Why are pubs absolutely rammed on Thursdays? (Confused German in the UK)

An old colleague used to refer to it as Thursday Night Madness. No idea why but I love that it became a thing. British drinking culture plus mundane office jobs in big cities (although maybe changing now? Or more likely to go pub to get out of the house if WFH?) Used to love a Friday night sesh and then not being hungover on a Sunday which was risky for pre work depression.

Are British abroad actually worse than other nationalities, or is it blown out of proportion?

Posted by Cultural-Elk-8346@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 363 comments

schweffrey@reddit

It really depends. I left the UK as a Brit and have met loads of other Brits who haven't integrated or learned the language, won't hang out with locals and just stick to the British diet etc while living abroad. Usually though when I meet people from other countries they're already more in tune with the language and culture. Perhaps it's because they probably know 2 languages from an early age anyway (native + English) The rowdiness that we often hear about from English media usually boils down to our drinking culture and gets exacerbated around football events especially. Like the other commentor said, it depends a lot on the location, age and experience of the people as well.

What are these and why are they all over my house today?

Thinking of relocating to Bristol. Depending on who I talk to, the reactions I've received are: *crinkled nose*, "very creative area," "too much crime," and "less boring than its cousin (Bath)." For anyone who has lived in (or visited Bristol), what did you like (or dislike about it)?

I don't live in the UK anymore but I am always in awe of the music scene in Bristol and wish I visited more. Spent a day working there once, on the hill overlooking the suspension bridge and it was well nice.

Feels like UK stand up comedy is in a pretty weak spot as our nations humour has been battered by over correcting for political correctness. However comedian Fin Taylor seems to be going against the current with that and he had a great bit during some [UK coverage of the NFL](https://youtu.be/3yb0ghSOHU8?is=7ye77c4lDSDcrlUi) His roasting podcast Fin vs The Internet is also amazing. For an old UK stand up bit I love the Kevin Bridges "Forty Quid" bit, plus the rest of his topical jokes about the working class.

Can't stand the dialled down wet wipe humour of British culture and comedians now so I pivoted to USA comics and haven't looked back. Mark Normand, Ari Matti, Shane Gillis all great comics and funny as hell in most settings so there's plenty of content with them online.

Seems to be a more common feeling among many people since COVID I think. I'm 32 and similar. It's quite a blissful feeling to be so comfortable in your house (especially if you rent and don't own) I spend my disposable income on PC upgrades and tech, things that I'm interested in and that I spend a lot of time on/around. It's awesome!

How many hours do you sleep(adults) ?

schweffrey@reddit

I always said once you're sleeping through the night all your other grievances, stresses and issues surrounding navigating raising a child become so much easier. The sleep situation is a real killer especially if you're both in the trenches. There's a lot to be said for having clear and structured duties for each parent so that at least one of you is sleeping well during the night who can then tackle more in the day, or having family/community help. It's very popular these days for a big push to absolute equality in responsibilities raising the child but there's a lot to be said for the Old school system but with new generation mindset /approach (dad more involved but still mum handling the care for the majority) . For the sake of "fairness" I guarantee 9/10 times it's not worth the pressure it puts on both parents.

If new titles require DLSS & Frame Gen for even 5080's to do 60fps at 4k, what's going to happen in the next few years?

A smart purchase will always be one step looking ahead, in my opinion. If I was on 1080p monitor currently for example, I'd be shopping for a 4k monitor and not a 1440p. Otherwise you'll find yourself in a cycle / loop . Better to save and spend a bit extra as soon as you can justify it to get a 4k monitor with a decent refresh rate.

How would you upgrade this system?

Ah interesting! Battered cod is the only seafood I can stomach so I've no idea about other fish dishes - but I'd recommend giving it another try with fresh lemon drizzled!

Why does the lemon wedge set off alarm bells? I've not lived in the UK for quite a few years now but I always get a lemon wedge with fish and chips and I think it's an amazing addition!

Walking isn't really going to do that much for either of your targets, you need to be raising your heart rate so try and combine it with a short jog. Couch to 5k is a good resource to help with this

You say footballers but all sports people do it, it's a somewhat necessary part of intense exercise. I understand it's not pleasant to witness (like blowing a snotty nose or coughing up lung butter) but it serves a purpose and is intentional. Spitting for no reason while roaming the street though, can get in the bin!
