Where can I go to use a computer for free? (other than libraries)

Posted by Eastern-Stuff6480@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 32 comments

Chungaroo22@reddit

Do you own a computer and looking for somewhere to go use it or are you looking for somewhere to go use a computer you don’t own? For the former I’d say cafes, some pubs, not totally free as you’d need to buy a drink. For the latter is pretty much the library and maybe an Apple Store, though they’ll probably ask you to leave if you take the piss.

How unsafe are the roads for cyclists?

Posted by pinkestpenny@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 80 comments

Chungaroo22@reddit

I love road cycling, but there is a legitimate risk. Cars are dangerous, drivers are distracted and impatient and some of our roads can be dangerous for cycling even when everyone on them is following the rules to the letter. A few bits of advice; 1. If you're able to, get yourself an indoor training setup - Something like a Wahoo Kickr paired with Zwift or MyWhoosh. Personally I find these way more engaging than doing a loop around a track simply because of the 'video-gamey' element and getting to follow structured training or ride with other people. You'll probably want this for winter training anyway at some point. 2. Find a local triathlon or cycling group for actual riding outside - There's real safety in numbers, plus you'll be led by experienced cyclists who know safe and quiet routes and while be doing their utmost to ensure the safety of the group. Some of my hairiest cycling moments have come from being in a new area and not knowing where to avoid. These usually go out on the weekend, so coincide nicely with the long ride, doing the smaller training sessions indoors or on a track don't seem too bad. 3. If you're not already doing so, learning to drive can help your cycling on the road immensely. You learn the theory, which is important, I see waaay too many e-scooter riders and cyclists in my city who clearly don't know what they're supposed to be doing or things like how to use a roundabout. Also you'll get to see things from the drivers perspective, this can teach you stuff like where blindspots are, how drivers approach junctions etc. Obviously Triathlon and getting your licence are both super hard on your wallet, but you can grab one of the free theory test apps which will get you a bit of knowledge. 4. Avoid overconfidence or getting annoyed - When you do graduate to cycling on the road, it's only a matter of time before you encounter and angry driver. 99% of times this is just a bit of an annoyance, they pass a bit close and it's over in seconds. But in my view it's always better not to escalate of go looking for trouble for your own safety. There are many situations where you'll be in the right, or have priority, but that won't help you if you come to blows with their car. 5. Once you've had a bit of experience on the road, there are things that can help as small additions to decrease your risk. Stuff like a Varia radar on the back of your bike, maybe a camera on the front. I'd also generally always go out with some sort of light, even when it's fairly bright out, to help you stand out. 6. If you do go out on your own, use stuff like Strava heatmaps, Komoot, or the NCN maps to find the quiet, bike safe routes.

When did the evolution of English bank holidays?

Posted by Spottyjamie@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 6 comments

Chungaroo22@reddit

Barring Christmas Day and Easter Sunday, There's no restriction for bank holidays except for banks, Sunday trading laws don't apply. So they'll just do whatever's best for our lord and saviour "The bottom line". For smaller shops there's no restrictions at all. There's most likely no benefit in opening earlier, as most customers can shop a bit later. For smaller businesses, the owners are probably quite keen on having some well earned rest themselves and for the big supermarkets, they probably realise that the public perception of opening 6-10 on a bank holiday probably isn't worth the additional revenue, but it'll likely creep up as years go by.

I get that, but wouldn’t it be nicer if everyone who could did? Or used alternative transport? Cheaper fuel, quieter roads, resulting in less damage to the roads, more parking spaces etc..

Manchester, I live in Bristol and love my home but it’d be a strong second choice. Similar cool vibes, very friendly people and a bit flatter. Also a massive fan of Edinburgh, Brighton and Belfast. All very interesting cities that would feel like home. Didn’t think too much of Glasgow tbh, but I think I’d just need to have more time there and explore a bit more.

I think a good mix or hybrid approach is good for some people, like myself. I get way more done and generally feel more comfortable at home but I absolutely do need to go in to an office or coworking space a once or twice a week to keep my mental health in check. Then there are people like my partner who immediately get distracted bored and sad when trying to work from home. Totally depends on the person.

The food arrives when it’s ready at most other restaurants, but they’ve got the brains to figure out that if Dish A takes 5 minutes and Dish B takes 10, you wait 5 minutes before starting dish A.. I think it was originally meant to emulate cheap and cheerful dining in Japan but it’s way too expensive to get away with that shit.

Chungaroo22@reddit

Yeah, I had someone pull over to let me overtake in my BMW, was keeping 2 car lengths, it was the middle of the day so not my lights bothering them and we were both just doing the speed limit. People tend to give me a wide berth in general now, probably expecting some assholery. Whereas in my old MINI people were constantly up my arse. The new car’s worth it just for that!

I think part of the answer to the AI problem for developers is to learn AI. Either learn how to integrate AI services properly, because every SaaS company now wants better AI features in its product or get into the AI industry itself, understand how it works and get good competency in Python, which is what most AI tools run on. Most of the AI stuff people use day-to-day still needs decent web architecture for people to interact with and Python is a fairly easy language to get to grips with, especially compared to SQL which quite frankly, still fills me with dread whenever I have to use it. You’ll also get the added benefit of knowing how to spin up and maintain your own language model if the bubble does burst and online services start to en-shitify or start scrambling because they actually need to generate revenue (already clearly starting to happen with ChatGPT), which will give you an advantage over all the vibe coders coming into the industry that have lost their main source of information.

Running: Get some decent running shoes and do couch to 5k Cycling: Grab a cheap road bike off FB marketplace, ride it until Lycra doesn’t start to look as silly or stick the bike back on marketplace. Probably wait until the weathers better though.. Triathlon: Get into running and cycling, endure the swimming, say goodbye to having free time or free money. Gym: Join a gym and start a beginners program like 5x5. Embrace the fact that you’ll forever feel small. Guitar: Again FB marketplace may be a good idea to get a cheap guitar, find Marty Schwartz and Justin Guitar online or get a teacher.

What do people look for before going out to eat ?

Posted by AdQuiet9954@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 107 comments

Chungaroo22@reddit

Yeah this helps massively. When I'm booking somewhere we'll usually have a few veggies and vegans in our party so I'll always check online to see if there's a decent amount of food they can enjoy and not just one or two token dishes which aren't going to be anywhere near the quality of the meat ones. If the menu isn't online or clearly labelled that restaurant will be discounted immediately. Also, though I find it's often quite easy to find Indian restaurants with quality veggie and vegan stuff, it can be difficult to find ones with good or clearly labelled gluten free or dairy free options.

Absolutely agree on the glazing/windows front. We’ve got 15-20 year old ones that to the untrained eye look modern and like they’d do a good job but compared to newer panels they leak a hell of a lot of heat.

Same. Gonna quit on 2nd Jan. IMO it’s more addictive than smoking, I used vaping to give up smoking and although I do generally feel a lot healthier, you just don’t know what it’s doing to you. My longest stint with no nicotine was about 3 years, so I know it’s easy once you’re past the first few weeks. But it’s so easy to sink back into if you slip.

Which hoover would you choose and why?

Posted by Head_Equivalent_8155@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 773 comments

Chungaroo22@reddit

Might sound excessive but we have both. A small cordless bagless stick vacuum (not shark) for doing quick cleaning runs upstairs or cleaning out the car and a Henry for when we want a proper clean. The cordless one is good but I can’t use it as my main hoover, they seem to take way longer to actually get everything up and I found when it was our main hoover we were constantly opening it up to empty it, clean the filter etc. Henry just keeps doing it’s job for ages without needing any intervention. Plus if you do any DIY or make a big mess they just don’t seem up to the task. Conversely Henry’s a big lug who’s a pain in the ass to bring out for just picking up a bit of dust.

I personally find that when I'm really tired, I'll literally fall asleep with the book in my hands no matter how much I want to keep going or how light the subject matter is. Lego is a fantastic idea though. Especially if the kid picks up on it because it's great for them as well. I'm quite a big fan of the Speed Champions sets as they're quite cheap but the build time is reasonable and it's not over in a second and second hand stuff from ebay, vinted, brickbin or a car boot sale can be decent as well.
