I’ve been living in my Brooks Caldera sneakers for the last few years. Got some orthotic inserts for extra support. I’m self conscious of this being an “old person” thing but taking care of your feet seems to be one of those old people things that really makes a big quality of life difference

Why do younger millennials insist that skinny jeans were popular for all millennials? I wore bootcut and straight leg in hs and college

The advent of skinny jeans was hipsters in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in the mid 00s. I was at the end of college, and in NYC after that and was a part of the problem myself ha

I thought it was funny that it would be a vegan cookie recipe because of the contrast to how aggressive and martial the song sounds. But, sure, lecture a fellow old about the history of cannabis…

I’m reminded that around this time, Tool released that super aggressive fashy-sounding song where the lyrics are a recipe for vegan cookies, but it’s in German so it sounds super aggro

Could be. Who knows. All I know is that the only explanation that makes sense to be is that someone somewhere benefitted (and continues to benefit) from this massive miscarriage of justice.

Yeah, I mean gaslighting today about what it was like then. People who either weren’t alive or were barely alive trying to tell me in all seriousness that it must have been SO COOL coming of age in the 90s because of all the COOL STUFF. Oh, you mean the cool stuff like queer bashing, hiding from beatings, and being accused of witchcraft at 14? (In fairness, I did end up being a witch, but none of us knew that then, heh.) I’m sorry you went through all that. I’d say at least it’s not like that now, but… 😭

They’re bringing back all the worst parts of the 90s — the fashion, the fascism, the homophobia and transphobia (despite being the most openly queer generation we have yet had). I don’t get it.

Which one of you did this, with any media/movie/book/show, and what was it?

Around 15 or 16. I got a mocha latte at the Starbucks in Borders, which is where friends and I would meet up to do homework sometimes. Jesus that’s a late 90s time capsule sentence.

Are we that special?

I was a high school senior when it happened. I was in the midwest and the Army started coming to lunch to recruit every week. I still can’t hear the words “stop loss” without becoming irrationally angry. Though, i think the anger itself is pretty rational.

This could be touchy but please read the comment for more context, I just want to see if I'm remembering wrong. When I was in HS, not only was it normal to hear about 15 and 16 year olds dating guys in their 20's, but the girls that did were "cool"

therealstabitha@reddit

I mean, yeah, that happened pretty regularly. Also, this was around the time that Jerry Seinfeld was reported to be dropping his girlfriend off at her Long Island high school, and people bent over backwards to make it okay that Kobe Bryant raped a woman. (And before anyone tries to fight me on that, _he admitted it a few years before he died and apologized to the woman he harmed. You have the same Google I do._) I’m not sure if it’s pendulum-swinging overreaction, or the fact that a lot of teens got preyed upon by emotionally unstable millennials via scene/emo/Warped Tour culture and people got fed up, but yeah, now young people seem to want the comfort of black and white rules around age gates when interacting romantically with anyone. Which I also don’t think is effective or helpful to anyone.

How effective were these contraptions really?

A 36 year old saying you’re too old at 45 sounds like an excuse to me, not the real reason. I don’t give a shit about age differences when the youngest of the relationship is over 30. I dated a couple people in their early 50s when I was 30. Past 30, I say do whatever you like.
