My fellow Americans which of our many Presidents would you say is the most famous?

Many
CH11DW@reddit
The real question is who is the least famous president?
Substantial_Slip4667@reddit (OP)
McKinley
CH11DW@reddit
When asked who do they think of when they hear the word President? Most are going to think of the current president first. Then followed by either Washington or Lincoln, then maybe some recent former presidents, and then probably Kennedy.
blaspheminCapn@reddit
The first one
saggywitchtits@reddit
John Hanson?
PhysicsEagle@reddit
Despite Hanson’s descendants’ claims, John Hanson was neither the first president of Congress (Peyton Randolf), the first president of Congress after the Declaration of Independence was adopted (John Hancock), the first president of Congress under the Articles of Confederation (Samuel Huntington), nor the first person elected to the office (Thomas McKean). He is simply the first person to serve a full one-year term as president of Congress under the articles of confederation.
SchmitzBitz@reddit
I don't think that many people are familiar with Peyon Randolf.
Landwarrior5150@reddit
Samuel Huntington?

Lincoln or Washington are probably the top 2. JFK, Obama, and the Roosevelts are probably up there.

JFK and Lincoln. For obvious reasons
Last_Question_7359@reddit
Trump and it’s not close. Not saying for good reason but go abroad. Say you’re American. Trump will be brought up immediately. Plus he was a worldwide celebrity before being president.
o2msc@reddit
Famous, as in worldwide famous? Then it’s definitely Trump. I can assure you than in many corners of the world no one knows who Lincoln was. Everyone in every cave on earth at least knows of trump. Remember famous does not equal popular.

Lincoln or Washington.
Showtime92504@reddit
And FDR.
I mean if we're talking famous those are probably the only 3 known worldwide
GarutuRakthur@reddit
Trump and Obama are without a doubt more recognizable than FDR I feel.
the_urban_juror@reddit
How many leaders of the UK, Germany, Italy, and Russia can you name? Now how many of those weren't in office during WW2? That's the difference for Roosevelt.
Pisto_Atomo@reddit
I can easily tell you who the Russian president is for the last 5 terms.
asteroi@reddit
Wasn't it Putin, Medvedev, and then Putin again? Medvedev subbed in for a term. I don't think most Americans would easily get that.
Pisto_Atomo@reddit
The joke was that it was always Vlad. But yes, in 2008 or around that time, it was Medvedev, then back.
Cautious_General_177@reddit
And before that it was Gorbechov
phantom_gain@reddit
How is that the difference for Roosevelt when ww2 is exactly when Roosevelt was in office? Do you think people were not going to be able to name Churchill, hitler, mussolini and stalin?
the_urban_juror@reddit
I worded that poorly. It's the difference between Roosevelt and other Residents, not Roosevelt and other WW2 leaders. If Europe's and Asia's knowledge of US Presidents is similar to US knowledge of their leaders, then FDR is likely a me of the most famous Presidents internationally.
GarutuRakthur@reddit
I'd argue that US leaders are distinctly different from European leaders. Most people only know of the WWII European leaders because they were immortalized by the popular history of WWII.
In contrast, America isn't like that because the rest of the world hears about our politics regardless. I don't have daily articles about Olaf Scholz but I guarantee you the average German has articles about Trump.
MPLS_Poppy@reddit
At the current moment, yes. Historically, no.
According-Fold-5493@reddit
I'd have to argue that JFK would be up there as well. I have no idea if people worldwide would definitely recognize Washington, but I'd be willing to bet they'd recognize Kennedy, mostly due to recency bias.
Effective_Move_693@reddit
I guarantee that anyone that knows those three knows Trump too
Showtime92504@reddit
Theres a huge difference between being in history books, portrayed in movies, plays, and documentaries, seen all over the world for 80-250 years; and Trump. As far as "famous" goes.
PickleProvider@reddit
FDR is well known, but not as well known as Lincoln or Washington. By a long shot I'd imagine.
Showtime92504@reddit
Somebody needs to poll the non-Americans i guess.
My thought was, outside the US, it would be more likely for people to know the US President during WWII, that probably is a thing in their country. Rather than Washington or Lincoln, since the War of Independence and Civil War wouldn't be a thing in foreign countries.
PickleProvider@reddit
I get the logic, but Washington is a huge historical figure. Technically the most well known president is just whoever is current though.
nothingbuthobbies@reddit

Here in Illinois it is certainly Lincoln. I grew up thinking of him more as a local culture. The elementary school I went to was named after local poet, Carl Sandburg. A local poet writes a biography of a local politician.

Do you mean famous in the USA, or famous worldwide?
In the US, I'd say the historical top five are Lincoln, Washington, FDR, Kennedy, and Jefferson. In that order. Teddy Roosevelt is probably 6th.
Recent presidents like Trump and Obama would have to be counted on a different scale.
ATLien_3000@reddit
Washington is famous worldwide.
Second to him I'd guess (depending on your definition of "famous") would be the incumbent (at whatever point in time, whoever it is).
People around the world can name the US president pretty readily, almost always.
ShadyCrow@reddit
I mean Trump and Obama probably more famous worldwide than even Lincoln or Washington right?
Electrical_Quiet43@reddit
Yeah, it's Trump for sure. There are plenty of 18 year olds in other countries who don't know the US President from when they were 10 years old or historical presidents but know Trump because he's been all over the news for their teen years.
KevinTheCarver@reddit
Washington. Our capital city is literally named after him lol. Unless it gets changed to Trumpington in the near future.
sgtm7@reddit
That is a US-centric belief. How many foreign cities named after people, do you know what the status of that person it was named after? Do you know who Gaborone was? How about John Moresby? Who was Monrovia named after?
wittyrepartees@reddit
Ho chi min city, Rome, Stalingrad. It's gotta be a capital named after a founder or leader. Does Athens count? I guess Romulus and Athena are pretty similar in "likelihood they were real people".

Trump, Obama, Reagan, Kennedy for modern presidents. George W Bush is infamous.

Lincoln
Washington
Jefferson
In that order.
wbrigdon@reddit
I think Europeans would recognize Washington, Lincoln, JFK, FDR, Bush, Obama, Biden, and Trump easily, since they’re either globally influential, historically significant, or in recent memory. I think “Bush did 9/11” and “Thanks, Obama” might have made it across the pond, and Trump/Biden has been a near-constant deluge of bullshit for everyone
FakeAorta@reddit
Washington and Lincoln.
david_leo_k@reddit
George Washington Bridge.
WhatsTheDealWithPot@reddit
Trump is literally a breaking news in every country in the world tonight.
MyUsername2459@reddit
The current President is always known around the world.
However, on a long-term, historic scale. . .he probably won't be as famous. In 50 or 100 years we won't be talking about him the same way we talk about Washington, Lincoln, FDR, or JFK.
eugenesbluegenes@reddit
Depends whether he gets that third term he's gunning for.
MyUsername2459@reddit
Well, given that it's inherently impossible for him to legally have a 3rd term because of the 22nd Amendment (and there's NO way he's getting an Amendment legally passed in time for the 2028 election, not the least of which is there's no way he's getting a 2/3 majority in Congress for such a thing). . .that's just not happening.
A "third term" would mean an end to the United States Constitution as an actual document we follow, and he wouldn't be "President" anymore. . .he'd be something else, and the United States as we know it wouldn't exist anymore.
He wouldn't be remembered as a "President", he'd be remembered as "The dictator who destroyed the United States"
labe225@reddit
Well, if the SCOTUS goes by the 22nd as it's written, there is an argument that he can get a third term by running as VP and having the president step down. That would mean he wouldn't be violating the 22nd, thus meaning the 12th's requirements to be VP are satisfied.
It's odd that the 22nd covers a VP who ascends to presidency and then runs for office two more times (this also serving more than two terms), but didn't bother to consider the inverse (a president who runs as a VP.)
MyUsername2459@reddit
Under the 12th Amendment no person who is ineligible to be elected as President can be elected as Vice President.
They did not need to put it into the 22nd amendment because the idea had already been incorporated into the 12th.
labe225@reddit
The 22nd is specifically about people who are elected president.
A president is elected into office via Article 2 along with the vice president. Two separate roles. And, again, the 22nd only covers being elected president.
A VP is not "elected president" because they are elected vice president and their ascension to the office falls outside of an Article 2 election because succession ≠ elected.
If the 22nd was worded like the 12th such that it talked about being "ineligible to the office" instead of "no person shall be elected" then there wouldn't be a debate and reasonable people would be able to breathe a sigh of relief.
wittyrepartees@reddit
I almost reflexively down voted this
PlatypusAmbitious430@reddit
I think he will be known.
He's the most unusual president I've ever known.
Every day has been a headline. I know more members of Trump's administration than I can name in any other presidential administration combined.
.
ParkMan73@reddit
I think he'll go down in recent history as an unusual President. But in 50-100 years he'll be a pretty minor footnote - a populist President who didn't really accomplish anything of historical significance.
Given recent weeks, the only wildcard is that he's on a trajectory to erode what's left of American good will around the world. He may very well be the President who ends the US's global superpower status and returns us to the smaller stature we had prior to the first world war.

phantom_gain@reddit
Washington and Lincoln are widely known just from how much media they are in and what they are known for.

In what countries? Maybe in Europe. I don't believe either of them are known as widely as you think they are. Not worldwide.
originalbL1X@reddit

mjc500@reddit
Trump is 100% the answer. If you asked billions of people all around the world to name a US president it would be Trump and Obama would be second. I know Washington and Lincoln are extremely prominent historical figures who there are a lot of people around the world who would immediately cite Trump and then Obama.
phantom_gain@reddit
I think a lot of people would know trump and Obama from recent history but outside of the US Washington, Lincoln and Kennedy are the really famous ones that you would immediately name off. After that probably Clinton and Nixon and then maybe Reagan.
mjc500@reddit
Yes that’s probably true. You’re Irish? You probably learned a bit about US history.
I’m in USA and work with a lot of people from other countries and they would 100% know Trump and Obama before any historical presidents… a lot of people don’t learn US history and have been informed by recent historical events

Melioidozer@reddit
It depends on what you mean by famous. Famous outside of being president, or famous for being a president? If the former I’d say probably our current president. Trump had a long game streak before becoming president. If you mean the latter, it’d have to be Washington or Lincoln I would think. Both are well known presidents in and out of the US.

Washington - Put the US together
Lincoln - kept the US together
FDR - established US as a global power

wittyrepartees@reddit
And apparently he was a hottie? I don't get it, but apparently that was the consensus.

I would argue that Reagan, JFK, and possibly Thomas Jefferson are solidly in contention for #3 - of course excluding presidents that are still part of the modern political consciousness.

I think it’s Lincoln. I’ve read stories about finding people living in remote locations who have little idea what is happening around the world but somehow have heard of a Lincoln. His fame transcended typical presidential fame and turned him into a sort of legendary figure, the Great Emancipator who single-handedly freed the slaves.
There are presidents who are surprisingly well-known around the world. Woodrow Wilson is a controversial figure here, but to the rest of the world, he was a figure representing freedom and democracy during WW1 and it’s not uncommon to find statues of him.

Check back in 100 years from now. People will still know that Washington was the father of our nation, and people will vaguely remember Trump as a former President, much like how most Americans today could tell you that Warren G. Harding was a President, but not know much else about him.
A_Clever_Theme@reddit
Wasn't Harding the one that took an oath to join the triple K (idk if I'm allowed to type it) in the White House?
UnusualCookie7548@reddit
The counter point to that is that plenty of people can tell you that Hoover was President when the Great Depression started.

Tolstoy on Lincoln (via Team of Rivals):
In 1908, in a wild and remote area of the North Caucasus, Leo Tolstoy, the greatest writer of the age, was the guest of a tribal chief “living far away from civilized life in the mountains.”
Gathering his family and neighbors, the chief asked Tolstoy to tell stories about the famous men of history. Tolstoy told how he entertained the eager crowd for hours with tales of Alexander, Caesar, Frederick the Great, and Napoleon. When he was winding to a close, the chief stood and said, “But you have not told us a syllable about the greatest general and greatest ruler of the world. We want to know something about him. He was a hero. He spoke with a voice of thunder; he laughed like the sunrise and his deeds were strong as the rock….His name was Lincoln and the country in which he lived is called America, which is so far away that if a youth should journey to reach it he would be an old man when he arrived. Tell us of that man.”
“I looked at them,” Tolstoy recalled, “and saw their faces all aglow, while their eyes were burning. I saw that those rude barbarians were really interested in a man whose name and deeds had already become a legend.” He told them everything he knew about Lincoln’s “home life and youth…his habits, his influence upon the people and his physical strength.” When he finished, they were so grateful for the story that they presented him with “a wonderful Arabian horse.” The next morning, as Tolstoy prepared to leave, they asked if he could possibly acquire for them a picture of Lincoln. Thinking that he might find one at a friend’s house in the neighboring town, Tolstoy asked one of the riders to accompany him. “I was successful in getting a large photograph from my friend,” recalled Tolstoy. As he handed it to the rider, he noted that the man’s hand trembled as he took it. “He gazed for several minutes silently, like one in a reverent prayer, his eyes filled with tears.”
Tolstoy went on to observe, “This little incident proves how largely the name of Lincoln is worshipped throughout the world and how legendary his personality has become. Now, why was Lincoln so great that he overshadows all other national heroes? He really was not a great general like Napoleon or Washington; he was not such a skilful statesman as Gladstone or Frederick the Great; but his supremacy expresses itself altogether in his peculiar moral power and in the greatness of his character.
“Washington was a typical American. Napoleon was a typical Frenchman, but Lincoln was a humanitarian as broad as the world. He was bigger than his country—bigger than all the Presidents together.
“We are still too near to his greatness,” Tolstoy concluded, “but after a few centuries more our posterity will find him considerably bigger than we do. His genius is still too strong and too powerful for the common understanding, just as the sun is too hot when its light beams directly on us."

Trump. Every damn day i see pro and anti trump bs. I can't wait till the trump/Elon saga is over. Not just to be rid of them, but just to shut everyone the hell up.

James K. Polk has a pretty awesome song written about him.
SeaMollusker@reddit
Washington for sure. In a more modern context, Obama is also very well known.
UntidyVenus@reddit
Abraham Lincoln, the Vampire hunter one though
Peytonhawk@reddit
If you talk just historically and not allowing the most recent few then it’s Lincoln or Washington.
If you allow the more recent ones it’s Trump and it’s not close. He makes international news nearly daily and did in his first term as well. Without walking to a country without electricity you’d have a hard time finding people who don’t know about him.
Technical_Plum2239@reddit
Worldwide? It probably is Trump.
After this Presidential term he is on the lips of people all around the world. He said he was going to be the great uniter but I thought he meant of OUR country.
He has united much of the world against us.
SlothLover313@reddit
I agree. Trump is starting drama with most of world right now, and drifting us from our allies. I think Trump will go down in history as the president who ended American supremacy around the world
kalelopaka@reddit
Washington, Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy.
chocolatelies@reddit
Lincoln, Washington, and I think Obama is rather well known.
cheap_dates@reddit
Fun Fact: Lincoln failed at everything he ever attempted before running for office. He failed at being a logger, a grocery store owner and he was just an average country lawyer. His turning point came when he married Mary Todd, the daughter of a wealthy Kentucky slave owner. It was her social connections that make Lincoln The Great Emancipator.
Yeah, it is who ya know. ; p
Particular-Cloud6659@reddit
I read a few of his biographies. I wouldnt say he failed. And Lincoln was well known before his marriage.
cheap_dates@reddit
Same. I read one where he called in the Union troops to quell the New York City Draft Riots and that one didn't paint him in such a Golden Aura. The recent biographies do though. Historical Revision maybe?
Particular-Cloud6659@reddit
Why would he want draft riotsvto wage on? That seems weird.

All we have is the paper trail and speculation.

I mean statistically speaking, the most recent US president is gonna be the most famous. If you go to some random city in like, Uzbekistan, they're more likely to have heard of Trump or Biden than Lincoln.
clearly_not_an_alt@reddit
These days? Probably Trump. He's trying his best to make sure everyone else hates us.

Famous just means “well-known” or “widely known”. All infamous people are by definition also famous. You can’t be infamous and not be well-known.

Everyone really infamous is famous, but not everyone famous is infamous. They are not mutually exclusive.

As a Canadian, because of historical reasons I would say worldwide FDR & Kennedy are pretty famous. Not certain that you would show a painting of Washington outside the US and a lot of people would recognize him, let alone being able to name. I guess Lincoln could be recognized but absolutely with his hat. But FDR and Kennedy had so much pictures that are part of the world history that they might get recognized more. Apart of course of who we do not dare to speak his name (as a member of the rest of the planet) but after his terms I will surely be remembered intensively in the collective consciousness for a long long time.
c3534l@reddit
Ah. This is not the question you think it is. Americans, by and large, rate our own presidents as:
But most foreigners recongize only Washington and are surprised that someone other than the ultimate founder could be rated as more important, admirable, or American as the famous person who, well, most of his most famed accomplishents occurred before he was president.
So, to me, if you think Washington is the most well-reguarded American president, that tells me you're a foreigner. An actual American will almost always place Lincoln above, which most foreigners will have no basis to appreciate.
