Do we underrate how good it is to live here?

I think it really depends on who you are and where you're living. As a trans person, I'd be much better off living in many first world countries than this one at this point in time. As a disabled person living under the NHS trust that's currently bottom of the NHS league tables, my needs are not being met. For sure, it could absolutely be worse, but when I think worse I'm thinking of places that are considered lesser in the minds of most Brits than the UK in the first place. I'd love to be more positive about being here, but for someone of us, we are living in a country where our media & those in charge seem to believe we're a negative talking point and not people. Negativity just breeds negativity unfortunately.

I've been let go at the end of probation because apparently kicking up a stink about the head chef trying to put hands on someone who was barely an adult because of something he miss-heard isn't the done thing. One of many terrible things going on at that place mind, and would have quit the following week, so absolutely no loss to me.

That'd be roughly how much it costs to get top surgery, so my transgender ass is going boob free. Massive improvement to my life immediately both in terms of giving myself some body positivity, and also on account of genuinely needing a reduction at a FF cup. My shoulders and gender dysphoria will thank me.

My dad watches a lot of stuff on TV about history, the weather, the police and any cheaply produced action movie going, and I have to say, those channels really do know their target audience, because I have no need for vinyl kitchen refurbs, cruises or life insurance bought via phone.

Backed up my father in a custody hearing that she was an abusive cunt. The absolute validation I got from the interviewing psychiatrist calling her out on how piss poor of a parent she was to all of us still makes me feel seen today. Funnily enough, none of my very poor decisions seem to disappoint him at all.

Is my husband addicted to WOW?

I used to be pretty chronically addicted to WoW. The difference is I was a  young 20 something in a very bad place with nothing else to do, and not a grown man with a wife and new baby.  He needs to examine why he's playing so much and neglecting everything else. For me it was a mix of depression, undiagnosed ADHD & terrible loneliness, but it's important that *he's* the one who works out why he's got such a need to game.

For every "I'm doing amazing in my late 20s/early 30's!" thing you see on your socials, there are equally as many of us in shit living situations, on minimum wage, with no savings. I don't think we, as a whole, are doing much wrong, we're just very disadvantaged on the as a generation.  Also don't be afraid to go to a food bank if you feel you need to, I promise you people from all walks of life in all different places use them, it's there when you're in need.

That's just the industry I'm afraid, some kitchens are run by twats who have very outdated ideals. I don't buy the idea that you should just put up with it, because you wouldn't in the vast majority of workplaces, but kitchens being what they are, making a fuss may well make stuff worse, or lose your job.  Not something I'd recommend people stick with, with the exception of those who have a passion for the work or no other options. Especially wouldn't recommend for women, most amount of sexism I've ever experienced in one industry at once.

Ah I feel the same way at 29 as you do at 37. Too sick to work atm, but the ADHD makes being at home insufferable, and life seems to have drained me of all my creative juices so I no longer do arts and crafts the way I used to.  Things are looking up though, I am really enjoying reconnecting with some games I used to play, and, hopefully, after a year or so of waiting I'll finally be off several NHS waitlists this year, so maybe I'll finally get my health sorted in order to do something with myself 🤞

Agree with you completely here. I think, unfortunately, being a nation of cat lovers, we've accepted that the con of having outdoor cats, reduced wildlife, is one we're fine with, and because that happened long ago, it'd take a monumental effort and persuasion of the public to put the less cats into practice. I don't think it helps that America tends to have more housing space but less safe outdoors, and the other way round for the UK either. Like you've said, a disconnect from reality, and a communication issue.

I did see your comment actually! I thought to myself that it was very poignant, I semi frequent BORU, and also don't understand what half the acronyms specifically about the US are either 🤷 Much as I do love that sub, it's very guilty of American defaultism, especially when the OOP in question clearly isn't in America, and so the American experience won't apply.

I think the thing that bothers me most is that most people who have outdoor cats really don't seem to give a shit if it's the other way round. People can keep their cats indoors, if that's what's most suitable and works, good. Heck I'll even conclude in places where they *are* a threat to the wildlife or vice versa, by a very busy main road, or have an ill cat, it does make sense to keep them inside (though ur right, I think a lot of them don't get the stimulation that outdoor cats do, because people don't bother enough). But god forbid you express that you live in a country where letting them out is the norm. It's an affront to everyone it seems.  Don't even get me started on the "Outdoor cats only live till 6." Crap, because I think literally every cat owner in the UK would probably dispute it.

Sorry, I'm not precisely answering the question properly here, because it's not vernacular in particular that bothers me, but the American Defaultism that goes on is very annoying.  I've recently been informed I'm immorally wrong and hell for letting my cat outdoors, American Defaultism at its finest.

What do you do when you see a horse (ridden or being walked) in the road?

Posted by originallyale@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 645 comments

Dry_Construction4939@reddit

As someone who's been the poor bugger on the horse with noisy, speeding twats driving past, you get a wide berth and a slow drive past when safe to do so.  Unfortunately IME, it's not unique to horses, the amount of people I've had try to push me off road on a motorbike because I can't go as fast in certain conditions on 2 wheels as they can on 4 is nuts. I'm sure cyclists would also tell us the same, there's just something about a metal box around them that makes people lose all common sense.

Are UK workplaces severely understaffed and running on minimum?

Posted by Desperate-Drawer-572@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 305 comments

Dry_Construction4939@reddit

It's neither really. Business are trying to get away with the bare minimum staffing for maximum profit. The hospitality & retail industries are particularly suspect for this, I've worked in 2 kitchens, 1 coffee shop & 1 supermarket over the past 2 years (seasonal), and both are running on bare minimum on purpose by parent companies who have never set foot on a shop/kitchen floor in their life, and are only really interested in seeing what assets they can strip. High staff turnover doesn't matter, because the job market right now isn't great, so the job can just be filled again easily.

As an aside (because most people have already theoretically said you're right, and you are), I feel like the best way to get dangerous drivers off the road would be a massive improvement of transport links. Particularly rural. My next door neighbour is nearing her 90's. She's by far to dangerous to drive, but there's no public transport *at all* where I live so you can't really expect her to give up her car.  I also don't know a single one of my friends or colleagues my age (mid to late 20's) who actually drives if they live somewhere with good public transport.

Would have been about 14 on a charging horse at full gallop towards a main road. Very lucky I managed to pull her head round in the end or we would have had problems. Horses are lovely animals, but occasionally they do like to remind you that they're basically just pure muscle on fast legs.

Or something of that variation, followed by massive up votes.  Look I'm not a massive fan of her on panel shows either, but people have got to stop pretending it's and unpopular opinion and they're gonna get shit on for it because she's disabled. It's always the top bloody comment.

Why is the job market so bad?

Posted by Desperate-Drawer-572@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 307 comments

Dry_Construction4939@reddit

It's just late stage capitalism unfortunately.  Companies try and get away with the minimum amount of everything. Minimum staffing levels, minimum training, minimum hours paid. Putting out "apprenticeships" for things that neither come with education attached, nor are actual apprenticeships, as a way to skirt paying the minimum wage. Often tend to find this is all mandated by someone working in a location miles removed from "the shop floor" (or usually kitchen in my case) who has absolutely no idea what he'll they're creating for workers, and untill everything breaks, they don't really care. Minimum care given for "working class peons" maximum amount of "profit" milked. That's the model of today's job market.

Dry_Construction4939@reddit

From the perspective of someone who has committed themselves to a lot of entry level jobs as of late because I have neither time nor qualifications, I have to say the scummiest business practices I've come across are business who don't understand the concept of "An entry level job." I do not owe you experience for an entry level position, that's the whole point of one. You owe training for an entry level job, that's part of the deal. The problem I've found is, all companies both expect the first, and refuse to do the second.

What's been your oddest encounter with the police?

Posted by OkWhile8478@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 589 comments

Dry_Construction4939@reddit

Upsetting context for this one is my mother is a child abuser. One day she decides to chuck me out of my car, beat the shit out of me by a water tower and encourage my brother to do the same. The people living by the water tower have enough sense to call the police over this.  I start walking back, get picked up by 2 officers who I explain the situation to them, so they get me in the car and drive me back to her. Naturally of course, this means, instead of arresting her, they change her flat tyre for her (presumably the reason she was mad), and then leave. No arrest issued. Weirdest encounter I've had with Humberside police for sure. Unfortunately between my younger sister and myself they've also had 7 other encounters where they've had a chance to put a stop to child abuse. I'm not entirely sure the force isn't just 3 pigs in a uniform.

I'm trying to run away from home. Can someone give me tips?
