Turkiye was on its way to become a member, with strong economy, rapid development... So sad to see Erdogan destroying everything, taking the country back to Ottoman times :(

"The fee is all inclusive no VAT" - is VAT included?

This is common in Italy, you say I don't speak Italian and they repeat the same thing slower and louder. But I think here they mean they are not VAT registered.

Do road surfacing contractors use different materials/mixes in the UK vs rest of Europe?

Posted by MrRedDoctor@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 361 comments

dkech@reddit

Italy is a bit too varied from North to South, so I can't tell, but I definitely agree with Belgium being worse! My main problem with UK roadworks is how long they take. Like, I swear, an M6 segment I was going to through took almost 10 years!

You are being unreasonable. Perhaps you don't understand that bank details are not the same as giving out your debit card details. If someone has your account number and sort code it's easy for them to send YOU money. If someone sets up a fraudulent direct debit using your details, you are covered by the direct debit guarantee, so it's not considered dangerous.

Do you say you live in Great Britain or the U.K. ?

Should I ask them for a non-mac laptop?

Posted by DiabloTy@reddit | linux | View on Reddit | 47 comments

dkech@reddit

Oh lord... We would allow senior Devs to select a Linux laptop instead of our standard Mac, as long as they had a long experience with the OS. It seems they were never experienced enough to fix all glitches, giving us interoperability issues, so we had to disallow the option to new hires and would consider someone not happy with that a problem employee. By that time, Apple had come out with Apple Silicon which made for spectacularly better hardware. Enough so that Linux users had to agree the switch was worth it. This as someone who once considered Linux as the best dev environment. It can still be for some, but Macs have come a long way and the hardware nowadays is really good.

Why do a lot of Brits call their country 'small'?

Posted by SerbianMonies@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 446 comments

dkech@reddit

It's very small for the population. I think it's the smallest for population 60+ million and second smallest among 50+ million countries. England in particular is quite small it's not a particularly long drive edge to edge and is home to most of the UK population. Scotland adds some size with very little population in the north.

Hmm, I guess it came out differently from how I meant it. Sorry. However, UK winters, yes, including Wales and Scotland are quite mild in comparison to most places in high latitudes. I am preparing for a trip to the Highlands next week and I am packing considerably "lighter" from my time in NY.

This is quite cute actually, thinking the English winter is harsh! :D. I spent a few years in NY and one of the reasons I am now in Manchester is how mild winters are in comparison. Having to dig your car out of ice at -25C was... an experience. And it gets much colder in other parts of the US. Unless the OP is actually from the South, they'll enjoy the temperatures.

Oh, Jesus, I had to look that up. I never knew that it was thought as "Kool" at the very beginning! But it seems quite quickly cringe-averse people made it simply K Desktop Environment (before that was also dropped in favour of just KDE over a decade ago...).

If I charge my phone in my car is it “free”?

Posted by S_mawds@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 280 comments

dkech@reddit

Yes, charging the phone uses more fuel. The alternator will resist spinning more when it is charging your car battery so your motor will use more fuel to maintain the same speed. The difference will obviously be too small to detect, but the fuel cost will likely be more than your electricity cost at home for the same charge.

"I use Linux and Windows at home". No idea what you were trying to do bringing in qemu "with a GPU passed through". It's like a kid trying to impress their gaming buddies, nothing to do with that interview. But don't worry every interview is experience, you simply get better after each one.

I was always sort of bemused by one particular git command that I did not actually use frequently, but it came up now and then. Part of my confusion was because I couldn't see how it would not be considered non-politically correct. At a time when "master" is being switch to "main", how can git mention flogging? Then I was listening to an unrelated talk and somebody mentioned you can use git's REFlog, and then it clicked! "reflog" is short for reference long, it is not a repeated flogging after all!

I am not British, I only live in the UK, but I can easily recognise keeping calm in adversity as a British characteristic. Sure not everyone is like that, but you sound needlessly pessimistic. The motto was WW2-era and the British public is famous for how they dealt with things like the Blitz or Dunkirk etc.

Without actually seeing your bug reports I can't possible comment. I've had mostly good experience personally - but not always of course. There are some projects that will ignore you even if you submit a pull request that multiple users verify it fixes their issue. That said, it is still probably better than closed source. I've had a serious issue with multi-monitor setup on OS X when one of the monitors was portrait mode, and despite several reports from multiple people, the bug survived 3 major OS versions (i.e. serveral years). I have multiple such examples with Apple (I use Macs for work), and I have to live with Apple not caring about such things. There are open source projects that are uncaring as Apple (and Apple is just used here as an example due to my exposure - I'd be writing about Microsoft or Oracle etc if I was working with them), although from the nature of open source, it is more likely the developers will actually want to help users.

Tea. Do you mean food, or actual tea? It's almost always the former (at least in the North), but I still feel I need to verify.

DKbench - Open source generic CPU benchmark

dkech@reddit (OP)

That's not a bad idea. The phoronix suite is a bit different, it doesn't do the single vs multi scaling, but you gain the comparison against the database of users, so it's less useful for what I needed the suite for, but would be more useful to others. The suite is open source and modular, if someone who's into adding benchmarks to the phoronix suite can ask me for assistance.

Yes I conceded the point about teaching good practices, so removed the -y (next release). Hopefully users will manage a y/n prompt! I had to Google that Linus thing! I had watched a couple of his videos when he became popular and seemed insufferable to me, and definitely on the wrong peak of the Dunning Kruger curve. So I've been avoiding anything related and was blissfully unaware of his Linux skills!

I thought about it. I wanted it to be as idiot proof as possible and I couldn't see anything that could go wrong with this particular set of packages. You do have a point about teaching poor habits though, so I can remove it from future instructions. So, is the \`-y\` the only thing that drew your attention? :)

What’s the most mildly infuriating thing you find about living in the UK?

Posted by JameSdEke@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 2005 comments

Oh, you have it easy! After finding the "country" in the drop-down menu, it's not always smooth sailing for me! You see, I am supposed to be in Greater Manchester (near Stockport), however, not all county drop-downs have it! Some have short versions and will have "Manchester" at least, but more commonly they will be going with the older counties and after I am sure there's nothing related to Manchester, I select "Cheshire" which was the old county.
