What is your comfort movie?

I am 44 and over the years, this has become my comfort movie. Such an amazing soundtrack, story and great quotes. I put it on when I can’t sleep and it relaxes me.

I loved this movie as a teenager. I rewatched it recently after reading Mark Lannagans book sing backwards and weep. He hated the film and the fact that it made their song so big. Go figure.
booksandcoriander@reddit
I kinda forgot about this one. Wasn't it super Seattle? I do remember really liking it. I wonder where I can rewatch it.
Useful-Permission167@reddit
YES!! Cameron Crowe/ Seattle in the 90s. I wanted it to be my life

One of my favs. However, after 3,573 rewatches, it pains me how many times Mitch touches his face.
Rdubya291@reddit
Literally young and awkward in real life, shooting his first movie. And that made him awkward in the film. I think it worked, though. It certainly came through.
Now take this money and run next door to pick up a sixer.

It worked out so well! “You cool, man?”

Tremors.
It's an odd choice, maybe, but the cast and the writing are hilarious. Great performance from Kevin Bacon, too.
Jonestown_Juice@reddit
Tremors is one of the perfect movies of that era.
Gremlins, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, Tremors.
KillysgungoesBLAME@reddit
“Broke into the wrong Goddamn rec room, didn’t you, you bastard!”
burnafter3ading@reddit
Burt Gummer: Last ever funny conservative character (besides Hank Hill).
RedLily08@reddit
Why is it an odd choice? I love Tremors. It's fun and light and has a happy ending
therealstabitha@reddit
My family, my husband, and I all quote this movie all the time. Heather and Burt forever.
StandardAd239@reddit
greaterwhiterwookiee@reddit
I rewatched a series of 90s movies I hadn’t seen since the 90s and left reviews on my Facebook and this was one of my movie choices.
This movie totally holds up.
shiftdown@reddit
Have a lot of good memories with Tremors 2!
burnafter3ading@reddit
My favorite scene was the ending. >!With all the creatures trapped in a warehouse full of explosives, Earl and Burt are running away. Earl ducks behind a corregated steel shed, and Earl runs right past him. Takes Earl a second to appreciate how big the blast will be, and they barely make it behind a burm.<! Great the first time and every other time.
pink_faerie_kitten@reddit
"Whew, smells too!" That line by Reba is an inside joke for my family for the last thirty years.
burnafter3ading@reddit
I liked how it was a plot point. Bacon tricks the first one, then Ward asks if it "smells like that 'cause it's dead." I always found that funny.
insomniacandsun@reddit
I’m with you on Tremors. The dynamic between Fred Ward and Kevin Bacon is hilarious.
And where else are you going to see Michael Gross and Reba McEntire fervently defending their rec room against a giant underground monster.
burnafter3ading@reddit
Yup. 2 and 3 were pretty watchable. And, I'll admit, I hung on for the TV series. But they should have just let it go after that. I think the Tremors franchise became a grim prefiguration of what they would eventually do with Jurassic Park.

this movie fucked Merlot so badly and it still hasn’t come back
NoAnnual3259@reddit
The funny thing is (and I didn’t realize this until recently) but I guess the original book makes it clear that he’s not drinking merlot because he doesn’t like the varietal—it’s because he associates merlot with his ex-wife. And meanwhile the market for pinot noir exploded after the film and merlot sales went to shit.
Significant-Rush-129@reddit
I was in my early 20s when this came out and knew nothing about wine so I was like “yes Paul Giamatti, tell me what to drink…”

It’s almost famous’s 25th birthday this weekend! Love this movie and it’s a comforter for me too. Check out the podcast 5 years ago for the 20th where they interview all involved.
That said, o hadn’t realized it, but after the 2024 pres debate I was so deflated realizing it was between 2- 80 year old incoherent men that I went to Netflix afterwards for some reprieve and Bill and Ted’s excellent adventure was there for me. Hadn’t watched it in years, but it was what I needed in terms of dumb, innocent, inane, and comfort.

butterednoodlelovers@reddit
I watched clueless so much as a teen and young adult. And it is a comfort movie. But my actual 30s and 40s re-watched comfort movie is Blast from the Past. I love the house Alicia and Dave's characters live. I've watched the movie just to look at the house interior so much I can immediately identify it when used in other shows. Also Brendan Fraser is so wholesome in this role.
Patty_Curlz274@reddit
I don't think I've seen that movie, but you made me remember that I watched Clueless so much that I talked like valley girl for a solid 15 years

Yes! I watched first season of it, I gotta rewatch the whole thing. It was nice to see her gain notoriety again, in a different phase of life. 😊
Twanlx2000@reddit
Yeah, it’s usually the early 2000s “soundtrack movies” that are comfort watches for me: Almost Famous, Donnie Darko, Garden State, etc.
seahorse_party@reddit
Empire Records. Such a fun, terribly written, soundtracky movie. "This is the Day" by The The during the credits is just so perfect.
Also, different era/feel entirely but: Sophia Coppola's Marie Antoinette may have a perfect soundtrack. The Cure song at the coronation is A Moment. I find that movie really comforting, for the most part, but it makes me want champagne and evil pastries covered in highly elaborate icing.
Twanlx2000@reddit
Empire Records is a regular watch for me. I regrettably never worked in a record store, but was a manager at an independently owned cafe that had that vibe and a diversity of personalities and style.
seahorse_party@reddit
Yes! I worked at a video store that was much more Empire Records than Clerks (thankfully). Everyone there could've been a character in a quirky indie film and each of us got an album/mixtape pick per shift. Although - no veto except the management veto.
ashlyn42@reddit
Did we work at the same place? One of managers was OBSESSED with DMB so that was guaranteed every shift ; another kid was in a 311 coverband, so that got annoying quickly…

I made the mistake of looking up the girls this was based on and was instantly disgusted. These were girls in their low teens being passed from band to band. Look at how many bands wrote songs about under aged girls. Men in their late 20s and 30s who were rich and famous publicizing their proclivities for underaged girls. No wonder the elite don't want to release the Epstein list. Probably a lot of people you won't want to see on it

This is a good one! My mom dated a Thunderbird back in the day so we were very into it. 😆

Wonder Boys: great college/English major/writer movie, great Pittsburgh movie, great takes-place-in-one-weekend movie, great writing, great acting, great direction...just nothing better.

It may sound weird, but the 1996 film of Twelfth Night. With Helena Bonham Carter as Olivia.

So many. The LoTR series when I'm sick, Twilight Series during the Fall, Pride & Prejudice when I need to wind down, or the P&P miniseries for a day of relaxation, other misc. Big Trouble in Little China, Devil Wears Prada, The Other Woman, Edge of Tomorrow, the Martian. I believe the new Dune movies are joining the esteemed collection. Alternatively comfort series to watch are SATC, Buffy once a year, the Americans and Gilmore Girls. I need a lot of comfort.

Fresh Prince is an absolute comfort show. I’ll probably get downvoted for my other two, but they are The Cosby Show and Roseanne. I can disconnect from the people and appreciate the characters.

Almost Famous is a great choice. My personal comfort movie is Fletch.
