The end of AVGAS 100/130

It is straightforward to solve for octane rating or any of the other requirements- vapor pressure, freezing point, water absorption, chemical stability, solubility parameters (relative to paint or rubber solvation), miscibility with other fuels, corrosion prevention (or lack of corrosion promotion)- it becomes difficult to solve for all of them for a fleet of aircraft built over the last 100 years. Valve seat erosion is a red herring. The engine killer with reduced octane is knock/detonation or pre-ignition. The G100UL I mentioned above actually performs at up to 130 octane, but so far it’s not available at any airports I frequent.

Aviation is a challenging environment for those workarounds- they can handle limited amounts of moisture contamination but the ability of ethanol to absorb water is a fundamental characteristic that cannot be changed . Aviation fuel is expected to be stable for months or even years of storage, in addition to handling extremes of hot/cold/low pressure-high altitude operations. I would love to see a solution for 100LL. I was one of the few who bought the G100UL STC but have never been able to use that fuel due to early paint compatibility issues and lack of general availability. But ethanol will never be part of the solution for aviation fuel.

The background should be black. The display (or possibly a display driver) is failing. Manifold pressure is always at ambient when the engine is not running.

I owned a 112A for a decade or so. That is the least slippery airplane in the world. Flaps and gear down, prop forward with full flaps it can descend at 2000+ fpm without exceeding 100kts. The gear extension speed is higher than cruise, and the first 10 degrees of flaps are available from cruise as well. All of which is to say that many other refracts are more slippery and need more planning ahead of time to slow down, as they won’t have all those aerodynamic tools available at cruise.

WW2 piston aircraft exhaust smell

Some combination of tetra ethyl lead and the scavenger package added to minimize lead deposits. I can alway tell when some dipshit at the airport has the bright idea to use 100LL in the car/bike, the smell is distinctive. Huge EPA fine liability if caught.

It happens- either the drain sticks or it’s the latching type and you accidentally lock it open, as in this case. Either way, keep the peepers on the drain after you remove the gats jar to ensure it seals up correctly

You realize that YouTube is not a great source for POH or MM type info? If the throttle happens to be at or close to full power when the cable breaks, it’s going to remain set there. Or it may drift around if the throttle shaft is worn.

The comment I was replying to in the first place stated- without qualification- that aircraft engines default to 100% power when the control breaks. That is certainly 100% incorrect for the Pipers and Cessnas that make up the vast majority of the GA fleet. Good day to you sir.

Posted by HJ80TR@reddit | flying | View on Reddit | 58 comments

gregariouspilot@reddit

Thanks for that. My experience is mostly mainstream certified GA with Lyc or Cont engines…. It’s certainly mechanically possible to spring load the throttle to bias opening with a failed control…but don’t expect that behavior from most of the aircraft you encounter.

gregariouspilot@reddit

Sorry brother, this is 100% incorrect. Take yourself to the shop the next time your aircraft is in for 100hr/annual and manipulate the fuel servo/ carb throttle shaft with the throttle cable disconnected. You’ll see that there is no spring bias in either the open or close direction. When the throttle cable breaks, the power setting will remain exactly where it was set before the break.

Switch from Cessna to piper

I fly both Cessnas and Pipers often. Apart from the very obvious differences, in my opinion Pipers have better control harmony- meaning there is less deliberate effort required to coordinate the airplane. This is good and bad- easier to fly, but less obvious where a student is lacking in those specific skills.

I’m not going to say it’s inexpensive to live here, but your numbers are way off. Plenty of 1200-1500 sq ft homes around the bay within easy commute distance of SQL around $.9-1.3MM. Apartments about half of your number unless you’re talking doorman premium buildings.

Liberty University as a non-religious person. Is it worth it?

I would never make an employment decision based on a candidate’s religion, and likewise I expect that candidates have the common sense to leave potentially biasing information off their resumes. Such content is taboo even for discussion during interviews, as is appropriate. I did once have the pleasure of questioning a candidate with a typo riddled resume about their participation in Cal Poly’s “Campus Crusade for Chris”. Who was this Chris and why did he need your support?

Self-serve gas purchase pre-charge?

Well downvote me to shit then. We have our students fuel the airplanes from flight #1 (if it's needed; per our policy to leave the airplanes with no more than 2.0 tach hours since full fuel at return). CFIs are expected to teach students how to fuel (and add oil) and also where to purchase fuel to avoid paying over the odds.

100-Hour Prop Inspection

Posted by Little_Function3346@reddit | flying | View on Reddit | 10 comments

Possibly a specific AD driven inspection of the prop that recurs every 100hrs. Certain Hartzell hubs have an eddy current inspection that is required every 100 hours regardless of whether the aircraft otherwise requires a 100hr.

Non Compete clause?

Posted by Bigboyzackman@reddit | flying | View on Reddit | 68 comments

gregariouspilot@reddit

IANAL. Non-complete clauses are mostly unenforceable, and in some states are barred by statute. The worst that is likely to happen is you get fired by your employer. If you take something from your employer- like a client list- that is a separate issue which could be prosecuted criminally or civilly, whether or not you have signed a non-compete. $35 per hour is not enough to charge- you need to be at 2x that. Get yourself CFI insurance and have your student sign a liability waiver.

Just because it takes thousands of programming hours to ATTEMPT to simulate the decision making processes that the human brain develops during learning does not mean that the automation is better…it just means that it’s difficult to simulate the human brain and the hundred of thousands of years of evolution that have contributed to it’s abilities. The “random commercial pilot” you speak of relies both on their training plus their onboard hardware capabilities. I ride Waymo a lot and it’s good but there are a lot of moments of indecision that I don’t see with human drivers. The debate might be better moved forward with less hubris on both sides.

Quote from an eye witness: “I saw him flying just after sunset near the golden gate bridge. I saw a landing light coming towards me with smoke trailing behind it. I thought that the air show was over…. I looked through the telescope and saw it was a high wing airplane. “I didn’t know of any Cessnas with smoke systems” I said to my wife. “He’s going really fast!” She said, “Maybe it’s not a smoke system. Maybe he’s having an emergency “… Doh! I looked on Foreflight and watch him land at KOAK. He got real lucky to make it there.”

The aluminum head is assembled to the barrel using a combination of a threaded section and an interference fit band above the threads. Assembly is facilitated by heating one component and cooling the other. Once assembled they are not intended to be separated. In this case it appears the failure was within the steel barrel wall rather than at the steel/aluminum interface.

Having installed 6 Western Skyways rebuilds in the last decade, my observation is that aircraft flying around the SF Bay Area will show external corrosion on the cylinders within the first couple hundred hours after install. Fresh appearance in this case suggests to me that this engine doesn’t have many hours since reassembly…I have no information as to the history of the engine or components.
