We all volunteered at a heritage railway. It was class, spend a day hacking down saplings on a railway embankment a chucking felled trees through a wood chipper. Railway treated us to private dinner that night as thanks.

The rise of Champions League and the financial dominance of the Premier League meant people started caring less and less about the FA Cup as victory came with no real significance. As soon as teams started routinely fielding a second string side it was basically curtains for the comp.

Defaulting straight to ADHD and or Autism as an excuse for poor behaviour shouldn't be acceptable. Lots of people who have the conditions are perfectly well behaved and vice versa. Exceptions of course for the obvious circumstances.

Why are there so many diesel trains in the UK?

Posted by PodcastListener1234@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 224 comments

EverythingIsByDesign@reddit

Yes, that is correct. Discontinuous saves quite a lot in civils interventions. 3kV DC does require smaller clearances but comes with it's own issues. As your power losses are proportional to the square of the current then cutting the voltages drive up the losses, and the voltage drop mean more frequent feeding. Same reason we moved away from Third Rail in the UK.

Hello, I am a railway electrification engineer. In the United Kingdom our loading guage is far smaller than other areas of the world. Most of our railways were built by Victorians for mineral (and other freight traffic) which given the characteristics didn't need a large gauge. So we built narrow tunnels, low bridges, tight radius curves. This legacy makes electrification incredibly expensive. The UK using 25,000V overhead line, which requires quite large electrical clearances between the body of the train and the OLE, and the OLE and the bridge. Great Western Electrification ran massive over-budget because they demolished virtually every bridge between London of Cardiff, lowered track through Victorian tunnels, remodelled listed stations to accommodate OLE. There are definitely ways to make electrification cheaper. We have a massive obsession with completely over engineering the OLE and they've trailed "discontinuous electrification" in South Wales, which is steps in the right direction, but there is still lots to do.

Recruiters will not disclose salary band now?

Boils my piss. Our company policy is no salaries on adverts. I 'm trying to recruit a reasonably large number of roles in a pretty specialist field. Further still it's a fixed salary. I sifted through dozens of CVs during the last round of recruitment only for most of them told me they weren't interested at that salary. Absolute fucking waste of both our times...

"Troll" They bastardized the definition to refine only bullying and harassment as "Trolling". Its always peeved me because trolling was harmless internet fun, the media context dimishes the severity of the things people are doing online. Sending someone death threats is not trolling it's a serious crime.

EverythingIsByDesign@reddit

I watched a very interesting video the other day on those barrierless drop off points. Apparently the contract is between the driver and the Airport/Enforcement Agency, however they have no way of verifying the driver's identity without being told by the "registered keeper", similar to a NIP you get from the Police. So if the registered keeper just refuses to tell the parking enforcement who was driving then they have legal recourse to seek payment if you drive off without paying.

In the UK, probably 2-3 years ago. We went to some live music in Swansea and then when the band finished went to a club. It was (obviously) comparatively soulless. But I went to a club in Prague on a stag do and Nervo were DJing. And honestly despite drinks and admission costing a fortune it was class.

Anyone left a good paying job for one earning less money, how did it work out?

Posted by Doomergeneration@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 117 comments

EverythingIsByDesign@reddit

Yes. I used to work for Network Rail, the pay was good but frankly it was an awful company to work for. It's not a surprise the railway is in the mess it is in, because if you're an employee that cared they'd mentally break you. Anyway after I decided I had enough I decided to join the supply chain as a design engineer. Best decision I ever made.

About to spend over £10k on a honeymoon - what is the best credit card option to use for airmiles?

Posted by lukeaustin24@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 6 comments

EverythingIsByDesign@reddit

Depends who you want air miles with and who you're booking with. * An Amex Gold Preferred Rewards will give you points that can be converted into a few different schemes. There is also a new joiners offer on for this card. * If you're spending with British Airways then the BA Premium Amex can pay 3 Avios per £1 * Barclaycard do a similar Avios card. They currently have a new joiners offer if you don't have a Barclaycard. Spending £10k would give you circa 57,000 Avios points.

Gin drinkers of the UK, can you help?

Posted by JustEnoughEducation@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 216 comments

EverythingIsByDesign@reddit

I went to a "Gin Festival" in the early days of the gin revival and there was a session of tastings and masterclasses, me and my now wife sat through a few and last up was Dodds. Anyway everyone else just got up and left. Bloke cones in from Dodds and it's the two of us and we tell him he doesn't have to do it if he wants to get off. But he insists and gives us very detailed and insightful private talk on their gin. Anyway I went straight out and bought a bottle and it's banging, proper strong, traditional tasting botanical gin. Anyway I'd recommend Dodds.

Railway Maintenance/Asset Engineer; Project Managers. Also project managers being enabled by Idiot third party clients and morons masquerading as engineers ignoring standards, the maintainers and thinking they'll just transfer all the liabilities to the maintenance organisation. My job should be worrying about assets that are 30 years plus, but all my attention is on stuff that is either a few months old or just being built.

Why does it take so long to build big projects and infrastructure?

Posted by 531-AT@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 33 comments

EverythingIsByDesign@reddit

I had to get a railway arch rewired so a new tenant can move in. It has dragged on because nobody can tell me: 1. Who is paying? 2. What the actual scope of the rewire is? 3. How it's being delivered? Three was answered eventually when my department had to go and get three quotes, spend hours of people's times and effort getting quotes from supplier we didn't want to use for quality reasons, for a £5k rewire. I'm also in a similar position trying to get chargers installed. Company wants an all electric fleet from November, but right now we have two chargers (powered by a diesel generator).

If the government was delivering effectively on projects would we know about it?

When I worked for Network Rail, the run of the mill, boring renewals often went off without a hitch. The projects that fell apart and became newsworthy were normally the big efforts like Great Western Electrification, [insert name here] station redevelopment, or things like Gypsy Patch lane. Usually because of about 3 reasons: 1. The funding was usually external and came with significant political interest or pressure or with a keen interest in cutting corners. This often meant being seen to be doing something was more important than doing the right thing, or taking on "risk" without quantifying it or have a strategy in place in case the risk is realised. 2. The massive surge in workload meant jobs are flooded with consultants and contractors who vary along of spectrum of competent opportunists, to chancers to the downright unethical/incompetent. 3. More often than not they don't give a shit about the BAU teams that are trying to maintain what was there already and will have to deal with what is left behind. Which causes friction, delay, and eventually rework or a legacy of problems.
