Western Express just assigned me a load that has “chargeback”. If it’s late, they charge the driver (me) $200. Is there any truth to this???

I feel the same, I agree basic communication skills are absolutely necessary for safety. I just hate the WHY this was done, and it’s not for safety.

Probably one of the ugliest semis ever built hands down.

Drove one for a few months. Hated it. Constant wind noise from the doors. Upper half of the door were as strong as wet cardboard, you could push it and see light from between the cab and door seal.

This is why I will never pull reefers

I’ve seen 3 trucks burn down over the years and zero reefers. While it’s definitely possible, I don’t think it’s very common at all.

Is Double Clutching a real thing?

Posted by commandough@reddit | Truckers | View on Reddit | 168 comments

ecstadtic@reddit

Asked the question to a real tech at Eaton, wether double clutching was really necessary or not. Basically, his answer was: No, you don’t need it, but strongly recommended pressing the clutch once in the higher gears, to release torque stress that may still be in the clutch springs/plates. Floating or not, if you do it well, a good transmission will last basically forever. Those who destroy transmissions floating will destroy transmissions double-clutching.

Don’t know if im just dumb and ignorant, but never have I felt unsafe in my cab. I did plenty of time worry about my load or equipment being tampered with, but not unsafe.

Pneumatic Bulk trailer (sugar)

Posted by TDOTBRO@reddit | Truckers | View on Reddit | 31 comments

ecstadtic@reddit

Unsure what sugar temps are, but a few years back I was hauling plastics resin pellets. We couldn’t push air and volume as this would heat the pipes too much, and it would create a film that would eventually clog up filters and pipes. In your case, that could be yummy caramel !

I got fired today.

Getting out to make sure you don’t hit anything isn’t idiotic under pretty much any circumstances. If you don’t, and hit something, that’s when you look stupid. From what I can tell, you dodged a bullet, looks like a shit company to work for.

They’ve been doing dumb shits for years, people still want to shovel money their way. As long as people keep paying, they’ll do whatever it is they’re doing.

So I failed a hair test at Werner Enterprises for my first ever trucking job because I stupidly let them take from my year old beard and something from 11 months ago showed up. How fucked am I?

Canadian here. I’ve always had drug tests pre-hiring for cross-border jobs. Then you are in a pool for random tests. They’ve always been piss tests only though. Never ever had tests for jobs where I remained north of the border.

Any of yall hauled Peroxide? I was volunteered into it

50% is what I hauled the most. Freezing point at roughly -50C -60F. 70% is a little higher around -40C -40F Much better than Caustic Soda which freezes at 50F lol

I did for some years. Shipper owned their own trailers, most of them were older than I were and still operated/looked new. In harsh Canadian winters, 2” braided hoses are nice to work with compared to rubber hoses. Also H2o2 doesn’t really freeze at normal temps.

Burnt out software engineer considering trucking, am I insane?

I went from trucker to network engineer/sysadmin. I often think about going back to trucking, until I realize I remember the nice 20% part of trucking but conveniently forget the 80% pure BS that trucking has become. Better hours, stability, same pay with 50% less hours.

I don’t know how these guys do it

I did it as my first job. Picking up sorted, organic waste from a Toronto sorting center (you know, food, diapers, etc) left a few days in the scorching heat in a black bin, then left a few days in a sorted center) to deliver to a business who made conpost with it. Smell gets into everything, equipement, clothes, everything. Did it until I could get something better.

Would you let this get you fired?

Drove for a grocery chain for abt 2 years. It happens, more than you’d think. Keep in mind that half of the pallets in your truck hold together with hopes and dreams. Drive carefully but accept the fact that this will happen no matter what. You driving style will simply change how often this happens

Thanks Werner

I used to drive for a company. We'd load produce from Cali or Arizona and bring them back in Canada through Windsor. We needed to take temps from the product about twice daily, so loads had no seals. So loads without seals were common at the border. Once, a team took a load, broke the seal and threw some coke into their trailer. Then put their broken seal on the door. Their went through customs, got cleared but when the rear of the trailer went past the booth, the customs agent noticed the broken seal, had them stopped and the trailer searched. They ended getting a free, all expenses paid stay in jail.

Had a stupid automated transmission who couldn't keep up in steep grades and heavy loads. Stalled in the middle of a steep one on snow @ 140,000 lbs. Couldn't get traction and had to back up down the hill on a single lane road. Cops showed up 2 minutes later and blocked the road so that I could safely back down my b-train
