If you got given 10k to improve your life, what would you spend it on?

You've got to spend it, no savings - paying off debt is okay.
FluteGunner@reddit
a Japanese toilet
jdlyndon@reddit
I got one for less that £200. You don’t need the whole toilet just the lid. Best money I ever spent.
ShanghaiGoat@reddit
About to upgrade my bathroom, Japanese technology 1st on my list!
be_sugary@reddit
Same here we got the £500 one from Victoria plumbing - very good reviews!
ShanghaiGoat@reddit
I'm looking at £2,500+, a real monster!
be_sugary@reddit
The £2500 cost was not justified in our renovation.
We are getting super expensive kitchen appliances instead!
Let’s hope the £500 doesn’t die to soon!
ShanghaiGoat@reddit
Fortunately, my kitchen is already done. I lived in Asia for a few years and once rented a place with the Japanese Lavy and I never looked back. Quite understand about decent kitchen appliances.
How_do_I_work_this_@reddit
If you want a cleaner feeling after a number 2, just use a jug of water to clean yourself, people have been doing this for years and years...
FluteGunner@reddit
It’s 2026, I want an AI powered robot with a 4k camera to blast me clean then store the footage in the cloud cheers
ibby20000@reddit
Honestly just install a handheld bidet it's in some ways better
How_do_I_work_this_@reddit
Just use a jug of water and your hand!
Salty_Ad4685@reddit
doesn’t that just run off of the cold water pipe?
loberts@reddit
I am currently getting my post poo enema on my Grohe Sensia right now. Do recommend.
BaldAnchor_W@reddit
When’s the tea party so you can show everyone? (Personally I think bragging about such a fact shitter is perfectly reasonable)
MisterD90x@reddit
A bidet would be glorious
Spigsman@reddit
The portable bidets are a good, cheaper starting point with no plumbing needed.
Kizzieuk@reddit
I have a bidet toilet seat. its amazing and very affordable.
West-Season-2713@reddit
I moved to a house that has one. Needless to say, the first thing I’m doing when I move to my next house is buy and install a bidet.
DocSax@reddit
This is a great shout. We have one, I think it was like £2k. I wasn't bothered but my partner wanted it. So glad we got one though, I will never look back. Nothing beats a warm seat on a cold day, amongst other things!
VolcanicBear@reddit
You can get a heated bidet for like £200.
Melodic-Daisy01@reddit
Clear my debts, learn to drive and buy a car.
SilverTangerine5599@reddit
Unless you've got very small debts I've got bad new about how much driving lessons and cars cost nowadays.
Certain-Trade-4121@reddit
Driving lessons might happen just 1-2 hours a week. For the rest of the week they can practice with a friend. Get an old shitbox for £2000-3000, sort some insurance out (£1000-2000ish), stick some L plates on it and get a friend with a license to come sit in the car with you.
yolo_snail@reddit
I paid less than £1k in total for my driving lessons, including the test etc.
Zzzeekin@reddit
I paid around £1K for my lessons but that was awhile ago when I was paying £20 an hour and I did about 32 hours, plus theory & practical it probably ended up about £800 in the end. My daughter has just started her lessons now and it’s £45 an hour, if she does the same hours as me it’ll be £1440 before she’s even looked at booking tests.
How long ago did you pass’
yolo_snail@reddit
Daveddozey@reddit
But when was that. £1000 in 1972 is somewhat different to £1000 in 2022
yolo_snail@reddit
long_legged_twat@reddit
It's because your not fitting the narrative.
buffalosoldier111@reddit
I had 10 lessons for £280, £85 for theory and test. £365 all in
de-tree-fiddy@reddit
Everyone just posting what they paid like it means anything.
There are so many variables.
MorningToast@reddit
My not fitting the narrative?
yolo_snail@reddit
That's Reddit for you though.
audigex@reddit
I'm not sure why you'd be downvoted initially, your experience isn't wildly outside the norm
Average cost for a driving lesson today is £25-30/hour, with 40-50 hours of lessons on average before passing the test
That means a typical cost would be £1000-1500 plus £85 for the tests assuming you passed first time (which should be a given for the theory, at least)
You getting it all done for £1000 puts you a *little* below average with current prices, but not by some crazy margin
It's entirely plausible for someone who takes to it fairly well to pass in closer to 20 hours and spend less than £600, so £1000 is fairly sensible - albeit towards the lower end of the scale
yolo_snail@reddit
Driving lessons are nowhere near £20-30 an hour anymore. You're looking at £35-45 depending on where you are!
WankyWarrior@reddit
Same, it was like 25 years ago though
Omg 💀
yolo_snail@reddit
I did mine 2 years ago.
I think the thing that saved me the most money was doing a semi-intensive course. So I did 3 hour lessons lessons, twice a week.
I think the main reason why people spend so much money on driving lessons is because they do an hour or 2 a week.
How the fuck are you supposed to actually learn anything in that amount of time?
It's made that way for instructors to make more money as it takes you longer to learn.
your-a-bellend@reddit
You did right thing. I did similar to you but I did 2 hour lessons 3-4 times a week. It was a good few years ago though. But my mates all ended up doing double the amount of lessons than me.
Rusty_Tap@reddit
I had 10 hours of lessons, but was fortunate enough to spend a reasonable amount of time in the car with dad in between. I'm aware they cost about double what I paid 15 years ago now, but it's easily doable if you pay attention and just use your lessons to learn how to pass the test, rather than how to drive.
Salgado14@reddit
I spent £350 I think including the test, £25 a lesson and passed first time. Think I had 10 lessons altogether.
I had the luxury of being able to practice in my partners car at the time though which helped a lot
de-tree-fiddy@reddit
Learners insurance is cheap, maybe £30 a month.
It's when you pass your test it shoots up.
DC4840@reddit
“Old shitbox” for 2 to 3 grand?? Easily half that!
Certain-Trade-4121@reddit
Well a "nice shitbox" lol. Something you can still pass an MOT and drive around after you put it through learning how to drive.
Fenpunx@reddit
Csn't beat a well maintained shit box.
Previous-Ad7618@reddit
You can where I live, on Wednesday nights
No-Decision-6019@reddit
It’s very achievable to do
SilverTangerine5599@reddit
You can easily spend 2k to pass a driving test. Obviously you can get a car for 8k but if they have more than a few thousand in debts its going to get pretty tight.
crinemun@reddit
you don’t need to spend anywhere even close to 8k for a car, especially a first car
lellkat@reddit
Right? My first car was 1.5k and lasted me up until I sold it!
g00gleb00gle@reddit
Good luck finding them some now. I had to pay 5k for my current cheap run around.
ItzzBigAl@reddit
I paid £1300 for my cheap run around and it just passed its MOT with flying colours
g00gleb00gle@reddit
You done well finding that. Out intrest what did you find. The good old days of cheap Toyota and 107s are long gone.
CCJordan@reddit
I'm only 33 so I'm not that old, but my first car was £250
FlameFoxx@reddit
You ain't gonna get many reliable cars for 1.5k anymore
meoww303@reddit
My first car was a ford focus mk2 cost 1800, sold 1.5 years later for 1500 it's still in the family and still running strong and still worth roughly the same based on autotrader prices. This car was bought in 2021 so it's got 4 years of use for 1500 quid for my family member which is incredible tbh
RNEngHyp@reddit
Most cars last right up until you sell them :p
milkandket@reddit
I paid £900 for mine 7.5 years ago.. still driving it!
weareblades@reddit
My first car was a 2003 ford KA that I purchased in 2011. I ran that thing into the ground and lasted nearly 6 years. I only got rid because the clutch went and would have cost £300 to replace, so I sold it for £500, picked up a zetec 2014 for £1500.
I donated it to my brother before I left the UK and he says it's still going strong.
keeponkeepingup@reddit
Was that in 2026 though
lellkat@reddit
2021
keeponkeepingup@reddit
Yeah times have changed
lellkat@reddit
Ok
DidgeryDave21@reddit
And what a beautiful 6 weeks it was!
No-Oil9121@reddit
My first car was £2k. I've had it 18 months and apart from tyres it has cost me nothing and never let me down. Flew through the last MOT with no advisories either!
SpecialK04@reddit
Hahaha 😂
Galinda02@reddit
🤣🤣
Important-Example288@reddit
How much did first year insurance cost?
lellkat@reddit
First year was maybe 1.3k with a black box ..? It went down every year after
TheMSensation@reddit
One of my cousins passed about a year and a half ago, first year insurance was 2700 with a black box or 2900 without. Over 25 too.
MaximumTiny2274@reddit
now that's the question!
TicksAndBricks@reddit
The car I bought for £550 in 2015 recently sold for £1500.....
ATCQ_@reddit
Was it in 2026? Have you seen (reasonable) second hand car prices?
soulsteela@reddit
Daughters car was £800 , had it 4 months and just flew through the MOT.
plant-strong@reddit
My first car was £300 and last me four years
-mmmusic-@reddit
yeah! my first was 1k, and insurance 1.5k, and then about 300 in lessons (2023), so 2.8k all together.
still 7.2k left!
dedido@reddit
Not in 2026 you don't
Antique_Client_5643@reddit
So well into the afternoon!
lellkat@reddit
LOL it did actually last me 4 years!!
KEW95@reddit
My Fiat Panda was about £1.5k, a 2005 in 2016/2017. Insurance cost a bit less than the car, if I remember correctly, with a black box. Despite years of no claims, my Toyota Versa was £5.5k with significantly more expensive insurance (despite having my dad on it too, like the first one) and it was still a 2011 car in 2023. Even getting the black box wouldn’t bring it down.
Getting a cheap car and affordable insurance is harder than it was 10 years ago.
TimeNew2108@reddit
No but the insurance is probably £2000 if you are young
MaxMouseOCX@reddit
What's the statistic? 1/5 new drivers have an accident within some small time frame.
When you buy your first car, assume that within two years you will have wrapped it around a tree, budget for that accordingly.
weregonnamakit@reddit
Fully agree, 8k for a first car is bollocks. If there is one thing that is cheap in the UK it is second hand cars
Vsparsons227@reddit
Dont forget insurance. Depending on age that can be eye watering these days. To learn, buy and car and insure it could pretty easily run to the 10k, especially if you're a slow learner.
dahid@reddit
I spent around £1500-2000 on my lessons and test. This was back in 2019
Did like 40 hours intensive course, failed the test. Did another intensive 30 hours and passed.
Honestly the examiner made a huge difference. The first guy was so miserable it put me off, then the 2nd test I had such a nice lady just doing general chit chat it really calmed me!
comosedicewaterbed@reddit
Brainless American here. It costs 2k to take a driving test? In the US, the practice hours go on the honor system, and the driving test varies by state but can be as low as $30 or so or up to a couple hundred maximum.
shadowhunter742@reddit
Forget the car, insurance is where they get you. Could be a few grand for the year easily
Specialist_-Berry@reddit
Really important that people learn to drive as soon as they can afford the lessons, not waiting until they need a car. Much more cost effective to learn to drive then wait a few years to get the first year of insurance once the licence is a few years old. I learned at 18 but didn't get a car until 21 after uni
shadowhunter742@reddit
Yeah pretty much how I was planning on it, got stuck for a couple years with COVID restrictions right as I was starting to schedule a test.
Specialist_-Berry@reddit
Rough
WanderingAlbertRoss@reddit
Why would anyone bother if it was as much as that?
shadowhunter742@reddit
Because, unfortunately most people need to work, which means needing to travel, and public transport is really not great for most people, especially long/country journeys.
MassiveClusterFuck@reddit
There is no minimum amount of driving lessons you need to do before sitting your test, the quicker you pick it up the less it costs overall.
becooldocrime@reddit
My last car was £2k and I’ve had it for 3 years with zero issues. It sailed through its MOT last month and hasn’t cost me a penny in maintenance.
Whoisthehypocrite@reddit
2k to pass a driving test is everything that is wrong with the UK and why cost of living is so high...
Similar_Floor_7390@reddit
What about the insurance for a new driver?
SocieteRoyale@reddit
get a car for about 500 quid easily
Daveddozey@reddit
You want one with an MOT
heartpassenger@reddit
Not these days !
Champagne_Bunnny@reddit
I've seen them for sale round me for that price. Not sure how many faults you'd get thrown in as a freebie though 😂
EmiaraUK@reddit
I currently drive a 61 plate Vauxhall Insignia bought for £600. Best and cheapest car I’ve ever had 😊
Salgado14@reddit
Got a Mini One at the start of 2024 for £700 with a full MOT. Did the job of getting me about perfectly fine, though it would only play Heart radio and had no way of changing it.
Rusty_Tap@reddit
We currently have a Kia cee'd estate, the radio works lovely, but once it's on, you can't turn it off again.
Sutraner@reddit
Barring my mortgage/student loans it would easily be enough for me
Economy-Judgment-754@reddit
Sorry? 2-3k driving, 3k for a alright car and you don't have a clue about their debt.
Repulsive-Year896@reddit
Didn’t lessons, passed my test, bought a fairly reliable car and insured it all for just shy of 5k. Not all of us live in London or insist on buying expensive cars for first cars
MaximumTiny2274@reddit
you can get 20 hours driving tuition for £1000 and you can easily buy a car for 9k.
madnasher@reddit
I purchased my first car three years ago for £650. I didn't pass my test so I sold it.
Having a look now, I could get an automatic test in a few months, do some intensive courses to make sure I've got no bad habits and make me test ready, and get a cheap p.o.s automatic car, and have enough left over to clear my 5.5k debt.
lunisheep@reddit
You can still do a week intensive course for a grand or so if you have the money. Im in my 30's and if it had the money spare that is definitely what I would do. The buying the car bit would be harder though 😅
Logical_Hat_47@reddit
You'd just know that a carbrain would have top spot.
poeticwhisper69@reddit
Buy a bike, profit £9.9k
Glittering_Vast938@reddit
Get a block of 6 lessons from a qualified driving instructor, then if you can get someone to go out driving with you at least 4 times a week. I taught my son to drive doing this.
He’s also just bought a really decent low mileage used car.
dedido@reddit
Clear my debts, learn to drive and get the bus.
Chemical-Lettuce2497@reddit
Neat life hack for you, just buy the car and insure it in someone's name that has a driver's licence

Relative-Tea3944@reddit (OP)
You've been given 10k and you need to use it to improve your life, which is an incremental thing, rather than a binary thing. The improvements are proportional to the amount given. It could have been £10 or £10million and the question still works.
Two things have come out of the answers, that are really interesting to me, so far:

2 Dental impacts is going to run me like 7k private, i'm thankful I have dental insurance through my work that will pay towards some of it but it's still most likely going to be like 4k
Nice-Rack-XxX@reddit
I got 1 implant for about £6k all in. Quote was about £4K, but then they found that, due to an abscess, I needed a bone graft to strengthen the implant site. That was a grand an a half. Then there was quarterly checkups/hygenists/X-rays for a year after which added and extra £500.
I didn’t have insurance coz it stems from an accident I had in my early 20s. Need two more in years to come.
Hope yours goes according to plan
oni_666uk@reddit
I didn't even realise you could get a bone graft to improve an implant site.
Due to health issues as a kid, I ended up losing most of my top row of teeth and then was told my jawbone had disintegrated enough to make any implants impossible, so I've been stuck with getting dentures every few years for the last 4 decades.
But I have extended Mandibular tori which make wearing dentures extremely uncomfortable. So my options for a lovely smile and ever eating steak again are very limited.
Nice-Rack-XxX@reddit
The abscess was at the base of the root, of one of my front teeth. Basically where my nose meets my cheek. There was a pea sized hole straight through my maxilla bone. They filled the hole with a bone graft, and now I can no longer donate blood, or organs.
The way they explained it was that they would fill the hole with basically a “bone mixture” of my own bone (which they took scrapings of from other places in my mouth) and the donor bone. That then serves as a structure for my own bone to re-grow around, and over time, my own bone would replace the donor bone.
Not sure the technique could be used to replace something that’s fully gone, or “build up”, if you get what I mean, but might be worth asking your dentist about (if you have oodles of cash to spend too lol)
xxPlsNoBullyxx@reddit
I was quoted at around £1000-ish per bridge for flexible dentures. Removal around £100 each tooth.
Round_Grand_4716@reddit
There used to be some dental universities where you could be treated by students for a reduced rate. I don't know if that's a thing for what you need
dystopianchilli@reddit
Aww, I'm sure you'd be able to get that done on the NHS, just really need to keep phoning around and look out for any new practices setting up in and around your area. You could even go to your gp and say it's causing you to be deeply depressed and you've even considered ending it all. Maybe seems a bit extreme but it might get you a medical referral

Don't worry about the money now, it will come back to you very quickly if you're passionate about the job.
astr0pizza@reddit
Thanks a lot, I really appreciate that! Maybe I'll pull a rabbit (£10k) out a hat or something lol. I'm in my 30s and just wrapping up my undergraduate degree now, so I'm lucky in a sense that I at least now know what I'd like to do (in some form) till I kick the bucket, but I was doing something totally different to this before, so I can understand what you mean... assuming you've "fallen out of love" with it.

Really trying not to combative, but how rich are you that ten fucking grand is merely 'nice'? And for what do you desire that it wouldn't be enough?? 😅
JohnColtrane69again@reddit
I’m not rich but I feel lucky that I don’t want for anything. I’ve got my music room, all the music gear I need. Sorted. Anything I’d “want” would be like hundreds of thousands so it’s pointless thinking g about it. I know you didn’t ask but i felt the same as OP. I would just bank it and carry on.
CatEmbarrassed3306@reddit
Yeah its a nice bump. but its not life changing for me.
CatEmbarrassed3306@reddit
Lol. its ok. while 10K might be good if you have something to buy that 10K can cover. 10K generally is half a years net pay for an average person. While it can help you in the short term, it doesn't really improve my life, its a nice bump to help in the future to change ones environment or incase of redundancy or illness.
10 times that would be more helpful, since its 3-4 years of time save from working, or from saving to get a decent deposit for a home for example.

We brought a Tern GSD three years ago and it's been fantastic, zero issues. It's predominantly used for the nursery run and weekend trips with the kids so hasn't seen much cargo. twirling_daemon@reddit
I’m desperate to do a self conversion. Long way away from being able to but I keep getting all caught up and excited about the research 😂
UnusualGoal8928@reddit

twirling_daemon@reddit
Ooh that’s exciting!
Well, on you, time & finances I expect!
I’d love to have a professional involved but I really want to do/help as much as possible
One of the big issues I have (other than money 😂) is choosing the base model I want
I want it to be long term inhabitable for pets & me so I want the biggest possible that is appropriate for UK roads/drivable without having to make loads of special considerations and that will be accepted on a decent amount of campgrounds - I’d spend most of my time off campgrounds but I want the option

It's great that I have a view of the canal but it's nearly a full wall of floor to ceiling glass from the giant sliding doors so when the Sun shines in it gets instantly hot in there. It's lovely when it's just right, but being able to control how much light shines in would make it perfect.
To go along with the whole garden ending at the canal lark I'd get the rest of the outdoors fixed. The actual garden is about a full storey below the back of the house and the wooden stairs down from the upper part are in terminal decay. I'd get the whole lot replaced with metal stairs and fix the flags at the bottom so I could have a bbq spot. I'd also get an external electrical connection so I could keep a fridge under the stairs for summer outdoor food and drink.
Then to finish it off a new picnic bench for the bottom of the garden under the big tree and a canoe of some sort.

Maybe solar panels to reduce the monthly bills a bit.
Wanallo221@reddit
This is my thought. I have a bit saved for it. For the extra £10k I could get the top system I want. Our neighbor basically has the same set up and they spent nothing on electricity last year. The good summer paid for their winter costs. So broke even.
Inner-Floor-5827@reddit
Sorry to ask, but is all the energy harvested(don't know the proper word) in the summer, stored and then used during winter times when no sun is out? How does it work?
Educational_Worth906@reddit
Any you don’t need you can sell to the grid. We get paid for the exported units, but only about half what we would pay for units we pay for in the winter. Still worth doing though, the money paid goes towards our winter bills.
Inner-Floor-5827@reddit
So cool and efficient. I'm going to look into this more.
anonuk12345@reddit
I would have a good look. A lot of people who profit on this did so because they signed up at the right time. The government has ended the FIT scheme which paid out well and new rates set by suppliers are quite low comparatively. Around 3-10p/kwh depending on supplier and sign up time so much less than half import costs.
InvestigatorSad3154@reddit
no, i think you sell back to the grid during summer months while you enjoy almost free electricity. in winter, all the money you had saved during summer will compensate for the amount of you will have to pay when your solar panels generate low energy capacity. which may balance the equation to almost net zero. if you have battery system or EV, even better
Inner-Floor-5827@reddit
Ooh okay, I see. Thank you.
Velo_Rapide@reddit
Take it from me this ISN'T the way to go. Export rates are going to crash in the next few years and wholesale prices will come down. The grid is going to be much much better in the coming years and rooftop solar will only be good if you can use all the generation....
Much better to consider other energy efficiency measures...
globalfemme@reddit
Can you give some examples?
Beertown1@reddit
I recommend it, from now until at least September I'll be earning more than I'm paying (almost nothing) for electricity (though I appreciate it'll take a while to pay back the outlay). One gas and electric quarterly bill last summer was £53 (electric oven, heating not on) but for the same period I earned £59 in giving back to the grid!
Round_Grand_4716@reddit
Do you have a battery too? My monthly bills are around £60, but I had a cheque for around £1100 last year
Beertown1@reddit
I do, I have two. That's an awesome amount, nice one, do you only export?
Round_Grand_4716@reddit
Yes, they were here when I bought the house, but I'm thinking about batteries for longer term
Level_Engineer@reddit
How long is the payback period on it for your property?
I looked into it, our roof pitches east west and we have tall trees (not ours) to the west.
We were told it 'could' knock 50% off our bill (I can only charge the EV at night when home from work).
This resulted in a payback of about 8 years.
We would likely move before that and it doesn't add value to the home.
Vegetable_Leg_7034@reddit
This is also on my 'list of things', but being in Ireland we are disproportionately dependent on oil boilers for heating. So I'm leaning to heatpump first, then solar.
Obviously the outlay for the heatpump is going to be bigger, but it's the one fuel source I can't rely on due to global markets (yes I order when cheap and use that when demand is high).
FEMXIII@reddit
I would pay off of last of the loan I got for solar + batteries.
Finger in the air estimate says I’m saving about £200/m on average through the year with some significant export offsetting winter we are paying £100/m and ended winter about £500 in credit. Previously we would have been over £300/m
We have a massive east/west array of nearly 14kW and 10kWh of batteries.
Flat rate pay off is 8 years but we’re not including things like moving to an EV and hot water power diverting reducing the gas bill.
Having said all that, some people suggest a high interest savings and investment platform could perform better? If I had 20k in a stocks and shares isa for the last 10 years that might be worth £50k today
Visual-Meeting4402@reddit
Yes solar panels and a battery to cut down future bills. Tempted to go for it but if I had a 10k windfall and wasnt going to move it would be this
Chris-TT@reddit
100% came here to say this. Solar and batteries I could charge during the cheap night rate. Not having to worry as much about the constantly rising energy prices would be a godsend.

HGV training course

Onlygus@reddit
I may have good news for you. The government are running a "skills bootcamp" and the HGV licence is on the list. If you fit the criteria (over 19 and have a full car licence) it's up to 16 weeks training fully funded - you pay nothing. The trainers are massively incentivised to get you in to a job after too.
Stick your postcode in to this website and it will bring up anyone offering it near you:
https://nationalcareers.service.gov.uk/find-a-course/page?searchTerm=HGV&courseType=Skills%20Bootcamp
Here's the overview from the .gov website too:
https://www.gov.uk/training-hgv/skills-bootcamps
I'm doing a plastering course through the scheme at the moment and it's legit.
Now you can spend that imaginary 10 grand on something else

Theres different qualifiers for different training routes (HGV/trades/cyber). From what I can tell the HGV route only needs you to be over 19 and have a car licence.

Really makes me appreciate paying more tax in Scotland as we get all dentistry free until 26 y/o.
hellopo9@reddit
It's not the extra tax which pays for the longer free dentistry. Scotland gets roughly 15-20% more funding per person than down south for everything. That's not from the extra tax, it's from Westminster because they decide who gets how much.
Unitedthe_gees@reddit
Westminster controls spending and funding itself.
Scotland does what it can with the very limited ways to raise tax funds.
When folk like you talk like that it really reminds me of the lion with the chain around the unicorns neck.
hellopo9@reddit
So firstly the chain around the unicorns neck is the Scottish crown. The symbol of the chain was made by Scottish kings before union to symbolise that they could control unicorns.
Secondly while the Scottish parliament pays for it. They also get a lot more money per person from Westminster to spend despite producing less.
"In 2023/24, public spending per person in the UK as a whole was £12,958. In England, it was £12,625 (3% below the UK average). This compares with: • Northern Ireland: £15,371 (19% above the UK average) • Scotland: £14,759 (14% above the UK average) • Wales: £14,424 (11% above the UK average)." See here. Historically, Scotland has gotten more per person than both England and Wales. This is despite Scotland having a net fiscal deficit of 12% of GDP. The overall UK's is 4.8% of GDP, France is 6%, Italy is 3.4%.
Imagine cutting state spending on Scotland by 15-20% so it matches England. That much less for the NHS, for schools for public sector pay. Even just cutting spending down to Welsh levels would have a huge negative effect.
That's why Scotland has free university. They get more money and choose to spend it on things like free prescriptions and uni.
Westminster is terrible, but they treat and fund Scotland (and London) far better than everyone else. If you drive through the towns of Wales and northern England you'll see that.
As someone from Wales and now England, I kinda of support an independent Scotland for this reason. Lovely country and Edinburgh is stunning. But we often forget how differently we fund each place in the UK.

Don’t ever move to England the dentistry care is very expensive because NHS dentist are just about extinct.
weirdchili@reddit
They're still there, they're just scamming assholes who say they never have an NHS appointment so you're forced to pay private. A collegaue of mine said hes moving if thats the case and they suddenly found an appointment
No_Scheme5951@reddit
It's because they get paid the equivalent of about 11 pound per 'credit' by the NHS, and only a fixed number of these credits per procedure. So if you need a filling redone, they get (if I remember correctly), 3 credits, so 33 pound, for that they have a dentist, a nurse and a receptionist to pay, the materials used for the filling and everything else and of course overheads of their building. NHS patients cost them money for anything but the most basic and fast checkups.
Full-Suggestion-1320@reddit
My private dentist costs £59 per check up with a minor clean, a major clean with the hygienist costs £75.
3 years ago a major filling check up and clean came to just over £500 that also included a prescriptionfor antibiotics. I even had an anaesthetic numbing treatment before the anaesthetic injection. That fee also included a £50 sign up fee. Honestly my change to my private dentist has been the best £500 I have ever spent, I'm treated with dignity. Since the first expensive treatment I haven't needed any treatment. I get regular twice yearly appointments at £59 and haven't needed a major clean because I get a light clean included. It has been the best money I have ever spent.
Oh and the other tip is changed to a curaprox toothbrush and biomed toothpaste rather than all the ones made by Colgate Palmolive. That action alone has been life changing, no more overly sensitive teeth, less tartar and staining and I'm not damaging my enamel with the toothbrush.

Familiar-Donut1986@reddit

Even private isn’t too bad in Scotland, I went private because it’s so hard to find an NHS dentist here. My first appointment I had a treatment plan (I inherited bad teeth, had major depression as a teen and didn’t take care of myself) and needed A LOT of work done - fillings, root canals, teeth removed - had a lot done for around 1-2k (I can’t remember exactly), I’m lucky I have that money to “spare” but it certainly wasn’t as pricey as I thought it would be.
Ordinary_Weird_1890@reddit
Aren’t braces free for under 16s? Is there a reason you want to go private?
811545b2-4ff7-4041@reddit
Yep, free for under 18s, but there are long waiting lists to get it done.
Key_Produce2617@reddit
Also going through the same. Braces and everything that’s goes with it £5k private. Daughter is 11 and would have to wait until about 16 for the NHS ones. Too long to wait.
pibandpob@reddit
Try asking to be referred to an orthodontist further afield. My son was on a 3 year waiting list, so our dentist offered to refer us to an out of city orthodontist around 15 miles away, and he was seen within two months!
Atpsahfl@reddit
I think if you’re a tax payer and you end up having to go private due to the insane waiting times, then the government should reimburse you or at least subsidise it.
811545b2-4ff7-4041@reddit
The joke of it is that by paying private you get the exact same treatment, with the same inept admin - you just get the priority choice of appointments.
Key_Produce2617@reddit

BeginningImaginary11@reddit
Get nhs referral for braces! I refer 5-10 kids a week and they all get accepted.
811545b2-4ff7-4041@reddit
They might get accepted.. but how long is the waitlist ?
BeginningImaginary11@reddit
It depends solely on their window of puberty /development. Say if a 12 year old had lost all their baby teeth and a 14 year old still had theirs, they will prioritise the 12 year old here. Or vice Versa. The key is to have the referral done so they get in the system. Then once they are assessed they are placed a wait list until their growth indicates suitability. They won’t let them miss the window(but I tell parents to make sure they show to every appt and follow up every 6 months if they haven’t heard)
JabbaTheHuttsCock@reddit
My daughter waited 5 months from referral? Live just outside of Liverpool.
Iasc123@reddit
It's a outrage that you cannot find an NHS dentist for your kids. Kids and pensioners should have the priority with NHS dental. Most places are probably filled with people who don't even use their service - I wouldn't be surprised if I'm still registered at my NHS dentist from when I was a kid..

Take it straight off the mortgage.
Boring but sensible.
InterestingSubject75@reddit
Amen friend, paid off my mortgage last month. Could I have invested the money? Sure, but would it have a guaranteed interest saving and give me the mortgage free feeling? Nope. Boring but ever so sensible and satisfying
specofdust@reddit
Boring but probably only sensible if you have a truly horrendous mortgage rate. Average returns on the stockmarket are far higher than most mortgages.
BobBobBobBobBobDave@reddit
For a lot of people with large mortgage monthly payments, though, reducing your mortgage debt will give you more left in your bank account each month, and reduce the total amount you pay in interest over time. That is of more immediate appeal to a lot of people than long term stock market investment.
strolls@reddit
What are you planning to retire on?
Most workplace pensions are of the defined contributions type - i.e. a big bundle of stockmarket investments.
If you could borrow £100,000 from the bank at 4% and get a guaranteed 7% by investing it then everyone should be doing that because you pay £4000 a year in mortgage interest, pocket £7000 of returns from your investments and that's a free £3000 a year for doing nothing. In reality, you don't get fixed returns from investing but, over longer periods, the returns do indeed average out higher.
That's why most people should aim to pay off their mortgage around the time they'll have enough investments (in the pension and S&S ISA) to retire on. Investing earlier gets you more of the investment returns, because you're getting them for longer.
InterestingSubject75@reddit
I fully understand, but I have a good work pension already, and as you say investment returns aren't guaranteed - but interest saving and the additional 2k now in my bank every month was guaranteed do I chose that option
strolls@reddit
If you'll forgive me, that's not really a meaningful thing to say. It's like saying "I have enough money already". Either you have enough money that you can quit work, or you don't.
Overpaying your mortgage vs investing is simply a matter of whether you want more money or less.
I post on the personal finance sub daily, and I try to be careful about the language I use when talking about this stuff - I absolutely didn't say "investment returns aren't guaranteed". It's not sticky false to say that, but also it's not the kind of thing that I would say.
If you have £10,000 and you have the choice between using it to overpay your mortgage or investing it in a tracker of a world stockmarket index (e.g. MSCI World or ACWI) then you're going to have more money and be more financially secure in 10 or 20 years' time if you make the stockmarket investment.
The way "investment returns aren't guaranteed" is on a mark to market basis - if you buy a tracker fund invested in the world's largest 1000 companies then you don't know what that'll be worth next year or the year after.
The world in which you're "better off" in 20 years' time by using that £10,000 to overpay the mortgage? It means that the whole global financial system has collapsed and you're having to defend your "paid off" house from roving brigands.
I'm not going to "guarantee" that collateralised mortgage bonds won't outperform the stockmarket for 10 or 20 years, but you do not want to live in that world. We would not have the gadgets and the comforts that we have today; I doubt you'd be able to rely on having food or electricity.
InterestingSubject75@reddit
Friend, I have an employment pension that will feed me well in retirement for as long as I live, unless the world collapses before I get there. In which case I'd have bigger problems.
I now have minimal outgoings, I'm no longer too concerned about oil and gas prices, my child will always have a paid off roof over their head, and my allotment will demand more of my attention going forward as I reduce my working hours.
You might know everything there is to know about the stock market, and you may think I'm doing it all wrong. And sure I may have made more money someday by doing it differently. But as far as I am concerned, money can't buy the peace I feel right now, and I'm happy with that.
ChanceHovercraft1754@reddit
If you could borrow 100,000 from the bank and guarantee 7% returns
The interest rate from bank would be 7.5%
They aren't stoopid, mortgage rates are set so that the bank gets a good return compared to other investment options.
International_Ad_691@reddit
Yeh I agree but I also love the psychological benefit of not having to pay a mortgage its got to be satisfying even though not as financially beneficial
stickyjam@reddit
I think an index fund of a good chunk of your mortgage value provides similar comfort, at least once you've been in it a few years. The fund has massively outperformed any house overpayments over the past 4-5 years.

I would pay the get dental implants. Due to illness I lost a lot of my teeth very early (40's), so now I only 5 left and poorly fitting dentures (they are just new but the dentist insisted I would get used to them...

I need a new (used... very very used) car and combined with what I have at the minute I could get something functional that will last 7-8 years if looked after.
Then a telehandler licence. I will get a better daily rate in my job.
Then a holiday for myself alone in said new but used car. I can get by extremely cheap on the road as long as sleep and fuel is sorted. I've been working 60 hour weeks for months and I am busted.

I can. Was referred to gynae in January following an MRI, and my appointment to see them is in July. After that onto the wait list for for surgery, which some ladies have been waiting 1-2 years.

That’s mad!!! Women’s health is so awful.
Keep pushing - it took me 9 months to get my endo surgery on the NHS so it must be luck of the draw but it was absolutely life changing.
Salty_Nothing5466@reddit
I first went to the GP with symptoms in 2011. Diagnosed in 2018, second surgery 2021 to remove “mild endo”. Symptoms persisted. Had a lap in October last year and was told I was fine. Sought a second opinion and had another surgery in February this year with a specialist after 15 years from initial symptoms - my bowels were adhered to my pelvis, my uterus was stuck to my bowels, it was in my rectum, behind my ovary & on my bladder. Fairly sure if it had been properly picked up in any of my prior ones it wouldn’t have ended up so severe! Womens health is a disgrace

Why do dental professionals recommend the CS 5460? Two words: Gentle and Effective. The ultra-fine, Curen® filaments (bristles to you and I) are densely packed on the brush head to give exceptional cleaning power that literally polishes your teeth to perfection. No scrubbing here!
Did you know that a hard brush can cause damage to your teeth and gums? Curaprox toothbrushes not only prevent brushing damage but also break up and remove daily plaque perfectly, polishing it away to create a perfectly gorgeous smile you can see and feel.
Gentle yet highly effective brush action thanks to our unique Curen®-filaments Polishing teeth to perfection due to the sheer number of filaments on each and every Curaprox toothbrush A slightly angled head, that's no accident, it's engineered this way to ensure no tooth is unbrushed. Finally, an octagonal handle helps users to brush at the correct angle and prevents over-gripping.

When I was 23, I did get 10k from a very unexpected inheritance from my long-dead grandad who died when I was very young. I spent it on learning to drive (and I passed my test!), doing a CELTA course, doing a level 3 qualification related to work, and then I spent 3 months living in Spain renting a flat with a friend and 3 months living in rural Nicaragua volunteering with a local community. The travels were life-enhancing and I also learned very good Spanish.
Nowadays, the thought of 10k makes me think it's not really very much money.... not even 1/5th of a house deposit in Bristol realistically, definitely not a flat deposit, barely a shared ownership deposit. So what would I spend it on? A third on travels, a third on a cheap but not knackered van, and a third floating me til the end of Masters degree!
It's fun to dream 😆

10k isn't much in the grand scheme of things. If I have to spend it though, I would spend £1000 on the garden. So an outdoor trunk, some play equipment and the rest on pots and plants.
Next I'm buying high thread count bed sheets and replacing the lot, as our newest set will be 10 years old come summer. Then I'll replace the towels and also get a new picnic blanket.
New luggage and a week in a nice cottage in Wales in August so we can go scatter my MILs ashes puts me with £5k left.

Hmmmm. A pretty tame response, I lost a bunch of weight 7 years or so ago and have quite a lot of loose skin, most notably around my stomach. I am fortunate enough to be debt free (bar a mortgage)
£10k that had to be blown, I'd probably look at buying some vintage comics for my collection. Not a life improvement in the classic sense, but I would feel pretty good with a few golden age Batman comics I would have no chance of owning if it wasn't for the free money.

Escorts to relieve my sexual urges and I'd love to just jump in the car and head over to Europe. Drive their roads, see their sights, speak with their people and just grow as a person and come back smiling with some stories to tell!

If I owned the house I live in, I'd change out the windows, since they all need replacing. If there was money left over, I'd get the heat pump replaced.
If we're going based on how things are right now, I'd get a new cooker and fridge (fridge would be a two-door fridge/freezer type deal, allowing me to use the upstairs freezer for 'use' items and the ancient chest freezer for longer term 'storage' items). I'd get a free-standing variable height cable training machine, for my general physio and rehab stuff, and a decent indoor treadmill for both me and my wife, so maybe she'd be able to get some exercise in too (we both have health issues, hers are much more severe than mine). There'd probably be about half the money left after all that, so I'd replace the sofa, since ours is on its very last legs, and that'd massively help my wife's back pains.
I'd prepay a cleaner or a cleaning service for 6 months to a year (depending on price), and I would also make a point of buying the motorised cleaning brushes I've had my eye on for the last two hours.
I would buy a leaf blower, or some other solution I could use to help me deal with all the detritus we get in our garden (we get about 40% knocked off our rent as long as I keep the garden halfway tended, but with my neck and back going the way they're going, I could be doing without raking all the pine needles and pine cones and shit).
At this stage, there'd probably be about 1k remaining... Replace the ancient chest freezer, just to make sure it won't burn the house down one day. New winter coat for me, since mine has holes. New walking/daily use shoes for me, since I bought mine in 2018 or something. Place an order for firewood for next winter for the rest - even if it's only a couple of bags, better to use up the money.
By the way, just in case people are here thinking I'm Mr. Moneybags because I have a garden and wood stoves and shit - my wife and I live out in the boonies in Norway. Large gardens covered in pine needles and wood-burning stoves are the rule, rather than the exception :P

We're looking into an electric cargo trike. We don't drive and don't want to. But it would be nice to have a vehicle of some sort for shopping and transporting things.
And built in air conditioning with heat pump. I have big issues with heat so without air con I'm basically out of commission all summer. Those tube out the window guys aren't great for efficiency or convenience.
Also looking into a new wheelchair with power assist. Those things are EXPENSIVE. Probably not as relatable of an option but right now we're debating saving up for either that or a trike. I'm disabled in a way where it's more the standing that's the problem so I think I could use a trike, but can't walk very far and use a wheelchair. A cargo trike could carry my current wheelchair for me to use when I'm not on the trike. Probably can't really take a cargo trike on a train so new wheelchair with power assist would allow me to go more places, but carry less.
VincentVan_Dough@reddit
Convert the 2 bedrooms on our top floor into a main suite with en-suite. £10k should cover re-doing the bathroom (tiling and furniture, no changes to layout/plumbing), making good walls after taking down the dividing non load bearing wall, new flooring and built-in wardrobes.

I’d use the first 5 grand to clear my crippling debt, then use at least 1,000 to get myself trained for driving and put it towards a car, and use the rest to make my house suitable so I can start to fight for custody of my son, of course it wouldn’t take 4 grand to sort out my house, that would cost 1,000 at the most, so I’d put the rest towards my sons saving for when he turns 18, as I’m adamant that he will have a far better life than I have.
