I do this but I cut the salmon and avocado a bit smaller and sprinkle it with nori flakes and toasted sesame seeds. It's delicious.

How many times a year do you “call sick” at work?

Posted by Aggravating-Fig-9274@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1524 comments

Eyfura@reddit

I'm chronically ill and WFH so I am both off sick more than most but less than I would be if I was in-person. I still average 5-7 times a year though a couple of these will generally be hospital visits.

What are some “posh” soft drinks that I could buy to have at home?

How much bread or bread products do you typically eat?

Posted by PopperDilly@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 58 comments

Eyfura@reddit

I mostly eat rice and potatoes now. Sometimes I be aje my own or buy a nicer loaf if I'm craving toast but otherwise I just don't eat bread anymore.

What do you think about illegal drugs being normalised in society?

Posted by AlucardVTep3s@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 345 comments

Eyfura@reddit

I know a lot of people on prescription both with the NHS and private (chronic illness things). Unless someone is actually smoking it in front of me I make no assumptions about whether they are legally allowed it. (Prescriptions require vaping or ingestion only).

What’s something that you probably shouldn’t joke about but you do anyway cause it’s a good coping mechanism?

Posted by iffyClyro@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 144 comments

Eyfura@reddit

I have to explain to my doctors constantly that my dark humour about my chronic illnesses is part of what's keeping me alive. The good ones joke along with me.

Has anyone else been offered crazy NHS appointments?

My GP will accommodate where they can but the hospitals have limited resources. We get what's next available and if the facility is in a hospital you can get bumped for emergencies so it's already a scheduling nightmare.

What makes you feel lucky to live in the UK?

Eyfura@reddit

The difference is I'm not worried the guy who's acting weird on the underground might have one. I'm not listening to them pop off at the nightclub up the road from my flat at least once a month (lived in Los Angeles for some time). I'm not worried my kid might not come home from school. There was a moment about two years after I moved away from the US where I was sitting on a bus and realised I felt weirdly calm and it was because I wasn't as worried about being out in public. There was a low grade almost unnoticed extra alertness that I carried there that just doesn't need to exist here. I still react to backfires that are particularly convincing, which my partner finds amusing. I think it's wild how everyone is just okay with that tension cause it's just part of life there. Not in response to your comment but to the thread in general: the NHS is amazing. It's got shortfalls and bad people, sure, and we should always strive to be better, but the quality and accessibility of care is exceptional.

If Brits are known for their good manners, why are British subreddits so full of rudeness?

I've lived in the south for over a decade now and this is what I tell my husband (a southerner) all the time. The politeness is all fake.

In your view, what’s the etiquette for being signed off of work?

Both of those being low can lead to anxiety. While I've had the same results and am in that rabbit hole now my GP at least gave me B vitamins for three months then retested me..

What is the cheapest Online Food shopping?

Posted by cloudyextraswan@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 44 comments

Eyfura@reddit

Ocado is the best by far if you can get it. Never any subs and you can sometimes get deals on m&S things. I rage quit Asda cause of how bad thier subs are, Tesco and Sainsbury's are the most expensive at the moment and their delivery is subpar.  We do an Iceland order every few months to stock up on frozen bits as they deliver and I like to have frozen chicken and stuff in for when I'm struggling to cook on a low spoon day.

People who've worked in food jobs - did it change what you eat?

Posted by luvbulge@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 127 comments

The problem is also, I ask and they point to the brownie which is sitting open and unwrapped right next to everything else. As a coeliac at that point I've lost all faith in their ability to deal with CC and I'm not ordering anything.

How may of you are addicted to scratch cards? Are there even any winnings?

Posted by Disastrous_Alarm_719@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 76 comments

Eyfura@reddit

I will buy one every few months when I feel like it. I generally win a free ticket or a couple quid. Every now and then I win a tenner. I think I buy 4-5 a year.

Is anyone finding take aways or eating out far too expensive?

Posted by Desperate-Drawer-572@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 243 comments

Eyfura@reddit

I have a couple select local family run restaurants that are good quality that are for special occasion eating out. As for the fast food chains, the quality has dropped and the prices are insane. It's not worth using what little discretionary fund I've got on it as I always just feel disappointed and like I wasted money.

Is healthy eating in the UK basically inaccessible if you’re poor, disabled, and exhausted?

Posted by Opposite_Position125@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 476 comments

I make a quick side with frozen spinach blocks and mash (frozen or packet). Whack it in the microwave, add seasoning stir it up together and you have a lovely side dish. Iceland has more frozen healthy things than you might think and they deliver! Things like cooked chicken and other protein, frozen vegetables (which often have more nutrients than fresh). Microwave veg with a bit of butter and seasoning, chicken in the air fryer.. lovely supper. Frozen things also don't go bad on those low spoon days when even that's hard. Probably mentioned here but worth saying again start with a pot noodle and add the above- veg and protein and even a boiled egg if you're feeling super fancy that day.. proper ramen is a nutritious meal. My fav is cooked frozen shrimp and mixed veg added to a spicy shrimp noodle pot. Feels lux, gets my veg in, and is reasonable (watch sodium with this one though it's not for everyday).

Ladies of the UK, do you use Period Underwear?

Posted by Competitive-Fact-820@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 436 comments

Eyfura@reddit

I found the horizontal seam in the back on m&S ones is what made it uncomfortable for me. Gave it that nappy feeling, was constantly aware its not just underwear. Might as well wear a pad at that point.

They are using whole wheat flour so I hope there is no coeliac. I've definitely made some gf loafs that came out like this when first starting out though lol.

It's so down to who you get. The previous place we lived a parcel literally got thrown into a hedge (she had some serious anger issues and would often scream at people in my building for not responding fast enough). Where we live now he's been with Evri/Hermes for ten years and is amazing. So if the parcel gets to him we're all good. Now my problem with Evri is the parcels vanishing before that point.

How often do you stop to ‘let people go’ when driving?

Posted by tangles3@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 233 comments

My favourite thing is when people try to let me go,it's obviously not safe at all so I don't go and then they get angry. Im not going to do something dangerous just because you wanted to be "nice".

Is £405 for 6 months of water too much?

Posted by Ready-Ad6652@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 29 comments

Eyfura@reddit

All of the water companies have hiked their rates up. If you're lucky like me, Southern Water has the highest rate hike at 7.8%. Though some others are as high at 10%. As these companies are local monopolies and as mentioned elsewhere we need water to live so we're a bit stuck. The suggestion to not pay your bill is a terrible one, as that will end up on your credit.

My son's homework is pretty reasonable even in year 10 but the Art GCSE workload is still insane to the point where he was complaining about not being able to hang out with a mate who is taking Art.

It's a post code lottery. We live between two hospitals and the difference depending on which one I get referred to is insane. Unfortunately the A&E at the good one is starting to get battered cause they are closing the A&E at the bad one. My previous GP surgery was shocking, I was ill for years. We moved and my new surgery is incredible and I was diagnosed on my first visit. My old GP still hasn't managed to forward/upload my records properly 5 years later.

How much effort (realistically) do you actually put in at work?

Posted by blaikalva@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 524 comments

Eyfura@reddit

Mine is the opposite though I'm only in the office a few days a month. My office days are frustrating and I get way less work done. Open plan and constant distractions means my productivity is shocking in the office. Especially with that one coworker who literally never stops talking. Ever. I'm the kind of autistic who gets a lot of satisfaction out of a job well done and I work really hard from home. My partner thinks I'm mildly insane sometimes but I'm either off or on unfortunately.

To the parents out there, what age did you start leaving your kids at home while you nipped shop for 10/15 minutes?

Posted by Puzzled-Quail2076@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 433 comments

It really depends on the child. Mine I left at home from about 10-11 for very short stints, his friend on the other hand was an absolute terror and could be barely trusted alone in a room 😂

They may be able to give you a blanket and pillow. I was stuck like this once waiting for a bed and they gave me a couple hospital blankets to get by. Find a wall outlet if possible to charge things and camp out. It's tough but you can do this. Hope a bed frees up soon !

I've introduced them to my workplace. (Still technically American but I've been here for some time). I organised a few with themes for office events and people love it. Our best one was "bring something that reminds you of home" as we're a very multicultural group and I was introduced to the Nigerian Vs Ghanian jallof rice debate.
