Apparently 6000 planes fly over the UK every single day. Why can't I see far more planes when I look up? I see maybe one every 10 minutes. Why is that?

I live in a place where quite a few of the planes are. I call the flight path “The Skidmark” which incidentally is how some people feel about my home too lmao

I just buy jeans that have too big of a waist to fit my thighs which makes it look like I have massive junk (just a big empty fabric bulge sadly). I keep meaning to try braces as I hear that’s better for trousers that fit your thighs but don’t fit your waist. Anyone in the comments tried braces lmk lol 😬

Bros complaining about moss on his walls when he’s too lazy to jet wash his patio smdh… Idk maybe clean shit once in a while… with you guessed it a jet washer. Also read a book ffs you can’t permanently and DO NOT use awful chemicals it’s a damp shaded retaining wall with moisture vents. You’re always going to get moss. Jet wash the wall once a year after the winter or be a normal person and let it age naturally.

Is my new plasterboard and skim shoddy work?

Posted by majima_goro888@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 20 comments

Groffulon@reddit

My ceilings look better than that and they were plastered in the 1930s… It looks like either there’s shit in the mix that ended up on your ceiling or they’re just terrible at trowelling. Are they expecting you to do a ton of sanding of rough spots and filling work around pipes and edges after they were paid to plaster a whole ceiling? The ceiling should be ready for priming when plastering is done. Can sometimes be a little sanding/cleaning to do here and there but nothing like this. This is not ready for paint at all. What did they trowel it with a pizza box? If you can see the plasterboard lines either it is badly fitted or the skim isn’t thick enough. If you can see the skim tape the plaster is not thick enough. If there are long ridges or lumps in the work they’ve done a shit job. That finishing on the edging is atrocious. Looks like they don’t know how to edge internal corners… That’s just what I can see in a picture from far… This is one of those situations where I’m not sure I’d even want them back to tidy it up it’s so piss poor. Mate I’m sorry but you got done. That needs proper tidying up and then another skim.

Where did the myth about Cadbury changing their recipe come from?

Groffulon@reddit

Well it used to taste like gorgeous chocolate filled chocolate with a pint and a half of milk or whatever and now it tastes like palm oily chocolate flavoured sugar formed into a spongy slop block. How do I know? I was born in 1980 and I remember exactly what Cadburys used to taste like. Whatever this slop is. It’s not Cadburys. It bends before it breaks… Op you think they’re going to admit to ensloppifying their product? Everything is being changed on the sly to extract more profit from the same deal or made smaller for higher price. They think we don’t notice but we do. If something no longer hits like it used to then I just won’t buy it any more. These trashy companies are actually making me healthier. Soft drinks, sweets, chocolate, crisis are all slowly being made shitter and shitter and I notice immediately and won’t buy it again. It’s not a myth and if they convinced you then this posts reflects that they’re winning this race to the sloppy bottom.

Question for anyone aged 45+: Do you remember drinking Lucozade when you were younger? Did you ever drink it for anything else than when you were ill?

Posted by Lopsided-Skill6659@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 478 comments

Groffulon@reddit

I used to be allowed to have a fizzy Lucozade Sport as my ”drink” with a pack of Brannigan’s before Sunday lunch in the 80s so my parents could crack into the proper drinks (they were fine with drinking shed tons of alcohol but fizzy drinks were the devil so only Lucozade Sport was allowed as it was “healthy” and endorsed by famous sportspeople at the time… Welcome to my parents classic 80s alcohol dependant LoGiC...) That pre-lunch fizzy drink then graduated in to a Shandy Bass and then in to beer and all the rest. Now I’m years teetotal after fighting and winning my own battles with alcohol dependency. My gateway drug to drinking was kind of Lucozade Sport. Lucozade Sport. Not Even Once. Lmao. But yeah my memory of actual orange Lucozade was always a big bottle on a table in hospital with grapes and tacky cards and flowers. Don’t know how the marketing team worked that one into the NHS somehow lol. It always was and always has been pure sugar.

First year without booze and weed in at least two decades. It was hard but I’m getting there. Sorry I’m probably a bit raw about it rn. But I’m never looking back Fortunately I don’t really have to contend with too much social stuff this year apart from watching my various family getting plastered… Fun… AND supportive… My “treat” (other than the food, snacks and sweets lol) that really helped was actually non-alcohol beers which I don’t ever normally have because it’s too close to the bone or so I thought… My gf and I got this lovely cheeseboard (because why not I would have spent five times that or more on booze) and I thought well I can’t drink coke or fizzy juice with that. Tried Proper Job and Lazer Crush by Beaver town. They were absolutely lovely. Non-alc beers have come a long way and I just picked up a couple recommended on Reddit from the supermarket. It was very strange to drink a “beer” and not have that feeling of “One is good two must be better” buzz that I just can’t control. It’s almost like a savoury soft drink. Highly recommend as a one off treat. Too many habitual memories for it to be regular thing for me but it actually felt like a treat that I can actually control. Really made me realise how much of a drug alcohol really is. But yeah honestly not joining the festivities kinda sucked. I’m someone that liked to party and have fun and I was honestly really bored at points but I realise that’s on me to figure out with healthy experiences and activities. Also I just have to remember that the last time I relapsed I blacked out and ended up in A&E with head trauma so there is no turning back for me. To anyone out there that thinks they have a problem or need help then I believe in you and if you’re on the fence about giving up then just do it. Try a day, a week, a month. I honestly wouldn’t be here typing this if I hadn’t so if you think you drink too much on the regular, that you have a problem stopping once you start or that you are just unhappy with your relationship with booze then please get help and give sobriety a go.

I have the same issues as you around gift giving. I have AuDHD. Not being able to fathom and then overthinking social rules is one of the many facets of the condition. Might be a coincidence or something to think about. Could just be British weirdness but most other people I come across are much like your boyfriend. You give what you give and that’s the end of it. If you over or under gift so be it… Personally I can’t stand this. Surprise gift giving at big events like Xmas and Birthdays was a concept invented by companies to get you to buy tat nobody wants. I want to get someone something they actually want and will use. Don’t even get me started on how to decide what to spend… I have to get to work lol But suffice to say I always end up overspending buying lavish gifts just to avoid what you’re talking about. My girlfriend always says it’s the thought that counts and I try to but then what if my gift looks like I haven’t thought about it AND I haven’t spent any money…? I literally can’t win so new iPad it is… I honestly do feel your pain because I don’t think the is an easy answer.

Posted by AncientDawn7775@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 109 comments

Groffulon@reddit

You do not have insomnia. You have to maintain a healthy sleep schedule. Night work, partying and drinking caffeine are not maintaining a healthy sleep schedule. Until you figure out if you can’t sleep when you have set bed times, no caffeine and plenty of time to sleep then you don’t have insomnia. Insomnia is when an otherwise healthy person making all the right choices can’t sleep. This is not your life right now. Sorry mate you’re just living an unhealthy life and that causes difficulty sleeping which is not a diagnosis for insomnia. Learn to sleep between shifts after night work or quit night work it’s that simple. Also if you drink caffeine it will affect your sleep possibly without you realising. When it comes to caffeine you have to think in half-lives. Caffeine is a drug that lowers your ability to feel tired. All drugs have half-lives in the body they enter. The half life of caffeine in the body on average is 6-8 hours. This means if you drink a coffee at 12 noon you will still have half the caffeine of that coffee in your body being active at 6-8 pm. The stronger the coffee or the more you have the longer it lasts. So a caffeine half-life can go up to 10-12 hours. Would you have half a cup of coffee at 8-10pm or later then go to bed? Apply this timing to when you drink coffee and you may see a pattern that prevents sleep. Either way hope you can figure it out. It took me years to work out that humans need a healthy life to get healthy sleep and many occupations and behaviours are just unnatural for healthy sleep and therefore life.

My neighbour is slowly driving me insane. Is there anything I can do other than move?

Posted by butterfly3ffect19@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 208 comments

Groffulon@reddit

Honestly your partner is the problem here. Sleep and controlling stress are the most important things to get right for your health. They should want you to be healthy even if it doesn’t affect them. You should stand your ground about moving and if your partner disagrees ask your partner to go talk to this belligerent turd of a man. Literally the reason this man is volatile and smokes is because he doesn’t sleep. Smoking a stimulant at 2am?? That will help him sleep??“Insomniac” Sure ok… not a human turd that dgaf about anyone including their own body… Argues and shouts loud enough for you to hear all the time? That’s a hard pass on the daily. Noise stress and anxiety is a psych diagnosis. Causes a load of health problems over time. What impact does the lack of sleep and noise have on you? On your health? Even if your partner is unbothered? An “insomniac” and shouty moron is not going to suddenly change their biological and habitual behaviour. I was reading on r/science they now think insomnia is caused by gut bacteria. So he’s not going to change his whole lifestyle just for you and will probably get angry at you for suggesting it at worst or maliciously comply at best. Can’t think why your partner is being a chicken over this… Having your windows open in summer in the U.K. given how buildings were/are built should be a human right imo. This unhealthy trash can of a neighbour is preventing what I believe to be a human right. Then add in that these people seem unpleasant and have connections that could make your lives very difficult. What happens if you complain and they use those connections when it comes to selling? Is your residence a forever home? If it is then it’s worth sticking up for. If not then honestly I would just move and your partner should be on your side because the health of the relationship comes first and without sleep and peace we are unhealthy. Some men honestly need to step up for their partners and grow a backbone. If he won’t do anything maybe you also live with a bit of a turd… Sorry to have to say it.

Have you ever had success with a fungal nail treatment?

Posted by WhaleMeatFantasy@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 101 comments

Groffulon@reddit

No matter the treatment you should do what I’m about to suggest anyway. It helps prevent athletes foot which is key to fungal nail prevention and it actually kills the fungus naturally with no filing needed. For sensitive skin - Soak your toes in a plastic basin or foot bath with either 50/50 apple cider vinegar and lukewarm water and soak for 20 minutes once or twice a day OR For less sensitive skin - fill the basin with lukewarm water to soak your nails only then put a tiny squirt of bleach in. Soak for 10 minutes only once a day. Whichever you choose make sure your feet are fully dry before you put socks and shoes on. Make one of these a regular practice once a day and you will see fresh nail growing eventually. No filing. Filing creates infectious dust that will infect other toes. Just soak and wait. Clip any nail growth as normal. Disinfect your clippers and clean your feet after every use or you just spread the fungus. Just soak your feet once or twice a day and watch the healthy nail grow from the back of the nail bed. Might take six months but it’s worked for me. Eventually once you have healthy nails you can just do it once a month to prevent any reoccurrence. Last tip - Make sure you have shoes wide enough for your feet. If your shoes aren’t big enough you’ll often damage your big toe and outer toes. This is an easy way to get infected. Also once you notice fresh nails growing you will want to buy new shoes as the fungus is in your shoes too. Sorry but it is.

If I want to stop buying from Amazon entirely, what British site do I go to for incense sticks, pumpkin pie filling, AAA batteries and badminton shuttlecocks?

Posted by mookx@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 422 comments

Groffulon@reddit

I mean you just have to put the minuscule amount of effort of typing those things into your preferred search engine and ordering them from different U.K. sites and e-shops or search for a shop local to you and dare I say it walk or drive to a shop and buy it. Yes it may be slower or more expensive but often it isn’t and none of your listed items are emergency items apart from batteries which are available in so many shops prob even 24/7. Incense sticks - My go to online is Lotus Zen Incense. Amazing Japanese incense. Not next day but also not funding Bezos. Also if ordering incense is an emergency you’re doing it wrong. Pumpkin pie filling - Plenty of online/bricks and mortar grocers sell fresh and canned pumpkins year round. Even fresh grown pumpkins store for literally months. Canned even longer. Buy some spice. Make your own filling. It’s incredibly easy. Not an emergency requiring Bezos. AAA Batteries - You can buy this literally anywhere at a supermarket/electrical shop/garage/gas station so could be available 24/7. No need for Bezos. Shuttlecocks- Your average large supermarket probably has these. If not Decathlon, Sports Direct, JD Sports sell these both on and offline. But even better if you can find a local sports shop. They still exist in bigger towns. Definitely no need for Bezos. I don’t know what to tell you but sticking it to the man takes just a few clicks or steps more. That’s it. Make more effort. Support local. Even local U.K. corporates like Argos or supermarkets are better than Amazon. Oh and fuck Bezos. Why? Because he doesn’t give a single fuck about anyone else on this planet except himself.

Groffulon@reddit

You’re binge drinking. Binge drinking is a type of alcohol dependency. It’s no longer called alcoholism it’s alcohol dependency. If you can’t control the booze to the recommended level you are addicted and you have to stop. It’s that simple. I’ve been best part of a year sober. Best thing I’ve done. Wish I’d done it years ago. You’re not socialising. You’re getting drunk whilst being in a social setting. These two things are not locked together. If you can’t hang out or do activities with people sober then you have to question whether you do actually like the activity or them. Pubs and clubs are mostly dull af without alcohol. You really know whether you like a band/gig sober too. Being hungover for a day or two is just not worth it for the drunken night every time. Also alcohol is just as cancerous as smoking and actually incredibly addictive causing many symptoms like high blood pressure, inflammation and changes in emotion/mental state for weeks and months after every single drink. I wish someone had convinced me to just quit years ago. I thought I was “just a heavy drinker” but I would literally have a drink now but I know what will happen. I won’t stop until I’m drink because I’m an addict. I wish I could control it and until I can I can’t have it. If that’s never then so be it. Now that I’m fully sober I rarely if ever miss it.

How do I make mates in the office?

Posted by Rhyddid_@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 54 comments

Groffulon@reddit

Be very careful befriending people at work particularly if you’re LGBT/Autistic. If you’ve been there two years and you’ve not made friends with anyone in this group you have to question if they want to be friends AND if you want to be friends with them. Also is work actually a place to make friends? It’s work not a social event. Big difference between actual real life friends and just colleagues. Often good colleagues are far more enjoyable to work with as more of a business relationship than people you think you have a “friendship” with. It’s those closest that let you down the hardest. Consider if daily interactions and conversations at work are really what you want. You will only have so much social battery to go round even being in work and around people. Relationships are about continued and stable interactions over time. This means EVERY time you’re in work you might have to be social whether you want to or not. This can be incredibly tiring. Many people can’t deal with hot and cold if you’re having a bad day and can’t or don’t have the battery to chat the same boring small talk for the millionth time. Many people prioritise chat over work which can also be frustrating. Make sure you honestly want this because social stuff can take on a life if it’s own which is great if that’s what you want. If not it can make work take a lot more energy and a lot harder. If you def do want to make friends then maybe you just haven’t made the right moves yet. It’s going to be harder now the dynamics are in place if you’re known as a “quiet one”. You may have already highlighted any differences you have which may or may not be a bad thing. You’re going to have to put yourself out there with people which they may not expect from you. Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t though if that’s genuinely what you want. Find small ways to do nice things for people in work and build relationships this way. It’s the same in life. A nice cup of tea made, a favour here or there, a how are you? every so often. You have to build these things slowly. Seek out the friendliest of the group and be friendly with them. It’s not rocket science. You’re young so making friends should be a bit easier. Going out for drinks or others being open to social stuff is a bit easier when younger. But you have to want it and to make the effort. Personally (and this is just my xp) I actually think that work and friendships should be separate. There’s an expression which is “don’t shit where you eat”. Every workplace is competitive and I’m not saying it will happen but if someone has the opportunity to throw you under a bus for their own benefit they can and will. Often people with neuro divergence overshare with people that aren’t and they don’t understand that things you said that you assume are in confidence to the friendship are not and then it is used against you in some way. Be wary of this Honestly I am a lot older and AuDHD and have had a lot of bad xp of people at work but this was years ago so ymmv. Don’t let my negativity put you off. Friends can be made in work by small acts of kindness and just getting involved but as I said making friends outside of work would be far preferable if you can. Work friends becoming genuine real life friends is actually quite rare.

Lmao I work construction and if anyone mentions my bun or pony I have a laugh and take the piss back. Literally no one gives a f mate and the more you think they do the more it controls you. First rule of adult life is no one gives a single f about what you’re doing because all they. See about us themselves and even if they did care what f business is it of theirs? The “not washing your legs and feet because the soap and water does it anyway” thing is cod science based on nothing. I work in construction. My legs and feet get dirty, dusty and sweaty under my jeans socks and boots. I can literally see the water not washing my legs and feet clean when I shower if I don’t do anything. Mmm get in bed with dirty legs… How does your wife think the water is cleaning between her toes? That stay stuck together all day? How does she think the dead skin cells, fungus, bacteria and other batter is being scrubbed away? It isn’t… 🤮 All I can say to your wife is ewww. I wash because it’s objectively correct and I can literally see my feet and legs won’t be clean if I don’t but re. your wife most bacteria and fungus are invisible to the human eye… As I said ewww! 🤮 Mate your wife’s feet are actually rank and she should go wash properly. Didn’t her mother tell her to scrub behind the ears and between the toes?!

Why tf would anyone keep them in the oven? Are you telling me that people are leaving them in there while they cook? How many trays do you have? How many oven shelves do you have? People aren’t seriously only using two oven trays? Are they leaving them in the bottom? Well surely that’s no good for heat… Also what if you want to preheat the oven? Do you have to remember to take the trays out every time to use them or face blistering hot trays to put your beige on? I’m with op. Keep the trays in a cupboard like a normal person. Get them out as needed. Also non-stick degrades much faster if you keep reheating it over and over. Keep the oven clear imo!

How come when it's 30 degrees abroad it's lovely, but when it's 30 degrees in the uk, it's unbearable?

Would you rather be trapped in a 200c oven alone… Or trapped in there with a big bowl of water? Obviously it’s the first one. Dry heat is much more manageable. This is why.
