Moved to TX in 2016 and finally decided to change my old one for a TX DL after a few year living here. It was automatic. I didn’t realize I had one until everyone started talking about it.

I moved from the Bay Area to Downtown Dallas exactly a month ago, here are some of my early impressions

Grew up in the East Bay and moved here about 8 years ago to keep my baby system company who got a job as a nurse. She passed less than a year after moving into Texas, but we stay put. The hostility you think you might get for being an outsider is mostly all in your head….to me at least . You see a lot of “dang Californians” moving here on the internet, but never experienced it. Maybe because I mostly stayed within the DFW and moved to Austin for a bit. I don’t know what part of the Bay you are from, but unless you are talking sports(Cowboys/Niners), I remembered no one really caring too much about Texas either. Food is great, but the Asian food here is t the same as Houston…I know, you can hate me, but the Bay Area has the best Asian food (I’m Polish/Filipino). I also miss the mission burritos. Get ready…better yet…hope the heat isn’t too bad this summer. So far, it has been kind of mild. We were too blessed with the year round cool breeze around the Bay. One thing I think you might start to miss is the type of nature that you can only find around mountains and ocean coastlines. The grasslands and desert area is lovely, but it’s not the same as taking a stroll next to the pacific or driving a few hours to go skiing etc. What keeps me here? The prices….more importantly the found family that allowed me to plant my roots. Welcome to Dallas. Lots of friendly people….keep in mind, Dallas is also a melting pot with people from all over. I also lived in Temple for a few months (between my time in Austin and Dallas) but even that feels like an overwhelming different experience.

Two weeks ago…got it from my SO unknowingly then spread it to my sister/bro in law, mom, and her husband while helping them move. Cole was about 3-4 days with the second and third being high fever for most of us. Sister had it worse. It took let two weeks to recover and she is pregnant. Luckily she was monitored by doctors.

Just the two of us. I'm diabetic and have been doing Keto/Intermittent fasting for the last two months. So far around 200 bucks a month. Thank goodness for HEB/Joe V for meats and the Asian Grocery stores near me for the fresh veggies.

Any luck with car insurance that isn’t absolutely ridiculous?

Posted by IndigoBlueBird@reddit | Dallas | View on Reddit | 176 comments

I drive a 2006 Scion XB. First car I bought out of college. 15 years later it is till in really good condition..under 80K miles. I am paying 102 a month and I think that is high lol! Just got quoted for 75 at Geico, so I might take that offer. Man, some people are paying half a rent's worth in car insurance and that boggles my mind. But then again, drive what you want.

Not at all. The anti-Mexican poster they had in 2019 made me think they were though. It wasn't even specifically anti-immigrant either. I look more Asian than I do Mexican/Italian, so maybe?

Raised in The Bay Area. I am Hispanic/Asian, so that may have played a part, but I have experienced more classism than anything. Growing up poor was harsh AF especially when going to school. I live in Arlington (used to live in Dallas) and everyone I have met here are really nice...however folks are more of themselves in their own homes. I live two doors down from an elderly couple who has always been nice and cordial, but the Trump flags and the anti-everything here just says otherwise. It's like they aren't aware.

That’s what I’m doing now lol! My room faces south east and gets the brunt of the sun. The rest of the apartment is like a cave. I have lots of plants, but I would rather use some plant lights for then couple of months.

I like to do garden work on my patio and kept being bitten, so I cut the legs off of an old jeans and used it like a legging. Why not wear pant? Well, then I would be wearing pants. The gym shorts are a way to go on hot days lol!

78\* with a giant fan. I work from home...usually with a nice cancelling headphone on. Its pretty okay. My living room stays cool since it is in the shaded part of the apartment.

I usually don’t care what our next door neighbors do in their own apartments, but they let their dog defecate in their patio because they are too lazy to take them for a walk outside. WE LOVE ON THE FORST FLOOR! across a grassy field, with free bags. It’s not that hard. I did it for years when my puggies were still here.

Landfill, but so is a lot of the coastal cities. I wouldn’t swim in the water, but turning the area around into a green space is pretty neat. Let nature take the land back.

Same. I felt the same hate towards Arlington as the folks that commented before me, but I've gotten used to it. 2b/2b for 1300 isn't so bad when the goal is trying to save up for a home.

I live in a 2b/2b 1000 sq foot apartment and it was around $300 for the summer. This winter has mostly been around $90-110. 14/14/14 3 year contract.

Bike crashes after speeding through traffic (Dallas Fire responds)

Posted by Naveronski@reddit | Dallas | View on Reddit | 71 comments

This drive usually takes 22 minutes but with traffic it’s up to 41 minutes. As the city grows this problem will get worse. What are solutions that Dallas should consider? Do you have examples of cities that successfully reduce traffic?

Posted by SriLanka@reddit | Dallas | View on Reddit | 301 comments

hellooomarc@reddit

Public transit. I’ve lived in a few cities with lots of traffic like Berkeley, SF and Brooklyn…trains that connect the cities and boroughs make getting around during rush hour really easy.

It's not bad. I grew up in the East Bay/Oakland, so i am comparing it to that. It is just boring. Best thing abut it is that it is in the middle in between Fort Worth and Dallas. I live in North Arlington/Viridian and it is relatively nice and peaceful here if you don't mind a quick commute.

Talk to him/her. I was your neighbor at one point. I moved in to my unit the same time as the neighbor next to me moved out. The apartment sat empty for a few months until someone else moved in. During that time I got used to playing music on high. A coupe of weeks later the. Wig or knocked in my door and ask if I can turn it down a little….I honestly didn’t know and apologized to him. Been cordial ever since.
