How many of you would consider yourselves addicted to your phones/social media?

Crusty8@reddit

I'm trying to kick the fb and ig habit. I set up timers for both but would end up just blowing past them and hitting ignore. I had to delete the IG app and deactivate fb to get it under control.

Did your parents regularly attend your sporting events?

Crusty8@reddit

Yes. My parents came to many of my games. They would attend my brother's games as well. Whole summer weekends would be taken up by my softball tournaments and often my extended family would come out as well.

My neighbor is about 25 years younger than me likes to mow her lawn in shorts and a tank top. Meanwhile my 55+ self is wearing a wide brimmed hat, sleeves, neck protection and sunblock on my face.

Grab a People magazine or Star or Us and read to her. Dish some gossip and check out the beautiful gowns, handsome men or whatever. Check out a nice photo book from your library and go through the photos together and tell some stories. They don't have to be true. Just entertaining.

Sad Christmas

I understand the emotions. Now is the time to get your mom's affairs in order. Get her passwords to all her accounts, both email and any banking accounts, and keep an eye on them. Scammers come for everyone and people your mom's age and cognitive health will fall for their con. Have your mom tested for a UTI. UTIs are very common in women and confusion is one of the symptoms. I've been through this.

Generational junk dumping

Crusty8@reddit

Omg so much this. Don't throw away any photos. Find out who they are and scan them in and toss them on a google drive or something. You may not care about who they are but you may later. Or one of your kids or siblings or some other relative may get into it. Even if you can't find out who they are, a local historical society may want them. I didn't care at all about my family history until I started wondering and digging into it a couple of years ago. Now I'm obsessed and have been filling in our family tree back to when they came over on the boat into the early 1900s.

What adult hobby did you pick up that your teenage self would've mocked relentlessly?

Crusty8@reddit

You stay up until 9:30? Wow. Hard charger. Geneology. A few years ago I couldn't care less about family history. But someone started asking questions about my uncle and I did some digging. I started to uncover all kinds of cool stuff like manifests when my relatives came over on the boat, etc. My mom was into it for years, well before everything was online, so she wrote letters, checked microfiche, and found old church records. I found her ancestry.com account and was able to take control of it. (My niece has access to her email so we changed the password and profile info.) My mom was in a memory care facility for a few years before she passed away and we were able to talk a little about old long forgotten relatives.

Was anyone else’s parents obsessed with going to the cemetery?

Posted by Amazing-Butterfly-65@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 311 comments

Crusty8@reddit

My post retirement project is walking through cemeteries and taking photos of headstones of people who want it for their family tree. It gets me outside and keeps me active. Sometimes I have to do some research to be able to find the graves and when I do and post the photos for people it's pretty cool.

Hill Street Blues. There was one episode that was particularly sad and I was teary. When my dad and I looked at each other he was also teary. We sat on the couch when it was over and just hugged.

Ok now is the time to get ducks in a row. Get all her passwords for bank accounts, email, etc. Check her email often because she's very susceptible to scammers. My niece and sister had my mom's passwords and my niece checked for spam and deleted stuff my mom didn't need to know about. My sister kept an eye on my mom's finances the whole time from before official diagnosis to the end. Time to have the tough discussion about what she would like for her funeral. Doesn't mean she's going to die in a year but she should have a say in this. My dad was difficult when he died because we really weren't sure what to do but my mom had everything planned so once she passed we went to the funeral home to do a few things and that was it. Everything else was taken care of. Find a support group in your area. Every person who has this disease goes through different changes and different timelines. Stay in the moment with her. You'll find yourself anticipating what comes next but hold on to where you are right at this time. Meet her where she's at. Tough times are coming but in the meantime enjoy every sunset, every ice cream, every beach vacation. It's ok to cry about this.

Seven years ago today, on August 10th, 2018, a 28-year-old ground service agent named Richard Russell stole a Horizon Air Bombardier Q400 (N449QX) from Sea-Tac, taking it for a joyride over Puget Sound and executing a barrel roll before nosing down into Ketron Island and calling it a night.

If possible get access to her bank and email accounts. My family had access to everything of my mom's and it helped her from getting scammed. My niece would go through my mom's email every day before she saw it and would delete the phishing emails. Get powers of attorney now. My mom died six months ago and having her affairs in order including her funeral plans helped a lot.

Would it be inappropriate to pass my mom’s doctor a note prior to her appointment?

Posted by stray_girl@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 298 comments

Crusty8@reddit

Please get in touch with her doctor and let them know what's going on. Also talk to your mom about getting access to her email accounts and bank accounts. Old people get scammed all the time and if she's having cognitive issues, she's ripe for the picking. Get her affairs in order now before the disease progresses too far and she can't or won't make any decisions. My mother passed away a few months ago from advanced alz. Someone in my family had access to all her accounts and was able to monitor her bank and credit cards, plus delete any email schemes before she saw them.

I have a half sleeve tattoo that I want to protect so I slather it on every day. When I'm out cutting the lawn, I'm completely covered head to toe. Hat, gardening long sleeves, neck gator, long pants and extra sunscreen on my face. I use mineral sunscreen so I look like a corpse. I don't care. I used to live in a very sunny place and had my share of sunburns and how awful I felt.

I openly cried when I heard sinead oconnor passed away. I saw her in concert but I'm sure I didn't truly appreciate her greatness. Now my heart sinks a little when I hear one of her songs. She was the voice of my high school and college days. We just saw Heart in concert because both Ann and Nancy are in their 70s and with Ann's recent health problems who knows how much longer they will be touring. They were still rocking!

A few on fb. I joined the military in the early 90s and was away from home until this past year. I'm now within 30 minutes of my hometown but have no desire to meet up with anyone or attend a class reunion. I see photos of past reunions on fb and think, yep they look like the same people that ignored me during hs. They won't remember me and I'd have to keep reintroducing myself.
