American tourists sing loudly on the streets, disturbing locals from their sleep. This has caused a debate in Greece about growing anti-tourist sentiment. Thoughts?

Most annoying is that they started confidently singing without knowing more than a couple of lines. It’s: Yes, I've been brokenhearted Blue since the day we parted Why, why did I ever let you go? Mamma mia, now I really know My, my, I could never let you go If they mangled even this on repeat around my town I’d want them deported

Why has the UK been left behind for 4K HDR coverage of the Olympics where other countries seem to have it readily available?

Posted by ChineseHappyPeople@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 115 comments

mcwaff@reddit

The Discovery deal is bad for Team GB and bad for the UK public. So little coverage on the BBC compared to previous Olympics has to be bad for their athletes sponsorships. And will viewers really sign up for Discovery just for the Games? In future I hope they legislate to force the Olympics onto terrestrial channels.

Do you have quite intense interests outside work? Could you talk for hours about them? Does sudden change make you feel overwhelmed emotionally? Do you avoid eye contact when speaking to others? If all this sounds like you, you might be autistic, which is actually pretty cool. Have a chat with your GP and get yourself assessed. If not, scroll on and have a nice day :-)

Generally I’ve got very little brand loyalty. You can’t if you shop at Aldi. But I will make an exception for anything meat-free. Supermarket meat-free is nasty. Ground coffee. All chocolate. Lager. Baileys.

To everyone who has visited Liverpool, what did you think of it ?

mcwaff@reddit

We visited with kids. Loved that so much of the centre is car free. The Bluecoat Centre was a highlight. The shops around Liverpool One are decent. Lots of good food options. Plus there’s the Albert Dock which is a bit quirky. If it had a good play area near the centre or a science museum I’d rate it higher than Manchester city centre, which is cracking.

These are your personal details so GDPR is relevant. Was your data collected for specified, explicit and legitimate purposes? Doesn't sounds like it. Will they keep your data only for the time needed? No, it'll probably stay in a drawer forever Will they keep your data up to date, or give you a way to update it? Doubtful. Is your data being kept safely? Probably not. Did you agree to any of this? You get the point. They shouldn't be doing it.

What are your thoughts on people who go on holiday alone?

I took myself off to Krakow last year. I get some weird reactions when I tell people about it. To be honest it did feel odd being alone on holiday, especially when it came to eating out, but it's mainly liberating and relaxing. Being a bit introverted it kind of suited me, and I enjoyed my own company. I'd recommend doing some brief group activity like a walking tour or cooking class just to exercise your social muscles while you're there. And take a book, of course.

What's the best city to live in the UK as a young person?

Posted by MRSNLT@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 233 comments

mcwaff@reddit

Do you want to live close enough to pop home at weekends? If so, I’d recommend Brighton or Norwich. If you want to live further away and have access to more shops, culture, job opportunities, try Bristol, Leeds or Manchester. If making friends is most important try somewhere smaller, friendlier and pubier like York. I’d avoid anywhere under about 200K population because everyone knows everyone and you’ll always feel like an outsider. And flat share - more than anything. Do not live alone if you want to meet people.

Middle age men, fun things you can do at weekends by yourself?

Go explore a new city on your own. I went to Krakow for the weekend at a time of year when flights and airbnbs are cheap. Feels odd being alone at first then you get used to it, then you start enjoying your own company. I’m thinking of doing Vienna next.

Companies owned by investors, which is nearly all of them, have to grow profits and once you’ve tried expanding your market the next best option is to cut costs. This usually results in lower quality. But it’s not inevitable. If together we refuse to buy products that have dropped in quality the only way back to profitability is to return to the original formula. So I guess the TLDR is we could stop it and we don’t.

A full solar eclipse. I was living in France and we hired a car and drove to Reims to see the full thing. We spent the final few minutes bombing around the countryside trying to find a gap in the clouds and we just in time did it. It was eerie with the birds suddenly flying back to their nests. I don’t think I’ll get another chance in my lifetime.
