This is what made me quit werner. You can't sleep well when you need to wake up every 30 minutes and sit there nursing the engine for 10 minutes to stay warm. Fuck companies that treat drivers like this
View on Reddit #45181593

ragenuggeto7@reddit

Do you guys not have night heaters in the us ? My cab is like an oven through the winter via the mercs factory night heater.
View on Reddit #45311439

StonedTrucker@reddit

We can have anything and everything you can, the problem is mega companies won't pay for it. It's cheaper for them to buy a basic truck with no amenities and put a new driver in it every 3 months when the last one quits
View on Reddit #45364347

ragenuggeto7@reddit

Seems very short sighted, no way is it cheaper to pay to run the engine at idle for heating purposes vs having a night heater that barely consumes any fuel. And then there's all the extra wear on the engine from it idling.
View on Reddit #45375306

StonedTrucker@reddit

It certainly is short sighted but our economy is set up to run quarterly. Nobody cares how screwed up the engine will be 2 years from now because it will be someone else's problem. If I bought a truck I'd definitely equipnit to last but big companies don't care
View on Reddit #45393742

Swifty-1985@reddit

Do your trucks not have generators? They use a fraction of what a 15L engine uses and power your ac/heater... Also great for recharging your batteries if you forget to switch the isolator while away from truck.
View on Reddit #45279983

StonedTrucker@reddit

Some do but mega carriers won't buy them. We're not supposed to idle our engines but we do it anyway. A lot of APUs are crap here as well. The one on my last truck broke down almost every month and my current one doesn't run either
View on Reddit #45364589

It's a shame, they know drivers will 'break the rules' to be comfortable as comfort reduces fatigue... Lack of forward thinking is not a unique trait in this industry unfortunately

Inverter + space heater. Idk why the battery keeps dieing, boss!
View on Reddit #45226145

DaSaw@reddit

I actually tried this when my bunk heater was broken. But even with the engine running, it didn't produce enough current to run it. Without the engine running it wouldn't operate at all. My hope was to heat the cab up faster, heating from the moment I started the engine instead of having to wait for the engine to heat up. It was okay, though. I put together a truly massive pile of blankets and got through it, and had the bunk heater fixed a few days later.

It drove me nuts at Crete too. Companies bitch and moan about driver safety and driver comfort, but sure as shit ain’t willing to pay a dime for it.  When opti idle leads to driver’s death, the class action lawsuit will be biblical. Can’t wait for the check of $3.67 for my pain and suffering in 15 years
View on Reddit #45188640

datdudeuheardof@reddit

I drove for Crete for a year with opti idle and it was miserable at times during summer months and winter. One of their trucks almost killed me and my dog from an exhaust leak that was leaking into the cab in Wyoming when it was like 10 degrees, an APU with working heat would have been nice while I waited for an hour to be towed like 80 miles. I don't think I would ever work for a company without an APU, it's super critical. That's when I quit not long after. They are still the best mega carrier company to drive for imo. Wish I had stayed there.
View on Reddit #45259157

Tht24v2ndgen@reddit

Honestly with these new trucks you almost have to keep a carbon monoxide alarm in the truck because of that pesky emissions system.
View on Reddit #45288600

Independent-Fun8926@reddit

Damn that's scary. Exhaust leaks are one of my big fears. Glad you and your dog are good, driver. I really wanted Crete to work out for me. I had planned to stay there for a few years, get out of debt and save up cash. But every step of the way it felt like they didn't give a shit about me. Just another truck number. They left me waiting between loads a lot, that was my biggest bitch. Rarely preplanned. Sometimes 15 hours, sometimes a day. I sat in Houston for nearly two days waiting for a load. Even when I made sure about my calls and knew they knew I was ready to go again. Of course, then they'd send me to a Walmart DC to "help out." North Platte had me sitting as much as national dryvan. At least Cheyenne got me moving; I liked driving for them so much I stayed on their account for a month. The micromanaging got really frustrating. That my truck wasn't detailed and I had to do it myself when I got was annoying. That the truck wasn't even PM'd, it even had obvious OOS violations and other shit wrong with it - that all together took two days out of orientation to fix. That should've been a sign to go home honestly. More than half my orientation class had issues with their assigned trucks. Crete's a big company so no doubt a driver can find a good niche with a good AM and home terminal, and maybe they can easily tolerate the other bullshit, but man I couldn't stand it anymore and bailed. Couldn't do another mile for them. Really pissed me off when they didn't reimburse me $200 and charged me $300 for detailing their truck. I detailed it before I returned it lol. Maybe it's biting me in the ass now; it's been months since I got an offer lined up. But whatever. I'm fortunate that I can leave a bad job when I think it's time. Sorry for the long reply. I guess I'm still butthurt lmao
View on Reddit #45263714

datdudeuheardof@reddit

Yep very scary, i only noticed it because i got lightheaded and started panicking. Sounds like they did you dirty. My AM was actually very good, never micromanaged me and kept me rolling, though i only chose to drive 400 miles per day and do recaps with the occasional 34. Definitely matters whose your AM. Their equipment maintenance could definitely be better that's for sure. I remember having to help out at the Cheyenne walmart, that's what i hated most. They had me running out my 11 hr clock everyday and kept calling me. One of their reefer trailers broke down on me while i was sleeping. You can make a ton of money doing that though with how consistent Walmart freight is.

A few people who have frozen to death because at the idle didn’t work below 20° it happened in 23. I haven’t heard anything since then and I don’t know if it was Werner or Schneider or one of the other big carriers. What it has happened as a matter of fact when we got our 23 freightliners and they didn’t put the bar heater in the bunk it was OK during the summer but when winter hit and it got below 30° the owner made them take the OPTi idle off so that way I could idle the truck without freezing to death

There was a parts shortage for bunk heaters so companies were receiving truck orders and taking a credit for the bunk heaters not being delivered. However, they didn't make changes to the truck programming to accommodate for not having heaters.

I was at Crete Carrier from 2018-2022 and that was a big issue I had with them. At the time I was able to put a bottle on the right side of the fuel pedal to keep the truck running when I needed it to
View on Reddit #45252101

I was with them only three months last year. I never tried the bottle trick but I never found any trick to work on the '22 Cascadia I had. It'd even try to shut down sitting in traffic or at a red light. Opti-Idle would always bug out at least once or twice a week, and it wouldn't cycle the a/c at all until I hard-reset the electronics. Why not just pull the trailer brakes, throw a chock on the tractor if it makes you nervous and then let it idle in gear...
View on Reddit #45212491

StonedTrucker@reddit

I've tried this in several trucks and they all acted differently. One let me idle, one didn't care at all and shut right down, and a third one would let me idle 95% of the time but randomly choose a time to start the idle shut off. If you find the thermometer you can trick your truck into idling all you want
View on Reddit #45262486

some still shut off regardless. if your truck has an override engine button, you can buy a button clicker on Amazon and program it to click the button every 2 minutes. it's pathetic its come to this.
View on Reddit #45218148

LonleyWolf420@reddit

The override is meant for emergency shut down to get off the road if the engine has an issue.. using this can void the warranty.. I'm not siding with these POS companies I'm just stating something I read in the owners manual

View on Reddit #45213982

Ur_Fav_Step-Redditor@reddit

These companies suck for sure. But as a driver you should already have extra blankets in case of emergency. I suggest an actual cold weather sleeping bag. That’s what I got when I had a trainer, even though it was July. But I’ve been out in -15 and my bunk heater wouldn’t start bc snow pileup was blocking it and I’d get in that sleeping bag with a little fleece blanket too and literally had the best sleep of my life… until you wake up and have to crawl out of bed into a damn freezer. But if you’re stuck at that kind of company for now then get a good sleeping bag that’s rated for like -30°. They aren’t that much more than a normal sleeping bag at Walmart.

It's absolutely illegal for the truck to shut off while in gear... Brought this up with the Freightliner techs I work with, it's not a setting they just turn on it's a bypass they add that will avoid the warranty if the driver brings it up and it gets found. Not something the techs look for on their own.
View on Reddit #45255707

Technically the countdown kicks you into neutral out of drive. Even if you have the knob still on drive it’ll pop up as neutral on the dash when it turns off. To start the truck I have to switch the knob to neutral and turn the key even though it says N on the dash.

Yeah many times I’ve been in standstill traffic and looking around not paying attention to have my truck shut off on me. I have 5 minutes. If I don’t go 2mph the truck will shut off no matter what at the end of that count down. Reverse, drive, neutral, foot on the brake, trailer brake held down or any of the knobs pushed in I’ve tried it all. The only thing that stops the countdown is forward motion.

England is the same, won't idle between 17 and 72. But there's a bunk heaters that blasts hot enough to warm up a can of soup with and it'll still crank up when it wants to charge the batteries if you somehow manage to sit long enough for it to matter.
View on Reddit #45252470

musicalmadness1@reddit

I was on dedicated fleet. We cheated and maxed heat an hour before parking and then adjusted the sleeper fan separately. Kept the truck idling. Sucked for that fleet that england only decided in Dec 2023 to get all sleepers with apus. Like wtf.
View on Reddit #45266379

Eidolon82@reddit

I've been through half a dozen trucks, all had espar heaters. This is the first one that has opti idle enabled but I've never needed it just for heat, I just get the batteries tested as winter rolls in. The APUs were and are a lie. They're actually EPUs and there's tons of '24 and '25 trucks without them. They just can't understand than no one gets actual APUs to lose money while also wanting to be anal about idle times, but that seems to be every mega. Far as I know everything after '23 does have opti idle, and idk if they intended it but I have an air dump switch again. I haven't had that since some 53xxx POS and jesus it's been a life saver while filling in on a retail dedicated fleet with three daily drop hooks.
View on Reddit #45282039

musicalmadness1@reddit

I have a tripac apu. It will jump battery if it's dead but has enough charge. And my apu will start and shut down as needed. My company all trucks have air dump. But we only have like 300 trucks in the company. Including some manual ones. How is a apu a lie. And I was stopped working for England in Jan of 2023. I remember the December safety thing about they would be getting apus on all sleeper trucks. The apu doesn't burn as much fuel as idling truck engine. And as stated it can jump battery keep heater working or ac. I don't see a issue it also helps keep tanks from freezing and coolant from being ice cold when starting engine.
View on Reddit #45301153

Eidolon82@reddit

Because they never have and never will consider APUs. They were going to get EPUs and tell the drivers who don't know the difference that they were APUs. We still mostly have neither, but I haven't seen a '24 or '25 without optiidle so that's probably what they went with. https://meltontruck.com/blog/apus-epus/
View on Reddit #45308780

musicalmadness1@reddit

Yeah. My company went with actual apus. The tripac uses diesel fuel. Not a epu. I know what the epu is. I wouldn't want one rather have apu since it doesn't need more batteries. I don't know if england ever got there eapu or epu systems since I left them.

So I've seen from a friend doing this . I believe the trucks are programed (or used to be) to stay on if the temp is greater than 70 OR less than 25. So if it's below 25, the truck will stay on. For those pesky days that was only 26 and wouldn't go down.... managed to find the temp sensor, and a lighter was lit under it to bring the temp to 70. Once it hit 70, leave it alone. don't move the truck at all because it will reset. Able to idle through the night.

On a freightliner, if you look underneath the driver side mirror there's thins little thing sticking out. that's the sensor that read the temp. You can't cut it off with a knife but you'll have your check engine light on. I did this when I worked at swift when the damn truck wouldn't idle and I said fuck it and just cut it off.

For all the shit megas get this one is absolutely fucking justified, that is pathetic. The three mom and pop companies I've worked for in my career all of them had anti-idle methods on the truck like webasto heaters or little tripac generators, but none of them would stop you from just idling if you wanted to. None of the trucks had that bullshit shut off garbage. And if something broke they just had you idle until it was fixed and the one time both my anti idling AC and my truck's AC broke down at the same time they put me in a hotel so I could sleep. Other than the poor folks trying to get their experience so they can go to a real company, there is no excuse to be putting up with that kind of bullshit.

Espar diesel fired bunk heaters. $#! + melts plastic and everything else in front of the vent. Alot of manufactures are moving to epu's now to capitalize on the money. Normally another company makes the apu and installs it. Freightliner and International have their own epu. And like most new/new-ish stuff there's some kinks and issues needing to be worked out.

Put on socks, sweatpants, and sweatshirt or a hoodie and get you one of them weighted blankets, and another one to go over that and you’re fine. You’re nice and toasty but once it dips below 30 and you’ve got these new trucks with little or no insulation you could freeze very easily

Copy and pasted my old comment. I used to work for Werner. This is what I did My old freightliner would shut off because of opti idle between 32-68 degrees. I bought a small heater with a cigarette lighter power source from loves, and an extender for that plug and would tape it under the driver side mirror by the temp sensor. I would then tape an old BOL with it to make a little pocket of hot hair that would have the truck thinking its 108 degrees in January in Chicago. It was total redneck engineering but it worked all night
