What things are you embarrassed to like?

I had the band Scooter on shuffle earlier and really liked them. What embarrassing things do you like?
Imbackbiach@reddit
As long as the things you like don't hurt or get shoved in others’ faces, then you shouldn't be embarrassed to like the things you like, even if it may be viewed as embarrassing.
Internal_Cow427@reddit
Films from the 80’s
For example I watched over the Easter weekend
Real Genius Weird science Top Gun
pumpkingutsgalore@reddit
I dont believe you should be embarrassed for liking thungs but here are some of my guilty pleasures:
Girls Aloud Sugarbabes Spice Girls (not even guilty tbh) N-Dubz
kebabby72@reddit
After we were students, we still lived in a house with 8 lads and we had full size cardboard cutouts of all the spice girls in our pool room. We called them our groupies. And we used to play their album full blast! We were all ravers as well.
EyeAware3519@reddit
I almost exclusively listen to happy hardcore and jump up jungle/drum n bass and have done since the 90s. Even I think Scooter are shit though 😆.
I wouldn't say I am embarrassed to listen to it but whenever people I don't really know start talking about music I just keep quiet.
kebabby72@reddit
We had a mate who hated dance music but we convinced him to go to Tribal Gathering with us one year. We lost him for hours and he was found off his nut raving in the happy hardcore tent with about 20 glow sticks.
russtafarri@reddit
DJ Slipmatt's World of Rave is saved in my car. The windows go down. I'm 50 and DGAF.
EyeAware3519@reddit
That's on the more tame side though. I've been recently getting into Nort East Makina. Driving around the south of England with some 30 year old Spanish Techno accompanied by a Geordie MC blasting out the car gets some funny looks. Fuck em though.
russtafarri@reddit
So no Jeff Mills and Dave Clarke? 🤣
EyeAware3519@reddit
If Dave Clarke is the real name of DJ Clarkee then maybe. Otherwise no.
(I know it's Richard)
russtafarri@reddit
Dave Clarke - the baron of techno according to John Peel. I know Clarkee, I still have a tape of his from 1994.
EyeAware3519@reddit
Oh that Dave Clarke. Not the one from the 60s. Yeah, not really my cuppa, reminds me of being in the chill out room of Lakota not feeling too well.

early 00s landfill indie. best part about it is all those bands are doing cheap festivals every year these days so i can see four or five in a day for £70
BraveLordWilloughby@reddit
Landfill indie?
Odd-Paramedic-3826@reddit
the wombats, the cooks, the fratellis, the kaiser cheifs, basically every band that kind of followed in the wake of the strokes and franz ferdinand
Scared-One9295@reddit
The only thing that I, a 40 year old British man, am hesitant to share with people I don't know very well is that I'm obsessed with J-pop at the moment (have been for about four years). Just the music, mind, and I actually think most of it is shit but there are a few that are now among my all-time favourite groups (I hesitate to call them musicians, tbh, because some of them really aren't) and I can't stop listening to them.
BraveLordWilloughby@reddit
Les Miserables, the film (I'm a 30 year-old man, am ex-junky, and agricultural mechanic by trade)
Also this one Polish woman in YT who makes Edwardian clothing (Same justification as above)
Tight-Principle-743@reddit
Angel Delight - my wife looks at me with such disgust when I eat it. (Like she’s not American, the country with spray cheese!).
Jonathans_8@reddit
Any examples of classical crossover music?
Tight-Principle-743@reddit
I’d recommend anything from Lindsey Stirling - the best is from the album Artemis, in my view.
mynaneisjustguy@reddit
I want to judge because it's such trash but I listen to what I like and many people probably consider it absolutely wank so, you go on right ahead.
ImpressiveStorm8914@reddit
I don’t like Angel Delight but in a similar ballpark to you is that I love Iced Gems.

Horlicks.
I mean tea, coffee, juice, energy drinks, coke, beer - all get drunk down at a moderate pace.
But a large mug of Horlicks goes down in one go and then Im looking for another one. And then another.

Mother-Palpitation43@reddit
The masked singer. Not massively embarrassed by it, but I don’t tell people that I like it.
ginfrared@reddit
Wrestling. Apparently. I get ripped for it lol

Yep!! Had this many times. Damn, I didn’t know it was scripted 🤣

Gaming is a completely normal thing now. But as a 40 year old man I expect people to judge me for being a gamer
Monsterofthelough@reddit
Computer gaming or tabletop? The former is completely de stigmatised by now, the latter not as much.
pajamakitten@reddit
Depends. Board games are huge these days, at least amongst millennials and younger people, Warhammer and TCGs still have some stigma (not helped by the hygiene of some players).
Monsterofthelough@reddit
Yeah, I’m mostly a TTRPG player (and sometimes play board games or skirmish wargames) and TTRPGs are a lot less stigmatised than they were in the 90s, but you still have the problem that they’re hard to understand if you haven’t played them. My impression is that these days no one would look down on a 40 year old man who played computer games, unless it was in conjunction with something else (like being a virgin in mum’s basement, or a useless dad).
Justboy__@reddit
Nah it’s totally mainstream now, it’s a huge industry!
astro-squidge@reddit
Try being a 40 year old mum of two. 😀
Faltarsia@reddit
Some people might, but they probably wouldn't understand. Around 10 years ago in my mid teens, I'd be gaming with people double, even triple my age
Faltarsia@reddit
Some people might, but they probably wouldn't understand. Around 10 years ago in my mid teens, I'd be gaming with people double, even triple my age
EyeAware3519@reddit
Depends what games you play. If you're spending a weekend locked in your bedroom taking Fleetwood Town to Europe in Football manager that seems to be acceptable somehow. If you're playing Fortnite and streaming it that might raise some eyebrows. Interesting how there seems to be different rules for different people, it sucks.
Dread_queen23@reddit
I used to say Phil Collins was my guilty pleasure bit I don't feel guilty listening to him!
Own it! Fuck it
pajamakitten@reddit
Don't like him but will defend the Tarzan soundtrack as the greatest Disney soundtrack until I die.
Doomergeneration@reddit (OP)
I think he’s probably considered cool now, the 80s is back
KaylsTheOptimist@reddit
I was born in 2000 and love Phil Colin’s, lots of his stuff went viral on TikTok(one of my guilty pleasures) mostly another day in paradise
CatFoodBeerAndGlue@reddit
My wife loves telling everybody that my favourite film is Mean Girls - it really is one of my top 5 films.
I'm not embarrassed because I like a "girls" film or a "teen" film or whatever, but it does become embarrassing when some people imply I like it for pervy reasons which really isn't the case.
I love it because it's a genuinely hilarious and endlessly quotable film with an incredible cast.

Justboy__@reddit
During lockdown when all sport was cancelled basically the only thing that kept going was WWE wrestling so I started watching it for the first time in over 20 years and ended up getting really into and basically I’m still watching 5 years later. I came out as a fan to one of my best friends a few weeks ago and he looked at me so weird lol.
That’s about it. When I was younger I would have been ashamed to admit liking someone of the music I do but I don’t care anymore, music is too precious to live with boundaries put on yourself.

if we're talking music, i like that first maroon 5 album a lot and i know that isn't the most controversial take of all time but admitting to liking maroon 5 in any capacity at all kills a little part of me
otherwise i've been playing pokemon go again recently cause of my partner and there's nothing that's made me feel quite so much as the epitome of a sniffling fedora neckbeard as being in full view of the general public circling my thumb on my phone to aim a curveball at a pikachu
Nervous_Difficulty_6@reddit
I personally don’t find it embarrassing, but I guess it fits into this category.
I absolutely love heavy metal. From bands such as Linkin Park, to Slaughter to Prevail. Anything goes. But I also enjoy hip hop, grime, dance, electronic etc etc. Basically, if I like it, I like it. One minute I could be listening to Justin Bieber, next minute it’s heavy.
But, so many friends make comments such as ‘how the fuck do you like this shit’ when it comes on in the car. To the point where, I’ll purposely change my playlist for a journey if I know someone doesn’t like it.
I understand, it’s not for everyone, so I won’t make everyone endure it and that’s fine. But please, no need to make comments about a genre of music just because you don’t like it.
Tao626@reddit
Metal friends say all I listen to is shit like Rihanna.
Normal friends say all I listen to is shit like Monolith Death Cult.
Obviously, it's me that has a narrow and poor music taste.
Foreskin_Ad9356@reddit
when i showed my friend russian grizzly in america and various rammstein songs they said it didnt even sound like music lmao
Nervous_Difficulty_6@reddit
Haha Russian Grizzly, what a song. Yeah, had the same reactions! Oh well ☺️
daddywookie@reddit
I’m a sucker for disco. It’s just fun music. Anything will strike a chord though, Metallica to Mozart.
I think music is so personal that you can’t use it as a stick to beat someone with, they’ll just beat you right back.
Nervous_Difficulty_6@reddit
Eh, that’s fine! My Mrs loves disco stuff. To be fair, so do I sometimes, provides a proper sense of nostalgia!
It is though, you’re right. But I never put anyone down for their choice in music.

I love singing, some people have even said I have a good voice, but ask me to sing and I'd rather crawl into a hole and stay there for eternity 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I have a pretend singing voice I use which is very annoying, only 1 of my brothers, my boyfriend, mum & dad, my manager at work & my 3 primary school friends have heard my real voice and some have asked why I won't sing normally when its actually good, idk why, I convince myself theyre lying and I will NEVER sing normally in front of people, I go so red and sweaty and simply cannot 🤣🤣🤣
I forgot, on boxing day I was very hungover and tired and put on the spot at my mother in laws for karaoke and idk why, I couldn't muster the fake voice, the real one came out, it was Adele and people spent a good hour complimenting my voice, I wanted to die 🙃
BigJimNoFool@reddit

So the answer is 👏 Don’t ever be embarrassed for the things you like 👏
One of the things I was embarrassed about was being a Disney adult and wearing graphic tees.

Crocs. Constantly told how ugly they look and they’re embarrassing. But I’ve gotten over really caring. I have an old knee injury, always had flat and wide feet. Other shoes have always been super uncomfortable for me (Skechers, nike etc). Crocs are so comfortable I can wear them all day and have had less knee pain wearing them. I live in them now and barely wear anything else unless I’m dressing up
I used to be a massive hater and thought they were super ugly and embarrassing too…. Until I tried them on

No-Garbage9500@reddit
I'm quite into Warhammer and general miniature painting as well as gaming, it always feels a bit awkward to bring up... but once the person I'm speaking to realises that yes, I can hold a conversation about something other than this hobby and yes, I showered today (I really, really wish more people in this community could do at least one of these. The latter, by preference) it gets most people worth a damn interested enough to actually find out a bit more.
I'm a decent painter, which any teacher at school who tried to teach me their version of art would find ridiculous. I can focus for a 3-4 hour session barraged by complicated rules, measurements and whatnot, and even occasionally win a few games. The whole affair needs a fair bit of committed skill and knowledge, and is in general something that is an actual hobby that requires a lot of time and mental investment.
As I approach a grand 40 years of age I realise that an awful lot of people don't have anything like that, and that absence generally manifests in pretty unpleasant ways. Unhealthy attachment to work, obsession with whatever the algorithm shoves down their throat because their phone provides all their entertainment... No sense of who they are or what they like, so are susceptible to being told these things by people with power in those scenarios.
Meh, I'll keep improving my art, and keep my brain active with these games. While I feel some leftover embarrassment from being younger and bullied about it (fuck anyone whoever bullied anyone else as a kid, you ruin people for life), now I'm older and more confident I quite like staying true to myself and presenting my hobby without making fun of it in anticipation of anyone else doing it first.
It feels ridiculous to write, but when I was single it was by far the best way to get a decent woman interested and talking on dates. Who knew. Women like men who have passion about something. Stay true to your hobbies, any mini painting bros out there, if you're an otherwise adjusted (and showered) human it's a definite net positive.
