Why do so many people want to see Tottenham relegated from the Premier League?
Posted by uniscolar2000@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 92 comments
I'm not a fan of them but there seems to be an overwhelming majority of football fans who want to see Tottenham go down. It's very tight between them and West Ham at the moment in that anyway could happen yet it's like everyone is rooting for West Ham to stay up. What's with the overwhelming hate that Tottenham get?
Warm_Stress_1654@reddit
It's odd, isn't it?
Everyone in this country is flinging accusations of anti-Semitism back and forth until we come to the mystery of why on earth people might be relishing the misfortune of Tottenham Hotspur F.C.
terryjuicelawson@reddit
It being anti-semitic is a bit of a stretch, because what - there is a slightly higher than average number of Jewish people in the area of London they are based?
Warm_Stress_1654@reddit
You're aware of the club's nickname? It is very focused on that slightly higher than average number.
Particular-Quit-630@reddit
Because there was a video of their fans where lots of the fans said they were happy to get relegated as long as Arsenal don’t win the league.
One fan also said that it didn’t matter if they got relegated as they would come straight back up.
I really want to see them go down and ideally struggle, and I actually quite like Tottenham.
deathbymidnights@reddit
Sorry, but I'm a season ticket holder and not heard one person say this in the stands. What you're talking about is overwhelming minority. Not real fans either in my opinion.
TheMarkMatthews@reddit
Yeah go down and keep this poor form going for the first 20 games. Let them enjoy a couple of seasons in championship before coming back up
AndyVillan@reddit
Because it'll be really funny. A so called "big 6" club, purely driven by sky and the media getting relegated is hilarious.
That stadium in the Championship, again, will be really funny
Relevant_Natural3471@reddit
Kholdula@reddit
Not ever being relegated doesn't mean they're big... Look at their GD, 400 odd worse than Cities who were out the league for a good chunk and well off the 4 above despite playing the same number of games.
Relevant_Natural3471@reddit
One of the highest revenues in world football, biggest stadium and training facilities, and in the top 5 of the continuous PL table.
It seems like you have a problem with the term 'big', more than anything else.
Kholdula@reddit
As the saying goes, show us your medals. That's the only metric that actually matters. Spurs are shite.
terryjuicelawson@reddit
Not sure really as all sorts of teams have won cups after a good run, that is all it takes, but are now relegated and have that in isolation. Sustaining a high league table position is a much better metric long term.
Kholdula@reddit
Ask a Leicester fan if they'd trade their PL and FA Cup for being the team with the 6th most points in the league. Or a Forest or Villa fan if they'd trade their European Cups.
Having the 6th most points from an arbitrary point in time doesn't make you a big club. When all is said and done and if Spurs go down they can't hang their hat on being a PL ever present. But they will have a lovely stadium so kudos to them.
StarShipYear@reddit
In defence of u/Relevant_Natural3471, I don't think that medals are all that matters in this context. For example, in a hypothetical scenario where a team finished 2nd place every season, without ever winning a trophy, does that then make them "shite"? Certainly it would be laughable, but they wouldn't be a shit team, because they were consistently at the top in terms of competitiveness.
Kholdula@reddit
Did that happen with Spurs?
Relevant_Natural3471@reddit
Yes, in the season Conte won it with chelsea.
Same number of trophies as Arsenal this decade, tbf
Kholdula@reddit
So one season? My apologies, they are clearly massive.
Relevant_Natural3471@reddit
the 'argument' is about the 6th biggest team in the league.
The bottlejobs haven't won a league for 23 years now, and have never won the Champions League or UEFA Cup/Europa League. Are they not a 'big club'?
Kholdula@reddit
I think you've misunderstood the argument in what AndyVillan meant when he said "so called big 6 club".
If you're happy thinking you're a big club because you have a big, shiny stadium them more power to you. This is why it will be funny if/when you go down.
Relevant_Natural3471@reddit
No, I think you're misunderstanding.
The club is comfortably within the top 6 clubs of the all-time PL time. It has spent most of the last 20 years in the top 6. I'm pretty sure I'm also correct in saying it is in the top 6 of the most trophies won by PL clubs this century. It is also the 6th most successful club, in trophies won, in FA football history.
By revenue, facilities etc - it is, by every measure, a 'big club', and by the stats above it is the 6th biggest in the league.
It's just weird to be straining a muscle doing mental gymnastics to deny that.
Kholdula@reddit
Top 6 ≠ "Big 6" - The issue lies within this made up term to try and bring Spurs in line with the other clubs for some reason? Why 6? We used to talk of the "Top 4" (Liverpool, Man U, Arsenal and Chelsea), this seemed to get expanded to 5 with the rise of City and then somehow Spurs were included in the conversation despite not having any tangible reason for their inclusion.
2 trophies this century by my count. There's a team that will be playing League 1 football with a more impressive haul of silverwear over the same period.
FWIW - I'm of the opinion that there are 2 truly Big teams, that you can hold up almost any metric and they can meet it. Others have won PLs and CLs, but required some amount of state sponsored funding to get there. Others still have won CL/EC. Then there's Arsenal and Spurs and at least Arsenal have had the good grace to win the League in (almost) recent memory.
Relevant_Natural3471@reddit
Top 6 is ephemeral. It doesn't mean anything but the league in a snapshot. Brighton are currently in the top 6, but they aren't the 6th biggest team in the league are they??
Kholdula@reddit
OK, so what in your opinion makes Spurs a bigger club than say Villa?
Relevant_Natural3471@reddit
Villa don't have the 9th highest revenue in football (they have half the revenue), or modern training facilities, or a modern stadium, haven't won a trophy in 30 years, and are in debt up to their eyeballs pushing FFP to finish in the top 5.
That comes across as a very uninformed question.
Kholdula@reddit
Again with financials... They don't matter anywhere near to actual trophies. I know you have to grasp at something to justify your argument, but no one sings about their balance sheet on the terraces up and down the country do they?
Relevant_Natural3471@reddit
Take the finances away then. Who else in the league, outside of Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, and City have?
Aston villa have no trophies in 30 years. Brighton have never won a trophy.
As I've said, Tottenham are the 6th most successful club in english football, and that would be higher if Chelsea and City weren't doing unscrupulous things for the past 20 seasons
EchoesofIllyria@reddit
I think it’s less about ‘big’ and more about the fact that they dare to put themselves alongside the rest of the ‘Big 5’ despite a fraction of the success.
escapingfromelba@reddit
West Ham going down costs the London taxpayer more thanks to the Olympic legacy.
Shyspin@reddit
A few years ago they declared themselves part of the European Super League, something which would have pretty much destroyed English and European football as we know it. Funny how things turn out...
ProfPMJ-123@reddit
My answer too.
They wanted to create a league that wouldn’t have relegation.
Fuck Tottenham, fuck Arsenal, fuck Man Utd, fuck Liverpool, fuck Chelsea, fuck Man City.
Every time one of those self serving fuckers suffers hardship will be a good day for football.
Nuthetes@reddit
I am so disappointed the teams weren't punished further. I'd have bunged the lot down into non-league.
SorryNorth1246@reddit
They made the Super League anyway and it's now called Champions League - 'League phase'. They couldn't do it as a clean takeover, so they started making it half tournament and squeezed more games in it. Wait and see it become a full league without knockout phase in a few years.
Special_Artichoke@reddit
This is my answer, they thought they were too big for the premier league, you sure are lil bud, now go play Charlton in the champo ✨
Shyspin@reddit
They were also part of Project Big Picture which was a forerunner for the ESL. That would have given the self declared 'big six' voting rights on how other clubs could do business, but thankfully like the ESL, it was thrown out.
Ceejayncl@reddit
Everyone forgets project big picture, it would have been a bigger blow to English football than the ESL.
Shyspin@reddit
Spot on
ActionBirbie@reddit
For the bants.
The_Nunnster@reddit
I don’t dislike Tottenham, but I would be rooting for any big six team to go down if it seemed possible. It’s funny and would also give some championship teams a chance to face off against them next season. I felt similarly when West Ham or Everton looked like they were going to drop.
RawWifi@reddit
A lot of their fans are annoying and claim that they're their local, much like arsenal fans.. north London doesn't mean you are local to them just because you hop on a train to watch them over a 3 hour journey.. football would benefit with north London being removed from the English pyramid.
Krakshotz@reddit
They’ve long been a running joke, prior to last year it used to be that they struggled for silverware despite being a Big 6 club. Then they won the Europa League last May, which seemed to trigger the monkey’s paw.
They were also one of the main parties involved in the European Super League project, which was universally reviled by fans. Having at least one of the clubs involved struggle as a result of their involvement is a degree of karma.
Also their massive stadium in the Championship would be funny
Key-Original-225@reddit
Because it’s funny. It’s something that by all rights probably shouldn’t happen, but if it does it’s an oddity. It’s also great to see a team that wasn’t promoted from the championship the year before get relegated.
Melodic_Coast_1029@reddit
Funny, they’re a ‘big 6’ team and it’ll be funny to see them go down
abstract_groove@reddit
I reckon they will actually crack the big six next season if they get off to a good start. Depends how Derby County and Hull get on though I suppose.
abstract_groove@reddit
Because watching Arsenal bottle another title and see Spurs go down on the same day would be funny as fuck
Derfel60@reddit
Because they thought they were one of the big boys so its good to see them put in their place
Fearless-Hedgehog661@reddit
European Super League pretensions to the Championship, in five years; hilarious.
Remember OP; every club in whatever league they're in, and no matter how big their fan base, has minority support.
I'm Scottish, so don't really have any skin in this, but I feel exactly the same about the possibility of Sevilla dropping out of La Liga.
DiabeticNun@reddit
Funny
Early_Enthusiasm_787@reddit
Yep
Oghamstoner@reddit
It’s Schadenfreude. We’d love it if all the big 6 could get relegated. Usually they have the resources to get themselves out of trouble by the end of the season. Massive testament to how competitive the Premier League as a whole has become that one of the world’s richest football clubs could get relegated.
thedudeabides-12@reddit
Cause it's Spurs..
theped26@reddit
I think it’s so funny that will fight, laugh, mock other people over a game 😂
Snoo93102@reddit
Amount of money they have spent over the years. This is rediculous.
CtrlShiftAaron@reddit
Because it would be the funniest thing to happen alongside Arsenal bottling the league - again!!
Few_House_5201@reddit
Funny. Innit.
AnonymousWaster@reddit
Just like when Leicester City won the PL, it made things interesting because it wasn't just one of the usual big clubs winning the league yet again.
So I'd love Spurs to get relegated as it would be something different compared to the usual yo-yo cycle of newly promoted clubs going straight back down to the championship.
Throwaway187493@reddit
Because they abused ange postecoglou. Rewarded them a European trophy and they rewarded him with the sack. Tin pot club.
RN50@reddit
I think they will survive just imo only because they finally have the right manager in. If they got him a few months back they would easily be safe.
DenseChange4323@reddit
Funny
Coocoocachoo1988@reddit
The club and fanbase seem to believe they are one of the big clubs despite not achieving anything to merit that. It got a lot worse when they tried to be part of the "big 6" when the Super League was suggested, considering they wanted to lock out European teams that had previously won.
Intelligent-Ad5258@reddit
Because it’s up there with the likes of Liverpool or Man U going down. Plus they probably have their fair share of plastic fans
chicken_nugget94@reddit
Because they achieved a good spell and then essentially tried to force it so that no other clubs would be able to replicate it from a similar position of being a midtable club
markusparkus75@reddit
It would be funny.
bluenosekev@reddit
And they pinched southamptons song , " oh when the saints go marching in " ..BASTARDS
R1ceKai@reddit
Lads it's Tottenham
Unfair_Original_2536@reddit
I think because of hundreds of wee guys around the globe who are diehard fans online acting like they were the greatest club in the world with a weird sense of entitlement, and the terrible way the club have treated managers especially big Ange.
Not that I've thought about it.
Relevant_Natural3471@reddit
I don't think sacking someone for turning a top 6 team into relegation fodder is 'terrible'
Unfair_Original_2536@reddit
For winning a club that doesn't regularly win trophies a major trophy and ECL qualification.
Madness.
Relevant_Natural3471@reddit
A trophy that teams near the bottom of the PL can get to a Semi Final of, if they throw the league down the toilet.
What an achievement.
elnovino23@reddit
one word answers it for me, entitlement
wiffernal@reddit
Because they never learn.
D0wnInAlbion@reddit
I'll support the downfall of any club who tried to form the Super League.
franki-pinks@reddit
A few years ago they thought they were too good for the premier league and wanted to leave it. Soon they may get their wish.
marxistopportunist@reddit
Any club that sacks amazing managers deserves what they get
Intelligent-Ant-5770@reddit
I think cause it will be funny and some fans do Gas up the team a little and this puts them in their place. It's more I guess club arrogance too sacking Ange after winning the Europa league is quite mad I know Ange finished near Relegation but He won an european trophy
sufcWayne@reddit
It'd be a big shock in football and what being a fan of the sport is all about
Tactical-Chunderer@reddit
Not necessarily hate, more like laughter because it would be hilarious. Big 6 my arse.
datguysadz@reddit
They are part of the so-called 'sky six'
NLFG@reddit
Because Spurs fans have this odd superiority complex from winning the league 60 ( SIXTY) years ago, combined with their unfailing ability to fail at the final hurdle consistently over the last thirty odd years despite them being a genuinely massive football club.
Also, funny.
Effective_Topic_4728@reddit
Because it's funny. Although west ham going down instead with their heavily taxpayer subsidised stadium would at least be a bit of karma
ZestyBeer@reddit
grae3333@reddit
Tinpot club in big stadium go into the championship
l0stlabyrinth@reddit
They've been sold by the media as a member of the "Sky 6" whilst only winning one trophy in a very long time - a Europa League in a match against Man Utd who also finished in the bottom half of the table in a game truly earning the billing of "El Crapico".
It would be absolutely hilarious to see.
Larvesta_Harvesta@reddit
It's no more or less funny than any other big team. Though arguably Man Utd would be the funniest of all.
nsnyder@reddit
It’d be Spursy.
ResplendentBear@reddit
It's not overwhelming hate. It's the same reason people laughed so much at Man U for the last 10+ years. It's a big club collapsing.
unclelumbago1@reddit
Because it'll be a pisser.
mcneill09@reddit
its just funny seeing one of the "bigger" teams struggle.
Fingertoes1905@reddit
Bants
oscarx-ray@reddit
I support their rivals and it would be funny for me.
Madog-Hellgeese@reddit
It's a laugh ennit

Because it would be very funny
