This drive usually takes 22 minutes but with traffic it’s up to 41 minutes. As the city grows this problem will get worse. What are solutions that Dallas should consider? Do you have examples of cities that successfully reduce traffic?

More hov lanes at the expense of more free to drive lanes is not the answer. In my observation this definately does not improve traffic but makes it work (except for people with money to burn on excessive tolls)

Every Michigander that moved to Dallas knows there’s not actually a real traffic problem here. People in dfw love to throw hissy fits but they don’t understand the snow covered gridlock that we grew up in. It’s better in dfw. We get to live in a society here. Unfortunately the wider DFW area is already an example of relatively well handled traffic. It’s relatively efficient considering the massive area and population compared to Houston, LA, Honolulu, etc. East-West in that band is a pain - the Sam Rayburn Tollway further north is godsend when further out.
View on Reddit #12210856

I-No-Reed-Good@reddit

These people have never driven in the boroughs of NYC. Dallas does an great job with traffic compared to many of the larger cities. Between belt loops, many intersections, 4 major interstates (one with E and W), a lot of local remote work opportunity, etc. If we go through a country wide economic downturn (we will, we just don’t know when), DFW will boom even more. At the end of the day, if you have a college education and live somewhere on either coast, Dallas has to be on the radar for affordability and access to a lot of what reminds you of home (wherever that may be) You can get very gainful employment and live from weatherford to Denton to Anna to Forney to waxahachie to cleburne and be within distance of a lot of great opportunities. We take it for granted, but DFW is positioned very well for economic busts. Even more so now than 2008. I don’t expect growth to slow down, and there’s a reason there is so many corporate entities purchasing property well outside of what is currently considered DFW. Weatherford will be absorbed eventually, Kaufman county will go from rural to what forney is. Kaufman county even has a 1 acre mandate on properties to try and combat it a bit, but it will just allow for that region to be PRICEY down the road. Hell, Celina has had a population boom. Won’t be long for them either. Investment companies have scooped up land all the way out in Van Zandt county along 20 for a reason. They are heavily investing in fiber optic infrastructure in Kaufman county. They ain’t doing it for the old hands there now. People can complain all they want, and I get it in regards to sprawl. Look hard enough and you can find pretty much anything you are looking for. If you are willing to drive an hour, there ain’t much you can’t find. There’s a reason why estimates are that DFW will be the most populated city in America. Room to run for a LONG way still. Most cities need to build upwards, DFW just goes further out.

Tried this last week. It turned an already long day into an even longer one that was frankly a bit agonizing. Sure. It’s cheap. But I feel like the 45 dollars on an Uber would have been a better use of my time
View on Reddit #12217266

Dry_Clothes_6456@reddit

Agreed, comparing Dallas to Chicago, Austin, and Atlanta (forget NYC and all of Cali), Dallas beats out Austin only because the Dart rails are effective until you start trying out past Plano. Chicago has a massive rail system and it seems to match the traffic time. 15 miles from downtown to O’Hare can equal 1.2 hours via train or Uber. Atlanta’s MARTA is a joke and so unsafe, but you can step right off the plane to the train… it matches traffic as well. I’ve stopped using rental cars and have gone to the train in places but not Dallas. DART is nowhere near as fast as the NYC subway or California’s BART. What do you all think?
View on Reddit #12230196

MARTA is actually awesome if you’re on one of the four lines. Midtown to the airport is super convenient.
View on Reddit #12286166

The blue line in Chicago gets you from O'Hare to Clark/Lake downtown in about 45mins. Trains leave every 10mins or so during normal hours. If you drive, it takes 25mins at 5am (assuming you have a 7am flight) or up to 1.5hr if there is traffic.

Unless you pay up for terminal parking make sure you add the increased time of unpacking your car, schlepping to the shuttle, waiting for the shuttle, loading again, riding the shuttle, stopping at not your terminal 3 times while everyone else unloads and reloads, then unload and schlep inside. I bet that adds a solid 25-30 minutes to the trip on an easy day. Orange line is across the street from Terminal A.
View on Reddit #12211483

notstylishyet@reddit

You will still have to get on a shuttle to make your way to your terminal once you arrive via DART. I can tell you from experience that parking does not take long. Both options force you take another mode of travel to get to your terminal. Uncovered parking is like $5 a day. Garage parking in front of the terminal is like $15. Or the fastest and most convenient option seems to be an Uber.
View on Reddit #12212178

Flyboy2057@reddit

Your numbers very out of date. Uncovered is $15 and garage is $27. Also you can just go in terminal A where the DART station is, check in there if you’re on American, and then take the skyline to your terminal once you’re through security.

View on Reddit #12225082

As long as you book two weeks in advance or more, prepaying online usually gets you terminal parking for the same cost as just driving up to express north / south without a reservation.

The express parking shuttle has never taken more than about 15 minutes for me from parking my car to stepping off the bus. And the individual buses are all dedicated to a single terminal. You don’t have to go through A-B-C if you’re going to D for example.
View on Reddit #12221913

And thus an example of Downs–Thomson paradox, where the equilibrium of vehicular speed continually approaches transit speed. In other words: average door to door times of vehicles tend to slow down over time until they reach public transit average door to door times. Or another way: whatever the average door to door time of public transit is, vehicular traffic tends to stay under it. So if you want to reliably drive Mockingbird to DFW in 20 minutes, build a transit system capable of doing similar trips in 25 minutes.

More investment in mass transit. Like, a lot more. My last job, I could've taken the train, but that would've involved about an hour and a half of travel each way, going from Farmers Branch to downtown, then switching trains to go up to Richardson. Meanwhile just driving was about 20 minutes each way. A crosstown train, rather than an around town one, would've solved the issue.

That's easy to say for people who don't live in the path of these proposed rail lines. If you've been in Dallas long enough, you know they've already had these arguments and lost them because you're going to be cutting across a lot of expensive real estate to get to the airport, so it is too late. Best they could do is try to run some sort of elevated train over the highway.

The DC metro area transit system works so well because of the population density plus all the major players deciding to spend the billions of dollars it took to build it out. Key, however, is the population density and the ability to group large densities of people near large office-based employers. That being said, one downside of that area is that if you don't have a million bucks cash to put down on a mortgage you're never getting a home there. A lot of people who work in the DC area have to live fairly far away and rely on the few commuter trains that run through there to get to work. It does work, but plan on spending a few hours a day commuting until you can scrape up enough money to buy a home closer in, and you'll spend your career saving and upgrading until you're living in town. That model doesn't work in areas that can spread out into suburbs because the cost per head to put in transit is prohibitive.

Congestion taxes have been fairly successful outside of the US. A big reason for traffic is that it feels free to use roads, expanding roads have been found to have little effect. Gas taxes have not changed as fuel consumption has been greatly reduced in cars and it’s more of an “inherent” charge, since the consumer does not actually see the price. Taking away the gas tax, and instead putting a big sign with what it will cost to use that road at a given time is a good deterrent to not use the roads if you don’t need to, while also saving the consumer money long term since it helps with gas prices. London and Singapore are great examples of citys/country’s that successfully deployed this strategy Public transit will not help in a sprawled city like Dallas, you would need rail lines going in all sorts of directions. It might help if you are going from one very specific area to another, but you will likely need to drive to the rail station which doesn’t actually solve traffic since you are still contributing to traffic by driving to the transit station.

Be the solution you want to see, and move. Sorry, *but you live in the heart of a big city, and you're trying to get to the other side of the metropolitan area.* The entirety of your existence is probably within a 15 minute city neighbor. You save plenty of time in your daily life, and so you have to *rarely* sacrifice in other places. If you're making this trip so often that it's truly a major inconvenience to you, then move to Las Colinas, or HEB. In those places, you can suffer minor daily inconveniences instead. Or, you know, fly when there's no traffic on the highways.
View on Reddit #12215513

iwentdwarfing@reddit

This is the real answer. Traffic isn't the result of increased population but rather increased population multiplied by the distance they want to travel. On top of that, OP is complaining about traffic he/she is helping to create because he/she wants to travel a far distance. The individual solution is to live near the places you want to be. The societal solution is to allow gradual densification without a slew of lawsuits and paperwork (otherwise known as "by right") so as to create more places for people to live in the same areas where they want to visit.

Using current technology, there is really only way to successfully reduce traffic without reducing population: That method is to systematically implement mass transit using rail lines in such a way that it would be safe, easily accessible, and affordable for all. We start here in DFW, and once it proves itself, we start implementing it in all major cities, and start constructing high-speed rail between those cities. Unfortunately, we know that the oil and automotive industries will fight tooth and nail at the local, state, and federal levels to prevent this.

That's an extra car off the road, and if others are in the same position as me and do something similar then that's more cars off the road

GoStars817@reddit

The answer is limit population. That’s it. Nothing more would work. Public transportation is necessary to help those that cannot afford to drive, can’t drive, or just prefer not to, but it does nothing to actually alleviate traffic. The more populations grow, the worse it’s always going to get.
View on Reddit #12208398

IcedCowboyCoffee@reddit

What alleviates traffic is creating alternatives better than driving people actually want to use. Tokyo metro population is 40 million people compared to our meager 8 million. The distance from Ueno station to Narita International airport is 35 miles--an exactly 41 minute train ride or a 55 minute drive. If they can handle it with 40 million people I don't see why our relatively tiny 8 million has be such an eternal impediment. If I could ditch my car I would do it in a heartbeat and that would be one less car everyone else would have to complain about. The city just has to make it a viable option.
View on Reddit #12211244

RearAdmiralP@reddit

> What alleviates traffic is creating alternatives better than driving people actually want to use. I don't buy this argument. I work in Budapest. Budapest consistently ranks at the top of EU cities in terms of public transit usage, and it's among the lowest in terms of private car ownership. Traffic still fucking sucks. The distance from Freedom Square to Liszt Ferenc airport is about 11 miles as the crow flies or 13 miles by car. With typical daytime traffic, it's a 45 minute to 1 hour drive, or it's about an hour by public transit ([google maps screenshot](https://backdatassup.com/img/4mqgo81qsix6iwatppelzk4nk4nv3d9.png)). In the same time that it takes OP to 27 miles in Dallas, I can only cover half the distance. I have a lot of experience driving in both cities, and, subjectively, from a "how pleasant is it to get around by car here?" perspective, Dallas blows Budapest (and lots other cities) out of the fucking water. So, I don't buy the argument that lots of people choosing to be "one fewer car on the road" makes traffic better. I frequently drive in a places where that's the case, and it seems to me that actually the opposite is the case-- more cars on the road means more car friendly city planning, which means better traffic conditions.
View on Reddit #12228928

Tokyo population density is 16,000/square mile, Dallas is 3,400/square mile. The most densely populated area in Dallas is Vickery Meadows, it tops out at 10,000/square mile. It's easy to build transit if you have 3-5 times more density and thus ridership potential.

The only way to get rid of traffic is to reduce the number of cars on the road. Unfortunately, that means convincing the poster child “one more lane” state to invest billions over 10-20 years in developing a lot more above grade rail.

So you are driving almost 30 miles during rush hour on a Friday night down perhaps the worst highway in the metroplex, and you are bitching about it taking 40 minutes? Lol welcome to adult life

This is not extreme and it’s pretty well documented that Dallas has some of the best traffic for a top 10 metro

Dedicated bus lanes. It’s probably the easiest thing the city can do with all the over abundance of 6 lane roads

honestly, compared to some of the other major cities i've lived in/near, Dallas really isn't that bad but to answer your question, some kind of rail system that spans the greater dfw area

Just one more lane, bro. Please. Just build one more. That will fix it. More lanes always works.

Shoulders on the highway. We don’t have shoulders, so there’s no escape path to avoid accidents. Then, when an accident inevitably occurs, they can’t move the vehicles out of the travel lanes. When the emergency vehicles try to get to the accident, they’re stuck in the backed up traffic and have to block more travel lanes to safely deal with the accident. Our lanes are too narrow, and don’t meet DOT regulations. I suspect that this is why everything is always “under construction”. The narrow lanes not only cause accidents, they make timid drivers drive too slowly and unpredictably, and often make it difficult to pass slow moving large trucks. Wider lanes, wide shoulders, and enforcement of left lane laws would improve traffic flow in the Metroplex. Addressing the notably poor skill level of Texas drivers would be a massive improvement too, even though that’s just a dream. When I moved to Dallas 20 years ago, I was shocked at the awful infrastructure and poor drivers. It’s gotten substantially worse, with the exception of the toll roads that were built with our tax dollars and are owned by a foreign company. The toll roads are what the public highways should be.

I say we keep tearing down homes and businesses to make room for more freeways and wider lanes. The new pavement will help optimize automotive traffic flow, while the lost homes and businesses will remove the reasons people need to travel in the first place. There. Traffic is solved. You're welcome.

Public transportation. Since we’re talking about things that will never happen, people could also lead how to stop sitting with their dicks in their hands and get the fuck out of the left lane when they’re not passing. That’d help traffic and accidents a tick.

‼️How fast do you drive ‼️⁉️ 27 miles, what is an acceptable time? Even at 60mph, it Would still take 30mins!

Only way to reduced traffic in a major city is more people work from home and mass public transit that is safe reliable and cheap. Only way in my opinion.

Public transit. I’ve lived in a few cities with lots of traffic like Berkeley, SF and Brooklyn…trains that connect the cities and boroughs make getting around during rush hour really easy.

Don’t worry they’ll start construction for an extra lane or 2 soon. Traffic will be terrible and then when it opens, you’ll still have a 40 minute commute. Better public transit is the way!

That’s what happens when a city grows too big but has 3 freeways merged into 1. Plus you have the place where Cali meets Oklahoma meets Texas drivers, it’s like avengers endgame but missing Florida.

We need more and faster transit connections- it’s great that we have the Orange Line and soon(tm) the Silver Line but the reality is that if you’re starting from anywhere north of downtown it’s a frustratingly long journey due to all the stops. Silver Line will help, but only really cut down the journey time for people north of 635. Realistically, the only thing that reduces highway traffic is giving people viable alternatives, and right now we don’t have those.

Imagine if Dart had double the trains, and some of them were express trains that only stopped at like 3 stops total. They'd bypass the other trains and stops and get to dfw in about 45 minutes. We really should've gotten that underground line under mockingbird across the park cities to Love field, that shortcut would make the network so much more usable.

You know that your start and end points are both along the DART Orange rail line, yes? The City of Dallas does have a plan in place to hold that trip to no more than an hour.

Yep, several EU (and a few US) cities have actually well thought out public transportation. That’s the solution. But, until it stops taking us all 90 minutes to go approximately 15 miles on DART, this is our lives.
