ULPT: When people write their venmo/cashapp on car windows, request money
Posted by sideshowbvo@reddit | UnethicalLifeProTips | View on Reddit | 228 comments
You know the people I'm talking about. "Girls Trip! Venmo @basichoes so we can have a great trip!" The ones like that. So yeah, take their information and request money from them. 20, 100 bucks, whatever( for best results, I recommend a realistic number) Some people are dumb enough to just see money and approve. Worst case scenario, they decline, so request again. Even if you don't get money, annoying these people enough to stop is reward enough.
A_MESS_OF_A_CAT@reddit
I want to do this for my dogs bday coming up but would this put me at risk for this? I just want to give my dog a special day and give people a chance to join in.
sideshowbvo@reddit (OP)
I mean, I like animals more than people, so it's more acceptable? I still wouldn't do it, but that's me
A_MESS_OF_A_CAT@reddit
Yeah I posted on a cashapp subreddit asking for advice if it would be safe and now I’m basically being told that I’m a horrible person for wanting to do this. One of the people that check me out at the self serve bath place all the time gave me the idea. Kinda wish I never asked.
sideshowbvo@reddit (OP)
Hey, if you wanna do it, do it, fuck em. Who cares what people think, people are idiots
A_MESS_OF_A_CAT@reddit
I’m thinking I might not. If this is how online people react how are people going to react? I was already on the fence about it and it might just be a bad idea.
sideshowbvo@reddit (OP)
That's the thing, people online are assholes. Do it for 2 days, then wipe it off. A lot of people who aren't terminally online will probably think it's cute. It's obviously not something you see around you all the time, that's my issue. I see a lot of them and I don't give a fuck about Madisyn's 22nd
A_MESS_OF_A_CAT@reddit
Yeah I thankfully live in an area that isn’t commonly seen. This made me feel a little bit better. I might try it and see but I’ll still be on high alert. Thank you.
Salt2273@reddit
On a recent vacation in Charlotte SC. I saw a honda TEST DRIVE licence plate on a car. From Carervilles Georgia honda dealership. On the back window written in
Pink "Buy her a drink!
White: "Tiffanys Bach 24
green: CASH APP
Had not idea what it meant. But it looks like they got a FREE test drive car then drove it 6 hours (350 miles) from Georgeo to Island of the Palms beach with that big Ad on the back window.
So do people then see that and look up cash app for a name Tiffanys Back24 ?
Wonder what they made as they did have to buy some gas. Grifters will do anything for a buck
Maingunda@reddit
Buying cashapp accounts at good rate
Crustypoos@reddit
How much
ginganinja09@reddit
Even better- save the username and request at like 2am on Saturday night when they are all already drunk and more likely to not be thinking clearly.
DarkBlackCoffee@reddit
Someone I know almost fell for pretty much this exact scenario. Hit people at the right time and keep the number reasonable, and it will work more often than people realize.
bigdave41@reddit
Won't they be able to contact customer service and reverse the payment though?
Lanky_Possession_244@reddit
If they realize what happened. If they're drunk and out of town, they may never realize it. You'd be surprised how many people have charges they don't know about. I know someone who had over 100 bucks a month going to subscriptions he didn't know he was paying for for three years.
luxxlemonz@reddit
Lowkey thought this was about to be an ad 🤓😮💨
Crackytacks@reddit
That person is a companies wet dream. Unrelated, can you send them my info? I have a monthly subscription they may enjoy for five days and then forget about for two years. You also have to call to cancel, and it's really hard to get a real person.
TigerPixi@reddit
Nah, certified mail to cancel, like a damn gym membership.
SubstantialBass9524@reddit
Some gyms require you to visit the original location in person and can’t cancel via phone or another location. That’s really fun
Peterthinking@reddit
Phone companies. They rent you a $25 phone for $5 a month for 30 years. Nobody even blinks. I always returned the phone and bought one. Whenever I see someone has a landline I ask them to look at their bill.
bigdave41@reddit
I guess so - seems like the kind of thing you could get away with for years, until you have a long history of what effectively is financial fraud and someone decides to look into it.

thefinpope@reddit
Is it actually financial fraud? It's just asking someone for money and them giving it to you.
p44v9n@reddit
Yes lol
Fraud = deception intended to result in financial or personal gain
freemason777@reddit
its only deception if youre literally illiterate though. 'I wasnt paying attention' and 'I regret it tho' are not valid legal defenses
bigdave41@reddit
It's still deception if you don't fall for it. I get what a lot of you are saying, sure, and you could try to explain it a load of different ways, but you're literally trying to trick someone into giving you money. You're sending a message to someone you don't know, hoping they think it's one of their friends or family and pay it without thinking or because they're drunk. If they're not deceived and they realise you're someone they don't know, they don't pay it.
People do a similar thing of sending random invoices to company billing departments and seeing if their accounting staff are incompetent enough to pay them without checking. It will be seen as fraud by any court, the only uncertainty is whether or not they can prove your intent, which I admit is difficult. That's why I said you might get away with a few, but if you have a pattern of doing this with dozens or hundreds of people, it's not difficult to see what you're doing.
Creative-Disk563@reddit
Yes, but saying "you owe me money" is a lie. So that's deception. Saying, "can I please have some money?" is not a lie. It's a request they can either accept or deny.
bigdave41@reddit
It's not the request itself that's a lie, it's the fact that people know the app interface is potentially misleading and people can mistake "can I have some money?" for "here's some money!".
The actual stated reason for doing it in this post, is that you think they'll accidentally approve it or they'll be too drunk to know the difference. The only way you get money is if someone makes a mistake, a mistake that you know they're likely to make, you're setting them up to make, and you benefit financially from them making.
Creative-Disk563@reddit
Welcome to sales!
bigdave41@reddit
Lol...good joke but not even remotely the same thing. Salespeople might inflate how good their product is or overcharge someone, but the customer is clear that they're buying something. If the customer is not clear that they're buying something, that's akin to the tourist scams where they shove something into your hand and then ask for money for it. Again a classic con trick and a deliberate misleading of someone else for profit.
freemason777@reddit
sure, but it would be totally justified if all the company vehicles had the billing department's venmo account on their windshields as they'd literally be advertising it
bigdave41@reddit
In what way would it be justified? If someone has their credit card number tattooed on their forehead is it justified to steal from them? It would certainly be very foolish to open yourself up to fraud, that doesn't mean the person committing it has any kind of legal or moral justification.
How far do you take that? If someone's front door is unlocked is it justified to walk in and take their TV?
Creative-Disk563@reddit
No. If you use someone's credit card without authorization, that's fraud. Just because you know their credit card number, or because they left their physical card somewhere you were able to take it, doesn't change the fact that it's not your card, you know it's not your card, you don't have permission to use it and you're using it anyway. When you use someone else's credit card, you are pretending to be them. You are deceiving the store where you spent, the owner of the card, and the financial institution. That is in no way comparable to asking someone for money.
bigdave41@reddit
I've had so many people say this same thing to me now, it's not as simple as saying "hey can I have $100?" and you know it's not, because if it was it would almost never work.
If you want a real life equivalent I guess it's similar to running up to someone in the street and saying "Hey! $100?" and they say "yeah sure, I'd like $100" and you then take $100 out of their pocket. Asking if you can use their card to buy a new TV is not the same because it's clear to them what you're asking and they can decide while in possession of all the relevant information.
The way the app interface currently works makes it misleading in this way because it's not immediately clear at a glance whether the money is being given or taken. It's blowing my mind how many people seem to think this is something they can do and be completely ok legally.
freemason777@reddit
go the other direction. how open to it and complicit would someone have to be in giving their money away before asking for their money isnt fraud in your eyes?
Lukewill@reddit
Deception = the action of deceiving someone
There is no deception involved. It's literally a clearly worded request for money that appears on the screen and then you select approve or deny.
It's the same exact thing with contract law. If you sign the damn contract without even reading it, then that is 100% your legal responsibility.
NurseKaila@reddit
That’s not true; Contracts are often found to be invalid when signed under duress or when they include illegal terms.
https://www.consumerfinance.gov/about-us/newsroom/cfpb-warns-against-deception-in-contract-fine-print/
https://www.nbcnews.com/business/consumer/annoying-fine-print-may-not-even-be-legal-flna1c7700505
https://review.law.stanford.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2020/03/Furth-Matzkin-Sommers-72-Stan.-L.-Rev.-503.pdf
Lukewill@reddit
Yes, neither of which apply in this situation.
NurseKaila@reddit
I didn’t say that did apply in this situation. I was correcting your elaboration that all contracts are “100% your legal responsibility” when that’s clearly not true.
Lukewill@reddit
Sorry, I thought it was understood that I was referring to a perfectly legal and binding contract. Completely beside the point, though.
My point was that if you choose not to read it and sign it anyway, you are still bound by the terms within. Which was just an analogy for the original topic, which was Venmo.
I'll try to be more specific with my analogies in the future and you can try to be less pedantic.
NurseKaila@reddit
Your point is still incorrect.
Lanky_Possession_244@reddit
No, it's not. You're requesting money and getting it. Then not paying attention and being an idiot doesn't constitution fraud and even if someone did take that case, it would never win in court.
schellenbergenator@reddit
Is it fraud tho if you just ask for money and they give it to you?
bigdave41@reddit
Well, you knew you had no legitimate reason to ask for it, and that they wouldn't have sent it if they hadn't mistaken your request for money being sent to them. Whether or not that can be proven is what's gonna be decided in court I guess.
freemason777@reddit
if there was a law saying you needed to deserve the things you ask for we would have free college, free doctors, concert and sports tickets would top out at ten bucks, and water would be free everywhere. toll roads wouldnt exist
bigdave41@reddit
Nothing to do with deserving, you're requesting money because you hope someone might fall for your trick - not that it's not a cool trick, but it is gonna be seen as fraud.
Leading-Force-2740@reddit
this is not the definition of fraud.
bigdave41@reddit
Dictionary definition I can find is "wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain". By sending a request to someone you don't know, you intend to gain financially, and I believe it counts as wrongful deception because you're hoping they either mistake the request for a received payment, or they mistake your request for a legitimate request from someone they know.
In this scenario you have no legitimate reason to request money from them, the only way you receive the money is if they make a mistake. As I've said to many other commenters, it might be difficult to prove your intent in court, but don't act like that isn't the intent in this situation.
Lanky_Possession_244@reddit
Proving that with little enough doubt would be pretty difficult unless you made a post about it and even then, with there being two buttons to press to send money via a request, it being unintentional is not a great defense. No court is charging you with fraud over that. They may attempt to get you to take a plea deal if they are bored, but the paperwork wouldn't be worth the time. Any decent lawyer would be able to get you off pretty easily, if they even pressed charges, which they probably wouldn't.
bigdave41@reddit
For a single instance, sure. I was saying if you do this for years and you have a pattern of receiving random payments from people who then complain about it, what is your defence gonna be exactly?
Lanky_Possession_244@reddit
I didn't force them to send me money. I sent a request and they obliged. Even if I said I was fishing, nothing is illegal about requesting money for doing nothing. When you promise something in return, but don't deliver, that's when it would be fraud.
bigdave41@reddit
Like I said, on a one-off you might get away with that excuse, but be honest with yourself that it's an excuse surely? This is not the same as a beggar asking you for money in the street - in that situation you know exactly who they are and what they're asking for, and you could make the decision with all the information.
You know that person wouldn't pay you if they knew you're a random person requesting money - you're hoping they think you're a friend requesting money legitimately, or you're hoping they think they're getting money when actually they're sending it. If it's the latter then they're not entirely blameless themselves, but then all the best cons have an element of that.
PremiumUsername69420@reddit
Could I please have some of your money?
schellenbergenator@reddit
I see what you're saying. I think if the court can show your intention was to trick them into giving you money then that may constitute fraud. They'd have to show intent first tho which may be hard to do. Maybe you accidentally messed up and you wanted to send them money but hit request money by accident.
Sirdroftardis8@reddit
Me too, but then I downloaded MissileCash and found out how much money I was spending on subscriptions, like my ten MySpace accounts I was still paying for
Plumb_n_Plumber@reddit
Omitting /s Much? /s
Sirdroftardis8@reddit
No, this is an ad read for my new app that's definitely not a ripoff of rocket money. Please give me your money
tcrudisi@reddit
That app sounds awesome. Can I subscribe to it?
Sirdroftardis8@reddit
Yes, it's only one easy payment of all your money
WaferOk6759@reddit
Also curious : Won’t they notice the recipient’s username/phone number when they become sober and then try calling/reporting them to Venmo/Zelle for fraud?
ipeezie@reddit
what fraud?
M1STER_GR1M@reddit
Payment can ONLY be reversed or canceled by the recipient, not by the sender.
I know from personal experience, but fortunately not from being scammed lol
bigdave41@reddit
Presumably if a complaint is made and law enforcement are involved there's a way of at least tracking it if not reversing it
M1STER_GR1M@reddit
Possibly, but I'm not sure how well that would work considering it's in their company policy. That's why they have you verify and double-check the info before confirming the transfer. It's not their fault if someone chooses not to check the information before blindly accepting a transfer no matter if it's sending or retrieving a transfer.
It's like if someone on the street asked you for money, you gave it to them, and then you tried to call the police to have them give it back. The odds are most likely not in your favor in that case.
_not2na@reddit
Probably not, you have very little protections on Venmo/Cashapp/Zelle
yzlautum@reddit
I couldn’t get back about $4,000 I had sent in total to an old friend to help her with bills and she was going to pay me back. Took advantage of me when I was in a mental low point and knew I was drinking again and I’m a very empathetic person and it was just bad. Venmo did NOTHING to reverse the transactions. I did it 3 times within 2 weeks and would wake up freaking out. Fuck Venmo.
Lukewill@reddit
I believe big companies should take moral responsibility for what they do, but I'll be real with you. That is not Venmo's responsibility. Venmo didn't know you were drinking. You did and your friend did and Venmo had no part in the agreement, they just handled the money.
Your shitty friend asked for money and you said yes. Venmo was just the delivery method.
tacotacotacorock@reddit
They do that then anyone and everyone could reverse charges and that would cause chaos and distrust in their product. Unless you can prove fraud no financial institution is going to do much for you unless it's in their service guarantee, which most would never do.
yzlautum@reddit
For sure. She is an oxy addict.
GeorgeSantosBurner@reddit
Not very empathetic of you.
bigdave41@reddit
That's nothing to do with them though - if you didn't send the initial transaction in error, and contact them immediately afterwards. Sounds like what you needed was small claims court.
sm012@reddit
That sure sounds like a YOU problem... 3 times and it's Venmo's fault???
BanjosAndBoredom@reddit
If you'd mailed her a check, would you want USPS to repay the money because they delivered it?
SuperFLEB@reddit
Why should they? Their job is to send money to the people you ask them to send money to. You asked them. They sent it. Their job is done and done without error. That's like getting mad that the post office won't hunt down and take back a check you mailed to someone after you regretted sending it. You need to get that money back from the friend, not the courier.
yzlautum@reddit
I simplified a complicated situation into 1 small paragraph.
tacotacotacorock@reddit
Blaming others for your actions is never a good move for your character. Own up to your actions and learn from them.

Non-unionQuestion@reddit

oldirtydrunkard@reddit
oldmanyellsatclouds.gif
lord_flamebottom@reddit
Usually not. When it comes to "friends and family" money transfer services like Venmo, customer service tends to lean towards "if you weren't hacked, it's not our problem".
Shora-Sam@reddit
Cash app and venmo are used for scams because there's almost no way to get a refund for "friends and family" transactions.
Unless you specifically do a sale (and pay whatever fees / taxes on it) you have no "protection". Contacting support would get you nowhere.
noob_angler@reddit
From years of scamming, only one person has been able to reverse a charge.

unreeelme@reddit
Communism as a totalitarian dictatorship is bad, however there are still things to learn from reading about the ideals behind communism as a theory…
beige-dumps@reddit
sure!
strong social services are a hallmark of a healthy, developed nation.
Which, while imperfect, capitalism provides countless more of.
what else is communism good for?
unreeelme@reddit
Social services, and workers rights are pretty important parts of modern first world nations.
Without economic intervention, capitalism fails. Pure capitalism doesn’t exist in the same way that pure communism never existed. They are based on ideals and theories that cannot be implemented at scale in a democratic society.
Personally social democracy is way more practical than either communism or capitalism
beige-dumps@reddit
then don’t tout communism like it’s the be-all-end-all solution.
“..democracy is way more practical than…communism”
say it louder
unreeelme@reddit
Capitalism isn’t inherently democratic either just like socialism isn’t.
I think you are confused, I never said anything about communism being any kind of solution but that it has ideals and history worth understanding.
It seems like you just want someone to yell at.

I like leaving my cashapp in random places cause it makes me giggle and I like to see who is gonna request some shit, or, very rarely, send me some shit.
That said, $lmaogtfo
1brusslesprout2go@reddit
Living in vegas i see this way to much. Im def going to be trying it out now next time i see a car with that on the window.
sideshowbvo@reddit (OP)
Hell yeah!
Broad-Ad-8005@reddit
Here is the one for yall to request on Venmo- @Taylor-Chamber
evdjj3j@reddit
I don't consider this unethical. They gave you their info.
PestCemetary@reddit
I always wondered if this ever works
airbrat@reddit
If you dress it up as a female (draw lil hearts, flowers, etc..) you'd be surprised how easy this works
awmaleg@reddit
All it takes is one wrong click!
Joesome5@reddit
Instructions unclear, sent SBF 10 bitcoin.
andreyred@reddit
I just tried it with my wife and it actually takes 2 clicks to send someone money from a request.
Appropriate-Economy5@reddit
Saw this exact thing but it was for the kid’s HS graduation. Mother had on her back windshield, “Congrats to my son, Class of 2024,” and then her Venmo. 🤢
Drunkenaviator@reddit
This also works great on those marketplace "just send a deposit" scammers.
jmims98@reddit
The real ULPT is to do the opposite. Pretend you’re just engaged, at a bachelor party or something, and get paid to go out for drinks.
sideshowbvo@reddit (OP)
I would become the thing I swore to destroy!
freemason777@reddit
poison the well in both directions lol
Dragonr0se@reddit
If you can't beat them, join them 🤷♀️
AcceptableOwl9@reddit
Where do you advertise to though? Social media?
Imhereforboops@reddit
You advertise literally how this post is talking about
AcceptableOwl9@reddit
I’ve never seen that before in my life, and I seriously doubt you’d get more than one or two people per week contributing. Even then I doubt it would be for more than $5-10.
Nickbronline@reddit
Better than the $0 a week you’re getting from crying on reddit
sideshowbvo@reddit (OP)
It's extremely common around me. And it must work, because I keep seeing it. I live in a college town, so I see "buy me a drink, it's my 21st! Venmo @richbeggar!" That one's extra stupid, because you can just get free drinks at bars on your birthday here
OHPAORGASMR@reddit
Beer money
rockthe40__oz@reddit
Better than nothing
Limeila@reddit
And double-check the venmo notifications
richbeezy@reddit
You see signs for this on ESPN's College Game Day, make a point to try it during the upcoming College football season.
Probably best to wait an hour after seeing the sign to ensure they are extra drunk.
sideshowbvo@reddit (OP)
Ha, I'm in a town that ESPN College Game Day frequents
NotThatSpecialToo@reddit
This is not a prolifetip at all its a griefer tip.
Why not just ignore it move TF on?
Anyone that takes their own personal time to do this is petty AF and accomplishing literally nothing but inconveniencing yourself and someone else.
trash humans :/
Goats_for_president@reddit
I do this it. It hasn’t worked yet
sideshowbvo@reddit (OP)
Yeah same. I take solace in annoying them. If we all do it, maybe they'll stop
movingmouth@reddit
What skin is it off your nose? Easy enough to ignore, just like panhandlers.
sideshowbvo@reddit (OP)
The possibility of free money is cool too
Puceeffoc@reddit
Literally doing what they're doing but reverse... If they're fine advertising then I'm fine asking! Whatever happened to not being the center of attention?
sideshowbvo@reddit (OP)
And I have more respect for panhandlers, at least they look the part. They're driving a 2023 Honda Pilot, they're doing better than me
awmaleg@reddit
And basic hoes too would be a bonus
modestmidwest@reddit
This guy ULs
IAM100PERCENTNOTACAT@reddit
What's a basi choe?
Original-Pomelo6241@reddit
I always send them a request for money. 😂
watmattersmost@reddit
lol no one's dumb enough to just approve btw. If you are you probably don't have the money anyway and if your aren't you'll catch it
waterborn234@reddit
I've never seem the Venmo thing. Maybe it's less common in Canada.
makeanewblueprint@reddit
We don’t have Venmo here. I guess they could eTransfer us a bachelorette drink.
Obvious_Exercise_910@reddit
My bank only allows me to etransfer money.
makeanewblueprint@reddit
Take my upvote (by eTransfer)
SosaParks2003@reddit
Best to do this thing later into the night especially if they’re drinking, kudos if you’re good looking in you’re profile picture too 🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️ way more likely to just approve
NicholasLit@reddit
You are profile picture
Nichole-Michelle@reddit
I mean honestly, at this point, just lie and say you have cancer and need treatment. Drive around with that on your car and your venmo shit. Profit!
Puceeffoc@reddit
Make your venmo "basichoe" or one letter off so people mistakenly donate to your cause.
Reach-for-the-sky_15@reddit
Even better, do the opposite and take advantage of people’s generosity.
Say that you/your kid/friend/etc. just turned 21 and is going out with friends for their first drinks.
f8tel@reddit
...or do as they do? Probably have better results. It's modern day panhandling/begging.
Hot-Win2571@reddit
Well, it will be the first time I've been a bachelorette. Maybe I should shave first.
mysteryteam@reddit
Never a bachelorette, always a bride.
andreyred@reddit
The person has to click “pay” and then “send” on a second screen, so this is pretty unlikely to work.
sideshowbvo@reddit (OP)
More likely than ME sending THEM money :)
