What do you miss most about life in the UK 10–15 years ago?

I miss being part of the EU - being able to connect and feel a big part of something really positive - the UK feels so tiny, shrunken and bitter now.

Has anyone managed to get over their fear / anxiety of public speaking? How?

Dr-Ben701@reddit

I used to be anxious - generally ok now - (1) prepare prepare prepare know your stuff inside out (2) practice take every opportunity to do a presentation and see if you can video yourself - you’re likely better than you thought with room for improvement (3) reinterpret your anxiety as excitement- because no matter how comfortable you are - speaking in front of others is always challenging. (4) breath deeply slowly and clench hold and release your stomach muscles to release the stress - practice makes perfect - good luck

Would/should you press the stop button on a bus if you see someone running for it?

A friends wife is divorcing him.. they have kids.. he’s just given up and sacked them all off. Don’t know what advice to give him?

Posted by PuzzleheadedCarob921@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 189 comments

Dr-Ben701@reddit

Tell him to get his act together - sober up - go to AA - see a therapist - look after his health - people drink for a reason / you can’t fix it - he has to take responsibility- sounds like he using you as an emotional dump rather than taking responsibility - so keep being clear about what he needs to do in a kind unambiguous manner. Whether he gets back with her or not he still needs to do these things to fix himself.

Why do (some) parents think they know better than their more experienced / knowledgeable kids?

Dr-Ben701@reddit

Try blinding them with science - give a full unfiltered detailed technical explanation for some of your decisions - they also sound a little bullying - they only response to that is to match their rudeness by telling them their (specified) behaviour is unacceptable.

Does this sound like Im being managed out?

Posted by vivteatro@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 7 comments

Dr-Ben701@reddit

You clearly have difficulties managing your own workload - use the reduced pressure to re-establish yourself and get back into a regular routine and reflect on work balance, becoming more effective at delegation and teamwork. If u are competent and able a new opportunity will come along - all companies are short of good people.

I'm a minor and I want to convince my dad the UK is okay for me to travel alone. How?

16 year old son has started setting goals but never starts working towards them. Does a good parent force them to start?

Posted by PaddedValls@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 50 comments

Dr-Ben701@reddit

You haven’t taught him how to problem solve correctly - just how to imagine instantly unachievable objectives. (Which is very demoralising.) The key is to be able to break things down into small achievable tasks - learning to run look at the NHS couch to 5k app And how the hell will he know how to approach a guitar without lessons???!!! It is really difficult to tune a guitar if you don’t know how.

What loose & comfortable clothing that can be thrown in the dryer are the guys here wearing around the house?

Would you call the police on an old persons driving?

Dr-Ben701@reddit

Sentimentality doesn’t bring back the dead - driving is not all he has - he has his freedom (not in prison for reckless driving) he has his clear conscience (not killed or maimed someone by accident.) stop being sentimental make the call.

What shaving items are best for teenage sons first shave?

Dr-Ben701@reddit

For teenagers a simple electric shaver - minimises cuts and mess - later on he can experiment with wet shaving. In terms of options for electric shaver this is what perplexity said: A Braun Series 3 ProSkin or a Philips Norelco/Philips Series 3000–style rotary shaver are usually the best first electric shavers for a teenager, depending on whether you prioritise comfort and safety (rotary) or a slightly closer shave (foil).[1][2][3] ## Key recommendations - **Braun Series 3 ProSkin (e.g. 3040s)** – Very good beginner/teen shaver: easy to use, gentle foil head, works well on daily or every‑other‑day growth, and reasonably priced.[3][1] - Philips Series 3000 rotary – Frequently recommended as a “first shaver for a teenager”: forgiving technique, pivoting heads, easy to clean, good value.[2][4] - Philips Norelco OneBlade / OneBlade 360 – Extremely gentle, great for peach fuzz or early, patchy beards; also good if they mainly want to tidy edges and light stubble rather than be perfectly clean‑shaven.[5][1] ## What to prioritise for a teen - Skin friendliness and safety over ultra‑close shaves, as teenage skin is often more sensitive and acne‑prone.[6][7][5] - Wet‑and‑dry use, so they can shave in the shower or with gel if they prefer, which can reduce irritation.[1][5] - Simple cleaning and robust build, to keep the routine easy and encourage consistent use.[8][1] ## When to consider spending more - If the teen already has a heavier beard or very sensitive skin, a mid‑range model like Braun Series 5/8 or a Philips Series 7000/9000 (both designed with extra skin‑comfort features) can be worthwhile; they are smoother and more powerful but cost more.[7][9][10][5] Would this be for a younger teen just starting to get light facial hair, or an older teen with a denser beard? Dr-Ben701@reddit

Think about the cost of the event - so at least the cost of them having you there - you don’t want them to start their married life poor - consider shopping vouchers if you know they like a specific store but don’t guess.

John Lewis - put a 2 foot scratch in newly painted front door - left grooves in the wood flooring when delivering fridge and said it wasn’t them - despite timed photographic evidence - they’ve lost at least £20k of custom plus everyone I tell every time I have the opportunity…

Would it be stupid to have a fire extinguisher or blanket in the kitchen?

Posted by Spicy_Wimp@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 160 comments

Dr-Ben701@reddit

You’d be stupid not to - 5 years ago I was making apple tartin - flambé the calvados (following instructions of teacher at chef school we didn’t think that domestic extractor fans might be more susceptible to fire WRONG…!!) anyway a tornado of flame went into my extractor hood seating it on fire - I now have a burning pan and an extractor fan pumping flame and smoke into the kitchen - thankfully got given a power extinguisher few years earlier and in two minutes had put the fire out (yes it was a MESS) - if I’d had to wait till the fire brigade came my whole kitchen would have been toast and possibly the house - shortly after I bought two fire blankets a CO2 extinguisher and a foam extinguisher - you would be STUPID not to have an extinguisher in ready reach of your kitchen - just DON’T USE WATER BASED EXTINGUISHER ON OIL CHIP PAN FIRES! Enjoy living in your own it’s fun :-)

The key is validation and coaching - it’s ok to feel bad and to struggle (validate the painful feelings) now let’s sit with this difficult situation and have a think about how you can solve it? ( discuss and encourage them to try options.) find tasks and challenges they can do e.g learning to swim and sit with them as they struggle. Don’t jump in and solve and don’t tell them painful feelings are bad model having painful feelings and it’s ok.
