Why do so many people want to see Tottenham relegated from the Premier League?

Posted by uniscolar2000@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 102 comments

AnonymousWaster@reddit

Just like when Leicester City won the PL, it made things interesting because it wasn't just one of the usual big clubs winning the league yet again. So I'd love Spurs to get relegated as it would be something different compared to the usual yo-yo cycle of newly promoted clubs going straight back down to the championship.

What does signalling error mean on the underground trains?

Posted by OkTax3981@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 23 comments

AnonymousWaster@reddit

Also signals don't work in isolation, they work as part of a system. Signals are interlocked with the points (to prevent conflicting routes being set) and also with train detection (such as track circuits or axle counters, so that the system can 'prove' where every train is). So a 'signal failure' may actually be some of these components not talking to each other or working together properly. As others have said, they are all designed to fail safe.

AnonymousWaster@reddit

I didn't 'decide' to have a kid, but it happened. So just had to buckle up and get on with it. Genuinely the worst thing to have ever happened to me. There is not one single thing which is better about my life now as a parent than it was before.

Why is buying tickets at train stations in the UK more expensive than on mobile apps?

Posted by Travellondon_rr@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 33 comments

AnonymousWaster@reddit

That would depend entirely on the type of ticket which you need - Advance tickets will not be appropriate for everyone's journey due to the lack of flexibility.

Why is buying tickets at train stations in the UK more expensive than on mobile apps?

Posted by Travellondon_rr@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 33 comments

AnonymousWaster@reddit

It isn't more expensive. Off Peak and Anytime tickets cost exactly the same whenever and wherever you book them. Advance tickets are yield managed and quota controlled (just like airline tickets) and so the price can vary depending on availability and demand.

Do British people find American English weird?

Posted by Queasy-Shine-1172@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 898 comments

AnonymousWaster@reddit

There are a lot of American accents on TV so we are familiar with the way they speak. It still sounds weird though- and they do use some words differently to us.

Seat reservations don't get transferred across from a train which is cancelled to any other train. Which is shit for the reservation holder, but tough titty unfortunately.

I was at work, and Radio 1 was on in the background. So I remember the events of that day being described by Mark and Lard, absolutely bizarre to hear them talking about something so sombre. Then I remember going home and watching it on the news that evening. Completely harrowing.

There were virtually no lineside trees along our railways before the 1980s. Did that cause more landslides in those days? Tree roots also causes dessication affecting the integrity of railway embankments, which was a major issue during the hot summer a few years back.
