Why are hotels in the UK so expensive?

Genuinely can’t remember last time I had a proper holiday in the UK visited agee cities for concerts sns friends but the price of staying in place like London, the Lake district and Cornwall is just so ridiculous that it makes more sane to go to Portugal and Greece.

I was surprised that in even some of the more expensive/ comparable European countries it was still cheaper than the UK spent less when visiting Germany and the Netherlands than in many parts of the UK.

To be honest at your age I would’ve enjoyed the house to myself almost as much as family holiday. If you’re neighbours aren’t too uptight and you don’t let it get too crazy I’d be having a big house party

I’ve noticed many of them actually seem to be relatively well off I know getting car on finance is probably easier than it should be but banks aren’t exactly giving mortgages on new builds to anyone and the constant holidays to Spain and Turkey must add up.

To add onto something similar there’s a nice suburb where I live that’s in a different council to the main city council and some people from there love to bring up they’re of the “horrid” city and they’re own community despite the fact they’re a 15 min bus form the city centre and vast majority of the jobs and economy is related to being next to a big city. Their council plays into it too new housing estates can’t use street when naming roads because street is apparently too city like.

I’ve always been confused about people saying we’re a tiny island not really we’re in the top 25 globally for population and a major economy and even geographically the UK is in the middle for land area.

Danielharris1260@reddit

I’ve noticed this a lot of sarcastic rude replies to genuine questions yeah I get it’s somewhat a part of our humour but we do need to remember it’s mostly foreigners asking these questions and they simply don’t really get our humour and think we’re just being unnecessarily rude.

In your opinion, what's the biggest waste of money you see people purchase all the time?

Danielharris1260@reddit

I disagree it does appeal to people who just want convenience rather than ownership. Not everyone is interested in owning car. A lot of drivers just want a nice, reliable, modern car that gets them from A to B comfortably without loads of hassle. Some people genuinely just cannot be bothered with dealing with an ageing car, unexpected repair bills, constantly taking it to garages, trying to sell it privately later, or worrying about long-term reliability. They just want something easy to live with, under warranty, with predictable monthly costs, and then swap it out every few years and move on. As long as someone can comfortably afford it and isn’t spending a ridiculous portion of there salary on it, I don’t really see why that’s considered “madness”.

Is there a redeeming quality to the current state of HS2?

Danielharris1260@reddit

It is is shame how it all went I guess you could say the ridiculous price of it has made people very weary and angry with the UK planning process and has caused there to be more effort to streamline it. Big chunk of the extra cost came from unnecessary tunnels and consultations.

Gap insurance, is it worth it?

I think the issue that some finance companies take the absolute piss with interest and the price would just spiral out of control for insurance companies which would mean insurance prices spiral even more out of control for us.

I have thought it was kind ridiculous they didn’t pay the remaining balance on finance for write off cars maybe it’s because some finance companies take the piss a bit with the interest but still insurance isn’t exactly cheap.

Absolutely do it I had a write off with my car on finance non fault insurance paid out current value of my car back the finance company but due to the interest I still owed my finance company £1500 and I didn’t have car.

They that a lot of the people even some who are otherwise very much progressive speak about the aboriginal people made me feel very uncomfortable.

Why do people think it’s ok to take videos/photos of random people?

Posted by Lower_Canary5713@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 166 comments

Danielharris1260@reddit

Being in the background of video or photo isn’t the same as someone directly filming and as for street photographers if you taking a photo that someone in as one of the main focuses without their permission and on top of that you’re monetising from that it is completely wrong and people should have the right to oppose that.

I think we should take the approach Germany has where you can actually trusted photos/videos of you to be removed and social media companies have to comply or face fines. I think being in the background of a video is fine but when someone is filming you directly I think you should have the right to object.

Why did Wireless Festival organisers cancelled the whole festival because of losing Kanye?

Posted by bkdeamon@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 230 comments

Danielharris1260@reddit

I think people are underestimating how difficult it actually is to replace a headliner this late, especially for something like Wireless. We’re talking about April for a July festival that might sound like a decent gap, but for A-list artists, their schedules are locked in months (sometimes over a year) in advance. It’s not just about finding someone “available” either they need to be free, willing to do it, and the festival has to be able to afford them at short notice, which usually means a higher fee which I’m sure if not helped but the fact they lost many of their sponsors. On top of that, these artists don’t just show up there’s a whole production behind them. Crews, staging, rehearsals, logistics, sometimes even visa and travel arrangements. That all takes time to organise properly. And then there’s the audience expectation. People are paying £300–£400+ for the weekend. Whether you like Kanye or not, he’s a massive global name. Replacing him with someone smaller even a big UK artist would feel like a downgrade to a lot of people, especially if it’s someone they could see for a lot cheaper on a normal tour in a place like Sheffield or Bristol.

I will say regardless of your opinion on the ban the Wireless organisers were very bold having him headline and thinking it wouldn’t cause that controversy and not even having a back not sure what they were thinking .

Are there any laws against sleeping in your car while on a roadtrip?

I had a mate get done for being drunk in charge of a vehicle when he wasn’t even planning to drive at all. We were at my house and he was clearly staying over (phone, wallet, sleeping stuff all inside etc). At one point he went outside just to grab his headphones from his car. Police had been called to a nearby party because it got a bit loud, saw him going towards his car with his keys, breathalysed him and that was enough. He still got charged even though it was pretty obvious he wasn’t about to drive anywhere.

Car front bumper stolen in airport carpark, what to do?

Danielharris1260@reddit

Birmingham is somewhere I try to avoid driving to if I can. I’ve got family there so I do have to go sometimes, but honestly the driving is wildloads of speeding and really aggressive behaviour. The parking situation is just as bad too. Driving through some of the residential streets was something else, with double-parked cars everywhere, a lot of them high-end like BMWs and Mercedes, outside houses you wouldn’t exactly associate with that kind of money. None of my cousins under 22 could get insurance for under £6k, and after seeing how people drive there, I can’t say I’m surprised.

I do find is kinda ridiculous when driving down a couple of the new build estates near me and the roads are somehow more narrow and windy than some of the victorian streets near me. I would’ve thought they’d take into consideration there’s more cars when building them but I guess not. Also the fact they’re not pedestrian or public transport friendly makes you wonder how is it friendly for.

I’ll be honest, I was surprised by how much I was questioned as a British tourist that’s generally a very low-risk category for US immigration. If that’s the experience for people from “safe” countries, it really makes you wonder how travellers from countries the US sees as higher-risk are treated. It’s especially odd when you consider the imbalance: the UK lets Americans in almost entirely through e-gates with minimal/no questioning , while we still have to go through ESTA which asks a lot more questions than the ETA Americans need and face detailed interviews entering the US.
