How the heck does someone tag the inside of a jet engine?

And how is it not burnt off? I was at the London Airshow today and noticed this all the way in the back of one of the f-16s engines.
thatCdnplaneguy@reddit
Maintenance personal. And it’s probably wiped into the soot with a finger, so it will take time to be covered over. Think finger art on a dirty car.

Oh…and that is an F-15, not an F-16

That is an F-16 engine in a sense

Both jets use or have used different variants of the F100-PW or the F110-GE…so they’re not wrong.
WhistlingKyte@reddit
Don’t they both use the GE? I think I remember seeing a list of all of the aircraft it’s installed in and seeing Tomcat B as well as Eagle C on that list.
GooseDentures@reddit
No. F110 is only used on the F-16 and the charity project that is the F-15EX.

Both the F-15 and F-16 use the same engine, the Pratt & Whitney F100.

NectariiCh@reddit
F-16 is easily recognized because it has one engine, while a lot of other aircraft, such as f-15, f-18 and f-22 have two.
thatCdnplaneguy@reddit
F-16 is a small, single engine, lightweight fighter, the F-15 is a large, twin engined, air superiority fighter.
JoeM5952@reddit
Usually augmenter art is a silver/welders pencil. Not too much soot on the back of the bearing cover.

Those are my favorite kind of marker for ironwork
HeSaysYouFishPoorly@reddit
It's just regular chalkboard chalk. We use it for marking things that need inspection or reapair because pencil causes hotspots and marker doesn't wipe off easily. I was never the artist but I've seen some pretty intricate art are these heatshields. It was most likely done during the engins last backshop vist and it will stay there pretty much forever until someone cleans it. My current unit doesn't allow it because of an incident that ended up on the Air Force AMN/NCO/SNCO Facebook page, but some units allow "morale" and every engine has a name.
Source: 9 year engine troop
thatCdnplaneguy@reddit
Thanks for the clarification! I would have assumed chalk wouldn’t have lasted right near the afterburner. And I can see how something that’s not public friendly can be left in there.
One_pop_each@reddit
When I’d do engine bay inspections before installs on 16’s, I would always get excited to see the shit written by oily fingers on the intake walls.

SnoGoose@reddit
Engine guy here; If you ever get the hankering to do this, use chalk and nothing else. Everything else is bad, very bad.
oojiflip@reddit
How so? My assumption would have been that it would just be burned off by the airflow and heat, but I guess it could melt onto the metal and cause issues long term?
Anonawesome1@reddit
I've been told sharpie burns or oxidizes into the metal so it's very permanent, and graphite in pencils will burn through the metal.
Haven't tested it, but yes we only use chalk unless it's a dumb fuck crew chief with a grease pencil. That also becomes permanent.
SnoGoose@reddit
Chalk is the most common thing spelled out to make markings in the hot section. Anything else would contaminate the metal leading to failure. There is a specific Technical Order that specifies what can be used to mark in the hot sections of jet engines USAF T.O. 2-1-111

Jay467@reddit
Lol, the crew chief catching I's and E's that did that in this jet is probably pretty proud of their work.
Once, my jet (F-16s, relevant to the story) was loaned out to our sister squadron where my buddy worked and he ended up crewing it while they had it. He took a grease pencil and hid a ton of dick drawings in clever spots all over the thing, I was cleaning them off for days (weeks?) after the fact. When the jet came back to us, he warned me about it too - wouldn't you know, the first time I went to launch the thing and the pilot opened the speed brakes for our checks, the two halves folded open to reveal two huge 5' long grease pencil dongs. Absolutely killed me, I had to collect myself for a second before reporting back to the pilot that the brakes were fully open and moving on.
Beginning_Ad_6616@reddit
The important thing to remember is that aircraft maintenance draws sneaky dicks all over aircraft be they civilian or military. They don’t do it for themselves; they do it because want you to see their dick…
drawling.
faughnjj@reddit
As a sheetmetal guy, I used to draw dicks on patches I installed (usually over the cutout if it was a scab patch). I always laughed when I came across them.
Beginning_Ad_6616@reddit
Nothing is more rewarding than pulling a lav, panel, doubler, or whatever and finding a sharpie drawn dick….it makes all the effort that goes into repairing an aircraft worthwhile.
I think the funniest dick I’d have seen was on commercial aircraft pulled from heavy check. Once the morning sun hit the vertical stab aircraft it was clear that someone initially painted a massive dick on the tail and painted over it…quite the sight to behold. It was fixed before released; I don’t know who did it but everyone learned a valuable lesson that day.
faughnjj@reddit
When we were transitioning the F-15's from Langley to I believe Korea, we had to repaint them all so they could put their base specific tail markings. Well, we always had a specific deviation from the camo scheme on the tails that we called " The Langley Cock and Balls"..... and shortly after the first one transitioned, we got an email from the gaining base. The gist of it was "We're not gonna say what we think it looks like, but you might want to pay closer attention to the TO....."Needless to say, we had to follow the data for the remaining jets that were transferred out.
akroses161@reddit
Man someone drew a massive dick in an intake one night. It went from the inlet all the way to the fan blades. The base commander showed up for first goes the next morning and found it during his walk around. He called the Super over and ripped his ass right there on the flightline. Super had us scrubbing all of the intakes and wheels for the next month over that one.

Secretly the base commander or hell even the maj com commander laughed and enjoyed see that all is well and boys will be boys.

cheese2343J@reddit
That no F-16. It's an F-15. I was an F-15 crew chief in the US Air Force. It was probably done by the engine troops when it was pulled out for inspection/maintenance. It's a Pratt and Whitney F-100 engine to be specific. Same engine that's in the F-16, though. Only, F-16's have 1, while F-15's have 2. F-16's also have an oval shaped intake which causes them to be louder than the F-15 with its rectangular twin intakes.
squirtleturtle79@reddit (OP)
Yeah I realized I goofed soon after I posted. Cant figure out how to change it.
You arent kidding when you say the F-16 is louder, they had one flying in the airshow and it did a low pass overhead. Never have I felt something so loud before.

when we were on the Eisenhower ( Army here) the navy guys tagged all of the walls behind the aft row of all of our aircraft ( we tagged everything we could reach with pur unit stickers so fair game ) most of us never did paint over their tags ( they did theirs in paint while we were snoozing) . memories I guess
outdoorsgeek@reddit
Fun story! Now I’m curious what army aircraft embarks on a carrier?
junk-trunk@reddit
I was with UH60s, but I do know 64 guys do deck quals also. The Army occasionally does combat ops from boats. it's how the 10th mountain got to Haiti in thr late 90s ( were most of the shenannigans took place, it was a long ride ). they hauled us down there then we did an air assault with the infantry into Haiti, and self deployed from the boat to the main land....I would have preferred to stay on the boat instead haha!
At the time 10th mountain only had H60s and OH58s ( and some hueys but they were medecac only) when we deployed to Haiti. I am sure 47s do it to. Of course the 160th works off of naval ships all over the place all the time.
Anyhoo went off on story time there a long way of saying alll of the Army's airframes can work off of aircraft carriers
outdoorsgeek@reddit
Loved the story time and thanks for the info! I had known this was a possibility for rare cases. I had heard about specifically British 64s routinely operating off of carriers and maybe having some modifications for operating in a marine environment. But now I understand it’s much more common on the US side than I thought!
junk-trunk@reddit
it is really maintenance heavy for the Army guys tho. obviously our stuff is not built with maritime in mind, so a lot of.corrosuon control goes into being near/around salt water. (ive never been Navy so I am not sure what their corrosion control look like) We did routinely go to Cherry Point every year to use their ranges and all planes fixed and rotory would buzz through the bird baths the have set up there after every flight ( a wet experience for us back seaters, the window and drip pan seals at the time were NOT the greatestloll ) also pretty cool grabbing hot gas sitting behind harriers and the like waiting for our turn to to get some go juice before parking. good times!
outdoorsgeek@reddit
Thanks for sharing! Really cool to hear more of the backstory of how these operations work.

100 000 years ago in the early 90's the squadron I was in had a F/A-18A engine stored in the hanger overnight it was going to some kind of careers expo, it left with F-111C APU stenciled on it.
There is a 3-5minte window directly after shutdown to enter the burner tube and inspect the turbine while it's hot and any cracks are more likely to be visible, assuming the burner tube is big enough, you needed to squat and not touch the sides of the tube with anything other than your boots, usually using the torch for balance.
Skylynx224@reddit
There's a silver pencil we use in the air force on F16 engines to mark cracks in the augmentor liner and monitor them. Idk what it's made of but it doesn't seem to get burnt off. This crew chief seems to have had fun with his pencil. https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/topages/silverpencil.php

Probably chalk, added by the crew chief or more likely, an engine shop troop while the engine was in the shop. That dome isn’t really in the exhaust stream, so doesn’t get much soot. Spent many years as an engine mechanic on F-15’s.
