Do you ever watch an advert and realise you’re not the target audience?
Posted by SearchLightsInc@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 181 comments
Being poor and having to watch adverts is wild.
Any brand new car advert I sit and I think “not targeted at me, I could never buy that”
Sofa adverts - “that house is massive, I can’t even buy a small home”
Kitchen sales/windows - “I don’t own a home this isn’t directed at me”
Holiday adverts/insurance - “not for me, can’t afford trips abroad”
And yet I have to watch these adverts regardless. Am I the only one thinking “I am not the target audience” ?
arashi256@reddit
Honestly, I'm not paying attention enough to care what it's flogging and whether it applies to me. I just sort of tune out for the duration.
SearchLightsInc@reddit (OP)
I envy that
Away-Ad4393@reddit
I smiled at your comment about the sofa. I often wonder why house furniture is getting larger when the housing being built is getting smaller🤷♀️
SearchLightsInc@reddit (OP)
Right??? The houses are unrealistically big, I see SCS advertise for a back to back front room!!
Extra-Sound-1714@reddit
I think it's why IKEA sofas are so popular
MaxMouseOCX@reddit
I actively avoid watching any and all adverts, and it's not because of my financial situation (my situation is fine) - it's because I'm here to watch something that I enjoy, entertainment - i don't need anyone trying to sell me anything, even if it's something I want whilst I'm doing that.
I will decide when to look into the information regarding a purchase when I want to.
In short it boils all the way down to "I won't do what you tell me to do".
There are a plethora of ways to completely negate adverts, I'm not sure if I'm on my own with this but I will literally move heaven and earth to avoid advertisements of any kind.
mrs_shrew@reddit
I deliberately turn off the sound and refuse to look at the telly or screen during unskippable adverts. I won't let them into my brain! I literally look away in a huff for 3 minutes.
RockAndHardPlace81@reddit
Me too! It gives me a weird satisfaction to think I've made the company waste their advertising budget on someone who won't watch or listen to it.
Slightly_underated@reddit
I do this too! If I'm watching YouTube and an ad comes on I literally flip my phone over so my brain can't be infected with the utter nonsense coming out of it! It's like my own little rebellion against an over advertised world.
arashi256@reddit
I had to practice. Try it, you'll be happier.
WalnutWhip00@reddit
I'm a female in my mid 20s I keep getting baby related stuff. I don't have kids and don't want any.
thb202@reddit
Facebook keeps advertising me, an atheist male, hijabs at M&S, it’s pretty clear that the Facebook algorithm pushes products that cause gammons to engage (judging by the comments below). I’d be pretty ashamed with that if I was the m&s marketing department
InternationalRide5@reddit
I never knew M&S did hijabs.
SearchLightsInc@reddit (OP)
I’ve never even seen an advert resembling that on Facebook, mad.
DoctorOctagonapus@reddit
There was that time a lot of people over on r/CasualUK were complaining about one ad that called them all kiddy fiddlers. Reddit apparently showed that one to every user from the UK.
SearchLightsInc@reddit (OP)
You’re dropping reddit lore without a link 😂
DoctorOctagonapus@reddit
Managed to find it without searching for anything too suspect! https://www.reddit.com/r/CasualUK/comments/utc7j9/is_anyone_else_getting_a_reddit_advert_for_nonce/
BrissBurger@reddit
Daytime TV during the week - I don't want a funeral plan and a free Parker pen.
raquille-@reddit
Yes. Tampon adverts for example.
sjr0754@reddit
You should see my Facebook ads, I get random Christian groups, lab equipment, hand forged armour, construction vehicles and once a clinic offering vaginoplasty for victims of FGM. Given that I'm an atheist, who works in a factory, who can't afford construction equipment, and is most definitely male, I don't think Meta's algorithm is as clever as they let on.
SearchLightsInc@reddit (OP)
wtf
sjr0754@reddit
Yup, somehow without me telling it to, I don't get ads for gambling or booze, which is accurate I don't drink or gamble.
HarketSavoy@reddit
I scroll through Snapchat and there’s a gambling app every 30 seconds. You have to watch the full advert and it drives me insane.
Jaded_Library_8540@reddit
Young men 18-25 are the most at risk of developing gambling addictions, so obviously they advertise on Snapchat
You're not even allowed to use models or actors under 25 in gambling adverts for this reason
HarketSavoy@reddit
I’m a 50 year old hag, who doesn’t gamble. And I swear it’s every 20-30 seconds. I have the app for my friend who uses it. It’s also shocking what they allow for apps aimed at children.
SignificanceHead9957@reddit
I never gamble either, never have but I get gambling ads all the time.
lavender_cookie_@reddit
I was shocked seeing a gambling advert in the early evening on the TV at the gym! I thought strict laws were put into place against that in my country, must have changed the rules.
RecentTwo544@reddit
Let me guess - you're ad-block extensioned up to the hilt, were careful to decline all personal ad consents/cookies, and possibly use a VPN?
It's a great way to confuse the hell out of algorithms when sponsored content does get through.
Vixrotre@reddit
I let Google personalize my ads and I also ticked options to not show me ads related to pregnancy, weight loss, gambling and dating.
Guess what ads Google shows me.
Agathabites@reddit
I was a pilot for a while, then a police officer, then a bit later I was a doctor. I swing between being young and old, male and female. According to the algorithm I struggle with penile dysfunction while being pregnant. I’m very confused.
DoctorOctagonapus@reddit
For a while I knew when Ramadan was because I'd get loads of Facebook ads for Muslim charities around that time. Never been a Muslim.
I also got a lot of ads for pregnancy care and new baby stuff, which is rather strange given I'm a man.
Then there was Facebook's response to my last breakup, which was two months of ads for wedding planners. Learn to read the room.
lavender_cookie_@reddit
I got a religious one very anti abortion I was like well the algorithm isn't working as I am pro choice 😂 I got a lot of ads for weiner problems as well I was like uhhh I don't have one of those 😂😂
Glad-Pomegranate6283@reddit
I had an anti gay marriage one on YouTube the other day (talking about how gay ppl have ruined the sanctity of marriage). Idk why or how given I’m a lesbian
zerumuna@reddit
The only ads I ever get are dick pills (I don’t have a dick) and pregnancy tests. I can’t get pregnant anyway due to medical issues, I’m on other medication that I’m not allowed to be pregnant on even if I could get pregnant, I’m childfree regardless and I’m asexual 😂😂
All the data on me these companies are selling and this is the best they can come up with!
External-Praline-451@reddit
You can adjust the types of ads you get I believe, and tell them to stop showing certain advertisers and content. I've done that with Reddit and Facebook which I'm only still on for the local Facebook drama fun.
sjr0754@reddit
Oh I know that, but to be honest, I enjoy the chaos of it
External-Praline-451@reddit
Ha ha, fair enough! I got too wound up seeing god botherers adverts, etc!
Azuras-Becky@reddit
As a woman who's into a lot of stuff the algorithms likely consider 'male pursuits' (gaming, sci-fi, PC hardware and such) on the rare occasions I do see ads I've clearly broken them. Women's fashion ads, penis enlargement ads, car ads and female-led BDSM dating app ads can all be spotted in a single doomscroll on Reddit on my phone.
Inevitable-Debt4312@reddit
When TV adverts started it was all about showing ordinary families in ordinary houses, and then we started getting ‘Black Magic’ style stuff with guys creeping up the outside of homes to leave a box of chocolates, which was pure fantasy - and of course I can enjoy the chocs of if I want to without feeling the need to go to Paris. Nowadays some ads are fantastic - perfume, for instance - but a lot of stuff - cars for instance - is shot in exotic places so the cars look out of place in Salford.
In other ways advertising genuflects to fashions in social engineering without actually being involved.
Suspicious_Banana255@reddit
I usually mute adverts and look at my phone, so I don't know what they are flogging
Level_Engineer@reddit
Adverts are generally aimed at people with money
Conscious_Cat_6204@reddit
That’s funny as the people with money are able to pay the extra to not see the ads in the first place.
C2BK@reddit
They're more aimed at people who are prepared to borrow money.
People "with" money tend to still have money because they haven't pissed it away on the shiny things that the ads tell them they need.
Level_Engineer@reddit
Yeah fair point
SearchLightsInc@reddit (OP)
Exactly why I, as a non-monied person, should be exempt from watching them!
Conscious_Cat_6204@reddit
Being from Northern Ireland, I quickly learned to ignore ads as most would have a disclaimer at the bottom saying ‘Excludes NI’. Even perks from banks etc don’t apply here as we don’t have the chains the perks are for.
Agathabites@reddit
Never seen an ad that is aimed at me. Always feel kind of like an alien.
pixelunicorns@reddit
I watch a lot of Murder She Wrote, Columbo, Poirot, etc during the day so I see a lot of ads for retirement, funeral, cruises for older couples but I'm in my early 30s!
ExcitementKooky418@reddit
Absolutely. I am totally sick of all ads, even if they are relevant to me, it's just so much overhyped claims and flashy bullshit.
But also, if I had enough money that I could afford these products, I could afford the more premium subscription for netflix/prime etc so that I don't have to see the ads
Intruder313@reddit
All of them - especially the current obsession with cleaning products
JennyW93@reddit
I don’t watch many adverts, but I live on a street that’s predominantly pensioners, so I get a lot of leaflets through the door for mobility aids and funeral planning.
SamVimesBootTheory@reddit
My dad sometimes buys plants once in one of the packages all the assorted advertising junk bundled in very much gave the impression they assumed anyone into gardening was an older middle class person
Isgortio@reddit
I get so many leaflets for retirement homes and funeral planning.
MelodicAd2213@reddit
Same, live on south coast, next town along gets called heaven’s waiting room
Longjumping-Gap-5986@reddit
I live next to a coastal town in the south that is called this.
We're either neighbours or everywhere on the south coast is a portal to the afterlife.
dospc@reddit
Most depressing for me are the ones you get in the run up to April 6th being like "do you have £20k savings from THIS YEAR that you haven't put in an ISA yet?"
Um, no.
Fit-Bedroom-7645@reddit
Yes, I constantly get AI generated Tai Chi scam ads for some reason. Like thousands of them. Presumably the target audience is people who can't tell it's AI and a scam. And no, the AI generated mildly Eastern looking fellow with an eight pack didn't get it from Tai Chi walking.
Luton_Enjoyer@reddit
Most ads are targeted at me through algorithms. They advertise things I can afford, but nothing I'm interested in buying.
Inevitable-Debt4312@reddit
Constantly making you feel ignored, alienated? Dear me, I’m sorry. I think TV adverts have more effect than we realise.
They sell aspiration, of course, but they don’t seem to consider that they are actually alienating their market. I am myself (a little) concerned with two matters which almost seem to indicate ‘policy’ among advertisers.
SearchLightsInc@reddit (OP)
This is it. It’s not that I want those things (in terms of someone who is driven by material possessions) it’s just the fact that I’ve realised “oh, I won’t ever own a house, drive a flash car, have a big sofa and go on nice holidays” and it IS almost a constant reminder of the alienation from “mainstream” society - but the TV was never about representing poor/average people.
TomasNavarro@reddit
Most of them
Seriously at this point when someone says that companies are collecting all this data on me and selling it, I'm starting to wonder if they actually are, because it's certainly not advertising companies buying that data
Did you know that co-pilot is 15% off for non profits? Obviously something I need to keep in mind if I start a non profit and decide to use AI
bars_and_plates@reddit
This is actually quite funny because I could easily afford anything in the adverts, and they still look naff
Brand new car advert - they all look worse than the car I have and 3x the price, even the "cool" stuff like land rovers I'd rather have an old defender
Sofa adverts / kitchen sales / windows - almost always aimed at the kind of monochrome "deano" style
Holiday adverts - doesn't everyone just price compare hotels and flights and go
IME if you ever watch daytime TV it's just constantly banal stuff like how fairy liquid is apparently the best, I've used the absolute cheapest washing liquid for my entire life
SearchLightsInc@reddit (OP)
Always wondered what it’s like for the other side - the people who actually have the money for these things, it seems you guys aren’t impressed by that stuff either! Perhaps the target audience is very niche as you’ve described.
MaltedMilkBiscuits10@reddit
All the adverts are just trying to exploit you.
It's nothing about whether you can afford it as with almost every product and service nowadays is finance.
You got people rock bottom poor in a tiny council flat will see a advert on a TV for say a £3999 sofa but will always get accepted for extortionate credit.
It's the same with new car finance, what average person has £40,000 for EV? They don't but they can get finance on it.
Sometimes it's not the product that's the money maker it's the finance that gets you that product.
As for irrelevant ads say web browsing, seriously check what data you are sharing. Amazon, Google, smartphones are always listening. If you have certain data sharing enabled I can assure you, that family discussion about something will result in ads at that discussion. For example we have a family member that has a house full of Amazon smart speakers, we all had a discussion about a teenage relative starting her periods, next day we all had ads from Amazon and recommendations on period underwear. It's not uncommon either for apps and content you watch on say Instagram, tiktok and Facebook to generate ads.
It's incredibly important to understand what data you are sharing through your devices and apps.
GreatChaosFudge@reddit
Virtually all the ads I see on YT are Monzo or Revolut. I watch a lot of gaming videos. I don’t see the connection, but there must be one.
helen2353@reddit
I’m 36 and a big fan of crime drama, all of the ads are funeral plans, direct cremation, gifts in wills, walk in baths and stairlifts - I don’t know whether to be ashamed that I have the same taste in TV as a geriatric or proud that I’m the youngest swinger in town.
fivebyfive12@reddit
I came here to say this! Endless adverts for chairs that help you get up. I'm 37 🤣
360Saturn@reddit
It always feels a little morbid that the ads on when murder mysteries air are always about funeral memorabilia!
SearchLightsInc@reddit (OP)
Hahaha this is hilarious 😂
Paulstan67@reddit
Many adverts are purely for product/company awareness.
You will know the name of that kitchen company and if you are even in the market for a kitchen there is a good chance you would look into their products.
Extension_Pickle_581@reddit
Any car advert.
AndyOf77@reddit
I watch a lot of youtube and I have got very good at not watching adverts, I simply back out of a video continuously until it either plays or only gives me a 5 second ad.
Capital-Squirrel3522@reddit

Busy-Doughnut6180@reddit
There was a time when I thought that no one could actually buy anything from those TV ads apart from rich people. I thought that those kitchen ads, for example, were more like an elaborate example displaying all the possible ways you could use that design, but surely most people would only get a few parts of it, if they owned their own house and were allowed to have work on the kitchen done in the first place.
Well, I was far too old when I realised I'm just poor and many people do in fact have kitchens just like in those daytime TV adverts. And the cars. And those stupid sofas.
CouchAlchemist@reddit
Ads are the time gaps I get to waste time on Reddit.
Upbeat-Fish-3348@reddit
I regularly watch ITV Quiz and they have an ongoing advert for Simplicity Cremations which has the most annoying jingle but it comes on every ad break, I feel like saying come on man I'm only 29.

Every daytime TV ad implies you're either about to die or about to wet yourself.
Well I suppose one out of two ain't bad...
Dry_Construction4939@reddit
My dad watches a lot of stuff on TV about history, the weather, the police and any cheaply produced action movie going, and I have to say, those channels really do know their target audience, because I have no need for vinyl kitchen refurbs, cruises or life insurance bought via phone.
anti-sugar_dependant@reddit
No, I'm poor but ublock is free so I don't watch ads. I also don't watch live TV (saves cost of a TV licence) and stream everything for free, and the people who run the streaming sites don't include ads when they pirate the content. So the only ads I see are the ones YT creators do themselves (ublock blocks the YT added ones) and I just fast forward through those.
TruthfulRepugnance@reddit
I tune out for the most part. Annoying ads ensure I won't buy their product. Online ads with a comment section receive my thoughts. Recently got blocked from some rice cake manufacturer (Quaker?) for suggesting that their rice cake + tomato sauce + cheese 'pizza' looked like sadness and disappointment. 🤷
Glad-Pomegranate6283@reddit
I’m banned from commenting on the Canada goose fb page😂
DameKumquat@reddit
Prime thinks anyone who watches crime drama is obsessed with laundry and stain removal and washing up, but particularly obsessed with the scents of their towels, bubbles, and the clothes of everyone around them.
Spouse and I can't stand artificial scents and recoil at all of them. He'd like Febreeze and Glade banned, I'd just like them heavily taxed to raise money from the stupid.
RaspberryJammm@reddit
We also try to avoid heavy fragrances in our household. Have you found a decent floor cleaner that doesn't have a ton of artificial fragrance?
Glad-Pomegranate6283@reddit
It depends on your budget but I use Smol. I have rats which are v prone to respiratory inflammation and infections and I have migraines, works pretty well and smells pretty mildly of green tea (I think)
boudicas_shield@reddit
Every time I have to turn to my husband and exclaim, “Fabric softener is SO BAD for your clothes; why are people still using it?!” I think he’d pay Amazon at this point to simply show us any other advert.
DameKumquat@reddit
This is as well as fabric softener - little beads to put in your washer to add extra smell. WTF?
Taskmaster is better as kid2 mutes the ads and provides own commentary.
Glad-Pomegranate6283@reddit
The fabric scent beads are awful ! Fabric conditioner is usually grim bc of the animal fat in it I think
360Saturn@reddit
"Watching a crime drama? You must be looking for tips of what not to do!"

As someone with an eating disorder history I get GLP ads on YouTube semi often lol. I once had a flyer posted through my door about conservatory fittings, I lived in a high rise flat on the 9th floor. I once also had an ad for combine harvesters when I can’t even drive a regular car
Goldf_sh4@reddit

I have a small income so I live frugally but I'm careful and get by. I haven't used credit cards or loans since the 90's so, while I owe no money, I think my credit score will be terrible. I buy something online maybe once a year.
All this means there is nothing to entice me into buying. I do cycle a lot and do searches online about bicycle stuff so occasionally I get ads related to this.
Other than this the ads I get are for gambling sites (I never gamble), funeral plans and, bizarrely, very very long ads for industrial plant items like CNC machines, lathes etc.

Brands and Adverts were I am never the target market...fucking mad.
banwe11@reddit
Adverts aren't just about trying to get you to buy stuff right now. They also intended to raise brand awareness so that if/when you are in a position to buy a sofa/windows/new kitchen etc in the future, you will think of that brand and have some trust in it.
Damage2Damage@reddit
By that point the brand had usually irritated me too much by keeping me away from the content I am trying to access, and I'll go with someone else

Yes to your first question. Its genuinely life changing as far as an app goes. The in video sponsorship blocking as amazing - it seemlessly skips it.
You also log in with your account so it has all your subscriptions and algorithm as normal.

FewAnybody2739@reddit
That's good, they're less likely to tempt you into buying some crap. Which is why Google, Facebook and others want to track everything you do.
Some things though, I don't think even if I was looking to buy that sort of thing, that the advert would be effective. I'm not going to buy a car because of an advert, I'm going to buy one if my current one needs replacing and be much more thorough than "I saw a video of a left hand drive version once and it was sunny".

Thanks for confirming, I thought having that level of self awareness was weird but I guess very normal!

No I have never watched any advert and even considered that I am or am not the target audience. I do not yearn for things out of my grasp and the thought of why am I seeing this has never crossed my mind. I fully understand that there are varying levels of wealth within society and I consider that completely normal. I was taught very young that material wealth does not determine the status of an individual. My dad always told me not to be fooled by the man that drives the flash car or wears fancy clothes because anyone can get what they want on finance. The only thing that person has more of than me is debt. I often think that if I can’t own nothing then nothing can own me.

Your dad was smart, and so are you!

I really don't understand who the target audience is.
It's not about money; I'm financially solvent, but I'm not the target audience either.
I think their audience is people who are a bit dim / financially uneducated, and who are daft enough to put themselves into debt for things they're told that they need. :(

Yes, I get a rotation of either tardigrade plushies or Christian church adverts. Not much in between really, and I don't want either of them.

Yes, I’ve watched a few Bollywood movies, I now get adverts for finance services to transfer money back to my parents and family in India. Im from the UK and my parents live in the same village as me!

Car adverts are basically just advertising to my dog and she can't afford one either. The weird one's are when I get ads for dating apps. Been married 15 years and neither of us have the energy to step out lol.

Haha I’m cackling that they’re trying to get you to have an affair
Fine_Analyst_4408@reddit
Yeah it's super awkward when they play when my husband is sitting next to me lol.

Personally I can't see myself buying all those feminine hygiene products I keep seeing advertised.

Warching tv ads now takes me back to the times when Barbie ads were on TV but the dolls were too expensive for a regular family in Eastern Europe where I grew up:)
