What do people like about Tom Thumb?

I just go for convenience because it's right next to where I live but everything is so much more expensive so I just get stuff when I'm missing one or two things.
Mediocre-Winter7100@reddit
Convenience only. Too expensive unless you check digital coupons
chickfilamoo@reddit
The weekly deals and coupons often have some great prices, but I have heard that pricing and quality varies between locations so maybe I’ve just gotten lucky with my local stores
BloodyNora78@reddit
Get your prescriptions filled there 5 times, and you get 20% off one shop. 10% off if you shop in a Cowboys shirt on a game day. This makes it only slightly expensive. It's not uncommon to see elderly people decked out in Cowboys clothing getting meds in the TT near me.
theguineapigssong@reddit
Their pharmacy is pretty good in my experience.
Distribution-Radiant@reddit
They sometimes have trouble getting a couple of my meds.
The last time, the pharmacist actually called competing stores (HEB, Walgreens, multiple locations for each) on stuff he knew was on backorder with them, then transferred everything to a competitor that had everything on hand (HEB in this case) and called me to let me know.
I'm not a fan of Walgreens, and while I like heb, I don't like their pharmacy (former HEB employee here even), but they got everything taken care of same day that time. Dude did me a solid, it's a month later and he still hasn't received those meds.
Distribution-Radiant@reddit
In Randall's in Austin (same company even before Albertsons got involved), orange shirts on UT game days get you 10% off.
I have 11 of those damn 20% off coupons to use by the end of the year. Brings them down to pretty reasonable prices. And for some reason their chicken is always super cheap, but only if you go to the meat counter.
I'm on 5 medications, plus fill my CGMs and insulin pump stuff with Randalthumbertsons. I wind up with at least one or two of those 20% coupons a month.
civil_beast@reddit
Those are actually the players from the last time the cowboys were good.
Common mistaje
MrNastyOne@reddit
Digital coupons are legit. They had Campbell’s Chunky Soups, all varieties, for $0.97 each last week. Limit 8 per visit and I stocked up.
katie4@reddit
Between sale, digital coupons, and cowboys jersey, the 1lb rolls of JennyO 90% lean ground turkey was $3.15 each. I use it in place of ground beef so I stocked up!
Last week all varieties of canned tomatoes or store brand Rotel type things were 10 for $5, then 10% off from cowboys jersey again, making them 45 cents each; stocked up then too.
omar_strollin@reddit
How about the ramen for 7c like back in the day?
bookworm0513@reddit
I saw that deal last week
KarlaSofen234@reddit
I would but the cancer bill from eating all those ramens would be astronomical
WheelNaive@reddit
Should have stocked up 4 or 5 pallets of that has you set for a couple of years. 🤣
omar_strollin@reddit
Limit 48
Mediocre-Winter7100@reddit
Yea, back in the day!
Illustrious_Can7469@reddit
Gross
yeahright17@reddit
Rich people like it because the prices generally keep the poors away. Word for word what a friends’s mom told me when I asked why she sent there.
periwinkletweet@reddit
A very frugal neighbor told me he goes there to shop with white people.
He moved, because now there are black people in the whole foods 😂
Poor baby :p
civil_beast@reddit
To be with white people? Eww..
I guess no value in kink shaming. But ….
Distribution-Radiant@reddit
I'm on multiple medications, I get at least one 20% off $25+ coupon a month.
Chicken is super cheap.
Theit pharmacy is generally quick and I'm on a first name basis with everyone at the one I go to.
That's about it.
I moved to Austin awhile back, but Randall's is identical to Tom Thumb, even the same font on the sign, same in-app coupons, etc. My coupons carry over to the Tom Thumb app, and to the Albertsons app if I'm going to an Albertsons (don't have them in Austin, but Dallas still does, same with my home town).
rudababyc@reddit
They have mice and when I told an employee I saw 3 of them she said “yeah girl, there’s mice in here. I wouldn’t buy anything that isn’t packaged.” I know there’s mice in most grocery stores but at least bullshit me and tell me you’re calling pest control.
2manyfelines@reddit
I don't get it. The produce is weeks old. It has been rousted twice for repackaging and selling expired meat, and you have to check cans to see if they are expired.
It's Safeway, however, which means it has a good pharmacy.
picantemexican@reddit (OP)
I hate Safeway with a passion
iLerntMyLesson@reddit
Their bakery had some great brownies!
ssplasma@reddit
I like their pharmacy and also their buy one get two free on some meat, usually chicken and pork. On Mondays I head to the Walmart neighborhood store where the stuff that didn’t sell over the weekend is steeply discounted. Big loaf of garlic bread for 99 cents.
Etown0401@reddit
I buy most of my stuff on sales or with their 50% off coupons
TheElPistolero@reddit
They have good "buy one get x free" deals on meat. Other than that everything is more expensive.
undeniablykostas@reddit
They're not affordable
trusttheseance@reddit
I like overpaying for expired food.
frankiea1004@reddit
I been noticing that lately their products go bad very quickly.
2manyfelines@reddit
I have seen TT re-label expired meat. And I have seen them selling soup that expired years ago.
Top_Shape264@reddit
Target with their dang yogurt
MusicalAutist@reddit
THIS. I thought it was just me constantly having to ensure my food isn't already expired (in some cases, by LITERALY A YEAR in the case of fancy crackers, which are always a problem). They don't rotate their stock properly at ALL in my location (Farmer's Branch).
racazip@reddit
Ohhhh. That's why I got chocolate milk... almost yogurt... a few weeks ago.
onepmtues@reddit
Oh my g!!! I’ve been telling myself I needed to go elsewhere because this is the one I shop at too. I’m about done with them due to the expired items and I thought it was just me!
ravenisblack@reddit
Flies and mold on produce too. Good times at the Tom Thumb.
Apprehensive_Skin150@reddit
Sadly, this! They used to be my grocery store of choice. But the decline in quality (I though selling expired food was just in my store) and expensive prices have forced me to go elsewhere.
p8nt_junkie@reddit
My wife and I use the Drive Up & Go every week; it keeps us from over-shopping, plus the store near us has lots of sus people scamming folks in front of the store. We use the app to get discounts and their gas rewards are no joke; I just filled up my tank at $0.70 off!
fbc546@reddit
Kroger has the worst customer service I’ve experienced, multiple times I’ve had issues and decided never to go back, will go out of my way to go to a Tom Thumb. I just moved though and the Tom Thumb by my new place consistently has the worst meats, I’ll go somewhere else for that.
jape2116@reddit
The truth! I’m from Ohio originally and the Krogers there were super nice or run down, but friendly. Here, I have not had a good experience in any of them. The one closest to me (Garland and Walnut) always has people inside selling other stuff. Extremely frustrating and annoying. I’m not going there to turn down sales people, I just need some freaking pizza rolls!
JLMTIK88@reddit
That Krogers has been bad since I was a kid in the 90’s. With how run down that area is now, it doesn’t surprise me to hear that it has gotten worse.
Mecha-Jesus@reddit
Yeah, “at least it isn’t Kroger” is literally the reason I occasionally shop at Tom Thumb.
Mr_ComputerScience@reddit
Damn I love Krogers lmao. What's wrong with Krogers
bellsaplenty@reddit
It’s not plural
Mr_ComputerScience@reddit
I'm aware. Krogers just what many people call it IRL and it stuck. Think of it like people saying ATM machine despite the M meaning machine.
rex_lauandi@reddit
I don’t know where you live, but in Dallas, I do not often hear people saying “Krogers.”
Mr_ComputerScience@reddit
I live in Dallas.
zekesaltspider@reddit
“Many people” is an exaggeration, I’ve never heard it called that
Mr_ComputerScience@reddit
It's not an exaggeration. People of my culture just pronounce it like that. Dialect quirks are a real thing.
https://cw39.com/news/business/why-do-people-add-s-to-the-end-of-store-names/#:~:text=Finally%2C%20Yarborough%20explains%2C%20adding%20an,before%20writing%20out%20any%20checks!
Funny enough Kroger is mentioned in this article. "You’ve heard of Kroger’s, Nordstrom’s and JCPenney’s. But did you know none of these stores actually exist? That said, Kroger, Nordstrom and JCPenney do."
So definitely enough people say it for an article to be written about it.
Mr_ComputerScience@reddit
Not an exaggeration. People of my culture just say it like that. Dialect quirks are real thing.
omar_strollin@reddit
You’re about to feel the wrath of the Midwest, buddy
Illustrious_Can7469@reddit
There is only one Illinois not two. FIBs.
SexyOctagon@reddit
You’re not plural.
rmg418@reddit
Yeah same I go to Kroger for my regular grocery shopping and only go to Tom Thumb if I need something specific.
ranrotx@reddit
And Kroger is trying to buy Tom Thumb (and Albertsons), so you can expect the customer service to drop to Kroger levels with that acquisition.
rare_with_hair@reddit
Albertsons bought Tom Thumb in 2015. So they are a part of the Albertsons-Kroger merger that was already approved in 2022.
Illustrious_Can7469@reddit
HEB has entered the chat
earthworm_fan@reddit
They would also acquire Market Street no? Which prides itself on a high level of customer service
Honest_Potential8710@reddit
Yes I agree. Sometimes I can’t even find someone to ask for help.
JMer806@reddit
Not that I’m a big fan of Kroger but what customer service interactions did you have that were bad? I only ask because I could never have a bad customer service interaction as I do not interact with the store staff 😂
Ag7212@reddit
I’ve definitely noticed that meat and produce quality at Tom Thumb varies a lot based on location relative to nice neighborhoods. Started getting meat at Trader Joe’s cause it’s cheaper and better quality
fbc546@reddit
Yeah I used to get really good meat at the downtown location. The first time I bought meat at this new Thumb I didn’t realize till I got home but the steak was grey on the back side and smelled rotten. Luckily they gave me my money back but every time I go I see the same grey or dark red steaks.
Herry_Up@reddit
Is it the oak cliff location lol
fbc546@reddit
No im in north Dallas now
Cryptex410@reddit
the amount of times I've bought already rotten meat from them without knowing is absurd
fbc546@reddit
Same, they will take it back but I just don’t buy meat there anymore. Idk how they can put that out on the shelf knowing it’s bad.
MrVladmirPoopin@reddit
Kroger can be ghetto af too
MusicalAutist@reddit
The Kroger in Addison is so trash you literally get panhandled in the asiles at night. It's so freaking bad.
bomdia10@reddit
In general they’re overpriced, but sometimes they’ll mistag or have crazy sales on meat
milkbather@reddit
Its one of the few grocery stores I can bicycle to from home and not get killed on the way.
Detox64@reddit
Nothing. Haven't shopped there in years. Target prices with walmart products.
superschepps@reddit
I have lots of Jewish family. The kosher tom thumb is basically the only place they'll shop
SoberDWTX@reddit
The Tom Thumb on Field st. in downtown has the lowest prices I’ve seen in 4 years of living here. I think they’ve been dropping prices because of the construction on the project and people not buying as much food as they used to. Greedflation and Ozempic have been curbing appetites for over a year now.
MeN3D@reddit
Convenience, as well. I think they purposely plant themselves in front of neighborhoods
kakacon@reddit
nothing, bad quality, high costs, only reason it’s still alive is because of convoy
legendofdoggo@reddit
Car registration
picantemexican@reddit (OP)
Which one has that?
SaintSuey@reddit
They have inexpensive proteins because it’s always on a deal or has a coupon. Produce tends to be of a better quality.
Weekly_Yesterday_403@reddit
Same exactly. There’s one down the street so if we need 3 things or less we will go there lol
Swdannycactus@reddit
nothing, this lace purposefully sits in areas where not many others stores are and then they tax you for everything. fuck this store
acorneyes@reddit
it’s between tom thumbs and whole foods for my grocery options, and whole foods has a pathetic cat section. also tom thumbs has these japanese potato snacks that are delicious
SPARTAN-Jai-006@reddit
They have killer deals on steak sometimes
Thwipped@reddit
It’s right down the street. Convenience is king in my life right now.
cowboysmavs@reddit
We don’t. It’s a local brand that sells nothing local or Texan, way overpriced, terrible outdated stores and always old expired food (check the dates on every item).
aeroluv327@reddit
Excellent customer service and they treat their employees well. Their pharmacy staff is super helpful, I once had the pharmacist go completely out of her way to make sure I got a discounted price on my medication while I was on COBRA. She even applied the discount to past purchases because I hadn't realized that I qualified for the discount.
Their produce is great and everything I've tried of their store brand is as good as the name brand product (sometimes better). In general their prices are higher, but I don't think they are crazy high, especially if you use your reward card/digital coupons.
I used to live by the Preston Forest store and would go there every week for groceries, I honestly miss it! The same people worked there for years, sometimes decades.
UnholyTrashPanda@reddit
It’s so expensive, but the atmosphere is calmer and less crowded than Walmart. So sometimes I go just for a relaxing trip if things are already stressful.
sWtPotater@reddit
this 100%
TeeBrownie@reddit
The quality of the fresh produce at Tom Thumb is better than Walmart.
I usually see sticky fruit that has lost its luster and flies all over the produce at Walmart.
HeyYouHeyMe@reddit
Agreed! They also have carts that look like cars and have steering wheels that are fun for kids. And a Starbucks that is nice if you want a coffee before/after your shopping trip.
I usually just go to get whatever my Walmart online order was out of stock on, but it’s always a pleasant experience at the one near me.
hellooomarc@reddit
Meat sales and the bakery. Other than those two it is too expensive even with membership or coupons.
NomenScribe@reddit
Only Select grade steaks ever go on sale at my Tom Thumb. Kroger will have Choice for the same price.
oakcliffian@reddit
I'm a Kroger man
Illustrious_Can7469@reddit
Tom
PuddingCandid@reddit
Everything. I ask the same thing about Kroger.
isthis1taken78@reddit
I get my beef that I use for my beef jerkey there. It’s 2 for 1 and perfect for what I need.
EmbarrassedTrouble10@reddit
Lol y'all really responding to and upvoting a troll
earthworm_fan@reddit
Kroger, HEB, Central Market, Market Street, Winco, Target, possibly Walmart are all better.
It's really just a more expensive Kroger
KarlaSofen234@reddit
the butcher at the Harwood Tom Thumb are the best with best cut of meats on the offerings. I like that they honor coupon on top of discounted price. They make an effort to look nice unlike Kroger
_loathed@reddit
What kind of customer service is everyone needing at the grocery store? I think you all might be doing it wrong. I haven’t even spoken to another human at the grocery store in years.
nickgomez@reddit
😂
civil_beast@reddit
I prefer Wells Fargo over Bank of America. Which do yall prefer and why?
drexlortheterrrible@reddit
This was the wildest thing when Ioved here. Up north tom thumb is a real shitty gas station chain. Down here it is an over priced "high end" grocery store.
diazmark0899@reddit
When I moved to Dallas and saw people shopped at Tom Thumb I was so tripped out. In my home town Tom Thumb is ONLY a dingy gas station chain that you avoid
the__poseidon@reddit
Quick and easy
zaptorque@reddit
Their deli fried chicken is goated. Other than that they wack
hellooomarc@reddit
Depends on location...I dunno why, but the one close to me uses 80 percent salt in their batter. I often have to pick it off.
PuzzleheadedWar2940@reddit
Why even buy it at that point?
hellooomarc@reddit
I’m a glutton for punishment
RKO_YourAssFam@reddit
They bread it twice. Once before being prepped, then again before frying. It’s tasted the same for me at every location. I thought it was consistent everywhere
msondo@reddit
The one in Las Colinas is nice. Really good bakery, decent deli with a nice cheese selection, ample wine options including Chateauneuf de Pape and more Texan wines (better than the local Whole Foods in that regard), a convenient pharmacy, 10% discounts on Cowboys game days if you wear Cowboys gear, and there is even a guy that plays piano while you shop sometimes.
Niblonian31@reddit
I can get to one within 2 minutes of waking out of my front door, most of everything I get is the same price as the closest Kroger (plus I get coupons/offers) and I get $0.05 off on gas instead of $0.03 but this is all convenience. If I'm actually going grocery shopping, I just go to Walmart or Sam's club
pasak1987@reddit
Frozenpizza
Own-Reception-2396@reddit
Better than Kroger
No_Pie4638@reddit
According to my wife, their desserts are great.
Dommo1717@reddit
The one in Lewisville when I lived there would occasionally have (seemingly) random “buy 1 get 3 free” deals with fresh meat. Buy one steak get three more. We can debate the quality of the meat, but that was about the only reason (aside from it being the closest grocery store to our house) we would go there.
space_monkey420@reddit
Their mango habanero roast chicken and cookies are pretty good.
Emergency-Adagio2327@reddit
Free grocery pickup. I shop online so I'm able to take advantage of that week's deals and coupons and I love being able to drive up and have someone bring my groceries out to me. Maybe it's lazy, but it makes doing a quick grocery run during the work day really easy.
terivia@reddit
I like their poorly veiled attempts at guerilla marketing on Reddit.
JBWentworth_@reddit
Obvious AI post is very obvious.
kingarthur595@reddit
Produce section and meat suuuuuuuck
davis214512@reddit
Nothing. It is just closer than Central Market or HEB.
SFPsycho@reddit
Literally only go because it's next to my job so I grab little things we forgot for dinner. Main grocery shopping anywhere else, Tom Thumb prices are ASS
ravenisblack@reddit
In Dallas, their produce is almost always on the brink of going bad, if not already bad. So I suspect its just the old folk and people who don't cook meals from scratch much?
Sad_Pension496@reddit
Bc It’s similar to Safeway; or is it the other way around 🤔
playballer@reddit
Them: Price $8 each, buy 3 for $7.79. It’s an awesome deal!
Me: it’s a 2 liter of coke, should be like one fiddy
Them: oh well see, it’s $24 except we give it for less than$8
Me: nobody is paying $24 for that
Them: but , rewards and….
Me: so I gotta buy 3 of these things
Them: yeah kinda , it’s a good deal though!! Look how expensive it is without rewards
Me: it’s still almost twice what I’d pay somewhere else
Them: oh, we don’t talk about it like that in here. Tom gets angry
harionfire@reddit
It truly is the Kohl's of grocery stores.
MusicalAutist@reddit
Mr. Thumb is just compensating for this short stature. It's all a cry for help.
ILikeToParty86@reddit
Tom Thumb used to be great. But its owned by Safeway. So its just corporate greed. I still shop there but i know what to buy and what not to buy. And i dont buy much
Content-Mortgage-345@reddit
It’s not your parents Tom Thumb..local family sold to Randalls then to Safeway then to Albertsons and now in limbo with sale to Kroger…. Seems like a lot of investment has been deferred..the merger putting g everything in limbo. Prices can be higher than Central Market…shelves not stocked..employee turnover..employees going through the motion. Not the Tom Thumb of 10 years ago!!! Weekly ad deals can be bargain but that’s about it. I have ended up buying more at Costco and Central Market and just buy weekly ad sale items! So sad…
Low-Weight-6809@reddit
they’re the only grocery that carries beef bacon. i can’t find anything but pork and turkey bacon everywhere else.
DadDong69@reddit
You need to go to some non white grocery stores. Look for halal meats and you’ll find tons of beef bacon.
Longhorn24@reddit
Central market has it
Low-Weight-6809@reddit
a little further out but i’ll check it out. gotta be better priced than $10 for 1 damn pack of bacon at TT.
Longhorn24@reddit
I mean they have Peter Lugers bacon that’s like 10$ for 6 thick pieces of bacon.
whaddahellisthis@reddit
It’s probably the worst grocery store near my house. Yes Kroger is more of a hassle but it’s less grating than getting jobbed out of money.
HEB went in nearby and you won’t catch me in a Tom Thumb to save my life now.
toodleroo@reddit
Cleanliness, wide selection of products.
oilmoney322@reddit
We don’t. Most people go to the nearest grocery store. Downtown Dallas is a food desert that only consist of high end grocery stores and the Tom Thumb is victory park has a location that cannot fail. The nearest Walmart is off 75 and hall from downtown.
Josher747@reddit
I think people on this sub are confused as to what a food desert is. Two Tom Thumbs doesn’t constitute a food desert.
Longhorn24@reddit
Oak cliff is a food desert.
YaGetSkeeted0n@reddit
Far southeast Dallas, like the Kleberg area, now that’s a food desert. Once in a while I see a house for sale there that looks pretty decent and well priced, then I remember how far it is from an actual grocery store.
Longhorn24@reddit
That’s a flood zone and it’s pretty close to seagoville and several grocery stores and a dollar general in Kleberg not a full grocery store but has some grocery options.
Soundwave234@reddit
I swear i live in and around a different dallas than a lot of people in the sub. I must be blessed or something i guess.

With weekly ads and digital deals on meat, depending on the week it can be the best value for meats. I don’t buy anything else there, salad is $5 for 11oz while Walmart and HEB sell 16oz for the same price. What a scam
Perfect_Evidence@reddit
discount on gas, pumped regular at 1.77 a few days ago.
katie4@reddit
According to my Tom Thumb app, over lifetime (8 years) I have saved $1,933.04 from clipped coupons and rewards. I also wear my Cowboys jersey for 10% off on game days. And when my husband and I each get our flu and Covid shots, we get 4 10% off coupons to use in the football offseason.
Mine used to be an Albertsons. I’m not sure if the price increases I’ve seen are due to the store rebrand to TT or just general grocery inflation like everywhere.
pbugg2@reddit

The two near me (Ross in old east dallas and the one near victory park) are great. I used the digital coupons which save me a ton so the inflated prices aren’t so bad, I know which day to get $7/lb turkey meat, it’s super convenient, well lit, clean.
I hate Kroger and it’s cheaper than Whole Foods for sure
thedoofimbibes@reddit
At some point their prices became insane. I miss shopping there though. They were always nicer and cleaner inside than the competitors.
UDMN@reddit
I do Cox and Central Market
LazyMirror7617@reddit
I only go if I didn't plan my life well. Everything is like $1-2 more than it should be, which adds up if buying a lot. But, almost all the other stores by me are just as bad for poor quality food. Enshitification of grocery.
I try to go out of the way for Trader Joes or HEB, but its not always convenient.

jnmann@reddit
The only thing I like about Tom Thumb is it seems to always be empty and there’s one very close to my house. If I need to grab something quick for dinner it’s a quick in and out experience.
Other than that, HEB is where I prefer to go
Dragooncancer@reddit
They used to have really good tortilla chips that were made in store(or at least I think they were). That, plus their in store queso, the best!
However, they changed their tortilla chips about a year or so ago and now like you OP I only go out of convenience for one or two things since they’re so close to me.
Jurbl@reddit
When the hideous Kroger near me doesn’t have something, not unusual, and not the type of item Sprouts carries.
BlackStarCorona@reddit
I used to go because they were the only store with a few specific products I wanted.
ViscountDeVesci@reddit
It’s the same as Albertsons. They’re fine and I like the store brands quite a bit. I go mostly because it’s not Kroger (stopped shopping there in 1996) or Amazon. Better quality than Wally World too.
gatorintexas@reddit
Worst grocery store around. Worse than Albertsons.
Luka_Dunks_on_Bums@reddit
It’s close, I get reward points when I shop there…..that’s really it
SichIrren@reddit
Location. Sometimes their "digital deals" are just okay... sort of. The rest of their prices are worse than convenience stores.
naked_avenger@reddit
I liked the one off of field. Just a nice experience.
November77@reddit
The radiation from the florescent lighting installed in the 70s.
CoconutMacaron@reddit
It is shocking how much more expensive TT is than HEB. I still occasionally run into TT when I need a few things because it is close. But I’m happy to drive 15 minutes for curbside HEB for the bulk of my items.
HEB proves that groceries can still be more affordable than the other stores would have you believe.
Soundwave234@reddit
I used to shop there some years ago, there was a nice one close to me. The prices were too bad if you had the membership card but I'm sure that's changed.
AnswerMaximum@reddit
It’s super close & I love the employees. They hire disabled folks too so I’m happy to support that. Pharmacy is way less expensive too. I use the app for discounts, watch for deals & don’t go when I’m hungry.
lurko_e_basta@reddit
Got good deals on some of their items/good coupons (e.g., chicken).
carenard@reddit
convenience/sales/coupons... usually clean and friendly staff.
I will only buy things not on sale if I only need a couple things... time is money after all.
DrFatz@reddit
I find their customer service is better than Kroger. Despite the more expensive prices I don't feel like I'm in a self fulfilling prophecy of frustration when I shop at Tom Thumb. With Kroger, it's always something. From big to small issues I rarely have that happen at Tom Thumb.
Although this wouldn't be a problem if HEB would hurry up and expand in it's takeover. The one I visited in Dallas felt like going to another country.
TheRealBadGate@reddit

It’s closest to me, so I’d say convenience. It’s also less crowded than other stores, I assume this is because of the higher prices.
