The bigger problem is where to put them when they don't charge. This is already becoming an issue. Now, think Los Angeles, when a million tons of spent battery packs start to show up. Where do we recycle them? Multiply that by the number of cities in the US, Europe, and Asial. I don't even have a place to recycle batteries now...so they go into the landfill. As a result, I don't buy much that uses batteries, and even then, only re-chargeable products.

Out of curiosity, how could it possibly be a government function? The government doesn't even bring enough in taxes to fund the handout-based government programs that currently exist. Adding tremendous insurance burdens into the mix would collapse everything twice as fast as it's currently falling. Making it a government function doesn't make economic sense.

Thanks, I hate it.

Is neo-ruralism a thing in the USA ?

I moved from a small city to a very rural area (closest town is population 1365) at retirement. I don't see any major influx of migrants, not many people live here. I don't like crowds, and driving with someone on my tail makes me nervous. I will never move closer to people again, but I realy like my neighbors. We have the same in common- I haven't met them either.

I know this sub mostly posts about climate change, but climate change aside, we are still so screwed and it's terrifying.

UBI = Welfare without all the 'safeguards' preventing abuse. Those safeguards didn't work well regardless, and the welfare system ended up twice as large in bureaucracy due to agencies having to add fraud detection systems and investigators. Of course, "this time, it's different", lol.

Amazingly, this outcome is obvious to anyone with a fundamental understanding of economics. UBI isn't even a good *idea*, let alone an implementation. Welfare doesn't work. Never has. Never will.

It's easy. We always die, whether we're in a good place or not. Always has been that way. Modern technology can't stop a progression that the earth will go through, but it does make it easier to cope with. People have had to go though this same process for tens of thousands of years. We're lucky we weren't born in the era that had people walking over ice bridges to the new world. That happened, and they had no internet, which made the journey easier for them. But they had to watch for giant bears and cats; they were the menu at the local drive-through. We are the only generation that can ride the wave to all of our inevitable deaths in relative comfort. Yet, we still bitch. Isn't that special.

Ask yourself: is it better to ride out 'collapse' in a comfortable, and well-engineered lifestyle in a good area, or be struggling in retail jobs or working as a busboy at some pancake house? Take a break from this sub, and go to some place mentally that encourages and celebrates life, not death. I am an engineer, just happen to be retired. You sound like you have the qualities that make a great engineer. I can tell you from experience that once you get your feet on the ground (struggle to find your niche) in that field, opportunities will arise that you can't imagine. WFH wasn't an option in my specialty, and I am thankful for that. You wouldn't believe where I have traveled and the things I got to experience because of this career.

It's fine to suggest solutions to problems. In fact, solutions are desperately needed. On the other hand, to suggest an even bigger problem *as a solution* to another problem is DAFt. Have a tooth ache? Simple. Remove all your teeth, you'll never have a toothache again. Feet hurt? No problem. Have them amputated. Problem solved. People so stupid they can't realize what problems their 'solution' will cause need to be ignored.

Same here in northern mich. Honey bees are very active. We have been planting more and more bee-friendly plants, and have left our 10 acres to bloom with natural flora (no mowing). Everything is buzzing; even the ants seem to be cooperating, but eating a lot of the natural weeds. The only weeds we eradicate (by manually pulling them), are the invasive types. We were going to thin some of the milkweed that is spreading, but the moment we went into the largest patch, we noticed that *lots* of kinds of butterflies were there. We walked away.

Yep. It lies to people with a straight 'screen' face. Two lawyers in a NY court case last week were lambasted for presenting false evidence they presented in court. They used 'evidence' (that ChatGPT *made up*) in court; unfortunately for them, it was caught by the judge. Yep; AI is getting as good about lying to others as people are. Artificial stupidity is now so good that it can't be discerned by people with *natural* stupidity. https://apnews.com/article/artificial-intelligence-chatgpt-courts-e15023d7e6fdf4f099aa122437dbb59b
