If it's a dial or slider using a bimetallic strip you should be able to wedge the two pieces of metal together to complete the circuit...or separate them if they are already together when it's not running. If it's a digital control, then inside there will be a thermometer component and connecting or separating the wires will make it think it's very hot/cold. It may look like a diode or resistor.

It would have to exploit an existing bug in the camera app. Or the apps that are registered to receive the types of information that can be transmitted, but that requires the user to confirm as well. Very unlikely.

The problem is they have a peak draw that happens when the compressor turns on at the start of the cooling cycle so you could end up tripping a fuse. I have 2 in my place and the more powerful of the two causes the lights to dim for a moment whenever it turns on. If you just need to change a few words, you can open dev tools in your browser (Ctrl+shift+I or equivalent) and edit the HTML (in chrome the tab is called elements Ctrl+shift+c might take you straight there). Search for the text to change, double click the element and change away. Page will update once you stop editing that element and you can screen shot. Scammers use this a lot, and when they have access to "help" a victim...they can take a password input field that the victim just entered, change the type from password to text and whatever was typed in will show in clear text instead of asterisks...for example. LastPass and other password fill tools have this vulnerability due to how the browser fill works as well..so NEVER share passwords with those tools if you need to make sure the password isn't revealed to who you are sharing it with.

You might want to reconsider this approach...when you're caught in the lie the people who actually matter and might be able to help you won't be as likely to believe you when you need to give them the exact truth and you'll have to start fighting the "both sides lied" type battle which people like your parents are masterful at playing.
