First high density A321neo of Delta Airlines, with 44 first class seats (originally posted in r/delta)

Posted by freestyle50m@reddit | aviation | View on Reddit | 201 comments

Banfy_B@reddit

How do you evacuate in case of emergency?  Multiple levels of side by side bunks would be required to achieve the density you need for the average traveler to be able to afford beds.  Lie-flats work in business/first class because you get to sit upright during takeoff/landing and at most one person is blocking your exit. In economy class you’d hit your head on the upper bunk if you try to get up quickly and the upper bunks can’t get out if the aisle is full of evacuating passengers. Unfortunately lie-flat seats will remain a luxury for most ordinary travelers.

She's probably on the no-fly list for a few years at least. Depends on how severe the circumstances are and how far the authorities want to prosecute this she can be banned on domestic flights/railway in addition to fines and a suspended sentence.

What’s this 100NM exercise area?

Posted by loveofflying@reddit | aviation | View on Reddit | 123 comments

Banfy_B@reddit

It's not even that big compared to the annual Red Flag. BVR engagements or long range SAM systems can easily cover 100NM. If you really want you can fly inside the exercise zone to find out.

Today, Lufthansa made a recreation of it's first flight to Zurich and I was there. I'll tell you how the atmosphere was.

How would the A-12 Avenger II have maintained yaw stability without a tail?

Posted by Super_Neutral@reddit | aviation | View on Reddit | 10 comments

Banfy_B@reddit

Flying wings can be stable if the center of lift is sufficiently behind the center of gravity. If the aircraft yaws in one direction the other wing presents itself more to the airflow and drag pulls it back. The problem would be if it were flying supersonic (which it doesn't) the center of lift moves according to airspeed.

This is so much misinformation.  KJ-600 engines (WJ-6C) are AI-20 as much as F135 are F119. Being based on something doesn’t mean they’re the exact same. J-10 comes from J-9 and alleged technology transfer from Lavi.  Y-20 is more of a heavily modified Il-76 than C-17.  Z-10 is a heavily upgraded Z-9 which is a license production Dauphin which has nothing to do with the Apache. Z-20 comes from reverse engineered Blackhawks that were sold by the US in late 20th century, not from the crash in Pakistan. The purchase and technology transfer of T-10-K-3 from Ukraine has very little to do with Russian withdrawal from CR929 which happened over a decade after the acquisition.

J-36 with new main gear design, previously it was double bogie like Mig-31/Su-34.

Posted by MoazzamDML@reddit | aviation | View on Reddit | 118 comments

Banfy_B@reddit

F-135 is ill suited for high speed cruising. It has nearly double the bypass ratio of F-119 for higher efficiency and thrust. Twin engine design is not yet feasible as there is no engine available that can support something the size of J-36 going Mach 2+ while generating enough power for possibly the largest AESA on a fighter.

I mean it can’t be easier than this. Only one double decker plane in the world has serrated engines without an elongated upper deck. 747-8F

Is there a advantage for having two engines over one ? Like the F-22 vs the F-35 one engine.

What’s the difference between rectangular and circular AWACS radar?

In hindsight it was an inaccurate rendering with a KJ-2000 style radome on a Y-20B. I saw the triangle on the radome and thought it was a KJ-2000.

Via the DAS which is IR/optical. F-35 is designed to be a systems fighter and is supposed to be able to aggregate data from other friendlies in the area via datalink. It requires an extensive network of supported assets to achieve its full potential. Russia doesn't have that luxury as it has less than 50 AWACS in total to cover the largest country on earth and the vast majority are Cold War A-50.

Fixed AESA in the nose. There are other designs that attempts to increase the scan zone, newer batches of EF-2000 and Su-35 has hybrid radars that steers mechanically off bore to allow the ESA see angles it wouldn’t normally be able to scan. Su-57 has a very interesting design with a main array facing forward and two smaller ones in the cheeks to scan sideways. It also allegedly has a radar in its tail boom that scans for threats behind.

AWACS have to either have a rotodome or a multi-array set up to avoid blind spots. Electronically Scanned Arrays are really bad when it comes to high off boresight. E-2D has an AESA from 2010s so you're around 3 decades off. KJ went from having 3 fixed arrays in KJ-2000 to two rotating arrays in KJ-3000 which was a new development.

They're rotating but they're also AESA (KJ-3000), or fixed triangular AESA (KJ-2000 as pictured). E-2D also has an AESA rotating dish.

What are these oddly shaped devices next to the Rafale's inlets?

Posted by Gabi98x@reddit | aviation | View on Reddit | 78 comments

Banfy_B@reddit

Sort of, the most primitive forms of ECM are just noise emitters that makes it impossible to discern targets on a radar screen. The more advanced ones can give false signal returns to incoming radar waves or try to cancel out the returns altogether (like the active stealth marketed on the Rafale).

Since everyone here loves SU-57. Here’s one more video of it.

Royal Navy F-35B fighter jet after its emergency landing at Thiruvananthapuram Airport , INDIA

Banfy_B@reddit

Of course geometry is the main contributor, but you you can't say >no absorption really happening When modern RAM reduce returns by -20dB or more depending on the type and wavelength and is estimated to account for [\~20%](https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/materials-science/radar-absorbing-material) of LO/VLO design. For future upgrades for current airframe designs RAM is the only feasible aspect to upgrade in terms of (passive) detection avoidance.

This is clearly a demonstrator/prototype and quite possibly a drone. The exhausts point to a twin engine design which is a massive difference. It’s not abnormal for flying prototypes of aerodynamic designs (in this case VLO design as well). The flying aircrafts we see now for the next gen fighters are probably more akin to the relation of J-20 Prototype seen in 2011 to J-20 LRIP.

Try go on a hike with an AIM-9 or equivalent plus combat gear for 10 miles and come back to comment on how man-portable missiles with 20+ km max aero range are.

Can someone please explain how these airline due threat assessments? This plane today flew across barrage of missiles.

Cruise missiles don't have a plume because they usually use non-afterburning engines for range. Some have a rocket final stage for defense penetration but very rarely do cruise missiles emit light.

Because the rocket engines are still burning. Ballistic missiles are quite slow in the beginning and that appears to be the phase here as the glowing dots are rising not falling.

How the heck does someone tag the inside of a jet engine?

Building an F22 with nerfed stealth capabilities

Posted by International8935@reddit | aviation | View on Reddit | 8 comments

So basically an F-22 without RAM? Why would you build more expensive airframes when F-35 is cheaper and better at multirole. You aren't going to be dogfighting with Sukhois so I don't see the upside at all.
