Should I be buying this house?

Those are sanded floorboards done by an amateur. I’d be putting carpet on that unless you want a big project re-sanding, filling in the gaps with decent filler (not crap expanding foam) and re-staining/varnishing. Or you could fork out for a whole new wood floor on top, or parquet if you’re not spending shed loads. Other than that - looks like minor snagging for a property that old. If you like the area, and like the house otherwise, and the surveyor doesn’t find anything structural … go for it? You’ll be there years. Plenty of time to clear it up.

Fun fact - ‘Sutherland’, despite being in the far north of Scotland, takes its name from the Norse for ‘Southern Land’. It was the southernmost part of the Viking Kingdom of Orkney. However, there were Viking dominions much further south, in Dumfries and Galloway - The opposite end of the country. But these were Irish Vikings!

Do you still get angry and feel you missed out on a key life stage during COVID?

Posted by Kopparberg643@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 197 comments

size_matters_not@reddit

While there undoubtedly was an affect, this is scaremongering to a degree. It’s more varied than that. Personal experience has shown me that the youngest cohort has bounced back incredibly well. In fact - some of them *don’t even remember Covid* like adults do. It was just a bunch of stuff that happened which adults dealt with, like everything else. Nbd to them.

Why does the BBC News website disable public comments under any article that represents foreigners charged with raping UK citizens?

Posted by Zealousideal-Cap-383@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 20 comments

size_matters_not@reddit

They do this on all stories involving someone being charged but not yet appearing at court - though they very likely keep comments off during court cases to until a conviction is achieved. This is to do with contempt of court laws, where there are reporting restrictions to stop unwanted information entering the public domain and raising the risk of prejudicing a trial - and causing it to collapse. The laws and rules around reporting criminal legal matters are very strict in the UK, and rightly so - everyone wants to see a free trial, and justice done free from interference.

A 76 year old man survived eight days lost in a remote part of the Scottish Highlands. What could he have done differently other than better preparation to survive and navigate?

Posted by QuantumBleep@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 293 comments

size_matters_not@reddit

He’s an experienced hill walker. If he wasn’t, he’d have died. If you read the article, he wasn’t ‘lost’ lost - he was trying to cross untracked land and got caught by very bad weather. He underestimated the difficulty, but had the right supplies and know-how to survive eight days in torrential rain.

Is this normal? - House seller refusing offers within guide price.

Posted by worldworn@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 118 comments

size_matters_not@reddit

Same. We offered over the asking price by the standard amount for the time - about 10%. They knocked us back expecting us to come back with a better offer after the weekend. But after mulling it over we decided the price we offered was fair and were withdrawing. I think the Estate Agebt put them up to it - because they were suddenly very anxious when they called us on Monday expecting a higher offer, only to get told we were dropping it. And I did get a better house in the end.

Cat owners: why are UK owners so different to US owners?

Posted by Decaying_Cumsplash@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 407 comments

size_matters_not@reddit

OP, you are entirely right - though it’s a hugely unpopular opinion. Cats are not indoor creatures and I hate meeting a ‘flat cat’ driven insane by life-long captivity. It is bottomless cruelty to keep cats - which are outdoor creatures and range over a wide territory when free, the air swimming with scents - indoors for their entire lives. Many cat owners do not want to admit this, but it’s blindingly obvious.

Same. By seniority I should be management, but I’m content at my grade and pay level. I’ve dodged the responsibility for years. I’ve watched managers come and go, each with a new round of bullshit that keeps them in the job until they run out of road, or crack under the pressure. The current one’s going on Friday - smashed to smithereens two years after convincing themselves and others they could step up to a job that requires two people. They were barely intelligible in today’s meeting and I suspect they had been day-drinking (wfh). I made sure to talk first so I could resolve the inter-team issues quickly, knowing they would ramble on and on, pointlessly.

How to solve the issue with horror neighbors?

Brits who were traumatised by it 40 years ago - does "Threads" need the remake that various media reports are promising?

1) I know it’s a film - but it’s also held up as a no-holds-barred, entirely accurate depiction of a nuclear attack on the UK. It traumatised audiences. And I’d agree - the attack is horrifying and the initial aftermath all-to believable. But then it runs out of gas and goes down a sci-fi doomerism route I find undermines the whole premise. I keep expecting Tina Turner to turn up and start singing. But that was the eighties for you, I guess. 2) This is an opinion.

Germany cities were bombed to the ground, and cities in Japan were nuked. We know what happened next, and it wasn’t Mad Max.. The impacts of radiation are felt in the immediate aftermath of a nuclear blast - with a lot of death. The idea it goes on to create a race of grunting mutants belongs in Fallout, not factual attempts at drama.

You know Shakespeare was writing in the 16th century, long before there was state schooling? The idea we’d be grunting cavemen is sci fi nonsense. Threads is good at the immediate aftermath, but its long-term projection was doom-mongering silliness. Everything still rubble and burnt black 20 years after the war? What, all the brushes got nuked? In Germany after their cities were bombed to street level ‘rubble women’ were out the next day clearing the streets. We already know how society responds after apocalypse. Suggesting we revert to savages was daft.
