People who are really good at interviews, what's your secret sauce?

Posted by SweetCoconut2757@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 255 comments

Electronic-Air2035@reddit

Having sat on both sides (they were very short staffed the day they chose me to sit in the interview panel believe me πŸ˜‚) a lot of it goes on vibes honestly. Walk in there - not cocky or full of bravado but also with your head held high smiling like your meeting some old friends for a quick catch up. And proceed to act friendly throughout, it is really hard to not act nervous and honestly I think what helps me is I tend to get a bit giggly and daft when I'm nervous and it's always worked in my favour. Try to have at least a good idea of what questions you will be asked (there are plenty of examples online) and find out a bit about the role/company beforehand but don't act like a know it all. Also, make your application to the job sound as professional as possible but don't elaborate on things you aren't confident discussing in person. I'll tell you this though, lots of places already have someone in mind before the interview especially if it's somewhere that has an internal application process like schools/council/civil service etc so don't be too disheartened if you don't get shortlisted as they have to take AT LEAST the same amount of public interviewees as they have internal even if they have no intention of hiring you.

I heard my next door neighbours friend properly ripping into one of their kids (about 3-4) and the poor baby was hysterical, after a spate of banging on the wall I went round myself and asked her if she liked frightening/smacking little kids? I told her she'd be getting a smack in the face if she carried on (I honestly don't know what got into me but I was often on the receiving end of such things as a kid and NOBODY ever called it out) She gave me a mouthful but couldn't really justify her argument, the neighbour said nothing but did give her a talking to after I marched off. They stopped being friends shortly after I think my neighbour realised what a mess she was I don't know.

Accidentally hurt my child feel terrible and worried what will happen if it gets reported?

Electronic-Air2035@reddit

I'm sorry that happened to you genuinely. However, I am part of safeguarding and mental health team in the school where I work and I would take mum's explanation as a valid explanation and would log it as such, if there was no explanation I would speak to the student and then mum to see if the stories matched up and then log it depending on what the outcome was. Most injuries on children have a valid reason in the end it's only really finger marks/bruises from being hit and inflicted with objects that cause alarm bells to ring and even then it's a minefield trying to get anything in place especially without disclosure from the child.

That's nonsense, if school see it and don't know what's happened, they will be asking him and then probably mum will get a phone call if its unexplained that's where the duty of care comes in and his version of events might be skewed. If mum provides a reasonable explanation - which she has, they won't give it a second thought, especially if he has frequent outbursts at home and school.

I'd explain to the school what happened on Monday, explain that he was being extremely physical/violent to you and his siblings and that he has been throwing stuff about and you've had to restrain him which unfortunately has resulted in a minor injury. They should understand if they know him.

Is vaping really considered 'giving up smoking'?

Posted by chupamina@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 673 comments

Electronic-Air2035@reddit

I was a heavy smoker for many years and it was started to seriously affect my health. I was always out of breath, wheezing and everytime I got a cold, I got a chest infection that often required antibiotics/treatment Since I've switched to vapes I no longer have any of these issues. Plus I don't stink like an ashtray anymore. However I'm under no illusion that my lungs are still getting a dose of something it shouldn't multiple times a day and I am as much addicted to nicotine as ever. I am concerned that more young people now this smoking is cool again and if I was their age vaping would seem like the ultimate cool kid accessory.

However, I have had the exact same issue in the past as you at the top half of my legs which put me off going swimming and I understand that you may feel self conscious of this... Posted by Pinecone_Porcupine@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 189 comments

In the week if I'm at work I'll have 1 cup of tea in the morning one at lunch if I'm lucky to have time (I work in a school and hot drinks + kids isn't doable sometimes) then maybe 2-3 cups when I get home. At weekends or on my day off I can happily drink tea all day long so anywhere between 5 - 8 cups a day, if I'm feeling under the weather this can be more.

It was my stepdads funeral, he loved Pink Floyd in a big way and the coffin came in to great gig in the sky, a pretty harrowing song at the best of times (I'm not a pink Floyd fan) it was a bit of a blur as I was kind of dragging my mum down the 'aisle' as she was bereft and kept saying 'I can't do this, i'll just run off, let me go' understandably so, the funeral was fine, the wake was... Lively, my stepdad was only 53 and was well loved in the local music scene so had a lot of friends and aquantainces because of this. After I got my mum home and settled I went home and was sitting on my kitchen floor pretty emotionally exhausted with my husband, to whom I remarked 'do you know what...... I fucking hate pink Floyd I do' The radio that was playing quietly in the background suddenly went oddly silent and then... I shit you not - 'wish you were here' started playing out of nowhere!!! I didn't know whether to laugh or cry πŸ˜‚

My shoe rack/coat rack is by the front door and I have 2 teenage girls who live in battered trainers, I spray it down daily with a general disinfectant spray (I like the purple zoflora spray) and sometimes a quick dash of air freshener, you don't need to soak them mind as it can perish the shoes. I specifically chose my youngests school for this reason too, the old head had a PhD in art and design and the school had an allotment/pond/chickens etc and once a term they had messy day where they came in old clothes and made art like chucking paint up the wall and hand prints, it was the furthest in the catchment but totally worth it. Tbf with the parents where I work it's 50/50 but guess which half are the most vocal about their feelings on their kids coming home muddy and painty?

I work in a school and I have really reign myself in sometimes as I see no issue with them getting wet/muddy, digging around for bugs or climbing and falling (obviously not from a great height) but the issue is the parents, we got in trouble for letting some of them collect slugs and snails and making them a habitat as the parents said it would give them lung worm, they weren't eating them ffs! 😩

Should partners go to bed at the same time?

Electronic-Air2035@reddit

My husband has always gone to bed early, as an insomniac and an insecure 20 something year old it used to drive me crazy in the very early days. The I realised why does it matter? He needs his beauty sleep and I enjoy pottering about and doing bits and bobs into the early hours so he'd become very bored/irritated by my little fidgety brain not sitting still for more than 10-20 minutes at a time waiting to go to bed anyways. Unless it's for other bedtime things, which you both need to be vocal about if you're scared of missing out 😝 After 15 years or so together communicating this I'd not an issue. Everyone's body clock and the amount of sleep needed is different and that's fine. I've tried going to bed early, I toss and turn and ruminate until when I'd usually sleep anyway and wake up more tired anyways. Your bf and your mum are control freaks, you're a grown ass girly, you tell them when your bedtime is.

The fact that your asking already tells me they're going to be on track. I'm guessing they can sit and listen to a story for a short period of time? use the toilet and wipe themselves? It's all tolerable until it hits your chest honestly, then it's hell on earth and I can never seem to shake the cough, for weeks any little thing will set me off. 20 odd years of smoking will do that though. I quit 18 months ago as I had a coughing fit in the middle of the night that nearly finished me off. Face turned purple and I was coughing up blood because I Couldnt breathe 😩 Still hits my chest when I get a cold but not like that thank fuck. Don't start smoking kids, it's no fun.

What emergency service do you ask for if you need more than one?

Posted by tom-goddamn-bombadil@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 248 comments

Electronic-Air2035@reddit

You can say 'probably both' like ambulance and police with for instance a road collision, but I would guess in a mega crisis you just say 'I need x now PLEASE...' and they would start logging details to send a first response of any of them, then usually the operator can decipher who needs sending where from the information given, like a sudden death would be ambulance from the get go and they might dispatch a police car or two if they feel it's worthy.

My eldest is 21 and none of her circle takes anything which surprises me (she'd tell me if they did I've always been very open minded with her) I think the kids who always have, always will... But many don't. The ones that do however have more means to access a wider range of drugs, whereas when I was that age.... You had to kind of seek out a certain type of person and sort of get what you get and hope for the best.... For instance if you wanted weed, you might get soap bar... You might get some brick weed shite and you just had to have it, you wanted pills (E) you might get lucky... You might have to settle for some dirty yellow speed. Coke was almost unheard of and v expensive. Now kids who are of that mindset now have 24 hour access on Snapchat etc of multiple dealers selling multiple products with stuff for all price ranges which 15/20 years ago just wouldn't happen.
