What tips do you have for keeping your house cool in these temperatures?

Insulation. My house is a comfortable 18c today with the windows open. Toasty in the winter too as we barely turn the heating on and when we do it's low. Sorry not super practical for today but honestly, insulation is the only real answer. Get a high powered fan and create a draft from opening windows and/or doors when it's cooler outside.

What causes stuff at night in your house to make a noise?

My puppy makes quite a few noises in his sleep and also seems to have a 3am licking session several times a week. This morning it was spew at 530am because he likes to eat shit (actual shit)

Everything on subscription. Want to buy a face cream, spammed with offers of subscription. Want to order coffee beans, subscription. Dog food, subscription. Then if you put the item in your shopping cart, some companies default to the subscription so before you know it you're getting dog food every four weeks. Sure they make it slightly cheaper for you but many make it so hard to cancel. I just want my dog food and coffee beans without being hassled to get it on subscription.

Do most people use WhatsApp instead of having a mobile phone contract?

I use WhatsApp for messaging but I don't like the call quality whereas most of my friends and colleagues refuse to call me on anything but WhatsApp. I don't quite get it personally. I have one friend who will call while she s out walking and I can only heat a quarter of what shes saying. It's worse when it goes through Bluetooth. It also could be that I live in the middle of no where so signal is just shit anyway but personally I don't get the WhatsApp love to make calls.

Why are more couples having children without getting married?

What is your age? This seems generational and more expected from older folks. There is very little benefit marriage offers if you are both functioning adults.y partner and I have been together 15 year and have a child and a house and I'm not sure what marriage would offer that isn't already there. Yes if he dies I can get widow benefit bit he's already arranged financial support in the event of his untimely death.

Bluestone in West Wales. I know you don't want the long drive but if you stay for a week it's worth it. My partner and I took our son and cousins for a weekend and the big kids had just as much fun as the little ones. The pool was included and exhausted us beyond our imaginations. I paid for the laser tag and bowling. For little kids the soft play was amazing and free. They also have bike trails and you can do off site stuff too if you want. We stayed a long weekend but easily could have stayed a week. The cabins are also self catering. My inlaws did Centre Parks after we did Bluestone and said Bluestone had more free/included options.

I love an olive oil soap. Olivio is a common brand I can get fairly easily in local shops but there are many brands out there. Or I like Friendly Soaps. They sell a peppermint one that is nice. If you're a bargain hunter they sell scrappy seconds on their website at a deep discount.

CEO issued me a “formal warning” for allegedly missing a message; and role is unpaid?

Posted by Business_Badger1995@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 376 comments

impossiblejane@reddit

Take this as your warning that this person is a vile human being. To give a "formal warning" for missing an email rather than just query if you'd seen his email is a massive dick move and his vileness won't stop at this incident. If he was a decent person the communication would have gone: Boss: have you seen that email I sent you yesterday? You: no sorry, I seem to have missed it by mistake. Let me go check my emails now and read it. Sorry about that. Boss: No worries mate. Can you reply as soon as you've seen it please? The boss probably never even sent the email. Also stop doing work for free.

Take a male with you. I hate that I wrote that but you're female and young. There are so many unconscious biases with humans and being female and young are two that often mean you get dismissed. Sadly I remember when my son was young I took him to A&E because something just wasn't right. My son got treatment and we were made to stay overnight but the doctor was extremely dismissive of me and refused to tell me what was going on until my partner arrived in the morning and he was almost like a different doctor.

What to do about assistance dog fraud?

Posted by Equal-Sun-3729@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 12 comments

impossiblejane@reddit

There is a very vulnerable family in our town that does this. I used to volunteer in a shop before they had the dog and I've seen them around town when they got the dog (non official assistance dog gear) and then it's progressed to shoes on the dog and then fake assistance dog gear. You can just tell. And the other day they had the dog in B&M and the behavior of the dog gave away that it's not a properly trained and official dog but no one challenges the family because everyone feels sorry for them.

If I bring my puppy to my MIL house, she's very happy to have him but refuses to let him drink or eat off plates a human would use. Even if it goes in the dishwasher. My partner used to be the same way until our puppy stole his heart.

Do you celebrate Pancake Day? (Today!) If so, what toppings do you go for?

Another night of "what to make for dinner" and my son reminded me it was pancake day. I had all the ingredients in my cupboard and I asked if he would help and he said yes. The fact that my 13 yo made a suggestion for dinner and helped fook is the celebration. I even threw in an RE lesson about pancake day (my grandparents are Catholic) so he can store it away in his memory banks and do the same with his kids one day.

I made more interest in the bank last year. I'm not convinced it's a good deal but my partner loves the thrill of possibly winning big.

Bf tells me married couples in UK don't do joint bank accounts. Is that true?

Posted by No-Equal7322@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 940 comments

impossiblejane@reddit

My mum always taught me to keep my money separate. My partner and I of 15 years never had a joint account. It's really individual. But we also manage bills very fairly and we don't argue about money so I've never felt I needed one to ensure fairness. But everyone's reason for or against is different.

How do you get out of bed in the morning?

Posted by cornishyinzer@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 554 comments

impossiblejane@reddit

Don't look at your phone until you've got out of bed. For me the thought of poverty and no job is the actual thing that gets me out of bed but then I give myself time to have a coffee and read on my phone after I'm out of bed. If I'm particularly struggling to get out of bed, I turn the light on. I also have a 4 month old puppy so that also helps. Going outside for wees and poos does wake me up and I'd rather go outside than clean it up in the house.

I just got a puppy and any walk we take is a minefield of what he's going to put in his mouth next. I've noticed that a lot of the neighborhood rubbish is from rubbish bags being tipped open by animals and birds before it's collected and then just gets blown in the wind. At last black bin bag collection (every 3 weeks) my neighbour's bags were destroyed by the birds because he put food and unwashed recycling in the bags and the birds had a feast but left a huge mess. In that instance I reported it to the council.

What’s keeping you awake?

Only seeing this now at 630am but I was up 3x with the puppy as he had an upset tummy. As exhausted as I am I enjoy going outside in the stillness of the night to listen to sounds (wind, birds, an owl, an occasional plane, a distant car) and see the stars. I often wonder who else is awake and wonder what they are doing. My neighbor always has his kitchen light on

What British tradition or custom do you think will disappear in the next 10 years?

American here. Can confirm we'd get corrected all the time if we said "Can I..." Not sure that the example works as something that is particularly American but more just bad manners that have snuck in over the years. When I was growing up I was not allowed to wear hats inside and I insist on that with my son but it seems I'm in the minority of people that think it's rude.

No major disasters but Christmas hits differently when you have a teenager. I miss my bubbly, over-excited little boy on Christmas. Now I have to wake him up and all he wants is clothes and grunts. I almost started crying when Stick Man was on TV today as that was his favourite book as a little boy.
