It's a cool concept, and funnily enough I've been writing a story that's pretty similar, only it's a primitive AI model that's been left in a dude's garage for 40 years, but not feasible. The Quake 3 "AI" is basically nothing but a set of arrays that's checked (if no player is close then use WASD to locate player, if player is found then aim for X body part and fire until either dies, etc) so there's no capacity for the "AI" to learn cus there's no information being fed to it. It's just a program going through if statements to meet its set conditions. It'll be slightly more complex, but late 90s/early 2000s NPC AI are basically nothing but fancy ifs and whens.
This also still hasn't really changed, even in what's being called AI these days. We've just written programs to generate really elaborate and impenetrable if/else statements for us.

Depends - did you at least establish a fungal network in or around the speak and spell that could eventually grow into the machine, fusing with it and bridging the gaps on what is possible with such limited and fixed hardware?

The story is actually kind of funny.
The bots' objective function must have had something to do with survival because converged on a strategy in which they just didn't fight with one another.

This subreddit is specifically for the discussion of anomalous phenomena from the perspective it may exist. Open minded skepticism is welcomed, close minded debunking is not. Be aware of how skepticism is expressed toward others as there is little tolerance for ad hominem (attacking the person, not the claim), mindless antagonism or dishonest argument toward the subject, the sub, or its community.
