4 Car Garage, one from each category: FWD, RWD, AWD, 4x4?

Gatesy840@reddit

Ill keep my diesel Ranger for the 4x4/tow car Mini jcw countryman for the AWD ev runabout (looking at buying one atm) Keep my 10' Rolla for fwd For rwd i wouldn't mind that supra i signed off a few days ago with 380rwkw. Was a lot of fun and I almost binned it when I lost traction at 80kph from stabbing the throttle....

theoretically, would it be possible to change my car from an automatic to manual transmission?

Posted by h0tsalad@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 64 comments

Gatesy840@reddit

We used to do it with falcons and commodores all the time as young blokes. But it was easier 20-30 years ago.. Was the young revheads car of choice, the manuals would always end up around a tree... Now its really hard to find any factory manuals, most of them are probably layed up in a shed as collectables

OK - what is the difference between E85, UNL88 and Regular? I just wanna fill up my Honda.

We Europeans know the emergency number 911 because we have watched Shatner's "Rescue 911" as a kid (+ all American movies and series), but do Americans know commonly what is the emergency number in Europe?

Are cars assembled in Japan by the same manufacturer still better than, say, the same model built in Mexico?

Posted by Fleedom2025@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 130 comments

Gatesy840@reddit

We used to get Japanese built Klugas (highlanders) Now they are built in Indiana and I have noticed a lower build quality. I think it's more to do with the suppliers than manufacturers... I have a dash out of one as we speak, brand new. The HVAC box is cracked and leaking AC condensation into the driver's floor well... We also had a run of weather strips failing and filling up the front doors.. These are caught, and fixed.. after that I can't tell the difference, so it's not so much assembly of the vehicle..

What's the longest you've ever been without an oil change mileage wise? And make/ model/ year for reference

Tolerances change as an engine warms, when cold the engine is also running rich (injecting more fuel) to speed up the warming of catalytic converters Running rich, plus ring tolerances on the cold side will cause small amounts of fuel to enter the oil. Not a problem unless it's all the time

How come people travel the world in 40 year old vans with 100k miles and no issues, but then if you buy a new, normal vehicle you're told "oh no, don't buy that one, they're not reliable, they come with a bunch of issues or they will be in the shop often"?

This is why I'm adamant about going remote bush alone these days... I've been a mechanic for almost 20 years, but my common rail diesel is too complicated for bush repairs... So it's two cars or we don't go. These days I cannot be stuck because of my child... when I was younger and alone? Just send it!

Posted by CheddarFlex@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 3 comments

Gatesy840@reddit

Most if not all would've been converted by now R12 is a restricted gas where I live, very illegal to sell or buy. I know the US is much more lax on this but still check local laws

Gatesy840@reddit

Recalls can be different region to region. The dealers in Norway may not be able to claim the recall to get paid by lexus if it's not active in Norway... Call corporate, explain your situation. They should be able to sort it out if it's a safety recall

Gatesy840@reddit

Both of those were USDM issues too They are generally solid cars. But I don't beleive in their service schedules. Too long, that's why they generally die after 10 years. Just bought a stonic, and with 3.5L of oil they reckon it can go 15k km? (9300 miles) They are asking a lot from such little oil, so we will service it every 10k km (6k miles)

How to prepare for 150 mile trip?

There are different valve connections for different refrigerant. R134a was used for a long time and is the most common. Most R12 systems would have been converted and only now are we seeing a slow move to R1234yf

I imagine by "operating system" the mechanic means can wires are chewed, sometimes not repairable due to relying on specific resistances. If English is the first language here I would be finding another mechanic, if English is a second language I assume it's lost in translation

WHY isn't Traction Control *OFF* by default?

Posted by l008com@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 28 comments

Gatesy840@reddit

Yes "sway control" or Electronic Stability Control. TC is still kicking in if ESC is currently active. TC is part of the ESC system along with the ABS. This is why you won't find a car with ESC and without TC and why it's on by default.

The licencing is interesting In my state of Australia the same is true but only for your first year of driving. Apparently after 12 months people magically learn how to use a clutch lol

5 cylinder engines seem pretty interesting, would it be a difficult task for a stock car engine manufacture to engineer a design given they're use to V8s or V10s?

Gatesy840@reddit

Not sure about elsewhere but in Australia it's law that manufactures must supply parts for 10 years. When our local manufacturing ended of the Ford Falcon the Geelong plant was pumping out spare parts after they stopped making them until the government was satisfied it was 10 years worth of spares

This is why you should need to be licensed for AC. People have no idea what they are doing and it's terrible gas for the environment. R1234yf is better but still bad. Atleast we don't use r12 still I guess
