What's the best Toastie you've ever had?

My husband has requested Toasties for his birthday tea and wants a surprise choice of fillings and I'm not having any brainwaves! What are some interesting/delicious combos that you've had
Bksudbjdua@reddit
Cheese and beans.
Macaroni cheese with jalapenos
Arch-Com_Songster@reddit
A croquet madame is a classic for a reason. Wee bit of mustard between the fried egg and the topping you are in toastie nirvana.
Dramatic_Prior_9298@reddit
The guy who delivered my new fridge today told me that he had a beef brisket and cheese toasted sandwich yesterday. I bet that, with a little bit of mustard or onion chutney, would be immense.
UnremarkableCake@reddit
Acorns.
RidgebackRogue@reddit
Bacon and banana with a sweet chili jam
craftyorca135@reddit
Cranberry and sausage? I think it was a christmas costa one. Very nice
CowRaptorCatLady@reddit
Caramelised onion, good cheese, post ham, mix up a little bowl of olive oil, mixed herbs and garlic spread it over the outside of the toasties prior to cooking. Beautiful.
nannyplum@reddit
Leftover lamb leg with mint and goats cheese. Didn't know what to do with leftovers from Sunday Dinner, and I bunged it in the breville. Very lush.
BoringGazelle1654@reddit
Very finely chopped mushrooms, cheddar and sriracha š« š
Bloomfield95@reddit
Cheese and a big blob of Bovril is my favourite
sox_hamster@reddit
Bacon and banana.
RafRafRafRaf@reddit
Peanut butter and damson jam with a really strong mug of coffee. It probably helped that I was beyond exhausted at the time but it was at that moment the best thing I ever put in my mouth.
tcpukl@reddit
Chilli con carne and Greek yogurt.
Oohyabassa@reddit
Dessert toasties for afters - white bread, mashed banana and chopped chocolate (either milk or dark are both good). My absolute favourite!
UndulatingUnderpants@reddit
Chicken snitzel, ham, mozzarella and tomato and basil sauce...basically a Parmo in a toastie.
Agitated-Honeydew-41@reddit
A little goats cheese, your fave kind of toms, a little red onion chutney or actual red onions and mozzarella for stringiness and rocket!!
Emmy182@reddit
I had an Indian inspired one at a cafe recently. Bombay potatoes, peas and corn, served with mango chutney on the side
Electrical-Injury-23@reddit
A friend of mine makes an Indian one with takeaway leftovers. Uses a nan bread instead of normal sliced. It's superb.
CensorTheologiae@reddit
Oh god yeah. A Dahi toastie (google dahi sandwich for recipes)
scotianheimer@reddit
Ooo, nice. Like a big bread samosa.
potato2296@reddit (OP)
This sounds heavenly
Londoner_999@reddit
I make Panini instead of toasties using part-baked baguettes, the type that sells in supermarkets for around £1 a pair. I don't bother baking them, they toast up nicely in my contact grill.
My favourite is to spread each side with ajvar, a sweet pepper paste from The Balkans, then add salami and some grated mozzarella.
Punyverse@reddit
Sourdough with mayo gochujang coating.
Cheese and kimchi inside
Rogue but delish
teacupisbigger@reddit
May I recommend my favourite: kimchi + blue cheese + sprunion. Killer grilled cheese
Majestic_Matt_459@reddit
Iām trying that. I love that combo I may do butter instead of mayo but Iām. intrigued. Iāve never used Mayo on outside of a toastie. Matt do the mayo live for once. I might also add some shredded pork but just a little.
Thx
thatstoomuchsauce@reddit
The big sellers at my work are brie/bacon/cranberry and cheddar/ham/pineapple. I'm also partial to hummus/spinach/sundried tomato!
Mincey808@reddit
Chicken, stuffing, cheese, and cranberry sauce.
BeetleJude@reddit
Brie, bacon, and onion chutney
ringosam@reddit
Late 90s when my mum first got one of them toastie presses that makes it into the big triangles. White bread and cheddar with (or without) ham or whatever you fancy. Ketchup on the side. Been thinking about those toasties for 30 years...
thecatsothermother@reddit
I believe the one we had that did that was made by Breville, so we called the toasties Brevilles, and the machine the 'Breville maker'!
katalyna78@reddit
I used to valley ours "brevilly magic" (e.g its brevilly magic time!"
Tiny_Cauliflower_618@reddit
We got one as a wedding present - it has swappable plates, so you can also make waffles. And panini. But we do that a lot less š
Large_Reindeer_7328@reddit
We still murder those toasties. Love my toastie machine, it's the only kitchen thing (ok the air fryer too) that hasn't ended up relegated to a cupboard never to be seen again once the novelty wears off.
Purp1eMagpie@reddit
Honestly just good quality ham and cheese. Throw a sauce or chutney of choice in. Though if I don't want to eat lava, sometimes I leave the sauce out and dip it instead
katalyna78@reddit
I always add tomato so it takes the edge off how rich the melted cheese can be (I prefer mature cheddar with those little crystals in it)
lynkhart@reddit
Mango chutney with melted cheese is wonderful!
potato2296@reddit (OP)
Dipping sauce is a great call
ultimateberk@reddit
I got fat on ham and cheese toasties dipped in truffle mayo. It was so moreish
Odd-Quail01@reddit

Phoenyx_wilson@reddit
Mango chutney goes well with cheese.
Spikyleaf69@reddit

PrivateFrank@reddit
Leftover roast lamb with mint jelly
Prudent-Armadillo807@reddit
Cooked streaky bacon with honey glaze, your fav cheese, on vine tomatoes cooked on bottom, fine shallots and pesto or siratcha or what you like to top it off.

We used to have a place in my home town (Chester) which had the one and only Toastie Queen and she ran a place called Meltdown. Ohhh the toasties man. The bread, the cheese, the different options. Utter filth. Miss it.
Euphoric_Rough_5245@reddit
I like to make pizza toasties so either mozzarella or Monterey Jack with pepperoni and a smidge of tomato paste.
HauntingCicada2630@reddit
Sliced banana, cinnamon and brown sugar
potato2296@reddit (OP)
Wow I hadn't even considered that I could do sweet ones definitely need to try this
Sygga@reddit
You can do thin slices of apple, too, if hot banana isn't your idea of a good time.
Possibly even cherries... I may need to dig out my toasties maker and get a can of cherry pie filling from Tesco
em_press@reddit
That is such a good idea!
cayosonia@reddit
Or chocolate/chocolate spread
Additional_Plant_539@reddit
Well buttered, and dust the outside with icing sugar

Black pudding and beans. Oh my days.
Precook the black pudding. Chop it up and mix with the beans. Basin of tea.
Peachy_Witchy_Witch@reddit
I like black pudding & hash brown
behemuffin@reddit
Seconded black pudding. I had a jar of black pudding and ale pate left over from Christmas - big slab of that and some mature cheddar, serve with tabasco sauce.Ā
Peachy_Witchy_Witch@reddit
Cream cheese, cheese, gherkin & salami.
Pineapple, tinned spaghetti, cheese and ham.
Chilli beans, cheese & egg. Hard to do without breaking the egg.

Cinnamon-Dream@reddit
Yeah, was going to suggest smoky bacon, pesto, and cream cheese! Used to be go to!
guiscardv@reddit
Or a twist, pistachio pesto, mortadella and provola (smoked mozzarella)
elchet@reddit
Mortadella is my kryptonite
CautiousAmount@reddit

Henry-Black@reddit
Just to note, provola is a separate cheese. Itās not mozzarella and itās not always smoked :)
PiskieW@reddit

nonsequitur__@reddit
Sun-dried tomatoes would go well in that too
EUskeptik@reddit

Cheddar, roasted red peppers (you can get these jarred), garlic, onion, and a bit of mustard
R0GM@reddit
Stilton and pear might not be the best, but it's nice and different if you are into it
ginfrared@reddit
I used to love scrambling an egg, adding it to my toastie bread with Cajun seasoning. Then close your bread up and it cooks the egg inside. You could add cheese and ham too. Then dip it in sweet chilli sauce š
Character-Bid-5089@reddit
I like pastrami, cheddar, opinion and English mustard.
xxxxxxxxxooxxxxxxxxx@reddit
The Aldi Christmas dinner toastie.Ā
God I miss that.Ā
qgwheurbwb1i@reddit
I've never felt so ashamed reading these comments. I read the post title and proudly thought "can't beat a bit of tuna mayo and some cheese" and then I read the wonderful concoctions that everyone else has made. Looks like I'm eating an array of toasties for tea for the next month!
Electronic-Stay-2369@reddit
Couple of years ago I had a toastie in a cafe in South Wales. It was "just" cheese and ham, but local cheese and local ham and I don't remember what type of bread but not a normal sliced anyway. It was A-mazing.
zero_glitch_cliche@reddit
Tinned Curry or egg
Deep_Banana_6521@reddit
The toastie rule is not too wet, and nothing that can slide out in one piece from the toastie.
My boyfriend told me my "roast dinner" toastie was amazing.
Basically chopped up roast chicken, chopped up stuffing, chopped up roast potatoes. Toss them in a bowl with mixed cheddar/mozzarella and make into a toastie with a gravy dip on' side.
Correct-Ad-6605@reddit
Two slices of toast,
Two squares/slices of dairylea cheese,
A full packet of 'Fries to go' (can't find them anymore now, sadly),
Fours rashers of smoked, streaky bacon, cooked so its crispy, but not completely dired out/burned,
HP sauce.
Character-Ad-3250@reddit
Jam. Cheese and kimchi.
Gornal-Annie6133@reddit
Corned beef and baked beans, absolutely delicious!
moth-on-ssri@reddit
Cheese and mushroom, but chop up the mushrooms and fry them in butter with onion and garlic.
Also mayo on the outside before toasting makes the best crust.
SM1955@reddit
Is a toastie a toasted sandwich? Or a panino? Or more like a pasty?
glasgowgeg@reddit
A toastie in my opinion is just bread and cheese. If it has fillings, it's a panini.
glasgowgeg@reddit
Toasties are just bread and cheese, if it has fillings it's a panini.
Best panini I'll say was the Firewalker Deluxe you used to get at Where the Monkey Sleeps in Glasgow, it was turkey, mature cheddar, sundried tomato, red onion, chillies, lemon juice, bacon, hot sauce, and cayenne pepper.
Purple_Committee_216@reddit
Red Leicester and apple.
jmabbz@reddit
3 cheese, garlic granuals, spring onions and lea n perrins sauce.
KellyMelany@reddit
You can't go wrong with the classic 'fridge raid,' but if you want to actually impress him, try Brie, bacon, and cranberry sauce. It's like Christmas in a crust, minus the awkward family arguments. Just warn him that the middle will be hotter than the surface of the sunāI once took a bite of a tuna melt too early and I'm pretty sure I lost my sense of taste for a week. There's a fine line between a delicious birthday tea and a medical emergncyāI mean emergency.
--BMO--@reddit
My grandparents used to run pubs, they had one around the corner from my school in the 90ās, 2/3 days a week my gran would pick me up from school and weād go straight there for her to open up.
She used to make me a corned beef and onion toastie for tea in the old knackered press out the back, best thing in the world. Then Iād play pool until my dad came to pick me up after work.
I never really got on with my dads side of the family growing up but thatās a nice memory Iāve not thought about in a while, thank you.
buy_me_a_pint@reddit
I am pretty boring, and just go with a cheese and ham toastie
Funky_monkey2026@reddit
Halloumi and tomato. Might be biased as I'm Cypriot.

miemcc@reddit
Just plain old cheddar and ham. If I want to fancy it up. I'll do that on the plate.
Time-Cucumber3961@reddit
Mature cheddar, lime pickle and crispy onions.
cayosonia@reddit
Banana a chocolate or Nutella is a surprising twist on a toastie
PKblaze@reddit
My gf makes great ones.
Cheddar, red onion, seasoned Quorn Fillet (Sub for chicken) red pepper, some chopped green olives, sour cream and chive and then some greens (like lettuce) popped in at the end.
syorks73@reddit
Ham salami cheese, and raspberry seedless jam. The sweetness of the jam compliments the savoury. No different to cranberry sauce with turkey tbh.
whodunnit20@reddit
My favourite is cheese, ham and baked beans.
secretrebel@reddit
Fig jam and blue cheese

Extra strong cheddar and chilli jam is a winner. Extra strong cheddar with basically anything actually!
Some great suggestions in this thread, Iād do a spread of all of them! Or maybe more of a conveyer belt so they all arrive hot?
Tinkerbellfell@reddit
I am obsessed with truffle Cheese toasties.
You take Jasonās ciabattin, grate some of your favourite cheese (i use snowdonia truffle cheese), then slather on some truffle pesto (filippo berio truffle pesto is the best one hands down). Itās too good!!

Extra mature cheddar and Branston small pickle, lightly buttered on the outside, is my go-to. The hot vinegariness of the Branston complements the cheddar even more deliciously than when cold in a sandwich.
goosiegander@reddit
A white toastie with brown toast as filling would be a surprise.

Stilton and gherkins, mostly diced but some left whole for crunch.

A simple cheese and bean, though ensure you leave it for 4-5 business days or the molten bean juice will destroy your mouth. Use a chilli cheese like mexicana or a flavoured cheddar to mix it up a little.
Iām ready for the downvotes, but I sometimes buy a cheapo tin of spaghetti Bolognese and have some of that and mozzarella in a toasty, itās heavenly.
Maus_Sveti@reddit
Tinned spaghetti in a toasted sandwich is a kiwi classic. Mostly just a tomato sauce like you have with beans rather than a bolognaise sauce though. Bonus points if you can get the sort that comes with little mystery meat sausages (donāt know if you have that in the UK).
CraigTheBrewer12@reddit
Ohh I think you can spaghetti with mystery meat sausages here, though beans and sausages are more popular. Ohh Iām craving a toastie now
vikingneil81@reddit
Cheese and peanut butter....trust me
tearfulconfetti@reddit
I make mine in a frying pan and one of my best creations are:
- Garlic butter on the outside and grated mozz on the inside + grindy garlic
- tomato puree with seasonings, grated mozz, pepperoni (always butter the outside of any toasties i list btw)
- cheese and honestly a burger patty with onions and ketchup
- one i havent made but wish I had before I went gluten free, chilli with nacho sauce, cheese, guac, sour cream just a LOADED mexi mess. That would be good with garlic butter on the outside too i reckon

When I was a student hanging with friends at the pool club there was a good looking bar maid that would make cheese toasties for like Ā£2. Public-Entrance8816@reddit
As much as I love a fancy toastie with interesting, fancy and flavourful ingredients, the mention of toasties unlocks the memory very close to my heart, clogging my arteries with love.
Cheap white thick sliced bread Proper butter on the outside (probably the inside too) Cheddar cheese (sold in corner shops now as "light cheese type substance")
It was the maiden voyage of the triangle toastie maker my nana won at the bingo in 1992. It was like a fried bread, greasy, cheesy heart attack. Eaten in front of a coal fire on a cold December afternoon after a swimming lesson with a cup of tea. I burned my chin on the molten cheese but I was too deep in food nirvana to care.
I inherited that bad boy and still have it. The only thing that stops me making them regularly is increased education on healthy eating, and it being a right bastard to clean.
If you want such a delightful beast for a birthday celebration, I understand that some of the classier, upmarket pubs have a breville out back.
Jezbod@reddit
I must say that I prefer the more mature cheeses when putting in to a toastie maker.

Marinate some cherry tomatoes in olive oil with salt and pepper Toast or fry sourdough in butter. Squeeze the garlic on to the bread. Sliced cheddar, left over roast meat (turkey/chicken/ham/etc), squashed roast potatoes, squashed left over roast veg (carrots/parsnips/brussrls/etc), any sides (stuffing/cranberry sauce/apple sauce/etc), slice of prosciutto, slice of Camembert, drizzle of gravy 3. I would make that by serving some good quality croque monsieur, and the Bolognese on the side for everyone to serve themselves. It has to be a really good Bolognese though, with bacon lardons, properly broken down mince etc.

Hear me out, this is the best transition from savoury to sweet. This is an Arab combination we had for dessert before chocolate became so widespread and is quite light.
It shoukd be a soft spreadable soft white cheese (at home we use Puck cheese or KIRI). UK equivalents are Philadelphia cheese, or cheese triangles (dairy lea or laughing cow).
A chocolate and marshmallow options is banging as well.

I make this filling sometimes and spread it on tortilla wraps, fold it up and brown in a dry frying pan. The tortilla goes crispy, the honey and cheese are hot and sweet and slightly salty. It is an amazing combination! Great suggestion!

If you can find it then Portuguese tomato jam united with a good cheddar is magical. On its own the jam is very odd as it is sweet and tomatoey. However when the sweetness collides with the savoury of the cheese then the angels cry.
