Based on OP's definition: - Bruceton Mills, WV. I was only there briefly (no more than 10 minutes) to park my car and let my friends know where I was. We all were coming back from Louder than Life 2025. - Catlettsburg, KY. I parked for about an hour so friend & I can get cigarettes and water. We also wanted to make sure our other friend was okay as he was exhuasted. We all were coming back from Louder than Life 2025.

To those with younger siblings/cousins, how protective of them are you?

I (26M) have 2 younger sisters (22F, 15F). I let them make their own decisions (good or bad). However, I also would give them another option for them to consider. Physically though, I cannot do much as we are 200 miles apart.

The only thing I remember about this book is that it felt like 3 separate stories converging towards 1 singular plot. However, I last read this like 10 years ago in high school for fun.

Being from NYC, "the city" only refers to Manhattan. Living in Baltimore, "the city" refers to Baltimore City. We also have Baltimore County, which is separate.

I live alone (26 M) in a small 1-bedroom apartment. I have a full-time job which takes 40 hrs of my week (8 hrs a day, 5 times a day). Hobbies: soccer & concerts mainly, I usually play soccer at least 1 - 3 times a week. Concerts is usually at least once a week. Sometimes, I also hang out with concert friends outside of concerts. I am lucky I can take public transportation to get to where I do. If necessary, I will Uber or get a rental car for a show.

In New York (NYC in particular), it's definitely uncommon to hear terms of endearment from strangers. In Maryland, I probably hear it in Western & Southern MD.

What's the last day of High School like in the USA?

It depends. For my high school, once we got our report cards, we leave the school's premises. I'd then spend time with friends for a few hours after before going home.

Did your school ever had a non-federal or non-state holiday? Unique or generous holidays and that sort?

Brooklyn - Queens Day. Back then, only kids whose schools were in Brooklyn & Queens had the day off. Now, it's city wide but it's parent-teacher conference. Also, Diwali became a NYC public school holiday in lieu of Brooklyn-Queens Day, I think.

Do derbys exist in american sports?

Posted by Hyde1505@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 464 comments

iftair@reddit

We call those rivalries here. Some of the famous ones in professional sports are Mets/Yankees, Knicks/Celtics, Ravens/Steelers, Eagles/Cowboys. Some are created due to circumstances such as Grizzles vs Clippers, Spurs, OKC or Trae Young vs Knicks fans. Though, they do not feel as passionate as soccer rivalries outside the US. Our close equivalent would be college sports. I know Ohio State vs UMich, UCLA vs USC, Alabama vs Auburn, Clemson vs South Carolina, Duke vs UNC are huge and gets really intense.

Is studying a foreign language part of your high school curriculum?

Posted by Dwashelle@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 364 comments

iftair@reddit

In NYC, it depends on the school. I studied French for 2 years in middle school (only Honors and Regent students - creme de la creme academically can take French), took the regents for it, aced it, then got placed into French in high school (the alternative language is Spanish). My middle sis' high school offered Mandarin.

I live in Maryland. I just did a test to name all of their 24 counties and was able to get 20 of them. I'm from NYC. I can probably name between 20 to 35 counties in NYS. As for pointing them on a map, it's a lot easier for me to do so for MD than for NY.

What part of your city is the "Almaden" of your city?

In NYC, I'd say Staten Island. It's suburban, conservative, and people living there are proportionally well-off. If you live in Staten Island, you're likely to just stay there. Culturally, people say it's closer to New Jersey than NYC. In Baltimore, I have to say either Harbor East or Roland Park. Maybe Canton.

Why do so many Americans go by nicknames/shortened names?

Posted by Dietpepsilover13@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 783 comments

Personally I have 3 nicknames: - One is my dak nam, which is only exclusive for family members and close friends, mainly the ones I grew up with. - I then have 2 separate variations of my names where people can call me either or. They're close to my legal name. I mainly do it because I have seen people struggle to pronounce my name.

What are you shamelessly American about?

Posted by 24gritdraft@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 3820 comments

iftair@reddit

- Air Conditioners. It gets sticky and muggy during summers. Now if we had temperate weathers consistently during spring & summer, then I'd be fine going without ACs. - The Imperial System. I will use the metric system when appropriate but the US Imperial System is ingrained in my brain. - Taking chances & leaps of fate. Growing up, I always thought I'd be in NYC my entire life as that is where my family resides. 2022, my only job offer came from Baltimore, MD. I said "fuck it, I'll move". I got my drivers license 3 days before moving out of NYC. I learn how to navigate around a new area I've never been to before and what I can do on my own. - Being open to other cultures. This is a nation of melting pot or rather it's supposed to be. I love trying different ethnic food (i.e. Yemeni, Italian, Mexican, El Salvadorian, American - Chinese) and seeing different kinds of people tolerating/befriending one another. Unfortunately a noticeable portion of the US is homogenous and are not like this. - Soccer is still my favorite sport but American football and baseball are decent. I've become a Ravens fan along with liking Orioles and Mets.
