Will stay with me forever.

I have built my life around it - if I can't get there by walking or public transport or by arranging (never expecting or demanding) a lift, I won't go. Nevertheless, I have (had) a varied life.

How long do you leave your dogs at home?

You will not be able to adopt if you're both at work all day. Not even when you offer doggie day care or a walker to come in. Rescues are very strict on that, and any legit breeders will also refuse you. On an article about adoption I once read, one couple was refused despite at least one of them being at home all day due to WFH. The rescue wanted both to be home.

The correct title is Only Fools and Horses - there may have been some confusion if you mentioned 'Fools and Horses' combined with an accent. Did you mention Del Boy, Rodney, Uncle Albert, Trigger? I would say most people aged 35 upwards will have heard of it, with many younger people too. Lines from the show are often quoted, and the show is often repeated. It is one of the best loved shows in the UK.
