What’s your favorite tea brand?
Posted by LadyMotoBang@reddit | AskABrit | View on Reddit | 315 comments
I’m an American and I’ve recently begun drinking a nice hot mug of English tea in the afternoon after work ( … honestly it’s more like 3 mugs). I’ve been going through random assortments of tea of all different brands I’ve accumulated as gifts and curiosity purchases. I definitely enjoy breakfast tea and earl grey the most. My question is what are some of your favorite brands? It’s time for me to buy some more and I want to find my go-to moving forward- I’m addicted to my little cup of comfort in the evenings. Thanks in advance!

One more vote for Yorkshire tea here.
Historical_Owl2154@reddit
Yorkshire Gold
Nicky2512@reddit
Another post - apparently Horniman’s tea ( slightly unfortunate name these days ) was the first company to market packaged tea in the 1800,s subsequently taken over by Lyon’s but still available today - I’ve never heard of it but my husband remembers it from his childhood and has just googled it
Jojo6167@reddit
You can't beat Yorkshire Tea
beseeingyou18@reddit
One of us! One of us!
Anyway, Yorkshire Tea gets my vote.
Betelgeaux@reddit
Unless they use a microwave then they most certainly are not!
scootertrash@reddit
American tea drinker here, I only learned about my fellow my countrymen using the microwave to heat their water from reading British sub Reddits like this one. I use a kettle on the stove top. But I’ve been asking people and yes, they do use the microwave. And I’m sorry to say I’m not a fan of Yorkshire, a little too earthy for me. I drink Twinings English Breakfast tea.
MalignEntity@reddit
If I'm drinking bagged tea, I prefer Twinings too. I've recently moved over to loose leaf Assam, from Gillards of Bath, and it makes the most incredible cuppa
rhrjruk@reddit
I’m pretty sure if it’s posh tea it’s not a “cuppa”
Nicky2512@reddit
I’m considered posh by my contemporaries because I use a teapot ( warmed first of course ) and a tea cosy. I call the result, a “cuppa”
MalignEntity@reddit
I'm in the North, its usually a "brew"
kaskirM68@reddit
The North is big. Southeast Northumberland here and we tend to go with cuppa
Dr_Frankenstone@reddit
I read your comment in a Scouse accent in my head.
HailArtGoddess@reddit
Try the Yorkshire Gold variety. The red is earthy but the gold is sublime. I learned about it in this sub. I have a lot of tea varieties but I find I consistently choose the Yorkshire Gold. Some honey and a tiny bit of cream makes it amazing.
No-Bid-4262@reddit
Cream???
Nicky2512@reddit
That’s how tea used to be taken - “cream or lemon vicar? “ It’s also the reason why the jug in a lot of china tea services is so small - it was for cream, not milk.
ActiveBat7236@reddit
The music stopped and an entire nation rested their cutlery down at that point. And hang on a minute, was honey mentioned too?
HashBrownsAreNice@reddit
Bear on mind that most 'proper' English teas aren't actually designed to brew for nearly as long as it says. Brits aren't waiting around 3-5 mins for a cup of tea! You only do that for fancy stuff or weak stuff.
The vast majority of Yorkshire Tea drunk gets a minute at best, and the people making it know that.
scootertrash@reddit
Thanks, I’ll try that. I usually let mine brew for 4 minutes, anything longer and it’s too cold.
Time-Mode-9@reddit
A minute???!!! 5 stirs, and three squeezes.
unprofessional_widow@reddit
I stir 25 times.
unprofessional_widow@reddit
Also a good choice, you can stay in our gang 😜
Mouffcat@reddit
I prefer Twinings EB to Yorkshire, it's smoother.
Sea_Huckleberry_7790@reddit
It's to do with your electricity infrastructure only offering 120v or something. It isn't necessarily bad, but it simply can't cope with an electric kettle like we use... At least it's not a pit in the garden with an open flame. But breakfast tea is definitely the win. Although you can get a "malt brew" from Yorkshire tea I think that tastes like biscuits.... amazing stuff!
Coolnamesarehard@reddit
Exiled Brit here. A kettle in the USA works just fine. It just takes about four times as long to boil the same amount of water. Which is desperately annoying, but not fatal.
Ok_Coconut_3364@reddit
We have a SMEG electric kettle and it's equally as quick as the ones we had in the UK.
Coolnamesarehard@reddit
Ooh can you tell me the wattage on the label? Ours is showing signs of age so would like to replace it with a better one when it dies.
MrPhyshe@reddit
Don't they have 220V for the (clothes) driers? Could you use a spur off that?
Sea_Huckleberry_7790@reddit
I think it's to do with the 120v which is why they go caveman over a flame. I think I'd find it fatal but I'm a tea fiend!
AmazonComplex@reddit
Specifically, Yorkshire Gold.

New_Pop_8911@reddit
Drinking a ringtons English breakfast as I type, given in to the cough from hell and got out of bed for a bit. On the rare occasions we've run out (illness/bad weather/tea man quitting=missed delivery) we'll drink Yorkshire. Generally like to keep a back up of 100-200 just in case but there's a note on the system to leave 4 packs on the doorstep if we're out haha.
Silly_Hurry_2795@reddit
Thank you I couldn't remember the name in my post

The special secret is to only boil freshly drawn water, because stale water can include debris from previous boilings. Yes, it’s hot to be Twinings breakfast tea.

Lady Grey is quite nice - bit lighter than an Earl Grey.
Dull_Banana5349@reddit
I love Lady Grey, it's like a cup of sunshine. Yorkshire decaf is my standard brew but I love a Lady Grey occasionally. Yorkshire tea bedtime brew is lovely too.
(Don't hate me for the decaf, I have to be very careful about my caffeine intake.)
Correct-Goose1158@reddit
My mum refuses to drink Earl grey but loves Lady grey. I think it has more orange in it?
gnu_andii@reddit
It's Earl Grey with orange & lemon added. I prefer it to Earl Grey too. Earl Grey tends to leave a dry taste in my mouth.
captainsittingduck@reddit
I used to love PG Tips pyramid bags but the brand was bought from Unilever and the new owners changed/cheapened the blend and ditched the pyramids. The new blend is utter filth. I switched to Yorkshire Tea a couple of years ago. It's fine but not as good as the old pyramid PG. Clipper tea is also ok but I rarely see it.
Southernbeekeeper@reddit
I mostly prefer twinnings english breakfast. However, I think the biggest difference is price. All the "cheap" brands ars pretty bad. If you pay just a little bit more and get clipper or Dorset tea or something the difference is huge.
jjgill27@reddit
Twinings Strong English Breakfast is elite.
Weary_Judgment_9871@reddit

Proper loose, leaf tea such as Oolong. But for a quick mug of tea I like Sainsbury's Gold Label.
yourefunny@reddit
Hmm... Most tea consumed in the UK is black tea with different blends from all over the world.
This question is very tribalised here in the UK! You will get people who a staunch supporters of only one tea. Comparable to sports teams. Yorkshire tea is very popular. My personal favourite is Barry's tea from over in Ireland. The red one is the normal, but the black one has more punch.
Most importantly how are you making your tea. You had better not be microwaving it!!! I know your electric output sucks and a kettle takes for ever to boil. So get a stove top kettle. Pour the water in, not boiling. Just before or leave it for a moment after it has boiled. Directly on to the tea bag. Let it steep for a minute. Then remove and add milk. Others will have a different order. But this is the correct way.
I will have an Early Grey a couple times a week. Barry's or coffee for me throughout the day.
the_badgerman@reddit
Straight in the cup? A minute? Come on we're better than that. A pot. And don't rush it. At least 3 minutes. I mean it says that on the box.
nemmalur@reddit
Electric kettles in North America aren’t as slow as they used to be.
yourefunny@reddit
Oh I wasn't aware. My mate lives over there and still complains. Maybe he needs an upgrade.
No-Dinner-3715@reddit
I’m a Yorkshire tea man, had Barry’s during a business trip to Ireland earlier this year, it’s not for me, wasn’t strong enough I had to use two bags.
yourefunny@reddit
Fair enough. I think I prefer a weaker tea and a stronger coffee. Plus Barry's is from the same town as my family so it is a bit nostalgic.
HalfAgony-HalfHope@reddit
Yorkshire. Winnings breakfast tea is nice too. Dont microwave it.
the_badgerman@reddit
Tetley. Use a pot though, whatever the brand. 1 bag for each person, one for the pot. Warm the pot. Warm the mugs. There's no rush here, enjoy the ritual, take your time. Don't rush a brew.
katharinelouise@reddit
Yorkshire Tea for sure! I want to try Yorkshire Gold sometime but I worry I'll like it too much - I buy my Yorkshire Tea in the big bags, and I've not seen the big bags of Gold available! 😂
I refuse to drink Typhoo.

Yorkshire Tea too, they do the best decaf as well.

DrMoneybeard@reddit
I lived in the UK for five years and my biggest cultural adoption is a strong opinion that Yorkshire is the superior tea for everyday. I have had the same debate- if I go gold what if I can’t go back? I don’t know if I’m ready to bump myself up into a new tea bracket.
Dense-Coat-4280@reddit
I prefer the regular Yorkshire, the Gold doesn't have as much oomph.
auntie_eggma@reddit

creepinghippo@reddit
Marks & Spencer’s Decaffeinated is perfect.
Green-Froyo-7533@reddit
If you like more depth of flavour try Tea India Masala Chai. All the strength of a breakfast tea with added spices. So comforting I absolutely love it. Make it the exact same way you would a breakfast tea using milk after steeping the bag for a few mins and adding honey to sweeten really elevates it over standard sugar / sweetener.
ukbenn@reddit
Teabags should be illegal.
Loose leaf darjeeling. No milk. Brewed in a pot. Drunk from a cup and saucer. This is the only true way and I am not taking any questions at this difficult time. Okbye.
RudeEntry8219@reddit
Mate, you're trolling!
The great thing about tea in the UK is that even the cheap stuff is decent. I buy Waitrose (stay with me!) own-brand budget-range tea and it's absolutely fine.
Noeggs70@reddit
I've recently discovered a local tea company and it's ruined other teas for me. The Herb Garden, Ivegill, Cumbria. Second choice would be Bird and Blend. Both do online sales
Noeggs70@reddit

Ceylon tea for me (they still call it that, not Sri Lanka) over that from any other country.
purquoy@reddit
Absolutely no question for me.
Brew Tea Co. Ltd, English breakfast tea.
Distinctive bright yellow box. Loose leaf or bags, one of the few teas where the bags are as good as the loose leaf. Proper rolled leaf and no tea dust in the bags. Relatively expensive compared to supermarket teas, but worth it.
You can get it online, though my local Waitrose also carries it.
And now I'm in the mood for a brew . . .
OkWing5717@reddit
Decaf Yorkshire Tea.
court996@reddit
Sainsbury’s Assam is the very best. Blows Yorkshire and all the others into the weeds.
robav1963@reddit
Twinings or Pukka Earl Grey. If desperate a cheaper brand if Earl Grey. It’s the only tea I like, znd I’m not a fan of coffee either.
Puzzled_Caregiver_46@reddit
Yorkshire Gold for the win.
landwomble@reddit
Assuming you mean "normal" tea rather than a niche like Early Grey etc it's Ringtons Kenyan Gold. Like Yorkshire Gold but better and a man in a little van delivers to my house along with a choice of nice biscuits.
Subaruchick99@reddit
Has to be Yorkshire.
obstagoons_playlist@reddit
It depends how you are drinking it. If you are drinking black (as in no milk not the type of tea leaves) and/or black with lemon you go for "posh" teas like earl grey and english breakfast. If you are drinking milk and sugar tea like the average brit you want yorkshire tea, pg tips, tetley or typhoo, everyone has their own preference but those are the most common 4 where I am based at least. Buy a kettle if you dont have one, boil water on the stove in a pot if you cant get to a kettle, water boiled in microwaves makes tea taste rancid.
curiouslyhungry@reddit
In my opinion, as a Brit in Florida, your best bet for tea somewhat available in the US is Yorkshire Gold Blend.
In the UK I like Twinings English Breakfast, but less impressed with it over here. I suspect a different recipe.
Drinking tea away from your home here, your biggest barrier is that the water is not hot enough
gnu_andii@reddit
You get the temperature problem in the UK too when people make it from boiled water that is also used for coffee. The water for tea should be freshly boiled.
Timely_Egg_6827@reddit
Fortnum and Mason caravan tea but don't drink tea too often. Otherwise Lady Grey tea.
AuntMarysFrog@reddit

Timely_Egg_6827@reddit
Worked near the Tea and Coffee museum too long - tried a lot of teas. Lapsang souchong good too but harder to find a suitable occasion for drinking. It is best with lots of tea.
Did have a great bottle of sparkling tea recently.
gnu_andii@reddit
I used to have Twining's Lapsang but it seems to have disappeared over the last few years and I haven't had a smokey tea in a while. I'll have to try out some of this Caravan tea.
pab6407@reddit
Lapsang is the perfect accompaniment to sticky toffee pudding, smoke and toffee just seem to go together, although that association may have been forged eating bonfire night toffees as a child.
Silly_Hurry_2795@reddit
Is the caravan tea a lightly smoked one?
My usual supplier died a few years ago and I've been living in lapsang alone since
Timely_Egg_6827@reddit
It is a mix of keemun and oolong teas so it is a lot more mellow than lapsang but with smokey hints. F*M also do smokey Earl Grey which is lapsang with bergamot.

Yorkshire tea, all day, every day. The moment I started drinking Yorkshire tea my life changed, you might think I’m joking but I’m not. I used to want Scottish independence, thought I wouldn’t miss anything, until Yorkshire tea.

LolaWithTheGreenEyes@reddit
Blends of tea can taste very different around the country because of the water. Some areas have soft water, others hard. I use Yorkshire Hardwater tea (green packet) because the other Yorkshire blends just dont taste as good as they should because I have hard water.

My favourite "basic" tea, available in the supermarket, is Clipper, mostly because it's just bloody good tea, but also because their packaging is 100% recyclable, and the bags are unbleached.
My favourite "posh" tea is TWG's 1837 blend. There's a TWG store in London, opposite the M&Ms store.
If I'm in Cornwall, then I only drink Smugglers Brew

Twinnings strong English breakfast tea is amazing but it's expensive, totally worth it for a wee treat every now and then. Day to day I use punjana (made by Thompsons in N.ireland) or Thompson's Irish breakfast tea. I've tried quite a few other brands like Pg tips(awful), Yorkshire (decent) and even most of the supermarket own labels but they're just okay. It'll be down to your own personal taste, Keep trying different ones to you find one that suits your palate and stick with it. Enjoy the journey!

I try to avoid getting tea from the families of Syrian dictators.
(I presume you meant Assam)
Amazing_Fennel_1542@reddit
Oops my mistake. It's a small Indian company called Ahmad Tea :)
Negative_Map4650@reddit
Ahmad do a nice earl gray, mix it 50/50 with their black tea and enjoy without milk, otherwise https://amzn.eu/d/06xj4VL4 is a good solid base tea unless you can source the mixed box of Fortnum and Mason and discover a habit that will ruin you 😂
robthablob@reddit
That makes sense too. I'm partial to Assam myself - it seems to me like a better version of things like English Breakfast. Simple, straightforward tea, without being overloaded with Tannins.
Amazing_Fennel_1542@reddit
No it's a small Indian company named Assad tea
WildsmithRising@reddit
I am not a fan of ordinary tea, but when I do drink it, Yorkshire Tea is the one I like the most.
I love a good cup of earl grey, and for that, Marks and Spencer's own brand is my favourite. I am a philistine so brew it for three minutes, or three and a half, then add a bit of milk. It's delicious.

For the love of all that is remotely good in the world Please stop with the Yorkshire tea we all know they lie and it's not from yorkshire, this is due to Yorkshire being mostly boggy peat tea won't grow there, on top of this all those bogs and peat stained water means the only tea they could taste is this Yorkshire tea. I'd like to point out to anyone who hasn't tried Yorkshire tea you can emulate the taste and after taste by finding the nearest proper brick building and licking one of the bricks for about ten minutes. Remember do it relatively high up the wall or it may taste like rooibos
Lancashire tea is where it's at if you would like a gentle brew
But basically pick twinnigs or the ones who deliver (forgotten the name) find a blend you like and stick with it.
Just be warned you can't actually buy any twinnings in Russia, china, north Korea or Cuba because all proper tea is theft.

OK, so good tea is loose leaf, packaged in a smallish bag with a handwritten label and comes from a specialist shop with 20 boxes behind the counter, sold by a nerd distinguishable from a university professor because professors don't usually run shops.
But acceptable branded tea comes from Yorkshire Tea for everyday drinking or Tea Pigs if you're being more fancy.

Yorkshire, Tetley, or Thompson's.

Ireland here, but I always stock up on tea when I’m in the UK - so many more choices! My go-tos are Bird & Blend Builders Breakfast and Great British Cuppa, with their Chocolate Digestives as a weekend treat for dunking biscuits in.
For my ‘fancy’ tea I go to Postcard Teas a few times a year and get the really good stuff from small producers in China & Japan - Ureshino Breakfast is amazing. Their Family Tea is also a great go-to for loose tea, ditto London Roast.
For ‘supermarket’ tea, Yorkshire Tea is good, but Bird & Blend is still my main teamaker of choice.

British people don’t drink tea the way you think. They just drink black tea with milk the same way people in other countries drink coffee they don’t have different brands and types of tea that they discuss and enjoy. They usually stick to one brand of black tea (usually Yorkshire tea) that they drink with milk and sugar for their entire lives.
RevolutionaryRuin968@reddit
At the moment, PG Tips, but love Sainsbury's Red Label, too.

Ok so everyone is saying Yorkshire and they're not wrong but if you want a primo tea experience go to the Steenberg's website and order yourself some Lover's Leap Orange Pekoe. It's a whole different game.

I didn't notice this was posted on AskABrit - maybe I shouldn't have answered!!!
But I was born/raised...and still live in Texas.
My parents always had a big pitcher of Lipton's cold iced-tea, and sometimes we all stick with what we were brought up on.
It's very refreshing, but I only drink it sweet with a lot of ice.
I've bought other kinds of teas that I've drank warm, but it's not really a thing for me.

txe4@reddit
Yorkshire is great if you like a strong tea. It lacks any kind of subtlety (it's from Yorkshire...) but if you want a good strong cup of tea it's the go-to.
Taylors of Harrogate is generally good, at the upper end in price.
Twinings are mostly decent too, though their Earl Grey has tasted like shit for several years.
The mass-market brands (Tetley, PG Tips) are much of a muchness and all Basically Fine, as are the UK supermarkets' own-brand teas. 90% of Brits wouldn't be able to tell the difference between them.
Being American, the secret is: Bigelows sell a hundred different dreadful herbal/flavoured things, but 2 bags of Bigelows black tea in a decent mug, made with proper boiling water, is actually just-about acceptable. It's not great but you can get it everywhere. If you're adding milk and sugar, certainly, you'll never know it's not British.
Just avoid Liptons, which is all terrible. Liptons Yellow Label, served as a dry bag next to a small cup of barely-warmed water, is the Englishman's nightmare.
Cov_massif@reddit
Yorkshire tea, no contest

A consideration is whether they use bags that are home compostable. They all used to be plastic but it's improving.
