Do you use “Girlfriend” as friend and/or romantic partner?

Posted by rjewell40@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 197 comments

whatisakafka@reddit

Here’s a whole article with by a lesbian complaining about this, including examples of the exact same usage singular usage I’m talking about. I’m sure as hell not the only person who’s ever heard a straight woman say “my girlfriend” in a sentence: “Straight, cis women have been using the term “girlfriend” as a way to describe (perhaps redundantly) their other straight, female friends for decades. They use it in the singular and in the plural, as in, “My girlfriend and I had the best manicure there,” or “My girlfriends and I road tripped to Coachella last summer.” It is outdated. My God, is it outdated. Straight cis men never refer to their male friends as their boyfriends. So, why do straight women continue to refer to their platonic female friends as such? It’s 2016, ladies.” https://woxer.com/blogs/news/a-lesbian-reclamation-of-the-word-girlfriend

It's funny coming from Canadians, because they use the 7 continent model just like us, so there's no such continent as "America". "North America" is a distinct thing, and no one called people from the US "North Americans" to the exclusion of other North American countries. I get the issue with Latin American countries, because they many use a different continent model where America is one continent, but Canadians getting pissy about it just seems like sour grapes

If I asked a coworker how her weekend was, I feel like “my girlfriend and I went shopping” would be a completely normal response and could easily mean a platonic friend

No, women definitely use the singular girlfriend in a platonic way too. You can really only tell by context/knowing their sexuality if they mean platonic or romantic

Do high school students have the same lessons in the same order every day?

Posted by squeoj@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 181 comments

whatisakafka@reddit

It varies. The most common are probably traditional period schedule like you're describing, but A/B schedules are fairly common too, where you have an A day with certain class, and a B day with other classes, and that just go through the year. There are other schedule types too, but what you're describing as a different lesson each day would be very uncommon here

You need to sit down and actually do the math on how much you'll save on gas vs your current car, then factor in any increases to insurance costs, the potential maintenance costs, and any other factors that can be measured in dollar amounts. I doubt it's worth it unless you're currently driving an H1 or something

There’s actually evidence that men use vocal fry more often than women [https://arstechnica.com/science/2026/05/men-use-vocal-fry-more-than-women-counter-to-stereotype/](https://arstechnica.com/science/2026/05/men-use-vocal-fry-more-than-women-counter-to-stereotype/) And it’s not as much of a recent development as people perceive it to be [https://srbellavance.github.io/files/published\_papers/VanDoren&Bellavance2025\_a-brief-history-of-vocal-fry-terminology-definitions-and-sentiment.pdf](https://srbellavance.github.io/files/published_papers/VanDoren&Bellavance2025_a-brief-history-of-vocal-fry-terminology-definitions-and-sentiment.pdf)

I've only seen this attitude in densely populated areas or areas where lots of people don't have cars, but it's not the norm. Like when I lived in DC, I knew people who didn't want to date anyone who lived across the river in Virginia because it was "too far", but when you live out in the suburbs or cities more focused around everyone driving everywhere, no one really considers a 30 minute drive far
