>Plus whatever those cheeks are supposed to be, does it direct the airflow all the way to the side to the brakes at least? If it's anything like the current Mercedes cars (and all the other sedans on the market), they are just fake vents lol. The press pictures make it look like they are solid plastic, with some tiny sensors on them.

Vram usage question

Posted by extraordinary_x@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 7 comments

totally_normal_here@reddit

There's only so much memory that your system/game will require. If you upgraded to 1 TB RAM, there isn't some sort of memory black hole that will consume all of it. If you're using 100% of your RAM or VRAM, then you don't have enough and you will lose performance as your PC can't keep everything in memory and will have to perform page swaps. With VRAM in particular, you can get huge stutters if you run out of VRAM and it has to load assets from system RAM instead. There's a difference between memory allocation and actual usage, but there's also memory management at play. If you are running out of RAM, Windows will start clearing background apps to make more space. If you are running out of VRAM, then the game might start dynamically adjusting texture quality to lower VRAM usage. That's why memory usage typically hits 90-95% at most and makes people to think they have enough RAM/VRAM when they are actually memory limited and could do with more.

5070 vs 5070 Ti

totally_normal_here@reddit

So you're buying a prebuilt PC? I think the extra $450 AUD is worth it for the substantial performance increase and especially the extra VRAM. The 3070 from a few years ago aged like milk with its 8 GB VRAM, you could be looking at the same thing with the 5070. The case thing is a valid concern. You could try shopping for other options, or finding a 9070 XT build if that's cheaper. But I think it will probably be okay as long as you have a few centimetres between the case and the wall. About unknown component brands, it is a little bit more sketchy. I'm guessing that the one that doesn't list the brands might have a couple of different suppliers for the video card, SSDs, etc. Or maybe they are using some dodgy power supplies or really low end motherboards to cut costs, who knows. At least with the 5070 company, you can look up each component to check whether it is acceptable or not.

All those black plastic parts on the exterior that are meant to look like a vent for air to go in or out of, but it's just solid plastic with no perforation. Think 10th gen Civic or Toyota Supra, but it's basically every car now. The only ones without fake vents I can think of are the Nissan Z, GTR, Porsches, and supercars. And by extension, you have those oversized grilles which are 25% actual grille and 75% solid plastic. Also common on basically all cars and also getting more extreme.

Samsung can't even afford to have a unique frame colour for each of their flagship S25 Ultra colourways. Same with the S-Pen colour, they've also removed Bluetooth from it. They're even too broke to afford adding an extra camera/assistant button to their phones. They don't even use their best displays, and keep reusing the same cameras for 3+ years. It's pretty much the same story with the other manufacturers, but Samsung is especially sad and pathetic.

If they just gave it a typical wide bodykit and wing, no one would care about it being slower than XYZ or its pricetag. When you put GT3 derived aero on it and make it look like a street legal race car, people's expectations will skyrocket.

1000% agree. I think it only looks good if you raise the wheel arches to keep the even gap. Like on widebody race cars or hypercars, they could have barely a centimetre of ground clearance, but they still keep the wheel arch properly spaced instead of going for the stanced look.

I had a late 2019 Ultrabook with an 11th gen i7-1165G7 (4c/8t), and that thing was so terrible. Even at that time, 4 cores seemed pretty underwhelming. It also had an absolutely pathetic base clock of 1.2 GHz, would idle at 50-60°C when doing nothing, and shoot up to 100°C and throttle as soon as you put it under any sort of workload.

Why do comfort purposed cars of today objectively ride harsher than comfort purposed cars of 20+ years ago?

Posted by SportsGamesScience@reddit | cars | View on Reddit | 400 comments

I imagine there's some user testing or focus groups that help drive these decisions. Maybe a consumer won't directly say, "I want 22" wheels", but if they are shown a model with small wheels and another with bigger wheels, there's a chance that the majority prefer the look of the one with bigger wheels. Wheels are a major design feature of a car, and most people only consider them from a visual standpoint. People generally want big and flashy, rather than small, lightweight and aerodynamic.

>A mid sized crossover can be specified out of the factory to run on wheels that would be laughed at on *Pimp My Ride* two decades ago. It's funny, isn't it? If you customised your car with 21" wheels, a gaudy bodykit with a bunch of fake vents, a fake diffuser and even fake exhaust tips, everyone would make fun of you. But now, manufacturers are ricing cars straight from the factory. I thought there would be a point where people would think it's too much, with only a few centimetres of sidewall and the entire front of the car being (fake) grill, but people seem to like it.

Most of those huge front grilles are just fake, though. The M3 is designed to have the license plate run across the buck teeth, even the ZL1 Camaro looks like the upper half of the grille is just covering the crash structure. Same with Audi, Lexus, Ford, etc, the huge front grilles are around 50-75% solid plastic. They often are flanked by large vents on either side (imitating front brake intakes or air curtains) which are also completely fake and often just house fog lights or a few sensors. It's 100% an aesthetic thing. It's funny, because race cars like the Audi RS5 DTM or Aston Martin Vantage DTM only need a fraction of the grille size that their road versions have, so they use loads of black cladding to imitate the road car's grille shape.

They did a great job of working around the weight, but it's not like being heavy benefits the car. More weight (mass) = more inertia = worse acceleration, braking and cornering. Weight and downforce are both forces that push the car down, but downforce doesn't come with the inertia penalty. There's a reason why race cars have weight reduction.

True, I had a 1 II back then and the fingerprint scanner was terrible. I personally think the placement is fine and very natural, it's just that Sony really screwed up the implementation. If you look at the older Sony phones, or other phones with side scanners, you have to press the power button to activate the scanner. But they made it always active and it doesn't even vibrate for feedback if it misreads your print. Half of the time it doesn't even seem to scan and there are lots of reports of the fingerprint scanner failing. I don't quite get how a side fingerprint scanner is unintuitive, when it's just as easy as holding your smartphone and pressing the power button, but others have said the same thing so you're not the only one haha. You can unlock your phone as you pull it from your pocket, and don't need to reach your thumb down to touch the in-display scanner.

I didn't like the aspect ratio as well, but they've changed it to 19.5:9 since last year. Only problem is that they've seemingly abandoned the 5 series. But with the power button / fingerprint scanner, why can't you use it with your left hand? If you can physically hold your phone, that means your fingertips reach the other side where the power button is. You can just double tap the screen if you want to wake the screen without unlocking.

I think you are stretching it. If you ask most people what a particular device name means, they'd had no clue at all. A popular product like the iPhones is going to get a better response simply because everyone knows what iPhones are. But even the iPhones aren't always straightforward. You had the 6, 6S, 7, 8 (released alongside the X), XS, 11, 11 Pro, and then you have other lettered models like "C", "SE" and "E". No one will understand what an iPhone 16E means straight off the bat, but it doesn't matter because they are going to do some research before they buy the phone. Same deal with Sony. And then you have Samsung with its dozens of phone lines and models. You have the S series with the Ultra, FE and Edge variants, the A, M, and J series with all sorts of numbers behind them. They pretty much cover the entire alphabet and all the numbers, too. Sometimes you get letters, numbers and more letters, like M55s. And also, you have the Chinese phones/tablets, which sometimes get a different name for the global version. You have to be really careful, because sometimes the exact same model name for one region might have different specs compared to the same model name for another region. Oppo has both Pro and Ultra variants of their Find X8. So I think the Xperia lineup is pretty simple compared to the rest. It's pretty much 1, 5 and 10, followed by the generation number. But at the end of the day, people aren't just reading a text list of phone models and saying, "I'm going with the Samsung Galaxy M55s 5G" and paying straight away. They will understand what they are buying.

Cars with big grilles that look good?

I guess it's not a true big grille, but I like how the Lancer Evo X and the R35 GTR handled it. They have an upper and lower section, and join it together with a black middle section. So it's pretty much just colour-blocking to resemble a larger grille. I think that approach looks a lot neater and less fake than other manufacturers who use a mesh pattern across the entire grille even though it's 75% fake, and then make the front end look even more fake and messy by giving it huge fake brake vents / radiators on either side of the huge grille .

The shallow depth of field is definitely an issue with modern smartphones. The main cameras can no longer take close up shots with the subject in full focus. If you try taking a picture of a document using the main camera, only the centre portion will be in focus. They often switch to a secondary camera for these macro shots, but the quality isn't as good. Autofocus algorithms need to be a lot more precise now, since the depth of field is so shallow. If you compare an old phone like the Pixel 3 with its 1/2.55” sensor and F/1.8 lens to anything remotely modern, the difference is night and day. Maybe the F/4 aperture can help with this? Or it might be useful for daytime photography. Both Samsung and Sony have tried using variable apertures in the past.

Yup. I had the same issue with my HP Spectre. They started falling off within a month, that's how bad HP's material choice, design and thermals were (thanks, Intel 10th gen). The icing on the cake was how the rubber feet didn't even stop the laptop from sliding around, due to their angled/pointed design which minimised contact area.

It seems like the laptop that would really catch my eye if I saw it in real life, but owning one would be a completely different story. I really hate how every manufacturer apart from Apple keeps on doing white or silver keyboards. As pointed out in the review, they have terrible contrast issues where you need to toggle the backlight on or off for visibility depending on the lighting, and if you have some sort of mixed lighting you get screwed either way. The only way I think it might work is if you have an RBG keyboard like the Zephyrus G14 and you set it to blue or red. Either way, I've got to give Apple credit for caring about user experience rather than just trying to make a pretty laptop to get the sale. Likewise with their 4 rubber feet design opposed to other manufacturers who love using 2 long rubber strips across the laptop which are guaranteed to thermally expand and fall off after a few months or years.

How are rear wings on race cars (and supercars) attached? With aftermarket wings I often see people saying, "yeah, that's chassis mounted, that's functional race car stuff". But I've never seen an actual race car with those massively over-supported wings attached through the rear bumper. Most race cars have simpler supports mounted on top of the trunk. Are those race cars wings mounted through the trunk to the chassis, or is the trunk strong enough to support the load from the wing?

Samsung's "45 W" was very misleading, it was basically just a marketing gimmick. Their 45 W would barely charge faster than the 25 W charger because it only sustained 45 W of power for a few minutes at best. Still plenty fast, but it's a massive stretch to consider it 45 W charging

I don't think this refresh is horrendously bad, but I definitely prefer the previous year's model too. The only thing I like about the 2024 Nismo is the larger wing (which honestly should have been on the 2023 model). The Evo X styled front is a great way to have a clean and aggressive look without the ridiculousness of a huge (mostly fake) grill. Smart colour blocking is all you need, I reckon the new Supra would look better as well with the same style.
